Mercedes-Benz recalls GLS-Class vehicles over Seatbacks

Mercedes-Benz third-row seatbacks may not hold during crashes, a problem that caused a recall of about 60,000 model year 2021 Mercedes AMG GLS63, 2020-2022 Mercedes GLS450 and GLS580 vehicles.

The automaker says something occurred during manufacturing of the locks on the third-row seatback. The springs in the locking mechanism of the third-row left and right seatback might not have been installed according to specifications.

An owner won't know of a problem until the problem occurs and someone possibly gets injured. A sub-supplier contacted the automaker in February about a problem with how the springs were positioned in the seatback locking mechanism.

Mercedes doesn't know of any warranty claims, service reports or field reports related to the seatback locks. Mercedes-Benz expects to mail seatback recall letters November 29, 2022, and dealers will replace the third-row seatbacks.

GM recalls Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs over Seat Bolts

A General Motors seat cushion frame involves more than 7,500 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, all due to loose bolts. The recalled 2022-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and 2022 GMC Terrain SUVs may have driver's seats with stripped or loose bolts at the seat frame height adjustment pivots.

GM says the seat structure may not restrain the occupant in a crash if the seat frame height-adjust pivot bolt comes out of the pivot joint. The recalled SUVs are equipped with power driver seats that are not equipped with memory function.

General Motors blames the seat frame supplier and its assembly process that did not discovered bolts that weren't properly torqued. Vehicle occupants may hear squeaks or rattles and may notice loose parts. It was during noise testing in July at an assembly plant a driver's seat frame height adjustment pivot bolt was found on the floor of the test vehicle.

GM opened a formal investigation in August by inspecting vehicles at assembly plants and analyzing parts that had been returned to the supplier.

Chevy and GMC dealers will inspect the driver's seats and replace the seat cushion frames if necessary. GM recall letters are expected to be mailed November 14, 2022,

Hyundai 8-Speed Transmission recall issued after 230 Incidents

A Hyundai 8-speed transmission recall involves more than 53,000 vehicles following 230 complaints about vehicles that lost motive power due to the dual-clutch transmissions.

The 8-speed transmission recall includes these Hyundai models:

  • 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe
  • 2021-2022 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2021-2022 Hyundai Veloster N
  • 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
  • 2022 Hyundai Elantra N
  • 2022 Hyundai Kona N
In September, Hyundai was contacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding 2022 Santa Cruz vehicles losing motive power at various speeds.

Engineers determined the problem was caused by internal faults of the Santa Cruz 8-speed dual-clutch transmission electric oil pumps.

Hyundai says the problem is the high-pressure electric oil pump within the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission which may suffer from internal faults that trigger diagnostic trouble codes.

A driver will also see multiple warning lights as the vehicle enters a fail-safe mode which allows normal driving for the next 20-30 seconds. Then the vehicle will completely lose motive power when the transmission clutches and drive gears disengage, even at high speeds.

Hyundai transmission recall letters are expected to be mailed December 5, 2022. Hyundai dealers will inspect the 8-speed transmissions and possibly replace them.

The dual-clutch transmission recall will also see Hyundai technicians reprogramming the transmission control units with updated software the automaker alleges will provide proper “fail-safe” driving capability.

Kia K5 and Sorento Transmissions may need to be replaced

A Kia 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) recall involves about 70,000 Sorento and K5 vehicles that may need new transmissions. Recalled are 2021-2022 Kia Sorento and 2021-2023 Kia K5 vehicles equipped with fail-safe limited-mobility drive mode.

The system may have problems when prompted by a malfunction of the transmission oil pump. The defect will cause the Kia to completely lose drive power. In addition to being equipped with 8-speed dual-clutch transmissions, the recalled Kia Sorento and Kia K5 vehicles are equipped with 2.5L turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) engines.

Kia investigated its Sorento and K5 vehicles and found 29 alleged incidents of loss of motive power due to internal faults with electric oil pumps in 2021-2022 Sorentos and seven alleged incidents that involved 2021-2023 K5 vehicles. The supplier made errors that could cause the electric oil pump inside the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission to suffer an internal fault.

The Kia vehicles may set diagnostic trouble codes and issue warnings to drivers about the ability to drive the vehicles normally for 20 to 30 seconds. But then the vehicle will lose all motive power as the transmission drive gears disengage. According to Kia, a component of the electric oil pump circuit board can detach due to faulty soldering at the supplier.

A Kia driver should be aware of hearing chimes, seeing a message that says stop safely immediately, and noticing the illumination of a warning light. Kia says it is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities.

Kia dual-clutch transmission recall letters will be mailed December 9, 2022. Kia dealerships will inspect the transmissions and replace them if needed. Technicians will also reprogram the transmission control units with updated software.

Audi Q5 and VW Atlas Engines may need to be replaced

A VW connecting rod bearing recall may require complete engine replacements in 2021-2023 Audi Q5, 2022-2023 Volkswagen Atlas and VW Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The engine connecting rod bearings may become damaged and cause total engine failure, leading to the recall of more than 74,000 vehicles.

In November 2021, Volkswagen learned about a fire in a Volkswagen Atlas that may have originated in the engine compartment. The vehicle suffered severe engine damage and engineers couldn't determine what caused the fire. In February 2022 VW was investigating engine noise at an assembly plant and engines were shipped to the engine factory where it was determined there were connecting rod problems.

VW then learned about another Atlas engine fire but the damage was too much to determine a cause.

The automaker says a connecting rod bearing with continuously rising bearing play leads to excessive engine noise. The damage could cause leaking engine oil which can cause a fire. Volkswagen expects to mail engine recall letters December 6, 2022, and dealers will inspect the engines to determine if they should be replaced.

The Nissan infotainment recall involves Titan, Frontier and Rogue.

A Nissan infotainment system recall includes 2022 Nissan Titan, 2022 Nissan Titan XD, 2022 Nissan Frontier and 2021-2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles. The recall of more than 27,000 vehicles was announced because the Nisaan infotainment systems may continuously restart when the vehicles are restarted. This means the backup camera image can't display properly, a violation of federal safety standards.

The vehicles are equipped with Bosch infotainment systems and specific software versions, and Nissan says the problem occurs only because of a "combination of software logic and vehicle architecture complexity." Nissan received an infotainment complaint from a 2022 Nissan Titan customer in March with the owner claiming the infotainment system kept rebooting.

Nissan and Bosch opened an investigation which determined the infotainment system could suffer a power loss during a two-minute window which triggered the reboots.

Some 2021-2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles were manufactured between October 18, 2021, and April 21, 2022, and other Rogues were built November 22, 2021, to May 26, 2022.

The recalled 2022 Nissan Titan/Titan XD trucks were manufactured between December 18, 2021, and May 19, 2022. And the recalled 2022 Nissan Frontier trucks were manufactured between February 28, 2022, and March 17, 2022.

Nissan infotainment recall letters are expected to be mailed November 18, 2022, and dealers will update the infotainment software or the job can be done through over-the-air updates.

Jeep Wrangler Hybrids recalled over Battery Fuse problems

Chrysler is recalling 2022-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) equipped with high-voltage battery pack assemblies that may have been built with incorrect fasteners to secure the 200-amp fuses. About 14,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe electric vehicles are involved in the recall.

This can cause overheating in the fuse interface which can cause the fuse to fail. This will cause the Jeep Wrangler 4xe to suddenly lose motive power.

FCA opened an investigation in April after receiving word about a damaged fuse in the battery pack assembly of a 2022 Jeep Wrangler PHEV. That report was followed by two more reports of damaged fuses.

In May the automaker determined the wrong fasteners were used to secure the 200-amp fuses. Then in June Chrysler learned of another damaged Jeep Wrangler 4xe fuse and the supplier confirmed the wrong fastener was involved. A Jeep driver may notice illumination of a warning light, a change in how the vehicle drives, or a driver or occupant may hear noise coming from the battery pack assembly.

Fiat Chrysler expects to mail recall letters December 2, 2022, and dealers will replace the high-voltage 200-amp battery fuses. Dealers will also inspect the battery assemblies for damage and replace them if necessary.

Kia Sportage Engine Fire recall issued agrain

A Kia Sportage engine fire recall announced in 2016 apparently didn't prevent the SUVs from catching fire. Now Kia has announced a second Kia engine fire recall of more than 71,000 model year 2008-2009 Sportage SUVs, but the automaker doesn't know how dealers will fix the vehicles.
A 2008-2009 Kia Sportage fire can occur if the SUV is parked or while driving, and owners are warned to park outside and away from things that could burn.

The first Kia Sportage engine fire recall was issued in November 2016 for 2008-2009 models due to corrosion from improper sealing of the hydraulic electronic control unit wiring harness covers. Kia dealers were told to inspect the connector pins for corrosion and to replace the connector covers if no corrosion was found. But the hydraulic electronic control units were also to be replaced if dealers saw evidence of corrosion.

Kia Sportage Engine fires continue after recall
In August 2022 Kia received a report about a 2008 Sportage that caught fire while parked and the electronic control unit had been replaced during the 2016 engine fire recall.

Kia investigated customer complaints and discovered heat damage in the area of the hydraulic electronic control units in 15 Sportage SUVs. All the vehicles had the connector covers replaced during the 2016 Sportage recall.

A Kia engineer inspected a 2008 Sportage and determined the fire originated in the front right corner of the engine compartment in the area of the electronic control unit. However, there was too much fire damage to determine what caused the fire. In the case of a 2009 Kia Sportage fire, engineers found corroded wiring near the connector and foreign substances or corrosion on the printed circuit board.

According to the documents related to the Kia Sportage engine fire recall, the automaker is aware of eight vehicle fires and 15 localized melting incidents between April 2017 and September 2022. Although there have been no crashes, injuries or deaths, Kia still doesn't know the root cause of the Sportage fires.

Kia Sportage engine fire recall letters are expected to be mailed December 22, 2022. Because the cause of the fires is undetermined, so is the recall remedy.

Mercedes Sprinter Vans recalled after Rollaway incidents

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 124,000 Sprinter vans that may have defects that cause the vans to roll away. The recalled 2019-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vans are equipped with manual parking brakes and 7-speed automatic transmissions.

Mercedes says the guide bushing on the parking pawl may wear out and cause the parking pawl not to engage. This is what will allow the Sprinter to roll away.
Sprinter owners should engage the parking brakes to prevent the vans from rolling away. The driver will not receive a warning until the van begins to move.

Mercedes originally recalled the vans in January to remove the park lock support function while engineers tried to determine the root cause of the allegedly "rare phenomenon."

The automaker repurchased Sprinters that experienced unintended rolling incidents and shipped the vans to Germany for testing. The parking systems were tested as well as the transmissions and engineers could find only "sporadic malfunctions" of the park lock systems.

In October, Mercedes learned the "rare and temporary park lock function error might be caused by specific wear patterns on the guide bushing in the transmission." For a rollaway to occur, it takes a "combination of driver parking practices and low-speed ratcheting of the parking pawl when “P” is activated while the vehicle is moving at a low speed."

Mercedes will mail Sprinter recall letters December 19, 2022. Dealers will update the software of various control units, including the electronic stability and transmission control units.

Volvo recalls Vehicles that may not be able to Start

Like so many vehicle recalls of this era, Volvo has announced a recall of about 16,000 vehicles, but not to replace mechanical parts. Volvo's recall is related to software that must be updated so the combustion engines continue to start.

Recalled are these vehicles that may have electronic control module (ECM) software errors that prevent the engines from starting.

  • 2022-2023 Volvo S60
  • 2022-2023 Volvo V60
  • 2022-2023 Volvo S90L
  • 2022-2023 Volvo XC60
  • 2022-2023 Volvo XC90
Volvo knew of 39 reports of the condition and the automaker considered the issue critical. Volvo engineers were able to re-create the issue and determined the flow of coolant was causing problems. A driver will see a message that says, "Propulsion System Service Required" when starting the vehicle, but the driver can start and drive the vehicle in electric mode.

A second warning will appear and if that warning is ignored, the vehicle will display a “stop safely” message and lose electric propulsion as the high-voltage battery is drained.

Volvo will mail recall letters December 8, 2022, and dealerships will update the ECM software.

Ford Transit Vans could lose their Heating and Cooling Controls

A Ford Transit recall involves more than 31,300 model year 2022-2023 Transit vans equipped with 12” center stack displays with SYNC4 and electronic automatic temperature controls. Ford says the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system controls, including those for defog and defrost, may fail to function.

The recalled Transit parts were introduced into production on February 26, 2021, and vans built after September 15, 2022, have updated software.

In September, Ford learned of problems with HVAC controls that didn't work in Transit vans. The Kansas City assembly plant discovered 49 warranty claims on vans equipped with 12” center stack displays with SYNC4 and electronic automatic temperature controls.

Ford investigated and determined software problems could cause the controls to sporadically fail. The only way to restore the controls is to disconnect the battery or replace the HVAC control module. As of September 21, there were 75 warranty claims but no crashes or injuries.

Ford Transit recall letters will be mailed November 7, 2022, and dealers will update the remote climate control module software.

Hyundai recalls 2018 Santa Fe Sports after 4 Fires

A 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport ABS module recall involves more than 44,000 SUVs following at least four Santa Fe Sport fires. According to Hyundai, owners of 2018 Santa Fe Sport SUVs should park outside and away from anything that could burn. The anti-lock brake system could cause a short-circuit with the result of an engine compartment fire.

Hyundai says a fire can occur whether the 2018 Santa Fe Sport is in motion or parked. An electrical short could cause a significant overcurrent in the ABS module which is what causes a fire. Both Hyundai and Kia have been investigating the root cause of the fires and engineers still haven't tracked down the real problem.

The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport ABS module recall is an expansion of a February recall of about 425,000 Hyundai vehicles. The recalled 2018 Hyundai vehicles have vehicle identification numbers that were not included in the February ABS module fire recall.

In August, Hyundai was notified about a legal matter regarding a 2018 Santa Fe Sport fire and the SUV wasn't included in the February ABS module recall. In October Hyundai learned about another 2018 Santa Fe Sport fire and the automaker learned SUVs built between May 2017 and May 2018 had been excluded from the recall.

Hyundai warns 2018 Santa Fe Sport owners to be aware of any engine compartment fires, melting or burning odors and illuminated warning lights. Although four 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport ABS module fires have been reported, no crashes or injuries have occurred.

VW recalls vehicles over Tire Pressure Monitoring System problems

Audi and Volkswagen tire pressure monitoring system problems have caused a recall of more than 224,000 vehicles for dealerships to update the monitoring system software.

VW says the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not detect an air pressure loss in adequate time when deflating occurs, but only when all four tires simultaneously deflate at the same rate and the same time. According to federal regulations, a tire pressure monitoring system must detect an air pressure loss in a specific period of time.

However, no matter how many tires deflate or lose pressure, drivers of these recalled vehicles will still receive air pressure warnings.

  • 2019-2020 Volkswagen Golf A7
  • 2019 Audi Q3
  • 2019 Audi A3 Cabriolet
  • 2019-2020 Audi A3
In May 2020, Volkswagen contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about filing forms to avoid a recall because VW didn't believe the TPMS problem caused a safety danger. Audi and VW blame the problems on a change to the brake control unit hardware, but the module software should have also been changed but wasn't.

VW filed the petition for inconsequential non-compliance with NHTSA but the petition was denied. Audi and Volkswagen are not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, incidents or injuries. Audi and VW owner recall letters are expected to be mailed December 30, 2022.
