Smartphone maker Xiaomi applied for a sales license for their first EV in China – the Xiaomi SU7 sedan. It revealed some car specifications, and the EV will be contract-manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC). The EV was previously known under the codename MS11.

In China, every car must be approved by the local regulator before hitting the market, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) publishes the list of vehicles that go through the homologation process every month. Automakers are unhappy about it as it reveals pictures and specs of the cars they haven’t yet launched. But we don’t mind.

Xiaomi SU7 is an electric sedan with dimensions 4997/1963/1455 mm and a wheelbase of 3000 mm. It will have two wheel options, 19″ and 20″; tire specifications are 245/45 R19 and 245/40 R20, respectively. Xiaomi showed two versions – with lidar and without. Lidar is installed behind the front windshield.

We see a camera on the B pillar from the pictures, so we suspect the Xiaomi SU7 will come with a face recognition unlocking function.

The powertrain has two options: the RWD with 220 kW motor and AWD with 495 kW maximum power (220 kW + 275 kW). The LFP battery pack comes from BYD for cheaper trim and ternary NMC from CATL for a more expensive option.

The curb weight is 1,980 kg, and the top speed is limited to 210 km/h for the lower trim. The curb weight for the top trim model is 2,205 kg, and the top speed is 265 km/h.

According to MIIT filling, there are three versions: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. Some trims will feature an active rear wing.

The electric motor model is TZ220XS000, made by United Automotive Electronics Co., Ltd. It will also come with an ETC function, a system that allows drivers to automatically pay tolls on toll roads without stopping the car.

SU7’s in-car system will be powered by Xiaomi’s HyperOS, an in-house developed operation system that can power both smartphones and cars.

The electric 4-door 5-seater SU7 will start mass production in December 2023, and deliveries will begin in February 2024.

The BAIC Off-road Vehicle Co. factory in Beijing has already started trial production of SU7, and dozens of test vehicles rolled off the line. Interestingly, BAIC also produces Mercedes-Benz cars in China under the joint venture Beijing-Benz, which was established in 2005 and where BAIC owns 51%. BAIC is also a shareholder in Mercedes-Benz itself, holding a 10% stake in the German legacy maker.

A car from Xiaomi, is not appealing in my opinion as diversification from their core field to such an extent requires a lot of efforts to ensure that the results are positive, however it will be known only when the product is launched. The example for the same is Ola which is also facing difficulty in making the product much more reliable and trustworthy.

The electric 4-door 5-seater SU7 will start mass production in December 2023, and deliveries will begin in February 2024.
However, there are bleak chances of launching this one in India due to the necessary regulations pressed on Chinese companies by Indian Government after the Galwan Valley Attack as well as for privacy concerns.

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV), the SU7, and announced ambitious plans to become one of the world’s top five automakers. The sedan, which stands for Speed Ultra, is expected to hit the market in a few months. The figures revealed by the company shows that the new electric car could go neck-to-neck with Teslas when the launch happens.

The Xiaomi SU7 has been introduced in two variants: SU7 and SU7 Max. The SU7 is a rear-wheel drive where as the SU7 Max is an all-wheel-drive version.

Here are the specifications of the standard SU7:

Acceleration: 0-100 kmph in 5.28 seconds
Claimed range: 668 km
Top Speed: 210 kmph
Power: 299 PS
Torque: 400Nm

Xiaomi SU7 Max Specifications:

Acceleration: 0-100 kmph in 2.78 seconds
Claimed range: 800 km
Top Speed: 265 kmph
Power: 673 PS
Torque: 838Nm

Despite a slowing demand and capacity glut in China’s auto market, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, is optimistic. He stated at the unveiling, “By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry.”

The SU7 is expected to appeal to customers due to its shared operating system with Xiaomi’s popular phones and other electronic devices. This integration allows drivers to have seamless access to the company’s existing portfolio of mobile apps.

According to a report by Reuters, the company’s stock fell by 0.3% following the announcement. Xiaomi, China’s fifth-largest smartphone maker, has been seeking to diversify beyond its core business to EVs amid stagnating demand for smartphones. Xiaomi has pledged to invest $10 billion in autos over a decade and is one of the few new players in China’s EV market to gain approval from authorities.

Highlights of the Xiaomi SU7 and SU7 Max:

  • The SU7 is touted as having “super electric motor” technology capable of delivering acceleration speeds faster than Tesla cars and Porsche’s EVs
  • The car will come in two versions, one with a driving range of up to 668 km (415 miles) on a single charge and another Max variant with a range of up to 800 km. By comparison, Tesla’s Model S has a range of up to 650 km
  • The SU7 has fast-charging capabilities in low temperatures and is equipped with advanced tech allowing it to recognize obstacles under challenging conditions such as falling snow
  • The autonomous driving capabilities of Xiaomi cars would be at the forefront of the industry
  • The cars will be produced by a unit of state-owned automaker BAIC Group in a Beijing factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.
