Michelin recall involves 620,000 Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires

A Michelin recall involves about 620,000 Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires labeled as snow tires. However, the Michelin recall was announced because the Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires may not have enough traction to handle snowy conditions.

The tires have DOT codes 0117 through 1423, and all are marked with the Alpine symbol to indicate they are snow tires with certain traction requirements. But Michelin says the tires do not comply with federal safety standards for tires with Alpine symbols.

Michelin discovered the traction problem while tests were conducted as part of plans to move some tire production of the Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires from Europe to the U.S. During the development of the tire line in Europe in 2017, testing was conducted to qualify the tire for the Alpine symbol for Europe, the U.S. and Canada.

In November 2022, Michelin found problems after performing snow testing at two locations as part of transferring production of the Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires. At this same time Michelin learned European certification tests were performed at the wrong tire pressure.

Michelin knows all the tires will be replaced, but the company doesn't know when replacement tires will be available. Interim Michelin recall letters will be mailed June 12, 2023. Owners will receive second tire recall notices once dealers have replacement tires.

GM Recalls Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD after Fires

GM trucks may have brake pressure sensor problems that can cause fires while the trucks are in motion or parked. General Motors has recalled 2019-2023 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD trucks, and owners are warned to park outside and away from flammable objects.

More than 40,000 trucks are recalled because the brake pressure sensor assemblies can leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch. GM found this will cause a short-circuit which can cause fires.

GM opened an investigation in August 2022 following a claim of a vehicle fire on a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado trucks. GM worked with Navistar which manufactured the trucks and looked into warranty claims for the brake pressure sensors.

Engineers were unable to replicate the problem, but in January 2023 a returned sensor and harness showed signs of heat damage. Several tests, including x-rays, showed brake fluid that went past the diaphragm seal and into the brake pressure switch and through the wire harness into the pump’s fuse circuit.

It was also determined there was delamination of the sealant used to protect against corrosion which allowed slow seepage of the brake fluid past the diaphragm seal. General Motors says it is aware of 21 complaints, 11 which allege flames, smoke or fires. However, there are no crash or injuries reports regarding the sensors and harnesses.

GM dealers are not ready to repair the trucks, so interim recall letters will be mailed at the end of May 2023, and second recall letters will be mailed once GM dealers have the required parts. Dealers will replace the master cylinder pressure sensors, and if needed the wire harnesses will also be replaced.

Ford recalls 2004-2006 Rangers to replace Airbags

A Ford Ranger airbag recall involves about 232,000 trucks that previously received front passenger airbag inflator replacements. But 2004-2006 Ford Ranger owners will have to go through all of it again because Ford says the replacement inflators may not have been installed properly.

Ford opened an investigation into reports of airbags that weren't installed correctly in previously recalled trucks. Ford says there were detailed work instructions and diagrams for proper airbag inflator installation.

According to Ford, a third-party mobile repair team discovered an incorrectly installed airbag inflator while working on a Ranger. In this case, the frontal passenger airbag inflator had been replaced but the new inflator was incorrectly installed.

Ford also found two trucks that contained airbag inflators that weren't correctly installed. Ford says it has improved its communications with dealerships and the automaker told workers the importance of following service instructions.

As of February 6, 2023, seven vehicles with incorrect inflator orientation have been found, but there are no warranty or field reports and no crash or injury reports. Ford Ranger airbag recall letters will be mailed May 22, 2023. Dealers will inspect and reinstall the front passenger airbag inflators as necessary.

Jeep Cherokee rollaway risk leads to recall from FCA

A Jeep Cherokee recall is necessary for 37,500 vehicles to prevent them from rolling away. The 2016-2017 Jeep Cherokees have two-speed power transfer units that may become damaged and disengage the transmissions and differentials.

This will cause a loss of drive power and a loss of the PARK function. This recall expands a Jeep Cherokee recall in 2020. According to Fiat Chrysler, the two-speed power transfer unit allows relative movement between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft.

If the defect occurs, "torque cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of motive power while the vehicle is in motion in two-wheel drive mode and a loss of the PARK function while stationary." In March 2023, FCA opened an investigation into 2016-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles that experienced a loss of motive power and/or PARK functions.

As of April 20, 2023, Chrysler was aware of two customer assistance records, 17 warranty claims, zero field reports and six other service records.

The software update by a dealer will allegedly maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in PARK by activating the electric parking brake if a failed input spline occurs.

Ford recalls over 175,000 vehicles due to seatbelt issue

Ford Bronco front seat belt problems have caused a recall of more than 175,000 Broncos with 5-door body styles. The 2021-2023 Broncos have front seat belt latch plates which may be difficult to access from their stowed positions. The government contacted Ford in May about a 2023 Bronco 5-door vehicle that had problems with the front seat belt latch.

Ford says a Bronco occupant could "experience some dissatisfaction or be discouraged if they are unable to easily access the seat belt latch in its stowed position.

In addition to causing problems for drivers and their passengers, the seat belt problem also violates federal safety standards. As of May 10, 2023, Ford is not aware of any warranty or field reports, or crashes or injuries related to the seat belt latch plates.

Ford Bronco recall letters will be mailed June 30, 2023. Ford dealers will add a sliding clip latch stop to the driver and front passenger seat belts.

Toyota recalls 96K Corolla Cross SUVs..

A Toyota Corolla Cross recall involves nearly 110,000 non-hybrid SUVs, and Toyota warns not to allow anyone to sit in the passenger seats until the Corolla Cross SUVs are repaired. The recalled 2022-2023 Corolla Cross SUVs have passenger airbags that may not deploy properly.

Toyota says the Corolla Cross vehicles may have manufacturing errors in the instrument panels where the airbags are located. About 96,000 Toyota Corolla Cross SUVs are recalled in the U.S., and more than 13,800 are recalled in Canada.

Toyota didn't provide many details about the recall, but Corolla Cross owners should watch for recall letters in late-July. Toyota dealers will inspect and possibly replace the Corolla Cross instrument panels. Again, please do not allow anyone to sit in the front passenger seat until a dealer has inspected the vehicle.

Land Rover Recalls Nearly 30,000 Cars Due to Keyless Entry Bug

A 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery recall has been announced for 30,000 vehicles because of problems with the UniLatch Keyless Vehicle door latch systems. The system could fail to latch the rear doors and allow the doors to open while driving. Land Rover says the instrument panel open-door warning light may also fail.

Land Rover opened an investigation in January 2020 following reports of rear doors opening while driving. In May 2020, engineers confirmed the Discovery rear door latch sealing system could allow "a water flow path into an area where it could enter the rear door latch and into the Keyless Vehicle (fast-latch) actuator housing."

The water caused the motor bearings to corrode because the system was not designed for moisture. Land Rover also found the rear door can appear to be secured when it is not. The automaker has some experience with door latch recalls because 2013-2016 Range Rovers and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sports were recalled over the door latch problems in 2015.

However, the government opened an investigation when Land Rover owners kept complaining about the door latches. Then in June 2019, another Land Rover door latch recall was announced, followed by another door latch recall.

But then in July 2020 another Range Rover door latch recall was issued. Regarding this latest door latch ecall, Land Rover will mail Discovery recall letters July 28, 2023.

Apparently Land Rover gave up trying to fix the door latch problems because this time dealers will fix the problem by disabling the UniLatch Keyless Vehicle entry functions.

Mercedes-EQ vehicles recalled over Propulsion Loss

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 8,200 vehicles because they could suddenly stop moving forward. The recalled 2022-2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450, 2022-2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS, 2022-2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 and 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG EQE vehicles may have software errors in the electric drivetrains that can cause a loss of drive power.

According to Mercedes, "the electric drivetrain software may improperly respond in the event of a detected fault at a specific plug connector within the electric drive." A driver won't receive a warning before the problem occurs, but once it does occur multiple warning messages will be displayed to the driver.

Mercedes-Benz opened an investigation in October 2022 after a vehicle experienced electric drivetrain problems that caused a loss of propulsion. But the automaker says there have been no injuries or other damage caused by the drivetrain problem.

Recall letters are expected to be mailed August 4, 2023, and Mercedes dealerships will update the electric drivetrain software.

Honda recalls 1.2 million U.S. vehicles over faulty backup camera

A Honda backup camera image recall involves about 1.2 million vehicles after Honda received about 274,000 warranty claims regarding blank rearview camera display screens.

Recalled are 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2022 Honda Pilot and 2019-2023 Honda Passport minivans and SUVs due to faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable connectors. A black or blank backup camera display violates federal safety standards.

According to Honda, the communication coaxial cable was not designed and manufactured properly which caused deformed terminals. The deformed cables can cause poor or lost connections between the audio display unit and the vehicle cable connector. The Honda rearview camera will fail when the vehicle is in REVERSE if communication is lost for more than 20 seconds.

The backup camera problem came up in February 2019 when Honda saw a potential trend of audio problems and flickering display screens. An investigation was opened and the media oriented systems transport terminal supplier began to adjust the terminals and cable length to improve the connection.

In January 2021, Honda extended the warranties to the affected vehicles, and in February 2021 Honda began using waterproof couplers for the connection problems. Honda owners who paid to have these repairs performed should ask Honda about reimbursement.

Honda expects to mail backup camera image recall letters July 24, 2023. Then Honda dealers will replace the MOST cable harnesses and install straightening covers over the vehicle cable connectors.

BMW iX xDrive50, iX M60 recalled for Cruise Control problem

BMW of North America has issued a recall for approximately 11,180 iX xDrive50 and iX M60 electric SUVs because of a potential safety concern involving the cruise control.

According to BMW, when turning the steering wheel at low speed, the driver is at risk of inadvertently contacting the cruise control button. This complication could lead to unexpected acceleration or deceleration, although the cruise control icon will become visible and the driver can deactivate the system by either braking or pressing the cruise control on/off button.

BMW will begin notifying vehicle owners in July about the need for a software update. In the meantime, iX owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is included in the recall.

Ford Fusion Energi PHEV recalled over increased Fire risk from damaged Control Module

A Ford Fusion Energi recall covers about 14,500 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) at risk of losing power or catching fire.Ford is warning car owners not to charge the hybrids until they are repaired.

The recalled 2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi hybrids are equipped with battery energy control modules. Those modules can become damaged from too much voltage and current flow. A car can lose its drive power and possibly catch fire, something that has occurred at least seven times.

In July 2022, Ford learned about five reports of Fusion Energi fires that occurred in the trunk areas on 2019 Fusion Energi hybrid cars equipped with 30Ah high-voltage batteries.

All the fires occurred in the U.S., and all the fires occurred between March and May 2022. And all five Fusion Energi fires occurred while the hybrids were at dealerships for battery energy control module replacements. The dealers were servicing the modules to fix one or more voltage sense "diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), a check engine light, no start, or loss of motive power concern."

It was determined the fires began in the modules, so the high-voltage batteries were sent to the supplier for testing. The supplier confirmed certain issues, but no root cause of the problem was found.

Ford issued a technical service bulletin to dealers in February 2023 which told technicians to replace the high-voltage battery if vehicles came in for service with one or more voltage sense DTCs rather than only replacing the modules.

In May, Ford was monitoring the Fusion hybrid problem and learned about two additional Fusion Energi fires, and both occurred while driving. Ford is aware of seven confirmed Fusion Energi fires, 270 warranty claims, but no reports of crashes or injuries. If a Ford Fusion hybrid begins having trouble, Ford says a driver may receive a "stop safely now" message before the car loses power.

Ford doesn't know how dealerships will fix the problems, so interim recall letters are expected to be mailed July 10, 2023. Second Ford Fusion Energi recall letters will be sent once dealers are ready to perform repairs. Ford engineers are working on finding a root cause of the problem.

Ford says to refrain from charging your Fusion Energi, "to maintain a lower charge level in the high-voltage battery, reducing the risk of a loss of motive power and vehicle fire until a remedy is available."

Mercedes-Benz Fuel Pump issue prompts recall, 143k vehicles affected

A Mercedes-Benz fuel pump recall involves more than 162,000 vehicles equipped with fuel pumps that fail, something Mercedes dealers will fix by replacing the fuel pumps.

The fuel pump recall includes 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLS, SL, GT, GLC, GLE, GLS and G-Class vehicles. Putting it another way, Mercedes says these Class vehicles are recalled.

  • 2021-2023 Mercedes GLE/GLS-Class (167 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes C-Class (205, 206 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes E-Class (213 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes S-Class (223 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes SL-Class (232 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes E-Class Coupe / Convertible (238 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes GLC-Class (253 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes CLS-Class (257 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes AMG GT 4-door Coupe (290 platform)
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes G-Class (463 platform)
About 18,500 of the Mercedes vehicles are recalled in Canada.

According to the automaker, the Hyundam Industrial fuel pumps have problems with the impellers that do not meet specifications. The fuel pump impeller can deform and make contact with the fuel pump housing, shutting down the pump. The cause of the problem is blamed on a sub-supplier, and a driver may know of a problem if a warning message appears and if the engine is not running normally.

Mercedes and the supplier investigated the problem and collected fuel pumps, finding an "irregularity in individual raw material batches used for the suspect fuel pump impellers, sourced from a sub-supplier." Mercedes-Benz says it received more than 2,000 fuel pump warranty claims in the U.S. between August 2021 and May 2023.

However, the automaker says it is not aware of any claims of injuries, crashes or deaths worldwide.

Nearly 125,000 Honda, Acura vehicles recalled over Brake problem

Honda and Acura have announced a recall affecting several models due to a brake issue that could compromise the strength or full use of the brakes. The recall encompasses the Honda Civic (2020–2021), Passport (2021–2023), Pilot (2021–2022), and Ridgeline (2020–2023) and a single Acura model, the MDX (2020).

According to the official recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from improper assembly of the tie rod fastener that connects the brake master cylinder and the brake booster. When the brake is applied, the documents explain, the tie rod studs may break, causing the master cylinder to separate from the brake booster. This manufacturing problem could cause the brakes to weaken or fail altogether, increasing the risk of a crash.

Honda says it has received two warranty claims related to the problem but has received no notice of any accidents or injuries. Owners can consult the NHTSA recalls website to learn if their vehicle is included in the recall, and Honda will send recall notices in August.

Toyota Recalls Certain 2023 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Highlander, Tacoma, and Lexus RX and 2024 NX Models

Toyota is conducting a non-compliance safety recall in the U.S. involving certain 2023 model year Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross hybrid, Highlander, Highlander hybrid, Tacoma, as well as Lexus RX and RX hybrid and 2024 model year NX and NX hybrid vehicles. Approximately 110,000 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in this recall.

In the affected vehicles, the spiral cable assembly in the steering column may lose its electrical connection on the circuit controlling the driver’s airbag. If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and the driver’s airbag may not deploy in a crash. As a result, the vehicle will not comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety requirements and may increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the serial number of the spiral cable and, if necessary, replace it with a new cable at no cost to customers. Toyota will notify affected owners about this issue by early September 2023.

Information about automotive recalls, including but not limited to the list of involved vehicles, is current as of today’s filing date and is subject to change thereafter. To see if your vehicle is involved in a safety recall visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information.

80,000 Nissan Leaf EVs recalled over risk of Unintended Acceleration

Nissan will be recalling 2018 through 2022 Leaf EVs to fix a problem with the vehicle control module. Reportedly the problem can cause a short circuit that could make an electric motor stop while the vehicle is being driven or could cause sudden vehicle acceleration after exiting cruise control.

A Nissan spokesperson described the issue to Car and Driver this way: "When certain actions are taken immediately after turning off the cruise control (including Intelligent Cruise Control and Pro-PILOT), some e-POWER and electric vehicles may experience unintended acceleration." The spokesperson did not elaborate on what the "certain actions" were other than to say: "These actions were discovered in internal vehicle testing and are not normally performed in the real world. Nissan has not received any reports of issues or accidents."

Worldwide, several Nissan models produced between 2017 and 2023, totaling nearly a million vehicles, are included in the recall, but in the U.S. only the Leaf is affected. Nissan said the recall will include 80,952 U.S. Leaf EVs from model years 2018 through 2023.

A Nissan spokesperson told Car and Driver that the company will install updated vehicle control module software, which will require owners to bring the vehicles to a dealer.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet published documentation on the recall, but owners of potentially affected Leaf EVs can check the Nissan recall website or the NHTSA recall site to see if their vehicle is affected.
