Tesla recalls model S and Model X vehicles over Airbags

Tesla is recalling about 7,600 model year 2021 Model X and Model S vehicles because the driver's airbag cushions may tear when the airbags deploy.

The driver's airbags were manufactured in Mexico, but in July the supplier noticed a torn airbag during quality testing, stopping airbag shipments while an investigation commenced.

The next month another airbag tear occurred during testing:

"The supplier and Tesla conducted further investigative analysis and testing and identified a specific location on the airbag in which to reinforce the cushion fabric to make it more robust to variability in the cover door and prevent tearing if the airbag caught the cover door during deployment. The supplier implemented this additional manufacturing countermeasure on September 9, 2021."

Tesla says the affected airbags were built between June 29, 2021, and September 8, 2021.

The automaker also says it is not aware of any injury, warranty claims or customer complaints related to the airbags.

Tesla technicians will replace the driver's airbags after recall notices are mailed January 7, 2022.

Toyota power steering recall includes Sequoia and Tundra

A Toyota power steering recall involves 2021 Toyota Tundra and 2021-2022 Toyota Sequoia vehicles to prevent power steering fluid leaks. The Toyota Sequoia and Tundra recall includes about 22,000 vehicles in the U.S. and about 1,194 vehicles in Canada.

The Tundra and Sequoia vehicles may have manufacturing errors with the power steering gear assemblies that can cause a loss of power steering fluid. Power steering will be suddenly lost if enough power steering fluid leaks out, but manual steering will remain. The Toyota steering wheels will become more difficult to turn if power steering fails, a problem that is more dangerous when driving slow speeds.

Model year 2021 Toyota Tundra and 2021-2022 Toyota Sequoia owners will be contacted in January 2022 about the recall. Toyota dealerships will inspect and possibly replace the power steering gear assemblies.

Toyota didn't announce more recall details and the government hasn't published information about the power steering recall, but concerned owners may call 800-331-4331.

KIA Carnival recall issued for sliding door problems

2022-kia-carnival-sliding-door-recall-250.png

A 2022 Kia Carnival recall includes about 3,000 minivans with remote controller assemblies for the passenger-side power sliding doors that may malfunction, preventing the doors from latching.
According to Kia, certain plastic holders inside the release actuator within the passenger-side power sliding door remote controller assembly may have been manufactured out of specification.

The drum and holder can bind and cause the latch to stick in the open position.

In November, Kia learned about Carnival sliding door complaints coming from South Korea, a problem considering the minivans are new 2022 models.

Kia says it's aware of two warranty claims, two customer complaints and one techline case. However, there have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to the sliding door problems.

A Carnival driver may hear four chimes and see a door-ajar warning when the power sliding door doesn't close properly. The warnings can occur with the Carnival parked or in motion.

If the driver ignores the warnings and drives the Kia minivan in this condition at speeds higher than 6 mph, an additional continuous door-ajar ringing sound will occur. Additionally, the door-ajar warning remains illuminated with an additional flashing red graphic.

The automaker says the Carnival minivans were built July 21 to October 26, 2021.

Kia Carnival recall notices will be mailed December 16, 2021. Kia dealerships will replace the passenger-side power sliding door release actuator drums and holders inside the remote controller assemblies.

BMW EGR cooler recall issued after engine fires

bmw-egr-cooler-recall-2021-250.png

A BMW EGR cooler recall includes more than 50,000 of these vehicles which were previously recalled in 2018 due to intake manifold fires.

  • 2013-2018 BMW 328d
  • 2013-2018 BMW 328d BMW xDrive
  • 2014-2018 BMW 328d Sports Wagon
  • 2014-2018 BMW 328d xDrive Sports Wagon
  • 2014-2016 BMW 535d
  • 2014-2016 BMW 535d xDrive
  • 2015 BMW 740Ld xDrive
  • 2015-2017 BMW X3 xDrive28d SAV
  • 2014-2017 BMW X5 xDrive35d SAV
The diesel vehicles are equipped with exhaust gas recirculation modules with coolers that could leak and allow coolant to mix with diesel engine soot. The burning particles can then melt the intake manifolds and cause fires.

It's a problem BMW faced before when in 2018 the automaker recalled about 1.6 million diesel vehicles worldwide.

The BMW EGR cooler issue has went on for years in several countries, including in South Korea which had banned certain BMW models after reports of 40 vehicle fires.

Hundreds of thousands of BMW vehicles had also allegedly been repaired during a technical campaign throughout Asian and European countries, but those vehicles were re-repaired in the 2018 EGR cooler recall.

BMW monitored the field following the 2018 EGR cooler recall and determined the replacement parts weren't good enough after "thermal events" occurred on vehicles that had been repaired.

According to BMW EGR cooler recall documents, prior to an engine compartment fire a driver may see a warning symbol in the instrument cluster about a loss of engine coolant. Additionally, a driver may notice a reduction in engine power, an exhaust gas smell or hear an unusual noise from the engine compartment.

BMW says it hasn't received any reports of crashes or injuries, but it didn't announce how many fires have occurred.

BMW dealers will replace the EGR coolers, the intake manifolds will be checked and replaced if necessary and the EGR pipes connecting the coolers to the manifolds will be cleaned.

An owner who has replaced the EGR cooler at their own expense prior to the recall may be eligible for reimbursement.

BMW EGR cooler recall notices will be mailed January 12, 2022, and any previously recalled vehicles will need the new repairs.

Ford recalls Bronco Sports and Escapes for brake issues

ford-bronco-sport-escape-recall-(1)-250.png

Ford is recalling more than 124,000 Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles because the rear brake linings may not have been manufactured correctly.
Affected by the recall are model year 2021-2022 Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted Ford regarding a 2021 Bronco Sport compliance audit on the vehicle equipped with a brake vacuum pump. The test was conducted for stopping distance and exceeded federal regulations.

The 2021-2022 Ford Escape shares the same brake system with the Bronco Sport, with some Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles equipped with brake vacuum boosters, and some equipped with electronic brake boosters.

However, vehicles with electronic brake boosters are not affected by the recall because they have higher system pressures if the boosters malfunction.

The Ford vehicles may have rear brake linings that have "a friction coefficient that is outside of the specified tolerances. These vehicles are equipped with a brake vacuum booster without a vacuum sensor. The vacuum sensor compensated for variation in brake pad friction performance."

Ford says if one of the recalled vehicles experiences a brake booster malfunction, the driver may find it harder to use the brake pedal, and the vehicle will suffer from increased stopping distances.

Ford says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

The Ford Bronco Sport and Escape recall involves 115,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 9,000 in Canada.

Ford is still investigating the problem and doesn't exactly know how dealers will repair the vehicles. However, Ford plans on replacing the front and/or rear brake linings with better parts.

Honda hood latch recall for striker problems

honda-hood-latch-recall-250.png

A Honda hood latch recall for striker problems includes more than 776,000 Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline vehicles with hoods that may open while driving.
The hood latch striker recall includes 2019 Honda Passport, 2016-2019 Honda Pilot and 2017-2020 Honda Ridgeline vehicles that may have hood latch strikers that become damaged and separate from the hoods.

Trying to drive with the hood blocking the windshield may not be the safest driving scenario.

Honda engineers determined gaps in the front seal between the hood and grill allow air to create noises and vibrations. But the vibrations can cause stress fractures along the hood latch striker and cause the hood latch striker to separate from the hood.

Honda found stress fractures on hood latch strikers in July 2016 during testing of a Honda Ridgeline.

"After adhesive was applied to a prototype vehicle’s hood latch striker, the vehicle passed durability testing; thereafter, adhesive was applied to the hood latch striker in mass production of similarly designed vehicles as a quality improvement effort." — Honda hood latch recall documents
Then in 2017 Honda opened a hood investigation because of loose hoods that vibrated and made noise, problems that caused the automaker to issue technical service bulletin (TSB) 17-083 to address hood vibration and loose hoods by adjusting the hood alignments.

But in February 2019, corrosion was found in the engine compartment during corrosion testing of a Passport. Honda engineers said the problem was due to gaps between the hood and grill.

Honda made changes during production of the Passport and Pilot to ensure hood latch height and to make sure the front seal between the hood and grill was set to specification.

However, Honda again opened a hood latch investigation because of vibrations, noises and stress fractures in the strikers, finding hood latch striker separations in the field.

Engineers tore into all the past quality improvement efforts made during production and determined the parts simply weren't strong enough.

As of November 19, 2021, Honda has received 116 warranty claims but no reports of crashes or injuries related to the hood latch problems.

The Honda hood latch striker recall includes 724,826 vehicles in the U.S., and about 51,325 vehicles are recalled in Canada.

Honda Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline owners must be aware of loose hoods or noise coming from the hoods.

Honda hood latch recall notices are expected to be mailed January 17, 2022, and dealers will repair the hood latch strikers and hoods, or possibly replace the hoods.

Audi recalls Q5 and SQ5 for power problems

Nearly 289,000 Audi vehicles are recalled because they may suffer from reduced engine power.

Recalled are 2021-2022 Audi Q5 Sportback, SQ5 Sportback, 2018-2022 Audi Q5 and SQ5 vehicles with gateway control modules that may shut down.

This can happen if liquid is spilled in the rear seat or if water enters from a faulty body seam underneath the vehicle.

The gateway control module has a safety feature that causes it to shut down if liquid is spilled in the rear seats, but Audi says the faulty underbody seam can also allow rain water to damage the module.

Audi says liquid can cause internal errors from short circuits inside the control unit, and the module will switch off when faulty signals are detected.

The Audi engine will enter emergency mode with reduced power, but the vehicle allegedly remains steerable and the brakes remain functional.

Audi recall letters are expected to be mailed February 24, 2022, and Audi dealers are expected to install protective covers on the gateway control modules. Additionally, dealers will seal the underbody seams if needed.

Hyundai Ioniq uninteded acceleration causes recall

A Hyundai Ioniq unintended acceleration incident has caused a recall of more than 5,900 model year 2017-2019 Ioniq electric vehicles.

Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicles may suffer from reduced power, reduced acceleration or possibly unintended acceleration due to unstable electrical grounds that cause the vehicles to enter fail-safe modes.
The unintended acceleration can occur once the vehicle is in fail-safe mode and after a driver releases the accelerator pedal.

In June, Hyundai learned about a Korean media report regarding an Ioniq unintended acceleration incident. The automaker opened an investigation and engineers found vehicle data that indicated an unstable electrical ground may have caused electrical noise to flow abnormally.

This triggered a fail-safe mode which can cause acceleration problems.

Hyundai says unintended acceleration can occur under specific circumstances.

"The sequence steps being (1) the accelerator pedal is rapidly cycled at the moment the “fail-safe” mode is initially engaged, (2) followed by a sustained period of 100% accelerator pedal application and lastly (3) an abrupt release of the accelerator pedal. The braking and steering systems are fully functional during the “fail-safe” mode."
A driver will see a flashing EV Ready light if the Ioniq enters fail-safe mode.

The U.S. Hyundai Ioniq recall includes 2,679 vehicles and a Canadian recall involves 3,236 vehicles.

Hyundai says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the acceleration issues.

Hyundai is expected to mail Ioniq recall notices February 4, 2022, and dealers will need to update the electric power control units.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L headlight failures cause recall

Jeep Grand Cherokee L headlight failures have caused a recall of more than 38,000 model year 2021 SUVs equipped with smart lighting modules.

Chrysler says an incomplete software update may cause one or both headlights to suddenly fail.

Chrysler learned about the headlight failures and incomplete software updates in November.

The vehicles were built between December 3, 2020, when the first vehicle was built with modules that may have received incomplete software updates, and ended on July 27, 2021.

Nearly 1,300 of the Jeeps are recalled in Canada.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L recall notices will be mailed January 28, 2022. Jeep dealers will reprogram the smart lighting modules to keep the headlights working.

Owners of 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles who want to learn more can call 800-853-1403. The Jeep recall number is Y72.

This is the fourth recall in three months for 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs, including a previous headlight recall.

Jeep Wrangler 4XE SUVs recalled over odometer failures

2021-jeep-wrangler-4xe-odometer-recall-250.png

A Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall includes more than 3,600 Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) equipped with odometers that can fail at 13,342 miles (21,473 kilometers).
Chrysler says the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe mileage display problem violates federal safety standards and will leave a driver guessing how many miles are on the vehicle.

"Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard ("FMVSS") 571.101, Controls and Displays, Section 4, defines the odometer as an indicator that must display the magnitude of its sensed characteristic, which is defined under Safety Act 49 USC 32702 Definitions, as the distance driven. After reaching 13,342 miles the odometers of these vehicles will no longer display the magnitude of its sensed characteristic (mileage)."
A Jeep Wrangler 4xe driver will easily see a failed odometer because the mileage display will only show two dashes but no numbers.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall includes about 734 SUVs in Canada.

Jeep dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software on vehicles with less than 13,342 miles (21,473 kilometers), but the Wrangler instrument panel will be replaced if the mileage isn't displayed.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall letters will be mailed January 28, 2022, but customers with concerns may call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about recall number Y94.

2021–2022 Ford F-150 Pickups Recalled over Potential Driveshaft Damage

all-new-f-150-003-jpg-1640272370.jpg
Ford will recall 184,698 of its 2021 and 2022 model F-150 pickups to address a problem with two underbody acoustic/thermal insulators. These could loosen and come into contact with the truck's aluminum driveshaft and damage or even fracture it, Ford said. The problem affects 4x4 SuperCrew models with the 145-inch wheelbase and the optional sound insulation package, and Ford estimates only 10 percent of the recalled trucks will have the defect. No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the issue, which Ford started investigating in July.

Owners can look for signs of trouble including a loose insulator under the vehicle or a "rattling, clicking, or clunking noise" that indicates an insulator touching the driveshaft. Ford stopped making trucks with the offending insulator by mid-November, according to the recall report filed with NHTSA.

Ford has started notifying dealers and will send letters to owners of the recalled trucks beginning January 31. In the meantime, owners can check with the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected.

Nissan Rogue fuel pump recall issued after engines stalled

nissan-rogue-fuel-pump-recall-250.png

A Nissan Rogue fuel pump recall has been issued for nearly 27,000 model year 2021 Rogue SUVs because the fuel pumps can overheat and fail.

A failed fuel pump will cause the Rogue engine to stall, and a driver won't be able to restart the vehicle.
A Nissan Rogue owner won't know of a problem until the fuel pump fails.

Nissan says an assembly problem at the supplier (TI Automotive Japan Gunma) can cause the fuel pumps to experience abnormal wear between the fuel pump brush and commutator.

This can lead to excessive heat levels, melted components and failed Rogue fuel pumps.

Nissan learned in March about field reports that said Rogue fuel pumps were failing and causing illuminated warning lights and stalled engines.

Nissan opened an investigation to collect the returned fuel pumps for testing to determine how and why the pumps failed. The automaker also found 87 Rogue warranty claims alleging the engines stalled while driving in a seven-month period.

The supplier finally determined operator error on the fuel pump assembly line caused the problem. Nissan also determined no crashes or injuries have been reported related to the fuel pumps.

The Nissan Rogue fuel pump recall includes nearly 2,200 SUVs in Canada.

Nissan dealers will replace the Rogue fuel pump assemblies once recall notices are mailed January 26, 2022.
