Introduced in September 2011, the Mahindra XUV500 will finally undergo a full model change next year. Road testing of the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 has begun, spy shots posted by MotorOctane have revealed.

The spy shots suggest that the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will look drastically different, thanks to completely changed, more modern proportions. It will be bumper-to-bumper all-new. Unlike the old model, it should feature LED headlights and LED tail lights. A detail which is easily visible in the spy shots is that the rear quarter glass has reduced significantly in size, while the back glass appears to be slightly more raked for a more attractive stance.
Mahindra is likely clubbing the expertise of MNATC (USA), Pininfarina (Italy) and MRV (India) for the design and engineering to ready the next-generation XUV500. The all-new model will have a monocoque construction just like the current-gen model, but at the same time, it will sit on a newly built platform. This platform will be used by Ford also for a new C-SUV developed especially for India. The all-new XUV500 will employ a newly developed 180 PS 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Mahindra has been readying a number of new products for 2020 which also include the next-gen Thar and next-gen Scorpio. The all-new XUV500 is likely to be launched by the end of calendar next year, after these other crucial products.

2020 Mahindra XUV500 Interior Spied

2020-mahindra-xuv500-dashboard-spied-2.jpg

Mahindra is testing the second generation XUV500. MotorBeamer Gokul Raj has spotted the prototype revealing interior details of the new SUV.

The dashboard looks very similar to the Kia Seltos. It gets a single cluster integrating the touchscreen and instrument cluster in one panel. The touchscreen infotainment system looks huge in size.

The AC vents are now positioned under the screen unlike the current XUV500’s side by side positioning. There is a new flat-bottom steering wheel design which looks less bulky and gets integrated controls.

The instrument cluster is expected to be a semi-digital unit with new colours. You can also notice the flush door handles in the spy shot which looks inspired by the Jaguar F-Type.

Mahindra XUV500 BS6 specs, variants detailed before launch

2020-mahindra-xuv500-bs6-specs-leak.jpg

Mahindra has currently started testing the second generation XUV500, which will be a first proper upgrade of the SUV in almost a decade. However, as the launch of the next gen XUV500 is still few months away, Mahindra has readied a BS6 variant of the XUV which it can sell post the introduction of BS6 norms.

For the BS6 variant, Mahindra will be using the same 2.2 litre diesel motor, however it will be adding in a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and an SCR system. These additions will help Mahindra to make the SUV BS6 emission norms compliant. Power output figures are expected to remain constant as on the BS4 variant, that would mean the motor will be churning out 155hp & 360Nm of max torque.

The next generation XUV500, which has been on test is scheduled to make its debut sometime later this year. The SUV is based on an all new platform (which reportedly will be shared between Ford too) and will be drawing power from an all new 2 litre diesel motor (which will be shared by the upcoming Scorpio and Thar too). Mahindra might use the 2020 Auto Expo as a platform to either reveal the model or showcase a pre-production teaser, however nothing has been confirmed till now.

Mahindra has been rigorously testing the next-gen XUV500 SUV in India for a few months now. The company is gearing up to introduce this new SUV in our market sometime early next year, most likely by March 2021, instead of a mid-2020 launch as reported earlier. The current-gen XUV500 will chug along for now and will receive a BS6-compliant engine soon. This development was confirmed by Dr Pawan Goenka, MD & CEO, Mahindra & Mahindra, recently at an earnings call.

The new XUV500 is expected to have similar body panels and interior bits as the Mahindra Funster convertible SUV concept showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. The new SUV will feature a more squarish design with an upright nose, flatter panels for the doors, and a hood that will blend with the SUV’s silhouette that will be unmistakably XUV500. Key styling elements will include the Mahindra family grille and slightly smaller headlamps. It will also come with Mahindra’s signature vertically placed daytime-running lamps that first debuted on the XUV300. Expect LED headlamps and daytime running lamps to be offered as standard on the higher variants.

Next-gen Mahindra XUV500: New details revealed

The second-generation XUV500 is based on a new monocoque chassis and is codenamed ‘Mahindra W601’. The whole car will have sharp character lines and will be much more muscular than the current generation. The front-end of the SUV will redesigned and will get a new grille and sleeker looking headlamps. It will also get a redesigned LED DRL which will add up to the butch look at the front.

2020-xuv500-render-2.jpg

Earlier this year at the Auto Expo, Mahindra had also revealed their brand new range of turbocharged petrol engines. The new engines fall under mStallion series and are available in 1.2 litre turbo, 1.5 litre turbo and 2.0 litre turbo units. The upcoming XUV500 will be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged unit from this series. The 2.0 litre turbocharged engine is capable of generating a maximum of 190 Bhp and 380 Nm of torque. Along with petrol engine, Mahindra will also provide a 2.2 litre diesel version on this SUV.

Mahindra is unlikely to offer the AWD version in the upcoming XUV500. The next-generation XUV500 however will be getting a choice between manual and an automatic gearbox. The current generation of the SUV competes with cars like Tata Harrier, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta in the segment.

Mahindra has reintroduced the Aisin-sourced 6-speed, torque-converter automatic unit with its 155hp, 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine – a combination previously available in BS4 spec. The gearbox comes equipped with a creep function and a sequential manual mode.

The automatic gearbox-equipped variants cost a premium of about Rs 1.21 lakh over their manual gearbox-equipped counterparts – the same as in the BS4 model.

@Nairrk sir, I noticed in your post, you have used term reintroduced Aisin sourced 6-speed Torque Converter Automatic, just asking out of curiosity, which gearbox was used in previous gen?
I think, they (original contributor) may be referring to present 6 speed manual gearbox with forthcoming Automatic gear box and given an explanation what kind of new gear box the vehicle will have. May be, anyone who owns as previous gen XUV500 can explain which gearbox was used in that model.

See here, some explanation /comparison of the new and the old one:

//

Mahindra XUV500 Automatic Gearbox
The XUV500 comes with a second-generation AISIN traverse transmission. Mahindra claims that this is the second generation gearbox that is lighter and a lot more efficient than the previous generation. This same transmission is used by Mahindra on the Ssangyong Tivoli and the Ssangyong Korando-C as well. This transmission has been designed for transverse engines, so it cannot fit in the Scorpio. Mahindra has a longitudinal engine with rear wheel drive. This is where is the difference is between the duo. The current Mahindra Scorpio transmission is different. Mahindra claims that this is the new future transmission indicating that all the automatics that are likely to be used by Mahindra or Ssangyong could be made by AISIN. This is a Japanese transmission manufacturer with one of the highest market share in automatic transmissions.

Aisin sourced transmission is quite reliable, have heard many brands using the same since 2000s. I hope they provide a paddle shift in XUV, rather than the unergonomical Toggle switch in gear lever.

Mahindra XUV500 Automatic BS6 Launched; Prices Start From ₹ 16.07 Lakh

2018-mahindra-xuv500-facelift-review_827x510_41524038086.jpg

Mahindra & Mahindra has announced prices for the XUV500 BS6 automatic variants on its website. The BS6 Mahindra XUV500 AT range starts at ₹ 16.07 lakh for the W7 variant, followed by the W9 variant priced at ₹ 17.78 lakh, while the range-topping W11 (O) variant is priced at ₹ 19.30 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi). Compared to the manual, the automatic versions command a premium by up to ₹ 1.23 lakh, depending on the variant. The XUV500 automatic was discontinued in April this year with the transition to the BS6 norms but makes a comeback with the same 6-speed torque convertor.

The Aisin sourced automatic transmission comes with the creep function aimed to improved tractability at crawling speeds in the city. The motor is paired with the updated 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that develops 153 bhp and 360 Nm of peak torque. The power figures are the same on the manual version as well that uses a 6-speed gearbox. The feature list remains identical on the manual and automatic with the electric sunroof, electrically adjustable driver's seat, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, push-button start/stop, vehicle telematics and more.

2021 Mahindra XUV500 Spied Up Close - LED DRLs, Headlamps, Sunroof

First Xuv500 was Cheetah inspired vehicle and we liked it and that one looked like one. Two alterations came as update and still that Cheetah was bit visible but now looks like Mahindra is inspired by some different animal for this Xuv500 2021 update.

I can see this is the closest match for those headlamps and facia. No offense to Xuv500 owners and lovers but this design reminds me of this .

Got a glimpse of the new XUV 500 on my way to Chennai.
Couldn't chase it as I was driving my Nano.

But here are my quick observations:
  1. It is going to have a big grille and has massive presence
  2. The car is longer and wider than the current model, but the height is going to be less.
  3. There is panoramic sunroof on what appears to be top spec variant.
  4. The rear fascia reminds me of the Innova Crysta with the protruding spoiler and upright tailgate.
