Govt plans to impose additional levies on diesel cars

The finance ministry is exploring plans to impose additional levies on cigarettes and diesel cars, measures that some officials think could help it earn much needed revenues without stoking inflation or hurting growth.

Reluctant to hike diesel price

There exists a waiting period of 2-3 months on most diesel models because of the steady rise in petrol prices. The government has been reluctant to increase prices of diesel for fear of stoking inflation. The finance ministry reasons that since the government is not able to raise diesel prices, it is justified in levying more tax on diesel cars. Officials say raising levies on these items could be politically expedient and administratively simple.

Imposition of duties on these products would also not the hurt common man, a crucial consideration for the government ahead of major assembly elections next year. Duties on diesel cars can be increased though a simple notification although to do the same on cigarettes, it will need to issue an ordinance. The government earns about Rs 8,000 crore from duty on diesel cars each year.

At present the duty on cars is based on the length and not the fuel. Small cars attract an excise duty of 10%, while cars with engine capacity more than 1500 cc attract 22% duty. An expert panel headed by former Planning Commission member Kirit Parikh last year recommended imposition of additional excise duty on diesel vehicles of up to Rs 80,000.

In most likely circumstances the increase in duty will be for new cars. Old car owners will not have to pay additional expenses. But then you never know the govt!

Govt planning - Rs 80,000 tax on diesel cars

Government is planning for additional tax on diesel cars of Rs 80,000.

Diesel cars are already about Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 100,000 more expensive than their petrol counterparts even in the small car segments.

The petrol ministry in its report has argued that the additional duty will help part fund the losses borne by state owned oil companies. Apparently oil companies suffer a loss of Rs. 11.0 + on every liter of diesel they sell. The report also suggests that the step would help reversing the recent trend where diesel cars are selling in much higher numbers than their petrol counterparts.

Government may introduce Rs 80,000 additional tax on diesel cars

It should be depends on Ex-showroom prices. 23 lakh fortuner owner pay same tax as 5 lakh indica/beat/figo.[thumbsdown]. Most affected segment would be hatchback. Interesting to see second hand diesel car prices.

Holy cow [frustration].You are right Jazzselect. What is the point if they collect the same amount for all diesel cars. Is it applicable only for cars or all the vehicles running on diesel ? I think it's not that much easy to implement this. Let's wait and see.

Re: Government Raises Tax Upto 25% For Diesel Cars

I feel the tax being levied on all Diesel cars across the segment will be detrimental, I don't share the enthusiasm everyone shares here with regards to hike in tax for Diesel cars. Most of the middle class runs on a tight budget, if there is any increase in tax their budgets will go for a toss & the Govt. here is bent on depriving the middle class of its necessity. Thinking that everyone has money filled up in their banks & elsewhere is sheer stupidity.

This is NOT the way to reduce cars on the roads, if the Govt. wants money then tax those who spend above 10lacs to buy a diesel car which is a gas guzzler. anything above 10lacs ex. showroom must be taxed more & that way revenue can be generated as no. of people who buy such cars are a plenty. My 2 cents

It is not prudent to raise the taxes on all the diesel vehicles because commercial cars also run on diesel. General rise in tax will lead to increase in commodity prices.

Re: Government Raises Tax Upto 25% For Diesel Cars

Some people informed me that only SUVs/MUVs will be taxed & not cars which is fuel efficient. Also, taxing on cars like hatches will be big mess.

Maruti is is investing some 250 Cr+ in diesel plant & so are other manufactures, including Tata, M & M etc.

Btw, more than 75% of swift sold by maruti are in diesel.

Re: Delhi Govt. Increases Tax Upto 25% For Diesel Cars

I mean, that all states and union territories should slap an additional 25%tax on Diesel cars without delay. Why should the Diesel car owner get a less taxed fuel, when the Petrol car owner does not?
This 25% tax is on all diesel cars, meaning the most fuel efficient Swifts and Indicas will be taxed on par with Fortuners and Santa FEs. The worst hit in this case would be the C2 segment cars, where buyers may move to C1 or possibly B2/B1 segment.
The intention must be to discourage the use of guzzling SUVs bought for personal uses, straight away.

Re: Government Raises Tax Upto 25% For Diesel Cars

According to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) that the total fuel used in cars in India over 40% is diesel. And now more diesel SUV are selling more.

There are 24 diesel car models in the engine size class range of less than 1,400 cc; 42 models in the range 1,401-2,000 cc; and 61 models in the class above 2,000 cc engines. This shows how more models are proliferating in the big car and SUV segments.
