TVS Motor coulod have a 220cc Apache during 2010 Read more: TVS Motor coulod have a

Cut and Paste from the net, seen today.

It seems one of the largest two-wheeler markets will see an avalanche of launches in the premium bike segment. Last year, India’s leading bikemaker rolled out a fuel injected variant of its 223cc bike (Karizma), which is christened as Karizma ZMR. Its sister company, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is gearing up to introduce a 250cc bike, Pune-based Bajaj auto recently soft-launched the naked version of its 220cc Pulsar.

Of late, speculation is pretty rife that Chennai-based TVS Motor Company has a great product to launch from its Apache RTR racing series that will sport a powerful 220cc engine for the Indian bike enthusiastic. It is to be mentioned that TVS Apache is currently available in four variants: Apache 150, Apache RTR FI 160, Apache RTR 160 and Apache 180. In each model, RTR stands for ‘Racing Throttle Response’. Currently more than 250,000 Apaches are on road.

It is believed that the 220cc Apache will arrive with necessary modifications to take up the rivals. The bike will go in for production in February and its engine will churn out 22bhp power and will be available at a price tag of Rs. 95.000. There will be changes in form of size (bigger) and sturdy (stronger) than the current 180 version.”

However, when a senior official of the company was contacted, he declined to confirm or deny it. He said, “Although we are open to enhance our portfolio in the premium and executive segments, we cannot confirm or deny this story. As far as the 220cc bike is concerned, , we will look into the high-powered bike segment of above 200 cc category if there is a market potential. It could be either a sports bike or a bike with racing DNA. At this point of time TVS has not made any firm decision on this aspect.”

It may be recalled that on the sidelines of launching its King ZS 4 stroke CNG autorickshaw for New Delhi, TVS Motor Company has indicated that it also intends venturing into the 200+ cc segments in the bikes market to increase its footprint in the two-wheeler segment.

“If demand increased, the company would look into the high-powered bike segment of the above-200-cc category, said TVS Motor Company’s president-Marketing, H.S. Goindi said more than a couple of months back. He added, "Though it's a small volumes segment, we will definitely be in it. However, the volumes will come from the 100-110cc segment only." When queried whether it would be looking at tying up with any international auto giant, the company hinted that it might also resort to such a strategy. "We are open to international tie-ups," Goindi said. The firm has not decided whether the 200-cc bike would be a racing model or will be branded as Apache, like the existing bikes in the above-150-cc category, he added. He also maintained that it has not been firmed up whether the proposed premium segment bike will branded as ‘Apache’, like the existing bikes in the above-150cc category.

Maybe TVS has decided to be tight lipped until something serious develops!! But if they do come up with something special beware HH and Bajaj!! I already feel the Pulsar was losing to the Apache and that is why they recently face lifted the Pulsar and also added the 135LS to keep up the pace!!

While I am sure every competitor is a point of worry, Bajaj sells over 2 lac bikes a month, and a high percentage of that is from the Pulsar range, TVS does around 1 lac, and they are mostly non Apaches.
Dilli Door Hai!!
But the availability of options will keep the manufacturers on their toes, and it is nice to know that we will never again have to face a situation of when the M800 was the only thing you could get, and the dealers (and the manufacturers) were like - Yehi hai, lena hai to le lo, nahin to ....
