Does that mean MSIL have started using 17 character VIN codes recently?
17 characters are the VIN. Rest 4 characters: 2 special and 2 to identify the manufacturing month and year.

I did not get you there? Could you please elaborate.
Sure buddy. Hope the below mentioned information would suffice.
The $ sign was added by me considering the pattern of various maruthi VIN's.

Mukesh, Ok agreed! It's a maruthi car. MA3 is for Maruthi. [:)]

The number is of 17 characters only (Cheked other posts and confirmed). There are 2 special characters and 2 additional characters.

$MA3FHEB1S00171145$2S

Just read this post by wildon. Typical Maruti VIN has 17 characters which do not have manufacturing date information. Look under the hood (Near hinges for additional characters). I'm quoting the details directly from the VIN thread: http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...le-identification-number-vin-4.html#post38477

Maruti Car VIN has 17 Characters which doesn't carry the Month and Year Code.

For getting the Month and Year code of Maruti car you have to Look Under the Bonnet near to the hinges there will be additional Letter/Number . if you found that for e.g GA then its July 2010 Manufactured Vehicle.

other month are giving below
A= JAN
B= FEB
C= MAR
D= APR
E= MAY
F= JUNE
G= JULY
H= AUG
J= SEP
K= OCT
L= NOV
M= DEC

Thank you for the info Vibhor! I've already seen it.
You are right. 17 digits contain the VIN and the additional characters would help in decoding the manufacturing year and month.

In my case, $MA3FHEB1S00171145$2S, have added the $ assuming the special characters and 2S was the last 2 characters.

Still guesses going around eh???[confused]

Update time!!!

Update Time!!!

Had sent the PDI checklist to my folks and they did a PDI. Everything seemed to be good with regards to the vehicle [:)].

ODO reading: 26 KMs.

The VIN that i provided previously had 2 incorrect characters.

It's not: $MA3FHEB1S00171145$2S

The correct one is: $MA3FHEB1S00171145$MB

Happy to get a December manufactured car after all the hassles with the dealer (Will post the dealership experience once i we get the delivery).

The only thing which i am pretty confused is how the vehicle ran 26 KMs while their stock yard is right behind the showroom?

Might be A-star automatic ?
No comments on it buddy!!![:D]

BTW, PETROL HEADS - STILL NO DECODING DONE ON THE VIN???

Glad you were able to decode the manufacturing date. Now shall I finish the suspense?

MA3 - Corresponds to Manufacturer (Suzuki India)
FHEB1 - Corresponds to the variant (this is either L/V/Z XI/DI)
S00 - Indicates type of car (I think so this is for Swift)
171145 - Last six digits indicate unique serial numbers/Chasis ID.
MB - Dec 2011

Am I right?
