A Volkswagen official has apparently confirmed reports that the German auto giant is not going to enter formula one. The news follows Tuesday's report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that said VW chairman Ferdinand Piech had decided against approving a F1 foray with Audi or Porsche branding. The DPA news agency cites an official at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters as responding: "There are no concrete plans (for F1)." (source)

Volkswagen Considering Supplying Sauber with Engines in 2015

Volkswagen is contemplating supplying Sauber with Formula 1 engines beginning in 2015. Formula 1 changes to 1.6-liter V6 turbos in 2014.

The speculation is that VW wants to take a step into Formula 1, possibly with a full team. However, it will test the waters first by supplying engines.

The rumor speculates on a very clever plan from VW, which is that VW and Sauber will develop the car at Porsche's develop center in Weissach. Porsche is designing its new sports prototype for the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the center but would help with the development of the F1 engine. The FIA is also reportedly backing VW entering the sport.

It would be the first time that VW has ever competed in Formula 1. However several of its brands have F1 history. Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Porsche all have competed or supplied engines. Audi raced grand prix cars before Formula 1 as Auto Union.

Porsche raced several chassis officially in 1961 and 1962. It supplied engines to McLaren from 1983 to 1987 and won the championship in 84 and 85.
