Rearview Camera problems cause Ford Bronco recall

A 2021-2022 Ford Bronco recall has been issued for more than 47,000 vehicles equipped with rearview camera systems and 8-inch screen displays.

Ford says the backup camera image may stay on the display screen after a Bronco driver has shifted out of REVERSE. The problem is the SYNC software which was not properly configured for when the driver operates the vehicle in 4-Low mode.

Ford Bronco recall letters will be mailed December 19, 2022, and Ford dealers will update the SYNC module software. It's also possible to update the software over-the-air without taking the Bronco to a dealer.

The automaker call this the "Ford Power-Up" deployment update.

GM Daytime Running Lights recall affects 338,000 Vehicles

General Motors daytime running lights have caused a recall of more than 338,000 vehicles equipped with running lights that may not deactivate when the headlights are on. The daytime running lights must go off when the headlights are turned on due to the glare to oncoming drivers. The issue also violates federal safety standards.

The GM daytime running lights recall includes these model year 2021 vehicles:

  • GMC Yukon
  • GMC Yukon XL
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Cadillac Escalade ESV
GM learned of the problem following vehicle validation testing that found the daytime running lights didn't turn off on certain 2021 models. GM opened an investigation which traced the problem to the body control module software.

GM plans on mailing recall letters December 19, 2022, and dealerships will update the body control module software.

Tesla Power Steering recall affects Model S and Model X vehicles

A Tesla power steering recall affects more than 40,000 model year 2017-2021 Model S and Model X vehicles. Losing power steering assist will require a driver to use more effort to turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds. Tesla says a Model S or Model X is more likely to lose power steering after hitting a pothole or when driving on rough roads.

Tesla began rolling out firmware release 2022.36 on October 11, 2022, which included, "updated calibration values for the electronic power assist steering (EPAS) system to better detect unexpected steering assist torque."

But on October 18, 2022, Tesla noticed an increasing rate of alerts related to the updated power steering calibration values on certain 2017-2021 Model S and Model X vehicles.

The following day Tesla began deploying firmware release 2022.36.5 which reverted the calibration values for the electronic power steering to pre-2022.36 values. This provided engineers with time to figure out what happened. Tesla Model S and Model X owners should hear alerts and also see alerts on the instrument panels if the power steering is having trouble.

Tesla power steering recall letters are expected to be mailed December 31, 2022, but Tesla has already released over-the-air software updates to recalibrate the systems.

Kia Niro Hybrids recalled following 5 Fires

A Kia Niro Hybrid rear seat fire recall involves more than 27,000 model year 2017-2018 Kia Niro Hybrid electric vehicles previously recalled in 2018. This recall follows five rear seat fires caused by the main relays in the power relay assemblies.

Kia says the main relay may have faulty connections between the contacts which cause electrical resistance and overheating. According to Kia, the power relay assembly (PRA) is located under the rear seat, and the 2018 recall was supposed to fix any overheating issues.

Kia dealers were told to inspect and replace the PRA if thermal damage was found, or replace the main relay if no thermal damage was found. However, the Niro Hybrids may not have had the correct remedy relays installed during repairs. In June 2022, Kia learned about a dealer report regarding a complaint of burning odors in a 2017 Niro Hybrid. The dealer discovered the PRA had melted, yet the vehicle had been repaired under the previous recall.

Then another complaint came in that said a 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid wouldn't start because the PRA had melted even though the vehicle had previously been repaired. Kia says it determined the wrong replacement parts had been installed.

To date, a total of five fires (localized melting/damage only) have been confirmed, but no crashes, injuries or fatalities. The 2017-2018 Kia Niro Hybrids were manufactured from November 1, 2016, to September 11, 2017. Kia Niro Hybrid drivers should watch for hybrid system warning lights, and it's possible the vehicle may refuse to start.

Kia Niro Hybrid recall letters are expected to be mailed January 9, 2023, and dealers will replace either the power relay assemblies or the main relays. Kia Niro Hybrid vehicles repaired under the 2018 recall will need to have the new repairs completed.

Ford recalls 450,000 F-150 Trucks for possible Wiper Motor failure

Ford has issued a recall for certain 2021-2022 F-150 trucks. The front windshield wiper motor might fail, leaving the wipers inoperable, which could lead to an accident. The recall affects 453,650 trucks.

The recall does not affect models built at the company’s Dearborn Truck Plant from May 3, 2021, to September 10, 2021. During this time, Ford made these trucks with a different wiper motor design due to pandemic-induced microchip shortages. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. However, the automaker said it’s aware of 1,378 warranty reports globally related to inoperative or intermittently functioning windshield wipers.

Ford will contact owners with affected trucks, with the automaker sending out owner notification letters on January 3, 2023. Dealers will replace the front windshield wiper motor free of charge.

Tesla recalls 3,21,000 U.S. vehicles over Rear light issue

Tesla Model 3 and Model Y tail light failures have caused a recall of more than 321,000 vehicles, but Tesla believes only about 1% of the vehicles may be affected.

Recalled are 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with one or both tail lights that may intermittently fail to illuminate. Tesla says the tail light failures are caused by a "firmware anomaly" that may cause false fault detections during the vehicle wake-up process.

Tesla noticed customer complaints about tail lights from owners outside the U.S. Tesla investigated vehicle log data and firmware release details for the vehicles and engineers confirmed what was causing the problem.

Tesla will release an over-the-air software update that will keep the tail lights working. Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners should watch for recall letters in January 2023.

Tesla recalls Model X SUVs over Passenger Airbag problems

A Tesla Model X recall involves more than 29,000 SUVs that may have problems when the front passenger airbags deploy. The recalled 2021-2023 Model X SUVs have restraint control module (RCM) calibrations that may cause airbag issues in low-speed crashes. The front passenger airbag problem can occur when a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger is not in position and not wearing a seat belt.

Tesla found the passenger airbag problem in October during a Model X test of the restraint system which didn't deploy the airbag correctly. Tesla engineers performed additional tests which confirmed the passenger restraint system problem violated federal safety standards.

As of November 8, 2022, "Tesla is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition."

Tesla Model X recall letters will be mailed in January 2023, but Tesla will fix the problem by releasing an over-the-air software update to recalibrate the Model X restraint control module.

Ford Cracked Fuel Injection Recall released after the fires.
A Ford cracked fuel injector recall involves more than 634,000 Escape and Bronco Sport vehicles following at least 20 fires, three that caused nearby buildings to catch fire. The Ford fuel injector recall, which includes about 522,000 vehicles in the U.S., was issued after four injuries were reported.

The cracked fuel injector recall includes 2020-2023 Ford Escape and 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L engines.

According to Ford, a cracked fuel injector may leak fuel inside the engine compartment. An engine compartment fire can occur if fuel leaks onto a hot ignition source. The automaker says four owners discovered the fires within five minutes of shutting down the engines.

All the recalled Ford Escapes and Ford Bronco Sports equipped with 1.5L engines were previously recalled in April, but apparently the recall repairs didn't work. Ford was trying to find a cause of engine fires and engineers suspected the engine oil separator housings could crack and develop oil leaks.

At the time, Ford said the Escapes and Bronco Sports could suffer from cracks at the edges of the oil separator housings which caused the seals to fail. This could cause oil to leak between the oil separator and engine camshaft cover.

Even after the previous recall repairs and months of investigating, Ford says the "root cause is still under investigation." However, engineers do know a cracked fuel injector will allow a lot of fuel to quickly leak into the cylinder head.

According to the cracked fuel injector recall, Ford Escape and Bronco Sport owners don't need to stop driving the vehicles. But customers should be aware of fuel odors, gas leaking from under the engine compartments, and of course seeing smoke or flames isn't a good sign.

Customers with concerns about repairing the vehicles should ask their Ford dealers about loaner vehicles and other free services. Ford fuel injector recall letters will be mailed December 19, 2022.

Ford will update the engine control software to detect a pressure drop in the fuel rail and provide a warning message to have the vehicle serviced. A dealer will also install a drain tube to allow fuel to drain from the cylinder head drain hole onto the ground below the vehicle. This will allegedly keep gas away from hot surfaces that could start a fire.

Audi Gateway Control Module recall affects 50,000 vehicles

An Audi gateway control module recall involves more than 50,000 of these vehicles with modules that can shut down if liquid reaches the modules.

  • 2020-2022 Audi S7
  • 2020-2022 Audi S6 Sedan
  • 2020-2022 Audi A6 allroad
  • 2021-2022 Audi RS7
  • 2021-2022 Audi RS6 Avant
  • 2019-2022 Audi A7
  • 2019-2022 Audi A6 Sedan
The Audi gateway control module is located under the rear middle seat, but spilled liquid that reaches the module can cause the module to switch off and cause internal errors. Those errors arise from short circuits within the control unit. Audi says the vehicle can still be steered and the brakes still function, but the engine enters emergency mode which reduces engine power.

In December 2021, Audi issued a recall of Q5 vehicles to install protective covers on the gateway control modules and to seal the underbody in the area of a faulty glue bead.

Audi didn't see problems with any other model but months later learned about 46 warranty claims related to the modules. The automaker is unaware of any crash or injury reports. Several warning messages will appear if the gateway control module shuts down, and even though several systems are displaying a malfunction, not all of these systems are affected.

Audi recall letters will be mailed January 20, 2023, and dealers will install protective covers to protect the components.

The Jeep Wrangler 4XE recall has been announced.

A Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall has been announced because the 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe SUVs can stall and shut down. The 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are equipped with 2-liter engines.

According to Fiat Chrysler (FCA), the Jeep recall of 63,000 vehicles follows, "112 customer assistance records, 196 warranty claims, and 65 field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from December 17, 2020, to October 26, 2022."

FCA opened an internal investigation in September into 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEVs for a loss of motive power. Chrysler learned about two Wrangler 4xe crashes and one injury, convincing the automaker to issue the recall.

FCA says the problem began in September 2020 and ended in August 2022 when the 2023 Wrangler 4xe model year production began with updated vehicle control software.

Jeep dealerships will update the transmission control module software, but Wrangler 4xe owners may call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number ZB7.Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall letters are expected to be mailed January 12, 2023.

Kia Sportage Airbag problems lead to recall of 77,000 SUVs

Kia side curtain airbag problems have caused a recall of about 77,000 model year 2023 Kia Sportage vehicles. Kia engineers were at a test of a 2023 Kia Sportage in Georgia when the driver's side curtain airbag did not deploy properly, but engineers couldn't determine what caused the problem.

Kia performed a search of 2023 Sportage data but found no airbag issues. Kia believes the side curtain airbag failed due to worker errors when the airbags were twisted during assembly at the Kia Georgia assembly plant. Kia is unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the side curtain airbag problem.

Kia Sportage recall letters will be mailed December 28, 2022, and Kia dealers will inspect and possibly reinstall the side curtain airbags.

Subaru recalls 271,694 Ascent SUVs for Fire Risk

Subaru is recalling 271,694 Ascent SUVs for a potential fire risk involving electrical connections with the heater. The recall covers models from 2019 through 2022.

The specific problem is with a ground bolt that connects the ground terminal for the SUV's Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater. This is essentially an electric-style heater used to deliver heat to the cabin before the engine warms up. Subaru says the bolt in question may have been improperly installed during assembly. This could create some electrical troubles, possibly melting the ground terminal and nearby components when the heater is in use. If things get hot enough to melt, there's naturally a risk for fire, hence the recall.

There have been no crashes or injuries related to this issue, according to Subaru. However, there are a handful of related incidents that the automaker is aware of, including some that led to a vehicle fire. Subaru recommends 2019-2022 Ascent owners to park outside, away from other vehicles and structures until an inspection – and repairs if necessary – can be done.

Owner notification through the mail will occur within 60 days of this announcement.

Ford Driveshaft recall affects F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty Trucks

A Ford truck driveshaft recall includes 2017-2018 Ford F-250, Ford F-350 and Ford F-450 Super Duty trucks equipped with driveshafts that may break.

A busted driveshaft will allow the truck to roll away and the truck will also lose the ability to move forward. It's also possible other components may be damaged by the fractured driveshafts.

Ford says a radial damper inside the driveshaft may move out of position over time which can cause an imbalance of the truck driveshaft. The imbalanced driveshaft will cause noise and vibration which if ignored can allow the driveshaft to fracture.

More than 18,800 recalled Ford Super Duty trucks have 176” wheelbases and 4.1 or 4.3 rear axle ratios. Federal safety regulators contacted Ford in June about a driveshaft fracture on a 2017 Ford F-450 with a 176" wheelbase. The truck owner said his vehicle should have been included in a 2017 Ford truck driveshaft recall.

Ford searched the data and found 16 driveshaft reports on similar trucks. Ford engineers also discovered an elevated number and rate of reports about trucks with specific axle ratios. Ford knows of more than 63 Super Duty driveshaft reports worldwide, but no crash or injury reports.

Ford will mail driveshaft recall letters January 9, 2023, and Ford dealers will replace the Super Duty driveshafts.
