Nissan Infotainment System problems cause recall

Nissan infotainment system problems have caused a recall of more than 10,000 of these vehicles if they are rental vehicles.

  • 2021-2022 Nissan Rogue (Built from August 6, 2020, to May 10, 2022)
  • 2022 Nissan Frontier (Built from July 29, 2021, to April 21, 2022)
  • 2022 Nissan Pathfinder (Built from May 27, 2021, to May 17, 2022)
  • 2022 Nissan Titan (Built from December 18, 2021, to May 25, 2022)
According to Nissan, when the Sirius XM subscription is set to "Not Subscribed," it may cause the infotainment head unit to reboot and disable the rearview camera.

Nissan says the rental vehicles are equipped with Bosch infotainment systems that use specific software in combination with a radio subscription status set to "not subscribed" for the rental customer.

Vehicles not used as Nissan rental vehicles are put in a "suspended" subscription status when the owner doesn't have an active subscription, so those Nissan vehicles aren't included in the recall.

On affected Nissan rental vehicles, when the rental customer declines satellite radio service and the Sirius XM subscription is set to “Not Subscribed,” the infotainment system will still attempt to fetch preset channel information. However, due to the subscription status the head unit cannot receive channel information.

According to Nissan, after four minutes of searching for channel information, an internal timer forces the infotainment system to reboot and it may frequently reboot causing the backup camera to become inoperable during the reboot process. Nissan expects to mail recall letters July 29, 2022, and dealers will update the infotainment system software.

VW Backup Camera Image failures lead to recall

Volkswagen backup camera image failures have caused a recall of more than 43,000 of these vehicles to update the infotainment system software.

  • 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI
  • 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
  • 2021 Volkswagen Jetta NF
  • 2021 Volkswagen Arteon FL
  • 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan LWB
  • 2022 Volkswagen Taos
  • 2022 Volkswagen Jetta PA
  • 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan PA
  • 2021-2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
  • 2021-2022 Volkswagen Atlas FL
The rearview camera image problem was caused during manufacturing of the eMMC memory module in the infotainment system. Specifically, Volkswagen learned in November 2021 about a certain type of eMMC memory module and flashing software to the chip prior to soldering it to the board caused an undervoltage.

Engineers performed multiple tests which were inconclusive and no claims had been received from consumers. However, the backup camera failures do cause violations of federal safety standards.VW also says it isn't aware of any U.S. warranty claims.

Volkswagen expects to mail recall letters September 16, 2022.

Mercedes vehicles at risk of Fires from short circuits
Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 27,300 vehicles with transmission wiring harnesses that may be misrouted which can expose the electrical connectors to corrosion, causing an electrical short-circuit.

  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT43
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz E450 Wagon
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe
  • 2019-2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG E53
  • 2019-2023 Mercedes-Benz E53 Coupe
  • 2019-2023 Mercedes-Benz E53 Cabriolet
  • 2019-2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT53
  • 2019-2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS450
  • 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS53
Mercedes-Benz owners were complaining in 2019 about warnings regarding the 12-volt batteries or the 4Matic systems. Engineers found corrosion of the transmission wire harness connectors but no reports of fires.

But in 2021 owners outside the U.S. reported their vehicles caught fire. Engineers found production deviations in the routing and the length of the cable in the transmission wiring harness caused a strain on the single-wire seal. Then separation of the seal could allow water to penetrate the electrical connector.

Mercedes-Benz says tension on the transmission wiring harness could lead to wire insulation pulling back from the electrical connector. This can allow water to contact the connector and cause a short-circuit.

According to the automaker, a driver could be alerted to a problem if the yellow battery light illuminates or the "4Matic malfunction" warning message lights up.

Recall letters are expected to be mailed September 20, 2022, and dealers will repair the electrical connectors and reroute the harnesses. In addition, an additional bracket will be installed.

  • 2013-2015 Ferrari LaFerrari
  • 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta
  • 2019-2022 Ferrari Portofino
Ferrari’s investigation revealed the brake fluid reservoir cap did not provide the proper ventilation for the braking system.

When the quantity of brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir decreases by about 50% of the maximum reservoir level, a warning light will illuminate, while later Ferrari models will also show a warning message that says, “Brake fluid level low, Go to dealer slowly." Additionally, some models also provide a buzzer sound.

Drivers are warned if the “Low Brake Fluid” warning message appears on the dashboard, the driver should pull off the road as soon as it is safe to do so and contact Ferrari Roadside Assistance to get towed to a dealership.

The Ferrari recall is an expansion of an October 2021 recall for Ferrari 458 and 488 cars for brake failures. Ferrari expects to mail recall notices September 24, 2022. Ferrari dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir caps and update the software to provide new warning messages for low brake fluid.

Jeep Grand Cherokees recalled over Tail lights

A Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L tail light recall involves about 100,000 SUVs with tail light side marker assemblies that may be damaged. The damage can prevent the markers from illuminating, reducing visibility to other drivers.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles may not meet federal lighting standards. Those standards say each vehicle must be equipped with at least two red steady-burning tail light side markers.

Fiat Chrysler opened an investigation in January after a dealer requested to return Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L tail lights. Jeep dealers will possibly replace both body-mounted tail light assemblies once owner recall letters are mailed September 16, 2022.

Kia recalls 258,000 Optimas following Injury Lawsuit

A Kia Optima recall has been announced for 2012-2013 Optimas with right and left headliner plates that may detach when the side curtain airbags deploy.

Kia says the fault is found in how the headliner plates are secured in 258,000 cars, placing occupants in danger of being hit by the plates.

The Kia Optima headliner plates are used for the energy absorbing structure of the headliner, but a lawsuit let Kia know there may be problems.

The legal department learned of a product liability lawsuit alleging a metal bracket injured a driver during the deployment of the side curtain airbag in a 2012 Kia Optima equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Kia engineers inspected the Optima and determined the driver’s side headliner plate may have detached from headliner during deployment of the side curtain airbag.

The automaker opened an investigation and learned 2011-2015 Optimas manufactured in Korea have a different supplier and different adhesive application process to the headliner plates compared to Optimas manufactured at a Kia plant in Georgia. The one known case occurred in the Optima built at Kia Georgia, and Kia is unaware of any other incidents.

Kia dealers will add an industrial-grade adhesive tape over the left and right headliner plates to further secure the plates to the headliner. Kia Optima recall letters will be mailed September 26, 2022.

Around 76,500 Mitsubishi Outlander Sports SUVs recalled over damaged Engines

A 2019-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport recall involves about 76,500 SUVs equipped with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and mechanical key ignition systems.

A software error in the transmission control unit may incorrectly reduce the transmission gear ratio at high speeds. This can cause the Outlander Sport engine to stall.

It's the engine damage that can cause the vehicle to stall. Mitsubishi learned in May 2019 about three U.S. reports indicating the Outlander Sport engines either did not start, or they stalled while driving. The automaker opened an investigation by collecting the failed engines which showed "piston to exhaust valve contact" but no cause.

Six more reports were filed as the investigation continued and all the Mitsubishi engines showed the same problem. Engineers focused on the CVTs and determined the software may have been causing problems.

Mitsubishi says 2011-2018 Outlander Sports equipped with CVTs and mechanical keys are very similar to the 2019-2022 models, but the automaker is not aware of similar incidents in the 2011-2018 models.

Mitsubishi has received 21 field reports and 29 potential warranty claims from the U.S. between May 2019 and May 2022, but no crash or fire incidents.

Mitsubishi dealers will update the transmission control units as owner recall letters are mailed August 24, 2022.

Ford recalls Maverick Trucks vver side Curtain Airbags

A Ford Maverick recall involves about 65,000 trucks with side curtain airbags that may fail. Although Ford is still investigating the root cause of the problem, the automaker does know the trucks are in violation of federal safety standards.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted Ford in June following a compliance audit on a 2022 Ford Maverick.

"The displacement results for the front lower primary target was 111.9 mm which exceeds the federal regulation of 100 mm. Ford’s certification test from December 2020 indicates a displacement of 82.5 – 88.4 mm which meets the regulation of 100 mm and the Ford Acceptance Criteria (FAC) of 93.1 m." — NHTSA
Additional tests conducted by Ford on 2022 Maverick trucks didn't help engineers determine the root cause of the airbag problems.

According to Ford, there are no crash or injury reports relating to the airbags.

Ford Maverick recall letters will be mailed September 22, 2022, and dealerships will replace both front side curtain airbag modules.

GM recalls nearly half-million large SUVs for possible Seat Belt issue

SUVs manufactured by General Motors are the subject of a new safety recall involving seat belts. Only models from 2021 and 2022 with third-row seats are affected.
The recall focuses on the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Chevrolet Suburban. The problem stems from a rivet that holds the seat belt buckle to a mounting bracket on either the left or right side of the third-row seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rivet may have been improperly formed. As such, there's a possibility the seat belt could fail to properly restrain occupants, thus leading to an increased risk of injury or death should a crash occur.

In a safety recall report on the issue, General Motors states there are no known injuries resulting from this issue. The company was made aware of a potential problem in May 2022, when a customer reported a third-row seat belt buckle in a 2021 Suburban separated from the mount. An investigation found seven other field reports possibly resulting from the same issue, which appears to come from a supplier that didn't manufacture the large rivet correctly.

As you might expect, Chevrolet Tahoes comprise the bulk of the recall with 176,981 potential units affected. 97,436 Yukons are on the list, followed by 84,338 Suburbans, 58,606 Yukon XLs, 41,636 Escalades, and 25,158 Escalade ESVs. All total, 484,155 vehicles are included in the recall. However, it's worth noting that General Motors estimates just two percent of these SUVs might have defective seat belts.

The Vehicle owners will have their third-row seat belts inspected by a dealership. If a defective rivet is found, the seat belt buckle assembly will be replaced. GM notified dealers of the recall on August 11; customer notifications are estimated to begin on September 26.

Ford F-150 Driveshaft recall expanded

A Ford F-150 driveshaft recall involves more than 58,000 model year 2021-2022 F-150 trucks equipped with underbody heat and noise insulators that may loosen and contact the aluminum driveshafts. This could damage the F-150 driveshafts and cause them to break.

Ford opened an internal investigation in May after reports of broken F-150 aluminum driveshafts that occurred in F-150 trucks that were not included in a December 2021 driveshaft recall.

Engineers found underbody insulators which were installed by mistake on certain F-150 Crew Cab trucks that were neither designed nor intended to be built with underbody insulators. If the underbody insulators loosen and contact the aluminum driveshaft, the driveshaft could become scored (marked) and result in a reduction in thickness. That local section may become overloaded which can cause the driveshaft to fracture.

A busted driveshaft will prevent the F-150 from moving forward and could also allow the truck to roll away even with the transmission in PARK. Ford F-150 owners should use their parking brakes.

As of August 3, Ford is aware of four warranty reports in the U.S. for fractured aluminum driveshafts due to apparent underbody insulator contact on F-150 trucks not intended to be equipped with the underbody insulators.

Ford F-150 driveshaft recall letters are expected to be mailed September 5, 2022, and dealers plan on repairing the driveshafts and attaching the underbody insulators if they are supposed to be installed.

Hyundai recalls Palisades following Windshield Wiper failures

A Hyundai Palisade windshield wiper motor recall has been announced following more than 50 reports of failed windshield wipers on the 2020-2021 SUVs. About 123,000 model year 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisades are affected by the recall. The Hyundai Palisade windshield wiper motor could work part of the time or completely stop working, especially if snow or ice is blocking the wipers.

In August 2020, Hyundai noticed increase warranty claims for windshield wiper-related problems on certain 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade SUVs in the U.S. More windshield wiper failures were reported as engineers tried to find the root cause of the motor failures.

Hyundai worked with the supplier and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as more and more wiper motors failed. The supplier said it discontinued the P63H wiper motor in December 2020 and replaced it with a new version (PS56) that was already being used in other models.

Engineers finally found evidence the P63H windshield wiper motor’s internal gear could become damaged under external forces such as ice or snow. Out of 18 wiper motors that were analyzed, 14 failed due to broken gears or stripped gear teeth.

While Hyundai has confirmed 57 reports of windshield wiper failures in the U.S. from July 31, 2019, through June 8, 2022, there are no confirmed crashes or injuries.

Hyundai is still working on how it will fix the windshield wiper problem, but Palisade owners should watch for recall letters in October 2022.
