2018 Hyundai Santro spied testing – Looks bigger than Renault Kwid

Production of the 2018 Santro has already started at Hyundai’s Chennai plant. The upcoming hatchback has been spotted on Indian roads on numerous occasions, however this is the first time it gives us a basic understanding of its size.

Thanks to the spy shot shared by Mr Rajendran, the Hyundai Santro in the image is seen next to a Renault Kwid. Yes, it is difficult to correctly gather the size of this car, but it does look bigger than Renault Kwid in the photo.

In terms of design, it will incorporate the Fluidic 2.0 design philosophy and certain design cues from i10 and i20. Power is expected to be drawn out of the 1 litre 3-cylinder petrol motor which currently powers the Eon, however there is no official confirmation regarding the same.

Photos revealing the car’s interiors have also surfaced on the internet earlier. The spyshots reveal a dashboard design which looks similar to the dashboard on the first generation i10. Photos also reveal that there will be a centre console which will have amber coloured illuminated buttons.

A basic infotainment system is also visible in the photos however no touch-screen unit seems to be on offer, at least on the grade which has been spied testing. Hyundai might plan to add a touch-screen infotainment on the top trim as Kwid’s top-end also gets the same.

The instrument cluster seems to consist of two analogue dials, a speedometer and a tachometer. Additionally, a small MID unit sits towards the right of the cluster which could provide basic information regarding the car, like trip details etc. The hatchback gets a bench seat at the rear while front seats get integrated headrests. Door panels mostly will provide integrated hand rests for comfort of the passengers.

Once launched, Hyundai Santro (internally code named AH2) will replace the Eon in Hyundai’s line-up while it will compete with the likes of Maruti Alto, Renault Kwid, Tata Tiago and the upcoming 2018 Datsun Go.

Re: New Hyundai Santro Spied Testing. Launch Soon

Some observations:

1. TAI is only forum where one can find clear images and video of new Santro.

2. They say tall boy concept. How tall it is? from the videos it appears to be no taller than Maruti Swift, though rear passengers will get sufficient headroom.

3. 1L engine capacity would be too less IMHO. For old Santro, low end pickup was big USP that comes from excellent four cylinder engine. Few years back, I had driven i10, honestly, with AC ON, I found it underpowered, especially going uphill.

4. Ground clearance look adequate but front bonnet look closer to the ground than rear.

It will be seen with a similar design language, a full face front grille and LED DRLs as seen on the Grand i10 along with black inserts on the bumpers while tail lamp design will be borrowed from the Eon.

Interiors of the new Hyundai Santro will be of more premium quality as compared to its earlier model. New Hyundai Santro spotted wearing low-cost CEAT tyres on test

Hyundai Motors India Limited is getting ready to launch the new Santro, a good 4 years after the old generation Santro was pulled off production lines in 2014. The first Santro was the car which launched Hyundai in India. It was on sale in India for a total of 16 years since launch in 1998.

It will go on sale once again, this time as the new generation 2018 Santro – where it will be seen as a complete family car, thanks to a longer and wider body. The new Santro is in its final test phase. Recently, the Santro was spotted wearing CEAT FuelSmarrt tyres. These are low cost tyres which are on offer with entry level variants. They are affordable, and last longer.

Hyundai had launched an online campaign called ‘Hyundai Naamkaran’ to seek suggestions into what this new hatchback should be called. However, nearly 30% of around 1.5 lakh entrants who participated in this campaign suggest that the name should be ‘Santro’.

The campaign closes on 15th September when entries are set to cross 5 lakhs. However, it is clear that the name ‘Santro’ will emerge as a winner and that is what the new hatchback could be called on launch in October.

Once all entries are in and the campaign closed, there will be a draw on the names shortlisted. The winner will be gifted the Hyundai Santro (AH2) by brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan and Y K Yoo, Managing Director of Hyundai at the official launch of the car.

2018-hyundai-santro-ceat-tyres-2.jpg

New Hyundai Santro is based on the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. It will look more like the current Grand i10 in looks. Interiors will get spacious and more premium. It will get a touchscreen infotainment system as well as steering mounted controls. Airbags and ABS will be offered as standard.

Speaking about engines, expect a revised 1.0 liter petrol engine to power the 2018 Santro. It will be offered with a 5 speed MT and AMT Smart Auto option. Once launched, the new Santro will rival Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Renault Kwid, and Tata Tiago. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 3 lakhs.

2018 Hyundai Santro new colour spied – Exp. price lower than Maruti WagonR

2018 Hyundai Santro is being actively tested in India ahead of launch. Its recent sighting showed off its low cost CEAT tyres while another test mule spotted in Chennai, showed a distinctive shade of ‘Star Dust’. This ‘Star Dust’ exterior color paint is common to the Grand i10, Verna, Creta and Xcent in the company lineup.

Hyundai’s upcoming hatchback will be launched in India on October 23, 2018. It will follow the same tall boy stance as seen on the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. To be positioned below the Grand i10, expect price tag of the Hyundai Santro to be lower than that of Maruti WagonR, Tata Tiago.

2018-hyundai-santro-photos-price-colour-wagonr-2.jpg

Maruti WagonR is priced from Rs 4.3 lakhs, while the Tata Tiago is priced from Rs 3.46 lakhs and Kwid 1 liter from Rs 3.87 lakhs. It is expected that the launch price of Hyundai Santro will be lower than all three rivals above.

Hyundai Santro will be positioned on a new version of the i10 HA platform which is considerably safer as compared to the low cost PA platform seen on the Eon. Set to come in with a host of safety features such as dual airbags, driver and co-driver seat belt reminder, central locking system, speed alert, rear parking sensors and ABS, 2018 Hyundai Santro will also get a dash mounted gear lever while top of the line variants will receive a touchscreen infotainment system.

Engine specifications on the Hyundai Santro will include an updated BS VI compliant 1 liter, 4 cylinder petrol engine which was seen powering the earlier generation Hyundai i10. On the i10 it was capable of 68 bhp power and 99 Nm torque which could be tweaked for added power and torque on the Santro.

The engine will be mated to a 5 speed manual transmission as standard or AMT. This will also be the first time Hyundai launches a car with AMT. They are reportedly calling their AMT tech as Smart Auto.

Re: New Hyundai Santro Spied Testing. Launch Soon

New Hyundai Santro production to start later this month – Sales could cross 15k before Diwali 2018

As Hyundai gets closer to the launch of the AH2 hatchback (most likely to be called the Santro) more details about the same have started to pour in. As per certain internal sources, Hyundai will stock-up at least 15k units of the upcoming hatchback, ahead of its launch. All these 15,000 units of the new Hyundai Santro are expected to be delivered to customers before Diwali 2018.

Talking about features, Hyundai is expected to provide ABS, rear-parking sensors and dual-air bags as standard across the range. Top variant is also expected to receive a touch-screen infotainment unit. A dash-mounted gear lever is also a possibility however there is no confirmation on the same.

hyundai-car-plant-india-manufacture-chennai-8.jpg

Multiple spy-shots have already revealed that the Santro will sport a tall-boy design, much like its predecessor, the Eon and the original Santro. Power is expected to be drawn from a 4 cylinder 1.1-litre petrol engine which has powered Hyundai cars in the past.

The petrol burner will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and will also see an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) setup – a first for any Hyundai car in India. Hyundai will call it the Smart Auto.

Currently, Hyundai has the Eon in the segment which has been managing around 4k sales monthly. However, its closest competitors, WagonR, Celerio and Tiago bring in around 14k, 8k and 8k sales (respectively) for their companies. Hyundai believes that the new product will help it to bring in additional sales volumes which the Eon wasn’t able to deliver.

Hyundai is expected to reveal the exact name of the car on 9th October 2018 where inputs from Hyundai’s Naamkaran contest shall make significant contribution. In case you have a suggestion for Hyundai, you can still drop the same at their website as entries are open till 25th September 2018. Prices for the 2018 Santro are expected to start around the Rs 3.5 lakh mark and might get extend upto Rs 5 lakh for the top-end variant.

Re: New Hyundai Santro Spied Testing. Launch Soon

Santro name all set to return on Hyundai AH2 hatchback

If there were any doubts about what Hyundai would name its upcoming hatchback (codenamed AH2), you can put them all to rest now, as the carmaker has shared data from its naming contest, and – surprise, surprise – the Santro has emerged as the leading choice by some margin.

As part of its Naamkaran contest, Hyundai invited the Indian public to chip in with their name suggestions for the AH2 hatchback, and from among all the options, the illustrious 'Santro' name has received overwhelming support. From the over four lakh entries so far, more than two lakh entries want the AH2 to be named 'Santro'.

The closest any other name has gotten to that figure is 'i5' – the rationale behind it being the AH2 will sit a segment below the Grand i10 – and even that received only 663 votes. The other names in the running are Saneon (a mash-up of Santro and Eon, which received 443 votes) and Splash, which has received 426 votes. So it's safe to say that unless Hyundai decides to add a suffix to the name, the AH2 will, in all likelihood, be called the new Santro.

There are other advantages to reviving the nameplate as well. The Santro was the car that introduced Hyundai to the Indian public, and despite it being discontinued in 2014, the name still has a huge brand recall. Going with the name will also help Hyundai save on marketing costs, as it doesn’t have to establish a new brand from scratch.

The carmaker has put in an effort to make the new car as spacious as possible, and as is the case with every Hyundai, it will be loaded with features, including some segment-firsts such as rear AC vents and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Powering it will be an updated version of the 1.1-litre Epsilon petrol engine, which will be more fuel efficient than before, with a claimed efficiency figure of 20.1kpl. It will also be the first Hyundai to get an automated manual transmission, and will also be available with a factory-fitted CNG kit.

Hyundai will launch the new Santro in India on October 23, and it will go up against the likes of the Tata Tiago and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio.

New Hyundai Santro: features to be key differentiator

Hyundai cars are known to be feature-rich and the brand’s upcoming Santro hatchback will be no different. In fact, some of the Santro's features will help it go one up on hatchback rivals, when it arrives on October 23, 2018.

Besides sporting a plush (for the segment) cabin, a highlight of the new Santro’s interior will be the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (on higher variants), which is expected to come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Neither of the Santro’s key rivals, the Tata Tiago and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, get a touchscreen infotainment system at the moment. Another first for this segment, and a feature that will set the Santro apart, will be the addition of rear AC vents.

In terms of safety kit, dual front airbags and ABS will be standard. Additionally, in order to comply with upcoming safety regulations, expect the tall-boy hatchback to also sport standard rear parking sensors. Higher-spec variants of the Santro will also come with a parking camera, which is a segment-first. The top two trims of the Tata Tiago, the XT and XZ (and the respective AMT variants) come with rear parking sensors at the moment, while the Maruti Suzuki does not offer this feature on the Celerio.

The new Santro will also be the first Hyundai to be equipped with an automated manual gearbox. An updated version of Hyundai’s 1.1-litre Epsilon petrol engine will come with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT, both of which are claimed to have a fuel efficiency figure of 20.1kpl. While this transmission is not a segment-first, it will help Hyundai price an automatic version of the hatchback at a much more competitive level.

Taking about the Santro’s price tag in comparison to its competition, Hyundai is expected to continue its trend of pegging its models at a slight premium. The Tata Tiago is priced between Rs 3.40 lakh and Rs 5.22 lakh for the petrol-manual variants, while the petrol-AMT options cost between Rs 5.04 lakh and Rs 5.63 lakh. On the other hand, manual versions of the Celerio carry a price tag between Rs 4.21 lakh and Rs 5.28 lakh, while the AMT-equipped models are priced from Rs 4.98 lakh to Rs 5.40 lakh.

Hyundai will also introduce a CNG-powered variant of the Santro to compete with the Celerio CNG, which is priced at Rs 5.17-5.32 lakh. While the Tata does not get a CNG option, it does come with a diesel motor that is priced from Rs 5.21 lakh to Rs 6.05 lakh.

All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi

New Hyundai Santro Pics Leaked, Launch This Month

This 1.1-litre petrol engine for the new 2018 Hyundai Santro comes from the old i10 but if gets updated to offer a slightly higher fuel efficiency, better performance figures, and lower emissions. The motor will offer an ARAI-claimed mileage of 20.3 kmpl.

Another premium feature that the top-end trim of the new 2018 Hyundai Santro will offer is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Again, this is a feature that isn’t available on the Maruti Wagon R or the Renault Kwid and will give the Santro an upper edge over its direct rivals.

Another premium feature that the new Santro will offer is steering-mounted controls for the audio system. This is another feature that is generally not found in cars of this segment. Again, it will help the new Hyundai Santro have an edge over its rivals.

2018 Hyundai Santro to get new segment first features – Expected price Rs 3.6 lakhs

Coming back once again to attract buyers in its segment after being discontinued in 2014, bookings of the new Santro will open on October 11 while launch is scheduled for October 23, 2018. Expected sales target could be in the region of 10,000 units a month. It will be rival to Maruti WagonR and Tata Tiago. Only petrol engine will be on offer. Price could start from Rs 3.6 lakhs. Here are important new features;

1. Touchscreen infotainment system: Hyundai Santro is slated to sport the latest touchscreen infotainment system. This 5” touchscreen infotainment system is the same as that is seen on the Hyundai Elantra that runs on a new processor and offers more connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes with Bluetooth and also doubles up as a display for reverse camera.

2. Rear AC vents: To make the new Hyundai Santro even more attractive in the affordable hatchback segment, Hyundai will fit the Santro with first in class rear Air Conditioning vents which will offer uniform and efficient cooling throughout the cabin. This is one feature most car buyers will love to have.

3. Smart Auto AMT Transmission: Hyundai Santro will be the first Hyundai model to get an optional ‘Smart Auto’ AMT transmission. Positioned on the first generation i10 HA platform, the 1.1 liter Epsilon petrol engine will send power to wheels via a 5 speed manual transmission or a 5 speed automated manual transmission called Smart Auto. The Hyundai Santro will also get a CNG variant.

4. Fuel Efficient Engine and Spacious Cabin: The tall boy hatchback Hyundai Santro will be wider than its earlier counterpart and will be seen with sufficient of head, leg and shoulder room for its five occupants. This feature along with a more efficient engine is what will make the Santro once more a hot favorite in the country. The 1.1-litre Epsilon petrol engine could offer 65 hp and fuel efficiency to the tune of 22 kmpl.

5. Safety Features: To comply with new safety standards coming into effect from July 2019, the list of safety features on the new Hyundai Santro will include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, seatbelt reminder, speed warning system and reverse parking sensors. It will also be seen with speed sensing door locks as standard.

Re: New Hyundai Santro Spied Testing. Launch Soon

Hyundai has taken the interior quality and features a step ahead with the Santro. Wagon R will surely face some competition here with another established name bringing a great product.
I wonder what the buttons behind the gear lever do. Most probably for power windows, but still the shape does not exactly look like power windows switches.
AMT would be a first for Hyundai, and I am sure would bring some happiness for customers who used to avoid smaller Hyundai automatics for their lack of fuel efficiency.
