TRUTH ABOUT NAKAMICHI & ONKYO ANDROID HEAD UNITS

@ Dr MUDHAN
What's your opinion about the new car Android players from the famous Japanese brands like Nakamitchi and Onkyo?
Is it worth buying as it's sold as premium players?

I am not a fan of Android units (of course, at present! [:D])

Reasons:
PROS:
They are attractive, may give a premium look in the interiors, may provide 360 degree AHD camera views, inbuilt map navigation, voice activation, supports multiple Audio (Like WAV,FLAC) & Video formats. Suits to our budget from inexpensive to expensive ones.

CONS: All most all of them are having fake Display Pixel/Resolution, ROM/RAM configuration, Gimmicky buggy software, not a true DSP, unlicensed version of Android Auto /Apple Car Play, and most importantly they have only out dated –pirated, primitive version of Android OS.
Market is flooded with unknown names/brands of these units. Even the reputed names like BLAUPUNKT, WOODMAN, MOCO, UNPLUG are not committed to honor their features as claimed. 100% of these units are from Chinese manufactures of various reputation... some have got good technological facility and, some are of third grade assemblers. The long term reliability and aftermarket service are always in question.
We need to take risk on 'Buyer's Beware' concept [frustration]

It won’t be the choice of a true music lover.

Please read my detailed write up @
WHAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ANDROID CAR HEAD UNITS!

Coming to your question:

I become nostalgic to hear the names of NAKAMICHI and ONKYO as we owned some of their best pure audio deck and speakers.

Unfortunately, now they are no more [sad], became bankrupt or entered into brand alliance or sold their brand name rights to other manufactures.

Example, ONKYO become bankrupt during 2022, now under joint ownership by Sharp Corporation (owned by HiSENSE,CHINA) and Voxx International. Please note, Bankruptcy in Japan doesn't work the way it does in the West - it's pretty much a death sentence commercially in Japan. The brand will never be used again and the assets will be liquidated.)

The same way, NAKAMICHI is a subsidiary of Chinese holding company NIMBLE HOLDINGS (HQ @ HONG KONG) now. [cry]

Therefore, we need to understand that these are NOT those true NAKAMICHI /ONKYO products. You can’t find these products in their original website. God only knows who manufactures these products in CHINA.

ONKYO ANDROID.jpg

But, one of my reliable source / Seller confirms that these sets are better than the other popular brands in the market, and NAKAMICHI is little better than ONKYO. View the videos here:

NAKAMITCHI
ONKYO

Please note, try to have your personal audition -experience in case if you are interested.

IGNIS - YEARLY DETAILING PROCESS...

IGNIS.jpg

It's always amazing to work on certain car color paint surfaces. [:D]

I just did the yearly detailing process on my well-wisher’s car. It's a Uptown Red with Black roof.

Actually it's a 2018 model that I helped them to facelift last year (Check the links in the postscript).

Truly, if I am not wrong... this is the only IGNIS UR color in a facelift design at present in India.[glasses]

Maruti stopped this color in their facelift 2020 year models, and replaced with Lucent Orange color.

This is 5 + Years old car, periodically washed by hard water and the surface was little dull.

It's really stunning after the detailing process!

The process:
First Day
1. Washed the car with Car Shampoo (Sonax 314300 Concentrate Gloss Shampoo)
2. Clayed to prepare the surface carefully. (HSR Car Detailing Clay Bar)
3. Polished, using my old stock of AIO cleaner.( Poorboys White Diamond Glaze)
Second Day
4. Coated with LSP(Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax 845)
Third Day
5. Coated with old stock Wax (Formula 1 615026 Carnauba Paste Wax)

*Carefully prepared the surface during every step by cleaning the surface using Jopasu Duster and MF cloth, segment by segment.

IGNIS: MY NEW DASHBOARD FIGURINE!

CAR DASH IDOL.png

I am not religious but a spiritual oriented person. I respect every religion and human sentiments ..

Generally people in India keep the idol of their favorite deity on the car dashboard.

In other parts of the world, It's not uncommon to notice their favorite figurines on the car dashboard.

There's one figurine loved by many , around the world irrespective of the religion that they follow...

That’s The Ganesh idol!

People admire him for his great wit and unique appearance. It makes one happy by its structure, cheerful frame - radiating love and peace. He also looks endearingly cute, with a big pot belly and pretty little eyes.

He is believed to bring good luck and thus he is worshipped before anything new is started!

I was searching for such idol that really makes my day, every day whenever I drive my car.

Finally I got one. I am just sharing the information for those who love and interested.

Got it from Amazon.

PROS
1. It's really beautiful and made to perfection .
2. Idol is made of solid Poly Resin with gold / silver electro plating work, and terracotta color work. The Lenses eye work, which is a very difficult job to do in smalls idols, have been done by dedicated kaarigars who excel in detail aesthetics.
3. Multiple colors are available to our liking. LINK
4. It's returnable if not to our expectations or found damaged.

CONS
1. The 3.5 x 2 inches size may be little bigger on dashboard of small cars
2 . It's better to avoid cluttering car dashboard and should never be kept on Air Bag spots.
3. May reflect on your DASHCAM videos ( Read Here: How to avoid)
4. Expensive

IGNIS OE ALLOY WHEEL MODIFICATIONS:

I am interested to do the wheel spoke stickers as you did for your IGNIS. What’s your experience so far?
IGNIS.jpg

I always love see the beauty of the spinning wheels when a car is moving which I felt missing in my IGNIS OE Alloys.

Honestly, I don’t like the total black wheels in a car. It gets easily dirtier in our environment / roads, and spoils the overall look of the car despite how neatly its maintained.[frustration]

Unfortunately, the OE in Alfa & Zeta version of INDIA IGNIS gets total black wheels, leaving no other alternatives except to replace with Aftermarket Alloys of our choice.

After seeing this video below, I felt stickering is the easiest way to get satisfied without spending much on the aftermarket alloy wheels. So I did it to two of our cars, on Glistening Grey & Uptown Red.

Now, its more than two years, so far it goes well...

*The reason might be due to proper design of the stickers over spokes, proper use of heat gun and most importantly, I sprayed a clear coat over it to avoid peeling due to pressures.

Later, I saw another video as referred below, made me to understand that there is another way to make fully painted OE Alloy wheels to resemble like a ‘Diamond Cut’ design. But, it needs removal of each wheel, proper professional sanding to remove those part of paint.

I even thought of using a paint remover, but were afraid of their caustic risk property over skin and metals.

Left as it is, as the Stickers/Decals not created any issues so far.

Dear Dr MUDHAN, I have a peculiar issue with my IGNIS Dashboard light.
I noticed, the engine warning light appeared while driving and I brought back the car home, contacted the Maruti service person. He told me to check the petrol tank lid, I opened and secured the lid, then the EW Light disappeared.
My happiness has lost, as EWL appeared again after sometime & disappeared later. I told them during last service, they did check the ECU and told no errors found.
But, the issue repeats rarely sometime and disappears itself later.
I do not know, what to do. I would be thankful if you could suggest something in this regard.

IGNIS: ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ISSUES

The Check Engine Light (Malfunction Indicator Light) usually means that our car is experiencing a problem that could be ranging from a simple loose gas cap to a serious bad catalytic converter.

We can judge how serious an issue is by looking at the warning light:
Solid YELLOW / AMBER Light: Indicates a less urgent issue
Flashing YELLOW Light or RED: Indicates a severe problem that needs immediate attention

REASONS
  • Engine Problems (Ex. Extremely low oil pressure, Engine strain due to high speeds for too long or heavy loads, Engine Misfire)
  • Transmission Problems (Ex. Slipping Transmission)
  • Faulty Emissions Equipment (Ex. loose gas cap allowing fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank, Issues with Exhaust gas recirculation system / Catalytic Converter.
  • Ignition System Problems (Ex. Faulty Spark Plug, Defective ignition coil, Engine Misfire.)
  • Faulty Modules and Sensors (Ex. Dirty / Faulty / Loose oxygen sensor, a clogged-up mass airflow sensor)
  • Overheating (Ex. Poor Engine Coolant, Faulty EngineThermostat,WARRANTS 'Stop Driving' immediately.)

DOs AND DON'Ts

If the EWL JUST ‘ON’, Drive slowly, avoid heavy loads and straining the engine. Back home and halt the car if you are nearby. Do simple check like at Fuel tank lid. Start and check whether it appears again.
If you are away from home, check fuel tank lids and halt the car for some time. Have a good habit of refilling the fuel periodically @ at least one third level, before it gets to reserve level.
If this issue continues or repeats after some time, take the car straight to service /OBD Scanner check to pin point the errors.
Most common issue is with O2 sensors. Simple cleaning of O2 Sensor from dust is easy solution, but a defective sensor need to be replaced.

NOTE - SIGNS:
BAD O2 SENSOR: 1. Engine Light Comes On 2. Loss of Fuel Efficiency. 3. Sulfur or 'Rotten Egg' smell from Exhaust. 4. Black smoke from exhaust. 5. Emission levels reach high levels. 6. Engine hesitates, skips, or has power surges.
LOW OIL LEVEL: Being low on oil is a serious problem, but it won’t trigger the check engine light. Instead, it’ll activate the oil light.
However, low oil pressure can switch on the engine light.

If the EWL ‘BLINKING FAST’
, avoid driving further, Halt the car in a safer side/place. Call for service help. It prevents further damage while driving towards the service center.

Do not take an EMISSIONS TEST with an Illuminated Check Engine Light.

Car O2 Sensor.jpg

COMING TO YOUR CASE:

The Artificial Intelligence with ECM software clears the issue automatically as programmed, as it may not be a major issue. You tested at Service Station about the ECM Health at the time the EWL disappeared, that’s why no error code could be found.

We need to check during the time of its appearance to know the cause before it gets cleared automatically.

For this, we need to get the help of Service station at that time (or) by DIY, using a OBD II ELM327 Scanner Code Readers. Beware about /avoid cheap Chinese ones.

CAR OBD SCANNER - WHAT TO LOOK INTO ?

Have you purchased any good quality OBD 2 readers?
Please bear with me, let me explain in detail for the benefit of others.[:)]

As we know, there are two types OBD Scanners available in the Market :
1. Basic and 2. Professional / Advanced.

Basic Versions require third party APPs/Software to work with BT or Wi-Fi.
Advanced ones generally have their own inbuilt software.
Basic ones are affordable, useful for individuals.
Professional ones are very expensive that mostly used at Professional Garages.

I had ( Still have) the first Chinese ELM 327 one for my ALBUS - Honda City. I have detailed my experience elaborately HERE.
I have at present MAGICIAN F835 OBD Scanner for my IGNIS, and given a detailed write up about the same HERE.

Now, The market is flooded with Rebranded copy cats ... Good to Bad ones, almost everything is manufactured / duplicated with unreliable components by many Chinese manufacturers.[frustration]

I am giving here an illustrated picture as a simple guide for those who are interested in such Gadget.

Thank you for the images. That's an interesting gadget in your Ignis.

I have been using OBD 2 devices from my Ritz days i.e., ~2011 or so. But now that electronics and cars have become sophisticated, I am looking for something that can go deeper and give me more information which I need. We at home have 2 Maruti's (2018 and 2023 model) and 1 Hyundai (2017 model) so I am looking for something that can scan both these cars as Maruti uses SDT (Suzuki Diagnostic Tool) whereas Hyundai uses G-Scan 3 or so in their cars which are proprietary to each.

I am using the generic Chinese branded OBD 2 scanners through the Torque PRO application (Android).

SUZUKI IGNIS TYRE UPSIZING: THE PROS & CONS!

OE SPECIFICATION:

IGNIS comes with OE – RIM Diameter Size of 15 Inches/ 5J Rim Width / PCD 100/ 4 HOLES/Tyre Size 175/65/R15.

Upgrading with OE Alloy Wheel / Steel Wheel:
The ideal tire width size is 175 and we can stretch maximum to 185.
Therefore, the OE tyre width of 175 is the best suited, despite some owners found upgraded to 185.

Upgrading with Aftermarket Alloy Wheel:
Buying Aftermarket Alloy Wheels is depending upon the tyre width that we prefer. If we feel OE recommended size 175 as okay, then we can go for 5/5.5J Rim Width.
If we like 185, we should go for 5.5/6J Alloy Wheels.
If we prefer still wider tyres like 195 or 205, then 6/6.5J Alloy Wheels that we need to purchase.

TYRE UPSIZING ISSUES OVER OE ALLOYS:
The common aftermarket tyre swapping that I noticed in IGNIS is 185/65/15 or 195/60/15.
The 185/65/15 on OE Alloys are okay, it increases GC by 5mm, also better grip & little comfortable ride but the deviation @2.1% is at higher side.
The 195/60/15 on OE Alloys, though on least deviation@1%, it becomes abnormal, look squeezed on 5J Rim and endangering safety.

MY OPINION:
My wife and I use IGNIS mostly within City limits and we prefer only the OE recommended tyre size (175/65/15), may be a different tyre brand like MICHELIN / YOKOHAMA/ CONTI next time … though I would love to look our IGNIS on broader tyres.[;)]
(If at all I prefer, I would change the alloys to 6/6.5J and go with 195/60/15 tyres)

PLEASE NOTE: Pros and Cons of Upsizing!

PROS:
  • Looks Attractive & Magnificent!
  • Better road grip (more tyre surface area touching ground)
  • More stability at high speed
  • Firmness in drive
CONS:
  • Negative impact on mileage (Yes, there will be around 2-4 drop in mileage in City & while on Highway around 2 drop - KMP/L) [sad]
  • Slight reduction in steering response
  • Inaccuracy in Speedometer / Odometer Readings
  • More expensive. You need to buy new Alloy Wheels too.
  • Ignoring the Risks & Rules before Upsize, the Car Handling will be Impacted.

SUZUKI IGNIS TYRE UPSIZES – PROS & CONS!

@ Winner_takes_all_
Thanks for your visit to my thread. Please bear with me for the delay in responding to your query as I was occupied abroad.[:D]

The common and popular tire sizes for the IGNIS are:

175/65/15 on 5j RIM – OE and Standard .Honestly, it ensures to keep the good ride quality of the IGNIS.

185/60 R15 – Ideal upsize as it would be within 2% tolerance limit and fits well in max recommended tire width in 5j OE RIM. Upsized to 10 mm more, looks broader, but, at the cost of lowering the GC. May affect the suspension in future depending upon our ride quality.

185/65/R15 - Looks aesthetically nice, neither too wide nor too thin. Has a deviation value of 2.1% - which is bit on the higher side, it increases ground clearance by 5-6 mm in IGNIS whose suspension is stiff. The increased GC under heavy load, makes handling a bit wobbly. I wouldn't recommend 185/65 for the already high GC IGNIS.

195/60/R15- Looks beautiful. Gives 20 mm upsize. Requires right aftermarket Alloys of 6 to 6.5J with correct center bore size. Risky on stock alloys of 5J width. The tires would look a bit ballooned out and holding a lot of weight on the sidewalls over pinched OE 5J RIM. Prone for tire noise on over speeding.

205/55/15 – Looks gorgeous. The size has the least deviation on proper RIM size, but the tire would stick out and may rub against the suspension or walls while turning. Not Recommended for day-to-day use.

My sincere advice for those who use the car for normal day-to-day use, avoid upsizing if the need is not fundamental & upgrade to excellent, high-quality rubber in stock size.
