Ford recalls Transit Connect Vans for loose Windshields

Ford has announced two recalls for Transit Connect and Transit vans.
A Ford Transit Connect windshield recall involves nearly 40,000 vans with windshields that may have been installed with inadequate adhesion, a problem that could allow the windshields to detach from the vans.

The recall affects model year 2016 and model year 2020 Transit Connects following at least 360 warranty claims and nearly 400 field reports related to loose or detached windshields.

In July 2019, Ford was receiving an increase in field claims on 2016-2018 Transit Connect windshield water leaks, wind noise and loose windshields. However, no owners said the windshields detached from the vans.

Engineers found most of the claims and complaints were associated with minor wind noise and water leaks caused by urethane adhesion problems.

But engineers didn't see any safety-related problems and decided to monitor any further incidents.

Ford noticed an increase in warranty claims in September 2021 related to loose and leaking windshields in 2020 Transit Connects, and the symptoms occurred about 12 months into first use of the vans.

However, there were still no detached windshields, and Ford is unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the windshields.

Ford Transit Connect owners will receive windshield recall letters in April 2022, and dealers will inspect and possibly remove and properly reinstall the windshields.

2022 Ford Transit Recall
In a separate recall of more than 300 Transit vans, Ford dealers need to update image software related to the backup cameras.

According to Ford, the "image processing module for the 360-degree camera system may not process the image from the rearview camera under certain rear loading vehicle conditions."

Ford Transit recall letters will be mailed April 25, 2022.

2021 Ford F-150 Trucks may suddenly shift into Neutral

2021-ford-f-150-pcm-recall-(1)-250.png
A 2021 Ford F-150 recall includes more than 47,000 trucks because the transmissions may suddenly shift into NEUTRAL for no apparent reason.

The 2021 Ford F-150 trucks may have problems with the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for low transmission fluid that may activate when it shouldn't.

The 2021 Ford F-150 trucks are equipped with 3.5L GTDI, 2.7L and 5.0L engines, 10R80 transmissions, and all the trucks were built between July 28, 2021, and December 20, 2021.

Ford emphasizes the 2021 F-150 trucks are not equipped with Auto Start-Stop technology.

The truck can shift into NEUTRAL while driving at any speed, coasting to a stop as the electronic shifter tries to engage PARK below speeds of 2 mph. The shifter will automatically shift into PARK when the F-150 comes to a complete stop.

As for why this is happening?

"A transmission calibration diagnostic logic was inadvertently activated for certain vehicles without Auto Start-Stop technology." — Ford
A 2021 Ford F-150 driver will see an illuminated wrench light, but the transmission will begin working normally during a key-off/key-on cycle.

Ford saw an increase in "transmission fluid pressure low" DTC P0868 codes being set on specific 2021 F-150 trucks equipped with 3.5L GTDI, 2.7L and 5.0L engines and 10R80 transmissions.

Engineering found that one of the powertrain diagnostic logic software branches was turned on in error when the trucks were built.

There were 28 warranty claims between October 22, 2021, and February 9, 2022.

Ford expects to mail F-150 recall letters May 2, 2022, and dealers will update the powertrain control module software.

Tesla recalls nearly 128,000 Cars in China due to defect

Tesla has recalled nearly 128,000 cars in China due to a fault that could "increase the risk of vehicle collision", the country's state market regulator said. It is the latest hitch for the US electric vehicle giant that is hugely popular in China, but has also faced complaints from consumers and been hit by Covid-19 lockdowns. About 127,785 domestic and imported Tesla Model 3 cars were recalled due to a rear motor inverter defect discovered after regulators launched a probe, according to a Thursday notice.

In December Tesla recalled almost 200,000 vehicles from China over a trunk defect that increased the risk of collisions.

Tesla Backup Camera Recall Affects Model 3, S and X

tesla-rearview-camera-image-recall-250.png

Tesla is recalling nearly 1,000 model year 2018-2019 Model S, Model X and 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles equipped with Autopilot Computer 2.5.

Tesla says the rearview image may not immediately display when the vehicle begins to reverse, a violation of federal safety standards.

Tesla says the computers can reset in vehicles running firmware releases between 2021.44.25 and 2021.44.25.2.

If the problem occurs, the rearview camera display will appear blank when shifted into REVERSE.

Tesla owner recall notices are expected to be mailed May 17, 2022, and Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update.

Exploding seat belt pretensioners cause recall of Hyundai cars

hyundai-exploding-pretensioner-recall-250.png
Another Hyundai exploding seat belt pretensioner recall has been announced following a 2021 Hyundai pretensioner recall and a March 2022 Kia exploding pretensioner recall.

According to Hyundai, the front driver and passenger seat belt pretensioners in more than 6,200 model year 2021-2022 Elantra and 2020 Accent vehicles use pyrotechnics to deploy the pretensioners in a crash.

Those pretensioners tighten the seat belts against occupants in crash impacts, but Hyundai says the pretensioners may explode during deployment. And the automaker says engineers still haven't figured out exactly what is causing the problem.

In October 2021, the U.S. government contacted Hyundai about a 2021 Hyundai Elantra crash in which the driver-side seat belt pretensioner exploded and sent metal fragments into the occupant's leg.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requested info from Hyundai and the automaker decided to conduct a recall of vehicles equipped with pretensioners from a certain production lot.

Another incident was reported in February 2022 and in March a Kia seat belt pretensioner recall was announced for Sorento Hybrids and Sorento Plug-in Hybrids.

Hyundai expects to mail recall letters May 31, 2022, and dealers will replace the seat belt pretensioners in the vehicles.

VW Tiguan rear hatch spoiler recall: Spoilers may detach

vw-tiguan-rear-hatch-spoiler-recall-250 (1).png
A Volkswagen Tiguan rear hatch spoiler recall includes more than 6,500 model year 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan and 2018-2021 Tiguan long wheel base vehicles because the spoilers may detach from the vehicles.

Volkswagen says the rear hatch spoiler can loosen and fall off because of poor adhesion, making the spoiler a serious hazard for other vehicles and their occupants.

VW says the entire problem was caused by the rear hatch spoiler installation instructions, which were wrong.

In October 2021, Volkswagen noticed increased rear hatch spoiler warranty claims and made the spoiler accessory option unavailable until engineers could investigate why claims had increased.

VW performed lab analysis for the spoiler adhesives and the failure modes, and the automaker saw enough of a problem to issue this recall.

Volkswagen says it received 42 Tiguan rear hatch spoiler warranty claims between July 25, 2018, and December 16, 2021.

In addition to the Tiguan rear hatch spoiler recall, Volkswagen is recalling more than 270 spoilers sold as accessories for 2018-2022 Tiguan long wheel base vehicles. The recalled rear hatch spoiler part numbers are 5NA-071-644--C9A and 5NA-071-644--C9.

Volkswagen expects to mail Tiguan rear hatch spoiler recall notices June 3, 2022. VW dealers will need to replace the spoilers.

Lexus NX SUVs recalled because the Shocks may detach

A 2022 Lexus NX recall involves about 4,500 SUVs because the front shocks may be missing welds where the shock absorbers are mounted to the body panels.

The 2022 Lexus NX and NX Hybrid shock absorbers may separate from their mounting areas and cause a loss of stability.

About 500 of the recalled Lexus NX SUVs are in Canada, but the automaker didn't announce more details other than how dealerships plan on inspecting the welding around the shock absorber mounting areas.

Toyota is working on what dealers will do if there are missing welds.

Lexus NX recall letters will be mailed in June 2022.

Tesla Boombox Recall Includes 600,000 Vehicles

A Tesla Boombox recall has been expanded following a February Boombox recall to disable the feature when the vehicle is in DRIVE, NEUTRAL or REVERSE.

This expanded recall supersedes the February recall and includes about 600,000 model year 2020-2022 Tesla Model Y, Model X, Model S and 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles.

The Boombox function allows sounds to be played through an external speaker while the vehicle is in motion, but those sounds could block the pedestrian warning system sounds.

Federal safety standards require pedestrian alert sounds for electric and hybrid vehicles and prohibit automakers from altering or modifying the sounds.

But the Tesla Boombox function allows a customer to play preset or custom sounds through the pedestrian alert external speaker when the vehicle is parked or in motion, including if Summon or Smart Summon is in use.

Tesla vehicles that received the update under the February recall but not equipped with Summon or Smart Summon no longer violate safety standards. But Tesla knows Summon or Smart Summon could later be added to a vehicle which would then make the vehicle illegal.

Tesla is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the Boombox issue.

Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update that will disable the Boombox function when the vehicle is using Summon or Smart Summon.

Tesla Model Y, Model X, Model S and Model 3 owner recall letters will be mailed around June 6, 2022.

Tesla recalls model X SUVs over side curtain Airbag problems

Tesla Model X SUVs may suffer from front side curtain airbag problems as rolling down the front windows may cause the airbags to fail. More than 7,200 model year 2021-2022 Model X SUVs are involved in the recall.

According to Tesla, rolling down a front window can cause the side curtain airbag to make contact with the A-pillar trim when the airbag deploys.

Tesla noticed problems in December 2021 when testing a Model X, finding a problem with the deployment of the side front-row curtain airbag.

Engineers investigated 2021-2022 Model X SUVs and also used a third-party for testing. The results showed some of the front side curtain airbags didn't meet federal safety standards, although the automaker isn't aware of any warranty claims, crashes or injuries related to the airbag problems.

Tesla technicians will need to replace the left and right frontal side curtain airbags, and Model X owners will be mailed recall letters in June 2022.

Mercedes recalls many models for Backup Camera failures

Mercedes-Benz backup camera failures have caused a recall of more than 137,000 vehicles that may have software errors that leave drivers without the rearview images.

In total, 126,443 of these vehicles are recalled in the U.S. and 10,556 are recalled in Canada.
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
  • 2018-2021 Mercedes-Benz EQC-Class
Mercedes opened investigations in November 2018 after complaints about vans that suffered from rearview camera image failures. The supplier was sent the affected parts as the company also worked on updated software.

But the COVID-19 virus slowed things down, including with operations conducted by Mercedes. The automaker finally determined vehicles other than vans were affected by backup camera failures.

Mercedes also determined even the first updated camera software wasn't repairing the image failures, but from December 2018 to August 2021, only eight reports were received about camera image failures.

Mercedes also hasn't received any reports of crashes, injuries or property damage caused by backup camera failures.

An owner will know of a problem when engaging REVERSE but the display goes black or remains on the existing image.

Mercedes dealers will update the backup camera software once recall notices are mailed June 7, 2022.

Mercedes vehicles at risk of Fires under the seats

A Mercedes-Benz recall affects multiple models at risk of fires from the 48-volt ground connections under the front passenger seats.
Mercedes says a ground cable bolt for the 48V ground connection may not be secured properly which can cause the electrical cable to overheat.

About 21,000 of these vehicles are recalled in the U.S. and 3,261 are recalled in Canada.

  • 2020-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE450
  • 2020-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS450
  • 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE53
  • 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE580
  • 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS580
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE63
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS600
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS63
In January 2021, Mercedes opened an investigation because of reports outside the U.S. and the next month a U.S. report was filed.

Improvements were made during production, but then a 48-volt ground connection problem occurred on a vehicle that had been repaired during production. Engineers restarted the investigation and determined the bolts may not have been properly torqued.

Mercedes didn't mention if fires were reported, but the automaker says it hasn't received any crash, injury or property damage reports.

A driver may see warning messages on the instrument clusters relating to the 48V onboard power supply.

Mercedes expects to mail recall notices June 7, 2022, and dealers will inspect and tighten the ground cable bolts.

Ford Windshield Wiper recall involves 650,000 vehicles

A Ford windshield wiper recall involves more than 650,000 of these vehicles equipped with windshield wiper arms that may break.
  • 2020-2021 Ford F-150
  • 2020-2021 Ford Expedition
  • 2020-2022 Ford F-250
  • 2020-2022 Ford F-350
  • 2020-2022 Ford F-450
  • 2020-2022 Ford F-550
  • 2020-2021 Lincoln Navigator
In August 2021, Ford was told about a Ford Expedition with windshield wiper splines that were stripped. Ford says the passenger and driver wiper arms are independently attached to the wiper system, but several warranty claims were filed about stripped splines in the wiper arms.

The supplier found certain areas of the wiper arms were out of specification, and engineers determined the same type of windshield wiper arms were installed on Ford F-150, Medium Duty and Super Duty trucks, and on Lincoln Navigators.

"Further investigation of the supplier processes found that tooth head casting was not being measured correctly for wiper arms used on these products." — Ford
Ford continued to monitor the field and saw an increase of reports which coincided with cold weather. Engineers also found differences in windshield wiper motor torque by vehicle line could make a difference how the wiper arms performed.

"Product review found that Expedition, Navigator and 2020 model year F-150 vehicles incorporate a higher torque wiper motor, with a maximum torque of 72 Nm. Other vehicles (e.g., most 2021 model year F-150) utilize a different smart wiper motor that electronically limits the torque to 46 Nm." — Ford
According to Ford, by February 25, 2022, there have been 257 reports of failed or detached windshield wiper arms on 2020-2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

Another 380 reports were filed on 2020-2022 Ford Super Duty trucks, 76 on 2020 Ford F-150s and 41 reports on certain 2021 Ford F-150 trucks that were built with different higher torque windshield wiper motors due to chip shortage issues.

However, Ford is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the windshield wiper problems.

A Ford driver may notice erratic or slow wiper speeds.

Ford windshield wiper recall notices are expected to be mailed May 23, 2022. Ford dealers will need to replace both front windshield wiper arms.

This will be the second windshield recall in the past two months for certain owners of 2021 Ford F-150 trucks. In March, Ford announced a windshield wiper recall for 157,000 F-150 trucks, except the March recall was necessary due to failed wiper motors.

Nissan Sentra headlight replacement recall affects 6,000 Cars
A Nissan Sentra headlight replacement recall has been announced for about 6,000 model year 2020 Sentras equipped with LED headlights.

The recall applies only to the right-hand headlights that may not be aimed correctly.

According to the replacement headlight recall, the 2020 Sentra cars don't meet federal safety standards because the right-hand lights were misaligned during manufacturing in Mexico.

Problems were discovered regarding right-hand LED headlights during an audit at the supplier in March 2020. The supplier contacted Nissan when "the supplier discovered that the correct aiming logic was not applied when setting the right-hand LED head lamp aim parameters."

Although Nissan confirmed a noncompliance with safety standards, the supplier argued a Petition of Decision of Inconsequential Noncompliance should be filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nissan filed the petition with NHTSA and asked regulators to grant the petition which would allow the automaker to skip a headlight replacement recall. However, NHTSA denied the petition April 6, 2022.

The recalled 2020 Sentras were built from November 26, 2019, to March 24, 2020. And about 500 of the cars are recalled in Canada.

Nissan Sentra headlight replacement recall letters are expected to be mailed June 3, 2022. Nissan dealers will replace the Sentra right-hand LED headlights.

Ferrari recalling 2,222 cars in China over Braking problems

Ferrari is issuing a recall of its Type F142 and Type F142M sports cars in China due to possible braking problems. The Asian country's State Administration for Market Regulation announced the recall on Friday, local time. The recall, however, will begin on May 30, 2022. The reason for the delay wasn't disclosed.

According to China's market regulators, these are the supercars covered by the recall: 458 Italia, 458 Speciale, 458 Speciale A, 458 Spider, 488 GTB, and 488 Spider. The affected models were imported between March 2010 and March 2019.

The announcement in China is part of a global recall that reached the US shores last year. In the Recall Campaign Number 21V833000 of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued last October 23, 2021, around 9,985 units were affected, with the braking system potentially leaking brake fluid, resulting in a loss in braking ability.

Ford recalls Escapes for detached Gear Shift Cables

A Ford Escape recall involves more than 96,000 vehicles that may not shift into the intended gear, may move in an unexpected direction or the Escapes may roll after the driver shifts into PARK.

The 2015 Ford Escapes, equipped with 2-liter engines, have shift cable bushings that may detach. Those bushings attach the shifter cables to the transmissions, and a detached shift cable can cause the above symptoms. According to Ford, the bushing can breakdown and detach due to heat and humidity.

Ford says if the 2015 Ford Escape ignition is on, the correct transmission gear will display on the instrument cluster but it may not match with the position of the gear shift lever. It's also possible the Escape won't start if the gear shift lever indicates the transmission is in PARK.

A 2015 Ford Escape driver won't receive a warning message or audible chime, so owners should always use the parking brakes.

Ford dealers will replace the underhood shifter bushings and add protective caps over the shift cable bushings. Ford Escape recall notices are expected to be mailed May 9, 2022.
