Tata Motors and Tata Power inaugurate India’s largest Solar Carport at its Car Plant in Pune

Pune, June 18, 2021:
In line with Tata Group’s philosophy to promote green manufacturing, Tata Motors and Tata Power jointly inaugurated India’s largest grid-synchronized, behind-the-meter solar carport at the Tata Motors car plant in Chikhali, Pune. The 6.2 MWp solar carport deployed by Tata Power will generate 86.4 lakh kWh of electricity per year and is estimated to reduce 7,000 tons of carbon emissions annually and 1.6 lakh tons over its lifecycle.

Spanning over 30,000 square meters, this carport will not only generate green power, but will also provide covered parking for finished cars in the plant.

Envisioned as part of its net zero carbon goal for 2039, Tata Motors had entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tata Power on August 31, 2020. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, both companies successfully managed to develop this massive carport infrastructure in a record time of 9.5 months.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “At Tata Motors, we have consciously anchored sustainability in every aspect of our business by striving for more meaningful ways to reduce our impact on the planet, whilst providing exciting products and sustainable solutions to our customers. We have always been conscious of the need to conserve energy and are committed towards achieving 100% renewable energy source for all our operations. Our partnership with Tata Power to deploy India’s largest solar carport at our car plant in Pune is a step in that direction.”

“As One Tata initiative, we are proud to partner with Tata Motors and inaugurate India’s largest solar carport. Our partnership is a testament to our collective efforts to lower the carbon footprint and provide innovative and future-focused green energy solutions. We will continue to explore new ways to harness clean resources and offer them to our partners and customers.” Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power said.

Being a signatory of the RE100, Tata Motors is committed to use 100% renewable power and has taken several strides towards achieving this goal by progressively increasing the proportion of renewable energy used in its operations. In FY20, the company generated 88.71 million kWh of renewable electricity which is over 21% of its total power consumption (up from 16% in FY19). This helped prevent the equivalent of 72,739 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The company further intends to source renewable energy more rigorously to meet its aspiration of sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

Tata Power comes with a successful background of executing multiple large solar solutions including the world’s largest rooftop (16MW) at a single location at Radhasoami Satsang Beas (RSSB), Amritsar; 2.67MW at Cochin International Airport; world’s largest solar powered cricket stadium-Cricket Club of India (CCI) with 820.8 kWp capacity; unique installation of solar vertical farm (120kW) at Dell Technologies at Bangalore and 1.4MW floating solar at Tata Chemicals, Nellore. In addition, Tata Power is carrying out an extensive pan-India residential rooftop program to make people aware on the benefits of savings through solar energy.

Tata Motors bags order of 15 hydrogen-based fuel cell buses from Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

The buses will be used to evaluate the potential of developing hydrogen-based PEM fuel-cell technology in India

Mumbai, 30 June, 2021: Reaffirming its commitment towards sustainable mobility, Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle player and leading bus manufacturer, announced that it has won a tender of 15 hydrogen-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell buses from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). IOCL had invited bids for supply of PEM fuel cell buses in December 2020, and Tata Motors was selected as the winner following a diligent evaluation process. All 15 buses will be delivered within 144 weeks from the date of signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

In addition to supplying the buses to the Research & Development Centre of IOCL, Tata Motors will also collaborate with them to undertake R&D projects and collectively study further the potential of Fuel Cell technology for commercial vehicles. This will be done by jointly testing, maintaining and operating these buses for public transport in real-world conditions in Delhi-NCR. The buses will be refuelled by hydrogen, generated and dispensed by IOCL.

Sh. S.M.Vaidya, Chairman, IndianOil,
stated that IndianOil has been pioneering the national efforts towards ushering in the hydrogen economy for various applications, including mobility. This 1st of its kind project in the country is bringing the country’s largest fuel supplier and largest commercial vehicle manufacturer on board to take the hydrogen & fuel cell technology to the next level. This initiative would also act as a stepping stone for various other key programs of IndianOil, which proposes to introduce hydrogen-based mobility on different iconic routes and important sectors in the country. These futuristic steps are in the right direction for making hydrogen as the ultimate net-zero fuel.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Girish Wagh, President, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “We are delighted to win this prestigious tender from IOCL for it adds to Tata Motors’ rich legacy of introducing future ready technologies for cleaner and greener public transport. We have successfully supplied 215 EV buses under FAME I and won orders for 600 EV buses under FAME II. This order to supply PEM Fuel Cell buses from a company as respected as Indian Oil Corporation, further encourages our ongoing efforts on developing India-focused alternative sustainable fuels to transform the future of mobility in India.

Dr. SSV Ramakumar, Director (R&D), IndianOil while congratulating Tata Motors Ltd., mentioned that lot of hard work has been put in by the IndianOil R&D team towards conceiving, planning and executing this joint developmental cum demonstration program with a strong support from Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. IndianOil through cutting edge R&D, is committed to strengthen the production and supply chain of hydrogen energy in India and would be setting up ~1 ton per day hydrogen production pilot plants based on 4 innovative pathways besides collaborating with Tata Motors for fuel cell research.

Looks like Tata motors Passenger segment is on a roll!! Desirability of vehicles is all time high and Sales on going higher and higher. New models are doing great and waiting period of certain vehicles are good. Some cars are giving no discount is a definite positive sign.

Tata motors has set aside the stake sale of its passenger segment as it gets self sustaining is great news for home grown brand. But it should still have a JV partner that can help get technology and FCA seems to be a good partner.

Tata motors said:
Tata Motors is in no hurry to find partner for car business as it becomes self-sustaining

Tata Motors has slowed down its search for a partner in the passenger vehicle segment and is, instead, looking to chart a new plan on its own, buoyed by a turnaround in the business, a senior executive said.

Sustained volume momentum and structured cost-cutting exercise has put the car division in a self-sustaining mode, Shailesh Chandra, president of Passenger Vehicle (PV) business at Tata Motors, said.

Tata Motors has rolled out new finance offers on its passenger vehicle range in association with IndusInd Bank. As part of this partnership, the company will provide a Step Up scheme allowing buyers to choose and buy its vehicles with a special low EMI option scheme for the first 3-6 months. The new scheme gives customers EMI options which have been lowered by 60 per cent starting from ₹ 834 per lakh per month and at attractive interest rate, depending on the scheme and the products. It is also likely to spur demand for its models at a time when buyers' sentiments are not very positive in the market.
