I am glad that the original company is getting the recognition for its brand heritage, and the pretenders are now beginning to worry a bit! Mahindra and Tata are fooling no one by printing out panicky ads like they did. People have simply moved on to the real deal, its good looking, and somewhat affordable too. I would also like to state that Mahindra had a good advantage in the beginning with the XUV. But they failed to capitalize on its success, and instead, brought in the ever-so-ugly TUV. Now the XUV is kind of middle-of-nowhere. No longer the coolest soft-roader nor a hard-core off-roader.

yeah 8100 bookings is well deserved for them and improves trust in the brand
with this kind of success, I think they might make a Ford style comeback instead of Chevy style exit

Did you mean that you test driven petrol Compass ? I think it will not be avaialble before October.
Yes I drove it in US, but I realized now the one which I drove in the US is a 2.4 Multiair with Aisin gearbox not the 1.4 Multi Air with DCT thats coming in October to India
Still its a lovely engine (2.4L) , I hope it comes to India with TrailHawk variant

I can bet that this is my favorite post on this entire forum.
I did TD the car
I drove one which was delivered just a week back to someone in my far circle, and was actually amongst the first lot. Diesel top end 4x2.

Space is more like Creta but best suited for 4
That's like comparing an 'orange' to an 'apple', just because both are round. IMO Creta is only cheaper, else Compass s VFM but Creta feels overpriced - huge difference bwteeen what one offers for the money they ask for.

Engines are punchy but manual diesel has heavy clutch, gearing and steering , typical FCA
I won't agree at all over the clutch point. This was the first thing I highlighted to Vibhor (350Z) that clutch was just awesome and very progressive too, in fact I have fallen a victim of its releasing action, it felt so good and well damped.

DCT petrol is very smooth and actually reminds me of 1.2 TSI in VW but alot more punchy
Put everything aside and tell me which dealer gave you the TD?

I personally feel in lower variants pricing, you get Creta with 6 airbags in manual SXO and an excellent torque converter diesel variant for 50k lesser than base Jeep which doesnt get alot of goodies
[sleep]

Interiors are a mixed bag, feels a bit cheap and bit premium at the same time
Please give an example, and not something that's read in a magazine or seen in a video.

So basically any personal views here is frowned upon?
Creta feels more spacious and suspension is softer , excellent for taller people like me who have frequent back pain
Headroom at the rear is pretty poor in Compass....

I drove the petrol one in USA, not here, I didnt know the one there was 2.4 Multi Air with Aisin box not 1.4 Multi Air with DCT which is coming here until I cross checked recently

Clutch point is too high and I didnt like it much, its a lot like VAG clutches, so thats why you must like it so much, I personally didnt like it coming from years of driving cars with the 1.3MJD, I know my Fiat engines well.

As for calling Creta overpriced and Compass VFM, thats purely subjective and not true given Compass lacks interior space, quality of plastics feels tacky and cheap in some places especially near AC vents, design reminded me of the Duster but alot better of course
Why is Creta overpriced if for 18L on road, you get 6 airbags variant with 6 speed manual and a refined well established engine in India (1.6 CRDI) OR slighly lesser equipped 1.6 CRDI with 6 speed torque converter AT

Whereas base compass offers basically nothing for 17L and the 22L petrol AT variant doesnt get 6 airbags , diesel top end manual variant is 25L on road which is coming close to Hyundai Tucson territory (28L on road GLS AT variant) which is a clear segment above

I took extensive TDs of all cars in my price range including Hexa, Fortuner, Endeavour, GLA, Tucson, BMW X1, Audi Q3 and waited for the Jeep compass before I made my booking for the Tucson

For someone looking for something between the Creta and Tucson, the Compass certainly makes sense because its slotted that way

Theres nothing VFM or Overpriced about anything
Also Compass is based off the Fiat 500L monocoque platform not the older Jeep platforms and 4x4 variants are not only more expensive but also only available in only diesel variant

Lastly Jeep is a last resort effort from FCA after not having a showroom in a market like Mumbai for nearly 3 years until last year, no new launches and they were busy selling 2015 stock until recently
Whats to say they wont pull a Chevrolet? Im one of the unfortunate victims of Chevy's exit
And after sales? only 48 in the country
Jeep isnt exactly known for its reliability abroad either and has yet to prove itself

Also DCT is a poor choice for the Indian market, the AISIN torque converter would have fared better here
Also the upcoming ZF9 is a controversial one

FYI AISIN and ZF8 are also used by BMW , Jaguar etc and didnt have such instances

I do like the Compass overall and Im seriously considering it as my next car after my Tucson arrives but I have considered clear pros and cons before posting

I would second certain arguments of @kkn13

- Its a strict 4 seater + 1 child
- Top variants in India miss out on certain bells and whistles - 6 airbags, cruise control, boot release button in smartkey, 8" display, auto dimming IRVM, auto headlamps, auto wipers, sunroof, etc.

For a vehicle this size and this price, I would have expected 5 adults to fit in with ease and also have all the features listed above.

I was under consideration that Compass does compete against Tuscon and VW Tiguan, and not Creta, Hexa or XUV 5OO. I think it's just because of sweet pricing that people are comparing it with the above stated cars (Creta, Hexa, XUV 5OO).

Compass does have 6 airbags. For reference you can click here.

Many people are waiting for Traikhawk version. After seeing its off road capabilities it will be surely a winner however FCA is tight lipped on its launch in India.

True 3 adults will be tight squeeze in the back however people with small families will not complain.

6 airbags are available on 4 X 4 limited only - bad decision by FCA . I see many of these features might come in the face-lift version like Cruise Control , Sunroof etc however to add people do expect features like auto dimming IRVM, auto headlamps, auto wipers in a car costing 2 million.

True you are correct. World wide Compass does compete against Tuscon & Tiguan however post the pricing of the Jeep suddenly the comparison with Creta doing rounds. I will repeat my self Compass is notch above Creta.

Compass is a notch above Creta and one below Tucson given the space inside and some bells and whistles
Slots right in between to create its own segment

I think a lot of people are missing some points here, see the Compass is not at all a competitor to Creta, sure in space etc they can be compared to the platform itself is far far far superior to anything in that price range let alone Tuscon and VW Tiguan and VW X1, Audi Q3,Mercedes GLA etc
Do remember the Compass chassis is derived from a stretched Renegade platform which is super tough and born to do hardcore stuff, its just that FCA has toned down it for India and made it more on road friendly as more Indians prefer soft road vehicles

Also at this introductory price point the Jeep is a steal, we often criticize space, quality etc, but the fact remains that the Compass is a TRUE SUV unlike Creta,

If one wants a ROBUST powerful yet understated machine the Jeep is miles and miles ahead of Creta, or anything in its vicinity, its a ruff and tough package unlike the soft packages from dare I say boring Hyundais and Marutis.

True SUV? At the cost of comfort , features, after sales, resale value, only 2 airbags in every variant except top end diesel manual variant and questionable reliability in comparison to the Creta?
Would you suggest base variant C segment, lower engine sedan to someone looking to buy a powerful, top variant Compact Sedan? See what Im getting at?
Where exactly do everyday people do hardcore stuff?
Would you suggest a Fortuner buyer to purchase a Mahindra Thar even if he isnt gonna use it for off roading?

Superior to Tucson, Tiguan, BMW X1, Audi Q3 and GLA is subjective
Tucson and Tiguan are far superior and a segment above
X1 has a better transmission and badge value etc, better comfort too
Q3 and GLA are certainly threatened by Compass though, neither offers anything that would make me spend double the money and take them over the Compass, Id buy 2 Compass's, one petrol and one diesel for the price of Q3 or GLA and still have enough money left over to keep in the bank and enjoy servicing and running my Compasses off the interest

See I know Compass is slotted right between Creta and Tucson but certainly you cannot compare it with either unless you consider all factors , variants, price

Also Compass and Renegade now are based on Fiat 500X platform not the older platform that people are thinking it to be

I don't think sharing platform is that a crime, one of the best thing for me about Jeep Compass & Renegade is that it's based on a platform from FCA,and engineering done focussing the Fiat. I don't think Indian market is that matured for accepting true blue Jeeps like wrangler even if it's locally produced, the brand appeals much towards those who prefer that kind of involving lifestyle than the boring reliability of a Japanese, like we Indians prefer. Here comes the Compass & Renegade which does have that family appeal & Fiats involving dynamics & superb engines, both petrol & Diesels!
Just have a look at the cars this platform underpins ! its that flexible for a funky crossover or Capable Compact SUVs or even a Compact Pick up!

Also note that the Tucson shares its platform with Kia cousin Sportage ,actually much more than just platform its a reskinning ,Elantra and even the Verna !
Same for Tiguan which sits on the scalable MQB which underpins cars right from new Polo !
