BMW recalls iX and X1 vehicles for Airbag problems

BMW is recalling more than 15,800 iX and X1 vehicles because the driver's front airbags may not have been manufactured correctly. The recalled 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60 and 2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i vehicles need new driver's airbags.

A BMW driver may not be fully protected in a crash if the airbag deployment trajectory is wrong. BMW was conducting a test in January when an abnormal airbag deployment occurred, causing engineers to open an investigation.

BMW determined the vehicle would not violate federal regulations, but the automaker found other models may have had the same airbag problems.BMW has not received any reports of crashes or injuries. BMW expects to mail airbag recall letters April 7, 2023.

Nissan recalls 809,000 Rogue Models for Shutoff Risk while driving

A Nissan Rogue ignition key recall involves about 809,000 Rogues and Rogue Sports if the keys are jackknife folding style. (Think switchblade knife)

Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport owners are advised to avoid attaching accessories to the jackknife key fobs and to use the keys in the nonfolding positions until recall repairs are available.

The 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue and 2017-2022 Nissan Rogue Sport vehicles are recalled because the jackknife ignition keys may collapse into folded positions and inadvertently shut off the Rogues.

Nissan says any contact between the driver and key fob could shut down the Rogue. Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport owners will receive interim recall letters in March 2023.

Nissan dealers will provide interim repairs that involve inserting fasteners into the key slots that will prevent the keys from folding. Rogue and Rogue Sport owners will be mailed second recall letters once dealers have the necessary parts.

Nissan dealers will insert spacers into the jackknife key slots of the key fobs that will prevent the jackknife keys from collapsing.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans recalled for Fire risk

Sprinter VS30 vans are recalled because wiring harnesses may overheat and cause fires. Recalled are more than 53,000 model year 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VS30 and Freightliner Sprinter VS30 vans.

Mercedes says the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) blower motor circuit may not be adequate which could allow the harness to overheat. Mercedes noticed the problem in February 2022 while reviewing "thermal events" in Sprinter vans, including incidents outside the U.S.

Two fires were traced to the fuse boxes, and engineers put vans through driving tests to determine the cause of the fires. Mercedes concluded 11 Sprinter vans in the U.S. suffered fires or other thermal incidents, although no injuries or deaths have been reported.

According to Mercedes-Benz, "the fuse layout of the interior blower motor might not meet the requirements for prolonged operation at the highest blower setting."

Mercedes is advising Sprinter drivers to only operate the HVAC front blower in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the engine is on. Do not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest temperature settings until the van is repaired.

Dealers will relocate and replace the fuses and wiring harnesses once owner notification letters are mailed April 14, 2023.

Hyundai recalls 2012-2013 Velosters after 5 fires

Hyundai is recalling more than 26,000 older Velosters due to a risk of fires from short circuits. The 2012-2013 Veloster cars are equipped with reverse park aid sensors that can short-circuit when "high conductive liquid" leaks into the sensors.

Hyundai says faulty sealing of the printed circuit board within the sensor assembly allows the liquid intrusion and resulting short-circuit. Hyundai Canada opened an investigation in July 2022 after reports of fires in 2012 and 2013 Velosters. The fires were caused by the reverse park aid sensors.

The investigation was expanded in February 2023 to include 2012-2017 Velosters cars. Hyundai engineers determined the potting compound in the sensors was changed from a silicon primer mix to butadiene to improve the seal against water intrusion into the body of the sensor.

That change occurred in October 2013. Hyundai is aware of at least five fires in 2012-2013 Velosters in the U.S., but no crash or injury reports. A Hyundai Veloster driver may notice failure of the rear park assist feature or the gear shifter may get stuck in PARK.

Hyundai Veloster recall letters are expected to be mailed April 29, 2023, and dealers will replace the reverse park aid sensors and fuses.

Kia K5 recall issued to replace Side Curtain Airbags

The recall includes about 189,000 vehicles equipped with side curtain airbags that may not deploy properly. The 2021-2023 Kia K5 side curtain airbags can fail if they weren't correctly installed at the Kia Georgia assembly plant.

A Kia engineer was inspecting a 2021 K5 that had been involved in a crash. The engineer noticed there may have been a problem with how the driver's side curtain airbag deployed in the crash.

Photos were sent to the Kia Georgia plant where engineers inspected the affected 2021 K5 vehicle and confirmed improper installation of driver’s side curtain airbag. However, the passenger side curtain airbag was installed properly. Kia did a field search but found no additional airbag incidents, no injuries and no fatalities.

Kia K5 recall letters are expected to be mailed April 7, 2023, and dealerships will reinstall the side curtain airbags if necessary.

The Honda seatbelt recall involves 500,000 vehicles.

A Honda seat belt buckle recall involves more than 500,000 vehicles equipped with seat belt buckles that may not latch properly. Honda says these models may have problems with the seat belt buckle release buttons.

  • 2017-2020 Honda CR-V
  • 2018-2019 Honda Accord
  • 2018-2019 Honda Accord Hybrid
  • 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey
  • 2019 Honda Insight
  • 2019-2020 Acura RDX
Manufacturing problems with the front seat belts may cause the seat belt buckle channels to interfere with the release buttons which can prevent the seat belt buckles from latching.

Due to the manufacturing problems, there may be interference between the buckle channel and the release button. Over time the seat belt buckle channel surface coating may deteriorate and shrink the release button against the channel at low temperatures.

Honda says this can increase friction and cause problems latching the seat belt buckle. Honda noticed the problem in June 2019 and tested new parts in addition creating a new tool to confirm the status of the seat belt buckle release button.

By March 2023, Honda was aware of 301 warranty claims related to the issue between March 22, 2019, and January 16, 2023. However, there were no reports of injuries or deaths associated with the seat belt buckle problems. Owners who have paid their own money to repair the seat belt buckle issues should ask Honda for reimbursement.

Honda expects to mail seat belt buckle recall letters April 17, 2023, and dealerships will replace both front seat belt buckle release buttons and possibly the buckle assemblies.

The recall of the Audi Q7 leads to incorrect certification labels

An Audi Q7 recall has been announced for more than 12,000 model year 2009-2015 Q7 SUVs which could be overloaded if owners follow the information on the certification labels. Those labels are wrong regarding the gross axle weight ratings for the Q7 SUVs.

An overloaded Q7 could cause drivers a lot of problems, but the incorrect labels also violate federal safety standards. During an internal review of tire pressure calculations in May 2022, Audi found possible problems with the Q7 vehicle load calculations.

An investigation was opened which found the axle weight printed on the certification labels was overstated by 30 kg on Q7 SUVs with 21-inch wheels. Even though some of the Audi Q7 SUVs have been on the road since 2009, Audi is not aware of any warranty claims, customer complaints or other field reports.

Audi expects to mail recall letters April 14, 2023, and dealerships will install new labels over the old certification labels, and the new labels with contain the correct gross axle weight ratings.

Hyundai and Kia recall 571,000 vehicles due to fire risk, urge owners to park outside

Hyundai and Kia are telling the owners of more than 571,000 SUVs and minivans in the U.S. to park them outdoors because the tow hitch harnesses can catch fire while they are parked or being driven.

The affiliated Korean automakers are recalling the vehicles and warning people to park them away from structures until repairs are made.

Affected Hyundai vehicles include the 2019 to 2023 Santa Fe, the 2021 to 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid, the 2022 and 2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid and the 2022 and 2023 Santa Cruz. The only Kia affected is the Carnival minivan from 2022 and 2023. All have Hyundai or Kia tow hitch harnesses that came as original equipment or were installed by dealers.

The Korean automakers say in documents posted Thursday by U.S. safety regulators that water can get into a circuit board on the hitches and cause a short circuit even if the ignitions are off.

Hyundai has reports of one fire and five heat damage incidents with no injuries. Kia has no reports of fires or injuries. Owners will be notified starting May 16.

Jeep Wrangler Frame Stud recall involves 58,000 Wranglers

A Jeep Wrangler frame stud recall has been announced for nearly 58,000 vehicles because of possible problems with the frame assemblies. The recalled 2020-2023 Jeep Wranglers may have studs on the frame assemblies that may puncture the fuel tanks in crashes, causing fuel to leak. Leaking fuel that hits a hot ignition source may cause a fire.

Chrysler opened an investigation in June 2022 after receiving frame stud reports from an assembly plant. But the automaker could find no warranty claims, field reports, customer assistance records or reports of crashes or injuries.

Chrysler expects to mail Jeep Wrangler recall letters May 12, 2023. Jeep dealerships will inspect the Wranglers and remove the frame studs and apply paint.

BMW recalls 230i, 230i XDrive, M240i and M240i xDrive

BMW airbag problems have caused a recall of more than 800 model year 2023 BMW 230i, 230i XDrive, M240i and M240i xDrive vehicles. BMW says the recall is necessary because the second-row seat backrest cover panels for the side airbags may break when the airbags deploy. This can cause an increased chance of injuries to the second-row seat occupants.

BMW dealerships will replace the rear seat backrest side airbag cover panels.

Audi recalls A8 and S8 for Airbag problems

Audi is recalling more than 1,000 A8 and S8 vehicles because the front passenger airbags may not have been folded correctly. The 2022-2023 Audi A8 and S8 airbag flaps inside the front passenger airbag modules were not folded correctly.

According to Audi the airbag will still function, but a small person or a child not wearing a seat belt while sitting close to the instrument panel could be hurt by the airbag. Audi found the problem in 2022 while performing an out-of-position front passenger airbag test when the airbag didn't correctly unfold.

The automaker says it isn't aware of any customer complaints, warranty claims or other field reports. Audi expects to mail airbag recall letters April 14, 2023, and dealers will replace the front passenger airbag modules.

Honda recalls 564,000 Honda CR-V vehicles over rusting frames

A Honda CR-V frame rust recall affects nearly 564,000 SUVs, but only in states where road salt is used during winter months. According to Honda, the recalled 2007-2011 Honda CR-V SUVs include those that were sold or ever registered in these areas:

Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin.

Road salt can cause the CR-V frame to corrode and rust and cause the rear trailing arm to detach. This can make it difficult to control the CR-V which can cause the vehicle to go out of control.

In January 2019, Honda informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about a rear frame corrosion recall in Canada for 2007-2011 CR-Vs.

Honda says it studied the Northeast region of the U.S. and determined the rate of CR-V rear frame rust would not affect the structural integrity for the useful life of the SUVs. Honda believed this because there were "fewer unpaved roads and lower sand/salt usage in the region as compared to Canada."

But Honda began receiving reports of corroded CR-V frames in the U.S. and repurchased a vehicle in July 2019 to investigate the problem.

The automaker determined the frame corrosion rate was equal to the Canadian rate, but only for U.S. salt-belt states. As of March 23, 2023, Honda has received 61 CR-V frame rust complaints from the U.S. between September 2018 through March 2023, but no reports of fatalities or injuries.

Honda CR-V frame rust recall letters are expected to be mailed May 8, 2023. Honda dealers will possibly install support braces to the SUVs if needed. However, Honda may offer to repurchase the CR-V if the frame rust is beyond repair.

VW Atlas recall: U.S. warns owners to keep front passenger seats empty pending fix

The recall of more than 161,000 VW vehicles is caused by faults in the wiring of the passenger occupant detection systems.

Model year 2018-2021 Volkswagen Atlas and 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport SUVs may have front passenger airbags that deactivate with occupants in the seats.

The problem is bad enough that Volkswagen is warning people to stay out of the front passenger seats of the recalled 2018-2021 Volkswagen Atlas and 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport vehicles.

However, people may need to avoid the front passenger seats for an indeterminate amount of time because VW doesn't know how dealers will repair the problem. According to VW, the Atlas SUVs are equipped with passenger occupant detection systems (also known as Body Sense) in the front passenger seats.

A driver should see a warning light, hear a warning sound and see an error message if the problem occurs. VW plans on mailing interim recall letters May 26, 2023, then second recall letters will be mailed when dealers are ready to repair the vehicles.

GM Recalls Nearly 170k Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Vehicles Over Increased Fire Risk

A recall of 2003-2023 Chevrolet Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway vehicles involves more than 174,000 vehicles at risk of fires. This is a large recall for cutaway vehicles, and the recalled vehicles go all the way back to model year 2003.

General Motors says the Chevy and GMC Cutaways are equipped with wiring for optional rear heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. But GM says the circuit can corrode and overheat when the HVAC blower motor circuit is left unused with exposed connectors and wiring.

GM opened an investigation in December 2022 to investigate two alleged fire incidents involving 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Express Cutaway vehicles. At least six vehicle fires have been reported, but GM is unaware of any crash or injury reports.

GM dealerships will seal the rear HVAC blower motor circuits at the left side B-pillars once recall letters are mailed May 22, 2023.
