Toyota Kirloskar Motor to supply Etios components to Brazil production

The Japanese automobile major Toyota’s Indian subsidiary Toyota Kirlsokar Motor (TKM) has put in a place a strategy to use its Indian operations as a base for its other developing markets. According to a report in The Business Line, the company’s Indian subsidiary will supply transmissions and other small components to the Brazilian operations. Toyota has planned a product from the same platform for Thailand’s Eco Car project. Plans are underway for a compact car in Indonesia which may be jointly executed with subsidiary, Daihatsu. When these plans materialise, India could play a big role in both projects.
According to the report, Hiroshi Nakagawa, MD, Toyota Kirlsokar Motors believes India has the potential to emerge a global powerhouse for Toyota’s EFC (entry family car) strategy. It was mentioned that the Etios is part of this plan, where India was the launch pad for the car. He was quoted as saying “We have been supporting Brazil, where India plays the role of the ‘elder brother’. Many practices in this plant are shared with Brazil, which will also produce the Etios.” This is in line with the Japanese automaker’s way of working, where knowledge and best practices are shared and passed on within the fold.

The report stated that the Toyota chief was head of the IMV (innovative international multipurpose vehicle) programme in Thailand over a decade ago. His goal then was to make the country the hub for all vehicles produced on this platform. Today, the same vision could work out in the EFC strategy, where India and Brazil are the prime movers, it was mentioned in the report.

The price of the Etios hatchback ranges from R$ 29,990 (Rs. 7.96 lakhs) to R$ 42,709 (Rs. 11.36 lakh). The sedan has a price range of R$ 36,190 (Rs. 9.61 lakhs) to R$ 44,690 (Rs. 11.87 lakhs). The vehicles are manufactured in Brazil, at the Sorocaba plant.

Toyota Etios gets 4 stars in Latin NCAP crash tests

The Toyota Etios is the only small car to achieve such a high score. To give you a bit of perspective, the score secured by the Toyota Etios is equivalent to the Chevrolet Cruze in Latin NCAP – a car much higher in the value chain.
The Latin NCAP rates the safety of the car on following points:
Front impact at 64kph
Child protection
Seat belt reminders

In Brazil, Toyota wants to pitch the Etios as a Toyota car with good quality, low maintenance, low fuel consumption, good performance, and a good after-sales experience.

Quite surprisingly, Toyota’s marketing team is not focusing on safety of the Etios in Brazil at all. Now that they have the NCAP figures in place, Toyota can now add one more USP to the Etios.

I think this information is misleading. Latin NCAP website does not list Etios as tested. Logically, it cannot be that Latin NCAP has tested since the car has just been launched (4 days ago) and the website says
(a) it will ONLY test cars that have already been launched and pick the 'best selling variant' and
(b) it publishes the results right away.
So, I don't think a car launched 4 days ago has been tested already.
What I did gather is that Toyota announced at the time of launch of Etios in Brazil 4 days ago that it hopes to get a 4-star rating.

It will be interesting to see the kerb / crash test weight of the Etios when published by Latin NCAP and compare it to the mere 880-odd kilos it weighs in India. I'm guessing that if it does get a 4-star rating in Latin NCAP, it will weigh a lot more.

Toyota Etios Cross expected in Brazil next year; Will India get it too?

Brazilians want their cars to look good and that has prompted Toyota to consider a spruced-up version of the Etios hatchback called the ‘Etios Cross’ according to our friends at C&D Brazil.

Toyota commenced sales of the Etios in Brazil last month in both hatchback and sedan versions. The cars are locally built and powered by a 1.3 litre and a 1.4 litre flex-fuel motors. Compared to the Indian cousins, the Brazilian models have better sound insulation, a 15% increase in body stiffness and new materials and trims on the cabin.

Toyota Brazil is considering a cosmetically upgraded version of the Etios hatcback (no Liva branding for Brazil) which is expected to hit the market next year. The visual treatment will be something like what Skoda did with the Fabia Scout, a variant that’s leading a silent life in India.

As per the rendering by Car and Driver magazine, the Etios Cross has an off-roader like front bumper, blacked-out grill and headlamps. The side profile gets oomph through black skirts and the wheel arches also get the black cladding.
The roof rails, black mirrors, 15″ alloy wheels with grey finish and the body decals enhance its off-road flavour, however there would be no increment in the ground clearance to make the Etios actually go off the road.

The Etios cross is expected to be introduced in Brazil next year with a slight premium from the existing high end XLS variant. The Etios Cross will be available only with the 1.5 litre flex fuel engine.

Will Toyota consider launching this variant in India to boost the brand image of the Etios? They are certainly capable as nothing held them back from doing a full-blown sporty TRD special edition.
