The upcoming Volkswagen Aero B has been spied testing once again, giving us our best look yet at the new Tesla Model 3 rival.

It appears the new all-electric saloon will retain a similar design language to VW’s current crop of ID range. At the front the nose is short and low for better aerodynamics and the lower grille and headlight design is reminiscent of the ID.4’s. The grille is still camouflaged and it’s likely to be much smaller than the one on this test vehicle for better a drag coefficient.

There’s a strong crease running along the side of the Aero B, just like the one seen on the new ID.5 SUV. The rear is still disguised but we can expect a similar design to the rest of VW’s all-electric range.

Internally codenamed ‘Aero B’, the model will rival cars such as the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 when it is released to the market in 2023.

The Aero B was first shown as a concept, dubbed the ID. Vizzion, at the 2018 Geneva motor show. We expect the finished car’s name will stick with the traditional ID naming convention. In 2018, Volkswagen bosses promised that the finished car would be capable of 600km (327 miles) on a single charge, but with the updated MEB platform imminent the new Aero B could shatter that estimation.

In a presentation at the UBS Paris Electric Car Day, VW revealed ‘enhancements’ for the MEB platform, which could debut on the Aero B.

The battery and motor system will be capable of delivering 435 miles on a single charge, while the maximum recharge rate of the system will be upped from 150kW to 200kW. Given the larger base of the Aero B, VW should be able to incorporate its biggest batteries without much trouble.

Performance should be increased too with the potential for a hot four-wheel drive GTX-branded version to offer a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds. The current ID.4 GTX SUV puts out 295bhp and 310Nm of torque so the hot Aero B could better that still.

Eventually, Volkswagen will launch an estate version of the Aero B, too, as previewed by the ID. Space Vizzion concept from the 2019 LA Motor Show. The concept was also fitted with a dual-motor electric powertrain, which produces a more potent 335bhp. It remains to be seen whether this powertrain will make it into production, though.

Inside, we expect the Aero B will share the same compact digital dashboard and 10-inch infotainment system as the rest of Volkswagen’s MEB models with the potential for the larger 12-inch screen on top models.

Volkswagen ID. Aero sedan concept teased before June 27 debut

FireShot Capture 015 - Volkswagen ID. Aero Sedan Concept Teased Before June 27 Debut_ - www.mo...png
We've known for quite a while that Volkswagen is launching a full-electric four-door sedan. Initially called the Aero B through various teasers and spy shots, the concept version was supposed to be shown in full in China in April but was postponed due to the pandemic.

This time, it's official and Volkswagen has revealed its production name – the ID. Aero. It will be initially shown in concept form this month. More importantly, the German marque shared a teaser of the design study (see above), which will eventually evolve into a production vehicle sooner or later.

As VW's first fully-electric sedan, the ID. Aero Concept's teaser showcases a flowy form, almost sporting a fastback look. There are minimal lines and creases, plus the tailgate-wide LED graphic surely warrants some attention. Volkswagen describes the ID. Aero as having "outstanding aerodynamics, elegant design, and generous space."

Remember that the teaser was just a concept, though. The production version slightly differs as seen in the bevy of Aero B spy shots we've encountered so far, albeit, cleverly camouflaged to hide the important details. Of note, the fastback form and lines reflect those that we see in the recently released teaser.

The VW ID. Aero sedan is based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), seen to expand Wolfsburg's electric vehicle lineup in the high-volume upper-middle-class segment. Technical details aren't available just yet, though we must note that the previous announcement saw the Aero B Concept boasting 435 miles (700 kilometers) of range.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID. Aero Concept will be revealed in full on June 27, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. ET. The production version will be initially sold in China in the second half of 2023.

Meanwhile, the North American and European versions of the ID. Aero will debut in 2023 with no specific timeline just yet. It will be produced in Volkswagen's plant in Emden.

New Volkswagen ID. Aero nears production as latest concept is revealed

Volkswagen Aero ID 2022.jpg

Volkswagen is firmly setting its sights on the likes of the Tesla and Polestar with its new ID. Aero and as these latest images show it’ll retain plenty from the ID. Vizzion concept.

Volkswagen Aero ID 2022-3.jpg
The ID. Vizzion concept was first shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, featuring design traits that have now become a staple of VW’s all-electric ID range. We’ve spied the new ID. Aero testing before and this production concept model shows that not much will change for the final iteration.

Volkswagen Aero ID 2022-5.jpg

The ID. Aero is the sixth member of the ID range (including the ID.6, which isn’t sold in the UK) and as expected, it will adopt a similar face to the rest of VW’s all-electric models. The low nose helps aerodynamic efficiency and the headlight arrangement, coupled with the light bar split by the VW badge, is reminiscent of the ID. Buzz and ID.4. The side air intakes below the headlights incorporate three individual fog lights and the uplift on the lower part of the bumper gives the ID. Aero some aggression. The thin grille, flush-fitting door handles and other aerodynamic features help lower the drag coefficient to 0.23.

The curved roof is joined by a new chrome strip running from the A-pillar to the D-pillar, accentuating the car’s shape. A shoulder-line crease also runs the length of the body, something that’s become a trademark design cue of the German firm’s electric models. The diamond-cut 22-inch wheels are a new design, too.

At the back there’s a full-width light bar with some intricate rear LED clusters, the light-up VW badge on the bootlid isn’t likely to make production in the UK. A small diffuser also mimics the one seen on the prototype ID Aero.

Volkswagen has previously promised that the production saloon would be capable of 600km (327 miles) on a single charge, but since then ‘enhancements’ for the MEB platform have been revealed, which will underpin the new ID. Aero.

“With the ID. Aero show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometres, an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior,” says Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen.

At almost 5 metres in length, the ID. Aero is much longer than either the Tesla Model 3 or Polestar 2 - it’s actually not far off the Model S. This extra space means a new 77kWh battery and motor system is easily integrated, helping deliver a maximum range figure of 385 miles. Recharging will be raised from 150kW to 200kW with the new MEB architecture, so a 10-80 per cent top-up should take less than half an hour.

Performance should be increased too, with the potential for a hot four-wheel-drive GTX version offering a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds. The current ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX SUVs put out 295bhp and 310Nm of torque, and this is the set-up most likely to appear in a GTX variant of the ID. Aero.
