Ford recalls nearly 42K F250 and F350 Super Duty trucks over concern with rear axle shaft

A Ford rear axle shaft recall affects about 41,500 model year 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty and 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty trucks. The recalled trucks are equipped with single rear wheels and 10.5-inch rear axle shafts.

According to Ford, the left rear axle shaft may break due to improper electromagnetic induction heat treatment during manufacturing. A busted rear axle shaft can cause a truck to stop moving and could allow it to roll away if the parking brake isn't engaged when parking the truck.

A Kentucky truck plant found the problem through warranty claims, and engineers determined the axle shafts were not manufactured according to Ford's specifications. Ford learned each of the warranty returned parts had fractured at about 44 mm from the flange.

Engineers discovered the failed components were limited to "one induction heat machine where maintenance personnel entered an incorrect offset value for the 10.5-inch left rear axle shaft. This incorrect value led to the incomplete induction heat treating process."

If the truck is equipped with four-wheel-drive (4WD), a customer can place the vehicle into 4WD to get the truck moving. Ford says it is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries.

Ford axle shaft recall letters will be mailed October 16, 2023. Ford dealers will look for certain date codes and replace affected rear axle shafts.

Ford 360-Degree Rearview camera recall anncounced

A Ford rearview camera recall has been announced for dealerships to replace the 360-degree rearview cameras in about 170,000 of these vehicles.

  • 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2022-2023 Ford Transit
  • 2021 Ford Bronco
The backup cameras may not display any rearview images when the vehicles are shifted into REVERSE. Instead, a driver may see a black or blue screen. Between April 24, 2018, and August 3, 2023, there were 3,486 warranty reports regarding rearview camera failures, two alleged crashes but no reports of injuries.

In September 2021, Ford recalled the Explorer, Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln Corsair for rearview camera failures, and in January 2023 the same vehicles were recalled again. Owners reported their backup camera images were blue or black even though the vehicles had been repaired.

Then in May, Ford recalled more than 422,000 Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln Corsair vehicles due to problems with the 360-degree rearview cameras. This latest recall includes models not previously recalled.

Ford's engineers now believe the backup camera failures can occur due to the image processing module software. In addition, there can be problems with the camera hardware and the wiring retention.

Ford expects to mail rearview camera recall letters October 2, 2023.

Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 recalled over Turn Signals

A Subaru turn signal recall has been issued for about 9,000 model year 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 cars. Both models were jointly created by Toyota and Subaru, with the Toyota GR86 built by Subaru. The rear turn signals may work part of the time and fail part of the time.

Subaru received a report in December 2021 about the rapid blinking of the turn signal indicator. Subaru began a joint investigation with supplier and in February 2023 received an inquiry from Transport Canada.

That report said a customer noticed the rear turn signals failed when exposed to intense direct sunlight. This was followed by an inquiry from U.S. safety regulators regarding turn signal failures.

Testing indicates the condition isn't very common but could indeed occur. As of August 24, Subaru was aware of two field reports and two warranty claims. However, there are no crash or injury reports relating to the turn signals.

Dealers will replace both rear combination tail light assemblies once dealers have the replacement parts. Interim recall letters will be mailed October 29, 2023, and second notices will be mailed when dealers are ready to repair the vehicles.

VW Jetta Ignition Switch recall: 2,654 Warranty Claims

Volkswagen Jetta ignition switch problems caused VW to announce a recall of about 48,000 cars equipped with conventional ignition switches.

The 2019-2020 VW Jetta ignition switch may fail, especially in high temperature environments. A failed polyfuse can cause the engine to stall and the electrical system can shut down. Engineers are still trying to determine the root cause of the problem, but a Jetta driver may receive warning of a problem.

According to VW, there are two warnings that will appear in the instrument cluster: "Ignition switch off, safely stop the vehicle," and "Starter system faulty, please service vehicle."

Volkswagen discovered the problem during routine monitoring of the field when a Jetta ignition switch failed. VW continued to monitor the field and saw a "large number of field claims" regarding failed Jetta ignition switches. That "large number" refers to 2,654 warranty claims filed between August 2019 and August 2023.

VW Jetta ignition switch recall letters are expected to be mailed October 27, 2023. Volkswagen dealerships will replace the ignition switches.

Toyota recalls 21K Tundra and Tundra hybrid vehicles

Toyota announced Wednesday that the auto maker is conducting a non-compliance safety recall involving certain 2023 model year Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles in the United States. Approximately 21,780 vehicles are involved in this recall.

The problem stems from system errors, specifically in vehicles equipped with a Toyota Genuine spray-on bed liner accessory. These vehicles may have been provided with a load-carrying-capacity modification label that does not adhere to federal standards. When a vehicle exceeds its designated load-carrying capacity, it can potentially heighten the risk of an accident.

To address this issue, Toyota will take corrective action for all affected vehicles. Toyota dealerships will replace the non-compliant load carrying capacity modification label with an updated one, and owners will not incur any expenses for this service. Toyota aims to notify all impacted customers by mid-November 2023.

Nissan Altima and Sentra Sedans recalled to fix broken backup Cameras

A Nissan backup camera recall has been issued for more than 168,000 Nissan Altima and Nissan Sentra vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.

The recalled 2019-2021 Altima and 2020-2021 Sentra rearview camera harnesses may be damaged. The rearview camera harness can become damaged from vibrations during driving due to the design and routing of the harness.

The damage can cause the backup camera display image to distort or completely fail. Nearly 15,000 of the Nissan vehicles are recalled in Canada.

Nissan dealerships will inspect the cameras and harnesses and replace them if necessary once recall notices are mailed October 19, 2023.

However, Nissan dealers will apply protective tape and reroute the rearview camera harnesses if no damage is found.

Kia recalls 18,000 Stingers over bad Fuel Pump

A Kia Stinger recall involves more than 18,200 cars equipped with fuel pumps that may fail. Kia says the 2018-2021 Stinger high-pressure fuel pumps have fuel control valve plungers that may stick.

This can cause the Kia Stinger to lose drive power from over-pressurization of the pump. The Kia Stinger fuel pump issue was discovered in May during a routine review which found an increase in replacement claims for the high-pressure 2018-2021 Stinger fuel pumps.

Kia collected failed fuel pumps and found "vehicle hesitation followed by ability to accelerate with 2,000 RPM engine speed limitation noted. Loss of motive power while driving at highway speed could not be duplicated."

Later, engineers did confirm a loss of motive power could occur while driving at highway speeds. A Stinger driver may notice an illuminated Check Engine Light if the fuel pump problem occurs.

Kia Stinger fuel pump recall letters will be mailed November 10, 2023. Kia dealers will update the software logic of the engine control units to prevent power loss if the fuel pumps have trouble while driving. In addition, the fuel pumps will be inspected and possibly replaced.

Owners should ask about reimbursements if they paid for fuel pump repairs or replacements.

New Mercedes GLC 300 recalled over incorrectly manufactured front Tow Eye Receiver

More than 12,000 model year 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 SUVs are recalled because they may need new front crossmembers. According to Mercedes, the GLC300 front tow eye may not be properly threaded to the crossmember and can detach during towing.

At the beginning of April 2023, Mercedes launched investigations based on reports of tow eyes which could not be seated correctly. Mercedes and the supplier saw a need to recall the vehicles. However, there are no warranty claims, field reports or injuries caused by the problem.

The automaker says a driver will have no warning of a problem. Mercedes recall letters will be mailed November 10, 2023, and dealers will check to see if the front crossmembers need to be replaced.
