i was watching "agent vinod" movie yesterday. i think in monacco fiat uno & logan are extensively used as taxis. why didnt it capture the indica market

uno launched in 96 has been the only diesel car in its price range. indica was launched two years late in 98. indica has been able to capture the taxi market, but why didnt uno do.

uno has been launched in all variants turbo, non-turbo, ps, non-ps like wise indica. why didnt it capture the indian taxi market???

For a car to enter taxi segment, foremost criterion is a widespread service and spares availability and trustworthy brand. Sadly Fiat didn’t score well on either of the aspects. Uno otherwise was a nice car.

The UNO diesel had a brilliant engine and handling-have travelled in the same and thoroughly enjoyed it-however spares were vv expensive .I think the service was being done at TVS (if my memory is correct)-some owners were not too happy with the time that took

Re: Why Fiat Uno Could Not Capture Taxi Market?

The main reason behind that is the BRAND NAME WHICH IS FIAT
people have trust in the brand. if i remember correctly it has the record for highest no of bookings at launch. some 2.18 lakh bookings (please correct the figure if its wrong).

taxi owners espicially kolkata will still remember the fiat premier padmini, when padmini did well why cant the uno. at the time when there are no alternatives

toyota too didnt have ass at the time of launching of qualis, but it did well. toyota is spreading the network in the recent years to the tier 2,3 cities

This is completely wrong statement from you .do you have any idea how many fiat UNO bookings were done when they had announced the car ? The problem was not with car but basically fiats jv partner premeir auto that time which had strikes at their production plant and which could not fulfill any demand infact the demand was becuase it was a fiat car and not other wise which you are saying here without any research .
On top of it premeir auto dint even return deposits of people who had booked the car till date . fiats name in India is spoiled mainly because of this ugly consumer dealings from premeir auto with which unfortunately they were associated at that time .

A sincere request to you please don't post anything on a subject which you have not researched anything beforehand because it simply dosent add any value .

ask questions if you want to know instead .

what about now ?
Now you don't see UNO because simple the car is not getting produced in India for many many years .btw do you see tata estate ,sierra or standard 2000 ? The reason is same. Rocket science ?

Re: Why Fiat Uno Could Not Capture Taxi Market?

For a car to make a hit in normal taxi segment , the spares should be readily available off the shelf.

esp in spare shop.

advantages ,
original spare at spare shop , slightly less than mrp , plus local garage , low labour rate , plus tax free bills.

that is reason indica and indigo are selling well.

YPu may wonder why not swift then?
its spares are available like a tata through mgp

swift has less space at rear.
and rear seat comfort is better in indica than a swift. swift rear is bumpy.

if swift is not popular in taxi segment , forget the uno or present day polo.

a taxi operator wont invest much in a diminishing value asset.
a 2010 model indica will be sold at higher rate than a 2010 polo , and polo is costlier from the beginning.

Premium taxi are using corolla , fiesta in the fleet. premium taxi will not have a hatch in their fleet

we in India have adjusted & witnessed premier padmini as taxis, why not the uno.

i dont think thats the case with innova - a sucessful 8 seater taxi.

that is reason indica and indigo are selling well.
im talking about years before the launch of indica and indigo.

Actually it's the herd mentality of people in India, that keeps them away from anything but Maruti.

Uno was the perfect car for a Taxi because:
1. Boot space was huge (almost like a sedan)
2. Rear seat could take 3 persons in comfort and not cramped like a swift.
3. Other than the regular service (every 7500 Kms), it was maintenance free.
4. Engine could easily do 3 lakh kms without any work.

however spares were vv expensive .
Who told you that? Even then you hardly ever needed to replace parts like in Marutis.

Come to Goa. You'll see quite a few Swift Taxis. Infact the Swift Taxis are more than the Indica's.

The cost and availability of spares could be the one main reason why fleet owner's stayed away from it

Uno didn't do well even in private sector. Zens was introduced & uno was history. It was only santro which killed zen.
And indica did well as it was India's first indigenous car, so there was some craze about it, not to forget the space which it offered.
BTW, does anyone remember the long form for Unos FIRE engine ?[confused]
