725,000 GMC Terrain SUVs with Too-Bright Headlights Must Be Recalled

2013-GMC-Terrain-Denali-101-2-626x382.jpg

General Motors will need to recall more than 725,000 GMC Terrains to fix a problem with the SUVs' headlights. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been collecting information on GMC Terrains from the 2010 through 2017 model years and claims that the headlights can create “glare to other motorists driving in proximity” in certain weather conditions, including snow and fog.
In a Denial of Petition document posted to the Federal Register Thursday, NHTSA said the headlights in the affected Terrains are simply too bright from some vantage points. Specifically, reflection from the headlamps’ housing illuminates two small areas high above the vehicle that, when measured according to federal motor vehicle safety standards, return a result of approximately 450 to 470 candela. That's more than three times as bright as is allowed at these measurement points, NHTSA said.

In 2019, the automaker asked NHTSA to consider an exemption for the Terrain headlight issue because the "reflection has no effect on vehicle safety for oncoming or surrounding vehicles." It also said that the headlight supplier, Stanley, redesigned replacement headlamps with graining on the surfaces that inadvertently reflected the too-bright light, "which will prevent the reflections that are the cause of the issue." GM also said that it had heard of "only a single customer inquiry associated with this condition and is not aware of any crashes or injuries," with that one customer complaining that the "left headlamp seems to have a portion of the light that shines up in the trees at near a 45-degree angle." That's the extent of it.

Still, NHTSA denied GM's request Friday, and the decision now forces GM to recall the vehicles and fix the headlights at no cost to vehicle owners. NHTSA said that approximately 726,959 Terrains manufactured between May 21, 2009, and July 13, 2017, are potentially involved in this recall.

GM told Reuters that some Terrains have gotten replacement headlight parts that do not cause the same sort of glare and that the problem was fixed for 2018 and later model year Terrains. The automaker said it will now "review NHTSA's decision and explore potential next steps," Reuters reported.

BMW PCV Valve Recall Includes Over 917,000 Vehicles

bmw-pcv-valve-recall-250.png

A BMW PCV valve recall has been issued for the third time because the positive crankcase ventilation valves may short-circuit, overheat and catch fire.
BMW says a fire can occur while driving or shortly after parking the vehicle.

Included in the BMW PCV valve recall are more than 917,000 of these vehicles.

  • 2008-2013 BMW 128i
  • 2007-2013 BMW 328xi, 328i
  • 2007-2010 BMW X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i
  • 2006-2011 BMW 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 330i, 330xi
  • 2006-2012 BMW 328i, 328i xDrive
  • 2006-2010 BMW 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi
  • 2006-2007 BMW 530xi
  • 2007-2010 BMW X5 3.0si, X5 xDrive30i
  • 2006-2011 BMW Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si, Z4 sDrive30i
This BMW PCV valve recall follows a recall in 2017 and another recall in 2019, and all the previously recalled vehicles will need to be repaired once again. However, BMW is still working on how it will repair the vehicles as the "remedy is currently being developed."

According to BMW, the PCV valve heater includes a heating element made of a copper tube, a constant electrical current and a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) element. But the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater (blow-by-heater) may not have been produced correctly by the supplier.

A BMW driver should be aware of a warning light, the odor of burning plastic or smoke coming from around the engine compartment.

BMW learned about an engine compartment fire in 2019 and by the end of 2020 three "thermal events" had been reported in vehicles that had been recalled during earlier PCV valve heater recalls.

Five more thermal incidents occurred and engineers determined the supplier had problems with the components while trying to supply the replacement PCV valve heaters for the previous recalls.

In addition to the vehicles recalled in 2017 and 2019, this BMW PCV valve recall includes 2012-2013 vehicles because they were manufactured with the same engines and PCV valve heater configurations.

Chrysler Recalls Ram 2500, Ram 3500 and Dodge Durango

chrysler-abs-control-module-software-recall-(1)-250.png

Chrysler is recalling 2019-2022 Ram 2500, 2019-2022 Ram 3500 Chassis Cab and 2021-2022 Dodge Durango vehicles because the anti-lock braking system (ABS) control module software may prevent the electronic stability control (ESC) warning light from illuminating.

More than 400,000 vehicles are involved in the recall because the vehicles fail to comply with federal safety standards.

"The vehicle must be equipped with a telltale that provides a warning to the driver of the occurrence of one or more malfunctions that affect the generation or transmission of control or response signals in the vehicle's electronic stability control system."

About 370,400 Chrysler vehicles are recalled in the U.S., and nearly 30,000 are recalled in Canada.

Fiat Chrysler dealers will update the ABS control module software once recall notices are mailed April 29, 2022.

U.S. Dodge and Ram owners may call 800-853-1403 and use recall reference number Z20.

In a separate recall, Chrysler says it is also recalling 1,451 Mopar anti-lock brake system control modules that dealers will either update, repurchase or replace.

Mercedes-Benz Metris vans recalled for risk of fires

mercedes-benz-metris-fuel-hose-recall-250.png

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 42,000 Metris vans over the risk of fires from fuel leaks.
The 2017-2022 Mercedes Metris vans may have problems with the upper and lower fuel hose connections.

Those hoses go to the engines, so loose connections can allow fuel to leak onto hot ignition sources.

U.S. federal regulators opened an investigation in March 2018 after owners filed complaints about fuel that leaked from the hoses in 2016 Mercedes Metris vans.

Mercedes couldn't find any problems, but the automaker decided to recall more than 12,000 model year 2016-2017 Metris vans to prevent fuel leaks from the lower connecting points of the hoses between the underbody fuel lines and the Schrader valves.

However, Metris owners continued to complain about fuel leaks and odors even though the vans had been repaired. Mercedes couldn't find anything to connect the complaints between 2017 and 2020, but the assembly plants included additional tests to verify the fuel hose clamps were secure.

Engineers also finally found these four problems during production.

  1. Fuel hose not fully advanced over the upper or lower fuel line connection
  2. Fuel hose clamp not positioned correctly over the fuel hose connection
  3. Fuel hose clamp not closed correctly
  4. Wrong fuel hose clamp mounted
But Metris owners continued to file complaints about fuel odors and leaks, although the automaker didn't receive any crash, injury or fire reports.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will repair the fuel hose connections and replace the fuel hoses and clamps once recall letters are mailed April 11, 2022.

Ford F-150 Windshield Wiper Motor Recall Affects 157,000 Trucks

A 2021 Ford F-150 windshield wiper motor recall involves more than 157,000 trucks because the wipers will fail when the motors fail.

Ford began receiving windshield wiper failure complaints in March 2021 and the wiper motor supplier said 12 motors had been returned in a three-month period.

The windshield wiper motors showed evidence of problems with the quality of the welds of the brush plates.

Ford and the supplier monitored the field as more wiper motor complaints were filed, but engineers couldn't find evidence of brush-plate welding problems.

But the supplier found loose magnets and nuts in the windshield wiper motors as more wiper motor reports were received.

There have been 758 warranty reports for windshield wiper motor failures on 2021 Ford F-150s as of February 14, 2022.

Ford announced the windshield wiper motor recall because it knows the motors will continue to fail. But the automaker says it hasn't received any crash or injury reports regarding windshield wiper failures.

Ford F-150 windshield wiper motor recall notices will be mailed April 18, 2022, and dealerships will replace the wiper motors.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans Recalled Over Torsion Bars

mercedes-sprinter-torsion-bar-recall-(2)-250.png

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 2,100 Sprinter vans that could go out of control when the torsion bars fail at the connections between the bars and the linkage components.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter torsion bar shims may not have been assembled correctly. It's the eighth recall of the 2021 Sprinter.

A supplier contacted Mercedes in June 2021 about assembly errors of the bolt connection between the torsion bar and torsion bar linkage, causing the automaker to quarantine the 2021 vans.

Mercedes engineers also opened an investigation and determined the shim on the torsion bar was incorrectly installed between the nut and the torsion bar, rather than between the ball stud and the torsion bar. Engineers also determined nothing will fail before about 25% of the required useful life of the vehicle.

Although the defect is dangerous, Mercedes says braking and steering remained fully functional even without the connection between the torsion bar linkage and the torsion bar.

A driver might notice metallic rattling noises from the affected bolt connection while driving. Mercedes dealers will fix the shim positions and replace the torsion bar linkages once Sprinter recall letters are mailed April 11, 2022.

Audi Recall Ordered For Inaccurate Fuel Level Readings

audi-fuel-level-sender-recall-250 (1).png

Nearly 46,000 Audi drivers may see inaccurate fuel levels displayed on the instrument panels due to stuck fuel level senders.

A recall is necessary to install new sensors in the fuel tanks of these Audi vehicles.
  • 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant
  • 2021 Audi RS 7
  • 2020-2021 Audi A6 allroad
  • 2020-2021 Audi S6 sedan
  • 2020-2021 Audi S7
  • 2019-2021 Audi A6 sedan
  • 2019-2021 Audi A7
According to Audi, the distance between the fuel level sender and a ventilation pipe in the tank may be too small and allow the fuel level sender to get stuck on the ventilation pipe.

This will cause a drop in the fuel level which won't be detected, leading to an incorrect fuel level and remaining range being displayed in the instrument cluster.

Audi customers began complaining of running out of gas in December 2020 even though the fuel levels indicated the tanks were still half full. Audi engineers and the suppliers opened an investigation which determined the fuel level senders could get stuck.

Audi continued to monitor the field because the automaker needed a better handle on the frequency of the fuel level sender issues. More claims arrived from the U.S. about stuck fuel level senders and incorrect fuel level readings.

But considering Audi drivers were running out of gas while driving, a clear safety problem, the automaker decided to order a worldwide recall of the vehicles.

As of March 11, 2022, Audi was aware of 115 warranty claims in the U.S. alone.

About the only sign a driver will have of a problem is if they notice an implausible remaining range since the last refueling or an implausible fuel gauge reading.

Audi recall letters are expected to be mailed May 13, 2022.

VW Recalls Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and Atlas FL SUVs

vw-atlas-door-harness-recall-250.png
A Volkswagen Atlas recall involves more than 246,000 SUVs that may suffer from frontal side airbag problems, and VW currently doesn't know how the problem will be repaired.

The recalled 2019-2020 VW Atlas, 2020-2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport and 2021-2023 VW Atlas FL SUVs may have door wiring harness electrical contacts that may corrode.

This can affect the electrical connections and delay the deployment of the driver or passenger front side airbags during side impacts.

Volkswagen was receiving complaints in 2020 and in 2021 engineers found "fretting corrosion" of the wiring as the number of complaints increased.

In February 2022, the U.S. government contacted VW about the increased complaints which convinced the automaker to announce the Atlas recall, "out of an abundance of caution."

According to Volkswagen, tiny movements of the wire harness (terminal A-pillar to front door) can cause damage to the wire terminal surface and result in fretting corrosion.

An Atlas driver may see an airbag warning light, experience the windows rolling down for no reason, inadvertent parking brake engagement at very slow speeds or they may receive a warning regarding a faulty door sensor.

About 23,000 of the recalled Atlas SUVs are in Canada.

Interim VW Atlas recall letters are expected to be mailed May 10, 2022, and second notices will be sent once the remedy becomes available.

Kia Cadenza Windshields May Loosen and Detach: Recall

A Kia Cadenza windshield recall has been announced after Kia received at least 24 customer complaints and 256 warranty claims about loose Cadenza windshields.

More than 30,300 windshields on the 2014-2016 Kia Cadenza cars need to be inspected and possibly removed and replaced.

Kia began receiving complaints from Kia Cadenza owners about loose windshields and determined the windshield bonding wasn't good enough, something that could allow the windshield to detach from the car.

Kia believes problems occurred at the assembly plant which resulted in a lack of primer and adhesion of the windshield glass to the body of the Cadenza. However, Kia says "the exact cause of this condition is unknown."

A Kia Cadenza driver may hear wind noise or notice water leaking from the windshield.

Ask Kia about reimbursement if you have paid your own money for previous windshield repairs.

Kia Cadenza windshield recall notices are expected to be mailed May 13, 2022. Kia dealers will possibly remove the windshields and reattach them with the proper amount of primer.

GM Headlight Recall Issued Over Low-Beam Glare

gm-headlight-recall-glare-250.png

A GM headlight recall over low-beam glare includes more than 740,000 model year 2010-2017 GMC Terrain SUVs after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration denied a petition from General Motors to skip the headlight recall.
General Motors says a reflection from the headlight housing may illuminate "excessively bright light" in areas above the Terrain and outside the view of the driver.

"A reflection caused by the headlamps’ housing can project a narrow beam of light 80 degrees outboard and 45 degrees upward of each lamp’s forward-center axis." — GM headlight recall
GM also says the design of the Terrain headlights allows a narrow beam of light from the lower beam light to reflect off the inner surface of the high-beam reflector. However, the high-beam headlights are not affected.

The headlight problem has been going on for years because it was in June 2019 when the automaker petitioned NHTSA for a recall exemption because only one GMC Terrain owner had complained.

That complaint didn't mention bright lights or glare, but the complainant said the headlights shined into the tops of trees.

GM also said the headlights hadn't caused any crashes or injuries even though the Terrain model years go back to 2010.

Early in March safety regulators denied GM's petition and told the automaker it should issue a GMC headlight recall for 2010-2017 Terrains.

According to GM, dealers aren't sure what they will do to repair the headlight problem, but headlight recall notices are expected to be mailed April 23, 2022.

VW Recalls Golf GTI and Golf R Vehicles After Several Fires

A 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R recall includes more than 4,200 vehicles that may suffer from loose engine design covers when performing high acceleration driving maneuvers.

What may not exactly sound like a dangerous problem could really cause a fire if the loose engine design cover touches the exhaust turbocharger and melts.

In September 2021, VW received a claim in Europe about an engine compartment fire but the damage was so severe engineers couldn't determine what caused the fire.

Then another European engine fire was reported, then more fire claims were received as VW tried to find the root cause.

In January 2022 VW was conducting driving tests and found it was possible for the engine design cover to come loose in certain driving and load conditions.

VW will mail Golf GTI and Golf R recall letters by May 13, 2022. Volkswagen dealers will remove the engine design covers but dealers don't currently have replacement engine design covers, so updated replacement covers will be provided later.

Mercedes Rear Turn Signals, Hazard and Backup Lights May Fail

mercedes-rear-signal-software-recall-250.png
Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 9,100 vehicles with rear turn signals, hazard lights and backup lights that may not work.

The recalled 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450, EQS 580 and 2021 Mercedes-Benz S500 and S580 vehicles may have rear signal software errors.

Mercedes drivers won't have any warning before the rear lights fail, but warning messages should illuminate once the lights fail.

Mercedes-Benz opened an investigation in January 2021 after internal tests showed problems with the rear signal software. Beginning in February 2021, Mercedes introduced new software during production and any vehicles still in the hands of Mercedes were reworked and repaired.

Engineers studied possible violations of regulations, but it took time "due to the complex nature of the system and affected components."

Mercedes is aware of 19 incidents and 12 warranty claims, but no reports of damages or injuries.

Audi Turbocharger Oil Strainer recall affects 26,000 vehicles

An Audi turbocharger oil strainer recall involves more than 26,000 of these vehicles.

  • 2013-2017 Audi A8
  • 2013-2017 Audi S6 Sedan
  • 2013-2017 Audi S7
  • 2013-2017 Audi S8
  • 2014-2017 Audi RS7
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation at the end of March 2021 after 58 complaints about Audi vehicles that suddenly stalled without warning while driving.
The vehicles are equipped with 4-liter twin-turbocharged engines, and several Audi owners complained the turbochargers failed and caused the stalled engines. Several complaints indicated the vehicles couldn't be restarted once they stalled.

The Audi turbochargers failed because they were starved of oil due to oil and carbon deposits contained in the engine oil which clogged the oil strainers located in the turbocharger oil supply lines in the engines. According to NHTSA, working on the vehicles is very difficult due to the location of the oil strainers.

Audi has issued multiple versions of technical service bulletin (TSB) 2044640 which instructs technicians how to replace the turbocharger once it has failed or is about to fail.

Audi says a blocked turbocharger oil strainer leads to a lack of lubrication of the turbocharger bearings and causes wear on the bearings. This can cause the turbine wheel of the turbocharger to contact the housing or may cause the turbocharger shaft to break.

Although Audi received at least 1,889 claims and 47 field reports in the U.S. related to turbocharger oil strainer replacements, the automaker says it didn't find much evidence of stalled engines. Tests showed turbo failures caused the engine to run rough, idle poorly and suffer long cranking times.

Audi also says a driver may see illuminated warning lights and the vehicle will store certain diagnostic trouble codes.

Audi initiated a warranty extension for 10 years/120,000 miles in February, but government safety concerns convinced Audi to announce a recall.

Audi is expected to mail recall notices May 20, 2022, and dealers will replace the oil strainers and change the oil.

Ford recalls Bronco Sports and Escapes following Engine Fires

ford-engine-oil-separator-recall-250.png
A Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape recall includes more than 345,000 SUVs equipped with 1.5L engines at risk of fires from oil leaks.

According to Ford, the 2020-2022 Escapes and 2021-2022 Bronco Sports have engine oil separator housings that may crack and develop oil leaks. Leaking oil that makes contact with a hot ignition source may cause an engine fire.

Ford says cracks at the edge of the oil separator housing can cause a loss of seal support which may lead to an oil leak between the oil separator and engine camshaft cover.

In July 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted Ford concerning an underhood fire in a 2021 Bronco Sport, then a week later another engine fire was reported in a 2021 Ford Escape.

Ford engineers investigated the underhood fires that caused extensive fire damage to the engine compartments. Engineers couldn't confirm a cause of the fires, but they did find evidence of oil leaks and severe fire damage at the upper rear parts of the engines.

Ford then discovered five additional engine compartment fires in 2020-2021 Escapes where leaks at the oil separators may have caused the fires. Additionally, Ford found 12 warranty claims for vehicles where the oil separators were replaced due to external oil leaks from cracks in the separator housings.

Ford says changes were made by the supplier and by Ford during vehicle production which caused the automaker to believe the problem was likely over and done with. But in February 2022 Ford learned about an engine fire in a 2021 Escape.

Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape drivers should watch for smoke coming from the engine compartments.

Ford recall letters will be mailed April 18, 2022, and dealers will check the oil separators for oil leaks or damage. Dealers may need to replace the oil separators and seals.

GM Windshield Wiper recall includes Equinox and Terrain

gm-windshield-wiper-recall-250.png
GM windshield wiper recall includes 2014-2015 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with ball joints in the windshield wiper modules that may corrode, causing one or both windshield wipers to fail.

More than 681,000 Equinox and Terrain SUVs are involved in the GM windshield wiper recall for dealerships to inspect and possibly replace the wiper modules.

According to GM, the ball joints in the windshield wiper modules may become extremely corroded to the point one or more ball joints separate from their sockets while the windshield wipers are in use.

Customers complained their wipers failed at the very time drivers needed them.

The General Motors wiper problem goes back to 2016 when the automaker announced a windshield wiper recall for 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs. More than 367,800 vehicles were recalled, but only for model year 2013.

Hundreds of Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain owners continued to complain about wiper failures which caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open an investigation in November 2018.

Safety regulators said they saw evidence GM should have included additional Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain model years in the 2016 recall.

That investigation was upgraded in 2019 after NHTSA learned of 1,900 complaints about windshield wiper failures.
