Volkswagen is preparing an update for its Tiguan SUV and the refreshed model is slated to launch in the U.S. sometime in 2021 for the 2022 model year. A teaser photo previews its freshened front-end styling, and VW also says the 2022 Tiguan will have a new infotainment system and additional tech features. We don't expect significant mechanical changes, although the company did say that it's considering some sort of more powerful engine option for our market.

Visually, reshaped LED headlights and taillights will be standard, and we expect new wheel designs and some reworked body panels as well. The grille looks slimmer and more shapely, with VW's new logo design prominently displayed in the center. Inside, the Tiguan will benefit from a redesigned steering wheel and the company's newer MIB3 infotainment system that should bring crisper graphics and increased connectivity options.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan X coupe SUV revealed in pre-release images

Images of a new variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan have surfaced online, revealing a third body style option to join the range in Volkswagen’s Chinese line-up.

The new Tiguan X shows off a sleeker coupe-SUV profile to slot in alongside the more practical five-seat Tiguan and seven-seat Tiguan Allspace models.

Joining the range as part of the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture range, the Tiguan X will be the third ‘X model’ to join the range between the smaller Tayron X and larger Teramont X (which also sells in North America as the Atlas Cross Sport), both fastback versions of their respective nameplates.

While the regular Tiguan runs a defined two-box body with an upright and angular glasshouse, the Tiguan X features a lower roofline, more shallow-angled windscreen and a single arc for the upper window line that flows front to rear.
