Volkswagen ID.Buzz.jpg

Following spy shots that emerged of the new Volkswagen ID.Buzz van testing the firm has revealed a new teaser image of the electric ID.Buzz people carrier. Published by VW brand chief executive office Ralf Brandstatter, the retro-themed model will go on sale next year in people carrier and van form as a rival to the Mercedes EQV.

3vwidbuzz.jpg

Volkswagen’s aim for the project is to revive the iconic, multipurpose Type 2 campervan of the 1950s but with a modern EV twist – and this teaser image shows how the new ID.Buzz will adopt some of its great grandfather’s styling cues.
7vwidbuzz.jpg

The deep swept-back windscreen and smooth surfacing are reminiscent of the old Type 2, as is the placement of the badge on the vehicle’s nose. We’re also expecting the production model will be available with a two-tone paint scheme cut along the van’s waistline, as an homage to the 1950s original.

9vwidbuzz.jpg

Volkswagen’s designers have also drawn inspiration from the styling language used on the rest of the ID. line-up. Familiar cues such as the van’s slim LED headlights, perforated front bumper and LED daytime running light strip across the machine’s nose all feature.

10vwidbuzz.jpg

The panel van variant will be called the ID.Buzz Cargo and our spy photographers have already spotted prototypes of the new van undergoing development.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz: platform and powertrain

Like the rest of Volkswagen’s ID-badged electric vehicles, the ID.Buzz will be based on the MEB platform. Buyers will have a choice of either panel van or three-row passenger van variants, both of which will be available with batteries ranging in size from 48kWh to 111kWh. The larger unit will offer a maximum range of around 340 miles.

12vwidbuzz.jpg

The van’s powertrain options will be the same as those found in the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV, with a 201bhp single-motor, rear-wheel-drive option sitting at the lower end of the line-up. However, a four wheel-drive, dual-motor model is also expected, producing a punchy 295bhp.

13vwidbuzz.jpg

Like the rest of Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicles, the ID.Buzz should also offer support for 135kW DC fast charging, which means 77kWh battery can be topped up from 0-80 per cent in 26 minutes.

14vwidbuzz.jpg

Speaking at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen’s then-design boss Oliver Stefani told Auto Express: “We would like to bring [the Microbus] back because it fits so well to what the brand stands for: it’s emotional, it has functionality, it makes your life easier.

15vwidbuzz.jpg

“With the MEB platform this is the chance now to get the proportions back,” he added, referring to the fact that you don’t need to have an engine in the front with an EV. “But you can also get much more interior space, almost one class higher.”

Volkswagen ID.Buzz: autonomous taxi prototypes and MOIA

Volkswagen isn’t just aiming the ID.Buzz at the private sector. In September 2021, the brand unveiled an autonomous prototype version of the van at the Munich Motor Show, and announced that it will soon enter service in Germany as part of its new ride hailing business.

See the VW ID.Buzz's Interior in first Official photos

db2022au00153-large-1646671800.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.752xh;0,0.jpg

The long-awaited debut of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric van is just around the corner, and VW has released a few photos of the interior to whet our appetite for the full reveal. This isn't exactly the EV Microbus that we'll be getting in the U.S., as the Europe-market version will be shown first and will differ somewhat from ours, which will be a longer-wheelbase version with three rows of seats. The model pictured here appears to have just two rows of seats with space for five passengers, and there will also be cargo versions sold in Europe for commercial buyers that we won't get in the States. Finished in an orange-and-white color scheme, the interior looks fresh and fun and piques our curiosity for the various trim and upholstery customization possibilities that VW will offer. And a cheeky retro design like this wouldn't be complete without a few Easter eggs that VW has detailed; the company also claims that the van will offer a built-in bottle opener and ice scraper. We'll learn more about these features soon, as the Buzz will debut this Wednesday, March 9.

This attractive combination of orange cloth and white leather upholstery looks good, and there's contrasting orange stitching on the seats too. An "ID." logo is emblazoned on the front seats to denote this van as part of VW's electric lineup that also includes the ID.4 crossover.

db2022au00155-large-1646671802.jpg

This silhouette is inscribed in the black plastic found on the side of the rear seat housing; we spotted it within the larger interior photo.

db2022au00169-large-1646671802.jpg

A similar silhouette is found on this textured yellow plastic piece, but its location is uncertain.

db2022au00168-large-1646671802.jpg

This cute winking smiley face is on the inside of the door handle. VW says it wants these fun touches to only be discovered "at second glance."

New Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo: retro electric van revealed

cargo1.jpg

Volkswagen's recent history of electric vans is patchy at best, but the VW ID. Buzz Cargo aims to change that. It's the first commercial vehicle to be based on the brand's MEB electric vehicle platform, and its bespoke running gear should help it to achieve class-leading range and economy figures.

cargo6.jpg
That range figure has yet to be confirmed, but with a 77kWh battery and a dedicated electric platform, it should be able to outperform the Stellantis group's range of electric vans (Citroen e-Dispatch, Vauxhall Vivaro-e, etc). Those vans manage around 205 miles on a charge, and with the VW ID.3 hatchback offering up to 330 miles from its 77kWh battery, a range of around 250 miles is possible for the commercial vehicles newcomer.

cargo2.jpg

In terms of size, the ID. Buzz Cargo slots into VW's commercial vehicle range between the Caddy Cargo and T6 Transporter. It's 4,712mm long, 1,985mm wide and 1,938mm tall, and there's 3.9 cubic metres of space in the cargo area. That's nearly a cubic metre more than in a Caddy Cargo, and VW says is big enough for two Euro pallets to fit inside.

cargo3.jpg

The load area is accessed via either a top-hinged tailgate or barn-style doors at the rear, or there are single or twin sliding side doors. The tailgate has a window, and the bulkhead can be had with a window, as well as the option of through loading under the passenger seats. There's a maximum payload weight of 650kg and the load sill is 632mm high, while VW will offer a longer wheelbase ID. Buzz Cargo at a later date.

cargo4.jpg

Up front, there will be the option of two or three-seat cab layouts, while features include a 5.4-inch digital cockpit display for the driver and a 10-inch infotainment screen. This will be available with online connectivity and wireless smartphone compatibility, too. Cabin storage includes an optional 'Buzz Box' with a five-litre storage drawer and a top cubby featuring an ice scraper and bottle opener. This locks into place between the front seats on two-seat models, and can be removed when necessary.

cargo5.jpg

Power for the ID. Buzz Cargo comes from a 201bhp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. There's also 310Nm of torque from a standstill, so acceleration should be swift, and since the front wheels are free to steer, VW has created a tight turning circle of 11.1 metres for the newcomer.

cargo7.jpg

It's the van's exterior styling that is one of the big talking points, though. The smooth shape is inspired by VW's Type 2 or 'Bulli' as it's known, and the smooth front end and slender headlights are a styling touch that's similar to other ID models. The van's aerodynamics have been honed to boost efficiency, with a figure of 0.29Cd quoted by VW.

cargo8.jpg

The van revealed at launch features a two-tone white-over-blue colour scheme, which will be offered as an option on the ID. Buzz Cargo, with yellow, orange and green also being offered.

cargo9.jpg

Prices for the ID. Buzz Cargo haven't been announced, but those along with final range and efficiency figures should be revealed closer to its on-sale date later this year. Expect to see the ID. Buzz Cargo hit VW Commercial Vehicle centres in the autumn.

New sporty Volkswagen ID.Buzz GTX on the way

Volkswagen ID Buzz-13.jpg

Volkswagen has revealed it is planning on bringing its sporty GTX moniker to all of its all-electric ID cars - including the new ID.Buzz, which will line-up as a unique proposition: a hot, all-electric minibus.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-16.jpg
The battery size likely won’t change from the other trim levels so we’ll see the same 77kWh battery in the ID.Buzz GTX. In the ID.5 GTX, that battery is linked to a 295bhp and 460Nm electric motor setup. Given the ID.Buzz uses a the same MEB platform to the ID.5, we expect to see similar numbers in Volkswagen’s hot electric MPV.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-14.jpg

The ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX utilise two electric motors (one on each axle) to provide four-wheel drive so we expect the same in the ID.Buzz GTX. Just like the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX models, range will likely decrease with the battery focusing more on performance.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-17.jpg

Elsewhere, the exterior will probably feature a few small nods to the added sportiness and the interior should have some red touches - as seen on previous GTX models.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-18.jpg

While order books haven't quite opened for the new Volkswagen ID.Buzz, customers can expect to pay from £57,115 to get their hands on VW’s funky electric minivan when sales begin in July.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-12.jpg

Volkswagen has confirmed that the new ID.Buzz range will start with the entry-level Life model, from that £57,115 price tag. But up a level will be the £61,915 mid-range Style model and then the £62,995 1st Edition. The GTX will sit at the top of the range but pricing has not yet been revealed for it.

Volkswagen ID Buzz-3.jpg

Customers will have to place a deposit of £2,000 by 30 June to secure a priority slot for the five-seat ID.Buzz, with pre-orders not available on the Cargo commercial van variant just yet.

For now, every model in the ID.Buzz range features the same running gear as the ID.3. That means a 77kWh battery, sending 201bhp and 310Nm of torque to the rear wheels. This should change with the inclusion of the hot GTX model, as we expect more power and four-wheel drive. Volkswagen claims the ID.Buzz is capable of an all-electric range of up to 258 miles.

There's 170kW charging on board, so the battery can be charged from five to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes from a powerful enough DC source. What's more, the ID. Buzz will come with bi-directional charging as standard, so not only will you be able to charge the car at home, you'll also be able to feed energy from the battery back into the grid.

The production version of the ID. Buzz remains largely unchanged from the concepts that we've seen since 2017. It's a fairly standard one-box minivan shape with a rakish windscreen, while VW claims a drag coefficient of 0.29Cd to help boost efficiency.

There are slender LED headlights on the range-topping 1st Edition variant up front with a light bar stretching between them to connect with the large VW badge in the middle, while lower down is a mesh grille design for the lower air intakes. Sliding side doors feature, while the rearmost pillars use a three-bar design motif.

New Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX teaser released

Volkswagen ID.Buzz GTX teaser.jpg

Volkswagen’s GTX moniker is applied to its performance EVs and this new teaser image shows the firm is working on the new ID. Buzz GTX - an all-electric MPV with more power and added focus on driving fun.

A close-up image of the ID. Buzz GTX steering wheel was revealed during a VW investor presentation, and we can clearly see it’s the same wheel already used on the firm’s two other MEB platform GTX products: the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX debuts as Sporty Electric Van with 335 HP

vw-id.-buzz-gtx-2024.jpg

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. Buzz GTX, which is effectively the GTI version of its electric Bulli minivan. As expected, the GTX version produces 335 horsepower, applied to the road through an electric motor on the front axle and another on the rear axle to form an electric 4Motion AWD system. This enables an estimated 0-62 mph sprint time of roughly 6.5 seconds. That's not quick compared to a Golf GTI, but the Golf can't haul as much stuff or carry as many people in such comfort.

vw-id.-buzz-gtx-2024 (1).jpg

Two versions of this GTX trim will be offered. The standard wheelbase version gets a new 79 kWh (usable; 84 kWh gross) battery, while the extended wheelbase model also gets a new 91 kWh pack, of which 86 kWh are usable. Up to 416 kilometers (258 miles) of range may be possible on the WLTP cycle. Either model can be charged from 10-80% in "less than half an hour." Both versions have a top speed of 99 mph.

A GTX-specific front bumper appears with a black honeycomb grille that hides air curtains, while the extremities of the front fascia get triangular LED lights. Moving backward, the wing mirrors are painted in gloss black, a finish that reappears on the optional 21-inch Caracas wheels seen here. Also available are Townsville wheels that are black with a diamond-cut face, but we'd probably stick with the standard 19-inch Venlo alloys.

Very little else has changed from a cosmetic point of view (besides that the ID. Buzz badges are replaced with black GTX badges), which just goes to show how much of an impact the two-tone finish of the regular ID. Buzz can have. That said, VW didn't skimp on the paint, and if you want to pair this new Cherry Red paint (exclusive to the ID. Buzz GTX) with a two-tone Mono Silver metallic finish, go ahead. Also available are six other solid options and four other two-tone finishes.

Automakers can't afford to overextend themselves, and that is especially true of electric vehicles. Thus, VW hasn't rewritten the design rulebook but kept things simple inside, with the GTX getting simple but effect model-specific changes that include a unique seat design and a black headliner. The seats themselves are covered in black ArtVelours Eco microfleece with a new diamond pattern, contrasted by red stitching and piping. Red cross-stitching appears on the steering wheel, too, which gets red center trim and subtle GTX badging.

The standard wheelbase model is a five-seat vehicle with a three-seat 60:40 folding bench in the second row, but you can have it as a six-seater with two individual seats in the second row and another two in the third. The long-wheelbase variant has access to the same options but can also be had a seven-seater with a second-row bench and two individual seats in the third row.

The long-wheelbase model will be available with a dimmable panoramic sunroof, the largest ever fitted to a VW.

Like the facelifted Golf GTI, the ID. Buzz GTX will appear with ChatGPT AI functionality. There will also be a standard 12.9-inch touchscreen (up fro
m 12.0) and an illuminated touch bar for temperature and volume control. We still prefer physical switches. An optional head-up display will also be offered.

When it comes to towing, the regular model can manage just over 3,968 pounds, while the long-wheelbase model manages roughly 3,527 lbs.

The usual safety features are joined by a remote parking function called Park Assist Plus, which includes a memory function ideal for parking your vehicle in a regularly used spot, such as the office or at home. This can also be used in reverse, extricating the vehicle remotely.
