Hyundai Palisade Fires cause Warning to park outside

A 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade tow hitch harness recall involves more than 250,000 SUVs at risk of fires. Hyundai is warning owners to "park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete."

The Palisades are equipped with tow hitch harnesses either as original equipment or purchased as accessories at Hyundai dealers.According to Hyundai, the Palisades could catch fire even with the Palisade shut off.

In March 2021, Hyundai Canada received a report from a dealership regarding a 2020 Palisade that experienced a fire originating in the bumper area while parked. Then in April 2021, Hyundai Canada received a report from a dealer about a 2020 Palisade equipped with a trailer accessory module that had melted.

Hyundai inspected the second Palisade and found the trailer hitch wiring harness hadn't been installed correctly. However, the automaker couldn't determine what caused the first incident.

In December 2021 another Palisade suffered a "thermal event" while the ignition was turned off, but Hyundai couldn't determine what caused the tow hitch wiring module to melt.
In April 2022, two more Canadian Palisade incidents occurred, with three of the four incidents involving fires. Engineers investigated the vehicles and found degradation of the B+ wires inside the modules.

To date, Hyundai is aware of three Palisade fires and eight melting incidents in Canada, and eight melting events in the U.S. According to Hyundai, there are no confirmed crashes or injuries, and about 4,000 of the recalled Palisades are in Canada.

Hyundai expects to mail Palisade recall letters October 17, 2022, but dealers don't yet know how the SUVs will be repaired. As an interim repair, dealerships will inspect the tow hitch modules and remove the fuses.

Chevy Spark hood latch recall issued after 22 crashes

A Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Spark EV hood latch recall involves more than 120,000 cars with secondary hood latch strikers that may become stuck out of position from corrosion and allow the hoods to open while driving. The recalled 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark EV hood latches may not properly engage if corrosion occurs at the latch pivots.

Chevy Spark owners who had their cars in 2014 may remember a hood latch recall announced in October 2014 for about 90,000 cars. This latest recall is an expansion of the 2014 recall and the cars repaired in 2014 will need to be repaired again. General Motors says the supplier didn't apply enough protective coating to the hood striker assemblies and secondary latch levers.

GM opened an investigation in May 2022 following complaints about Chevy Spark hood latches that corroded even though the cars were recalled and repaired in 2014. GM expanded the investigation in June to include all 2013-2015 Spark and 2014-2015 Spark EV cars. The automaker found 276 field reports worldwide about the Spark hood latches, with 22 reports which alleged the open hoods caused crashes. One minor injury was also reported.

GM dealers don't currently have the replacement Chevy Spark hood striker assemblies and hood latch assemblies, but GM will mail recall letters to Spark customers on October 10, 2022. Second Chevy Spark hood latch recall letters will be mailed once dealers have the replacement components.

Ford Blower Motor recall issued after 25 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator fires
A Ford blower motor recall involves more than 198,000 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs covering 2015-2017 model years. Following at least 25 fires, the Ford blower motor recall involves the front blower motor located behind the glovebox.

Even though this is a blower motor recall and engineers have spent months investigating, Ford isn't sure of the exact root cause of the fires.

Of the 25 reported fires, 13 were localized fires in the blower motor area and the remaining 12 reports involved more extensive damage to the vehicles. There were also three instances of property damage to structures and one Ford fire that caused another vehicle to catch fire.

The 12 reports of extensive fire damage made it difficult for engineers to know for a fact the fires came from the blower motors. According to Ford, all 25 fires occurred while the SUVs were running.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informed Ford of five complaints about 2016-2017 Expeditions. Based on those five reports, there were two complaints about blower failures, two complaints alleged fires under the gloveboxes and one report of a melted harness to the blower controller. Of the five complaints to NHTSA, only one customer had also contacted Ford regarding their concerns.

Customers have reported various symptoms, including fans that failed, burning smells and smoke from the instrument panel vents while the vehicles were running. Based on blower motor testing, the fires may be due to an internal short or localized heating of the brush springs or holders.

Ford blower motor recall letters will be mailed September 12, 2022, and Ford dealers will replace the front blower motor assemblies.

Kia recalls 2023 Sportage following 2 fires

It may be 2022, but Kia has already recalled nearly 20,000 of its 2023 Sportage vehicles right from the get-go.

According to Kia, the Sportage alternator battery positive terminal nut may loosen and cause a stalled engine or even a fire due to electrical arcing at the B+ terminal. In May, Kia learned about a complaint made to a dealer regarding a 2023 Kia Sportage that wouldn't start. The dealer found a loose alternator cable and thermal damage to alternator, wire harness and intake manifold.

Kia then received a second report in July from a dealer concerning a customer who complained the 2023 Sportage lost power, shut off and wouldn't start. The Kia dealer found melting of the alternator B+ terminal and nut. Kia is aware of two 2023 Sportage fires, one that involved melting at the B+ terminal and one with localized damage around the alternator. But Kia says it is unaware of any fatalities, injuries or crashes.

Kia says the alternator battery positive (B+) terminal nut ensures the electrical connection is maintained between the battery wire harness terminal plate and the alternator B+ terminal. But the B+ terminal nut may not have been properly torqued by the supplier during assembly. A Sportage driver may notice an illuminated charging system warning light.

Kia Sportage recall letters will be mailed September 23, 2022, and Kia dealers will tighten any loose alternator B+ terminal nuts.

VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport recalled for Loose Bolts

A 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport recall includes more than 3,100 vehicles that may have loose trailer hitch bolts. Owners are warned not to tow trailers until the vehicles have been repaired.

The trailer hitch bolts may begin to loosen and if even one bolt falls out, the remaining bolts may not be able to handle the stress which could cause separation of the trailer hitch during towing. This could cause serious problems for everyone on the road.

In April, VW received the first bolts from a new supplier and the failure rates increased. Auditors then saw an incorrect rework procedure on a vehicle, but VW couldn't find any claims from the field about loose trailer hitch bolts. Atlas drivers will likely hear noise if a bolt starts to loosen.

Owners of 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles should watch for recall letters which are expected to be mailed October 28, 2022.

Porsche recalls 193,000 vehicles with missing Headlight Caps

A Porsche headlight recall involves more than 193,000 Porsche vehicles because missing caps can allow the headlights to be adjusted.
The caps that cover the low-beam headlight horizontal adjustment screws are missing which can allow customers to make mistakes when adjusting the horizontal headlights.

With low-beam headlights, federal safety standards mandate sealing caps must be used to prevent customers from adjusting the low-beam horizontal headlights at all. This is because improper horizontal aim can create glare to other drivers or cause Porsche drivers problems when seeing at night.

A Porsche assembly plant discovered the sealing caps were missing on vehicles in May which caused Porsche to open an investigation. Porsche found the sealing caps weren't installed due to the wrong assembly instructions.

Porsche expects to mail headlight recall letters October 29, 2022. Porsche dealers will install any missing headlight adjustment sealing caps.

Nissan recalls Frontiers and Titans for Rollaway Dangers

A Nissan transmission parking pawl recall involves more than 203,000 Frontier and Titan trucks that need their parking brakes applied every time the trucks are parked.

The recalled 2020-2023 Nissan Frontier and Titan trucks could roll away if the transmission parking pawls don't engage when the trucks are shifted into PARK. More than 180,000 of the Nissan trucks were recalled in July for the same transmission problem.

The 2020-2023 Nissan Titans were built December 13, 2019, to August 25, 2022. The 2020-2021 Nissan Frontier trucks were manufactured from June 10, 2020, to June 25, 2021. And the 2022-2023 Nissan Frontiers were produced between July 13, 2021, and August 25, 2022.

But Nissan received a report from an assembly plant about a 2022 Nissan Frontier that rolled even though the gear shifter was in PARK. Nissan says the truck was outside the recall production dates for the trucks.

Transmission supplier JATCO performed tests and told Nissan the rollaway problem appeared to be different than the problem that caused the July recall. Nissan conducted a plant audit and identified 11 out of 83 vehicles with the transmission issue.

Nissan is still investigating and the recall remedy is currently unknown. Nissan expects to mail Titan and Frontier recall letters by November 1, 2022, but dealers don't know how the trucks will be repaired because Nissan is still working on a fix.

Mercedes recalls 161,000 GLE-Class and GLS-Class vehicles

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 161,000 GLE-Class and GLS-Class vehicles because the rear window trim bars may detach from manufacturing errors.

A detached rear window trim bar could cause trouble for other vehicles on the road.

Mercedes began receiving reports in March 2021 about rear window trim bars that were loose or had detached from a vehicle while driving. Mercedes opened an investigation and found that during a previous recall, the design of the trim attachment had been modified.

But engineers determined parts involved in the current incidents weren't included in the prior recall and had been manufactured after the design change. Mercedes learned a vehicle assembly plant had made changes which included removing and reinstalling the trim bars.

According to Mercedes-Benz, there have been at least 75 warranty claims about the rear window trim bars. However, Mercedes is not aware of any crashes, injuries or damage to other vehicles.

Mercedes recall letters are expected to be mailed November 11, 2022. Dealerships will make sure the rear window trim bars are secured.

Audi Q3 Fuel Tank recall issued to possibly replace tanks

An Audi Q3 fuel tank recall has been announced for more than 13,000 SUVs that may have damaged vent pipes within the gas tanks.

The recalled 2021-2022 Audi Q3 vent pipes may have been damaged due to sharp edges on the tools used to grip parts in position during assembly. A damaged fuel tank vent pipe could allow fuel to spill from the filler neck when the gas cap is opened.

The automaker discovered the problem in March while trying to refuel several Audi Q3 SUVs, and in April customers began complaining about fuel spilling from the filler necks.

The fuel filler cap may leak if fuel enters the vent pipe and rises to the gas cap due to pressure in the gas tank. In addition to fuel spilling out of the filler neck when removing the cap, a driver may have trouble with the pump kicking off when trying to add fuel to the tank. No crashes or injuries have been reported, but Audi is aware of about 200 warranty claims related to the fuel tanks.

Audi Q3 fuel tank recall letters will be mailed November 4, 2022, and dealers will check the vent pipes for damage and possibly replace the charcoal canisters and the fuel tanks. The internal vent pipe will be checked for damage by pressurizing the fuel tank. The fuel tank and the charcoal canister will then be replaced if gas spills out the fuel filler neck.

Ford recalls Bronco Sports and F-150s over Flickering Lights

Ford has recalled more than 86,000 Bronco Sport and F-150 vehicles because the parking lights may flicker when the headlights are turned on. The recalled 2022-2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022 Ford F-150 trucks violate federal lighting safety standards.

Ford told the government the parking lights could flicker:

  • When the customer manually selects the “position lamp on” mode.
  • When the customer manually selects “headlamp on” mode.
  • When the customer is driving in automatic headlamp mode and the environment gets dark enough to trigger “night mode.”
"The frequency of operation of the LED driver module is currently 200Hz. At 200Hz, the lamp is susceptible to flickering due to insufficient capacitance on the capacitor when operating between 2.95 and 3.14 volts and the lamp has LED string voltage greater than 12.5 volts." — Ford
A Ford plant noticed the light problem in July during a Bronco Sport audit, followed by more Bronco Sports with the same problem.

The automaker found the lighting problem coincided with an LED driver module part change from version 4.1L to version 4.2. Ford says it is not aware of any crash or injury reports.

Ford plans on mailing recall letters October 31, 2022, and Ford dealers will replace or reprogram the LED driver modules.

Kia Tow Hitch recall issued after Fires and Melting incidents

A Kia tow hitch recall has caused Kia to warn owners to park outside and away from anything that could burn. According to Kia, a vehicle could catch fire while driving or while parked with the ignition off.

The Kia tow hitch recall includes more than 70,000 of these vehicles equipped with tow hitch harnesses installed as original equipment or purchased as accessories through Kia dealerships. Kia tow hitch recall documents filed with the government say a short-circuit could occur due to debris and moisture contamination on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board.

Kia is still trying to determine the origin of the circuit board contamination, but a short-circuit can cause a fire in the tow hitch harness module. A Kia tow hitch recall has already been issued in August for Tellurides following fire reports, but the automaker also received "several" fire allegations for other Kia Sorentos.

In July, Kia issued technical service bulletin (TSB) ELE261 entitled, "Trailer Hitch Accessory Fuse Requirement," to remind dealers to use the required 15-amp fuse when installing a trailer hitch accessory.

The tow hitch module supplier did CT scans of a 2016 Kia Sorento and found damage on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board. And in September Kia confirmed three car fires and 30 localized melting incidents on 2016-2020 Kia Sorentos. The latest Kia tow hitch recall was issued after it was determined the suspect harness module is used in the recalled Kia models.

As of September 12, no fires or localized melting involved the 2021-2023 Kia Sorento HEV, 2022-2023 Kia Sorento PHEV or 2017-2022 Kia Sportage. Kia also says there have been no reports of fatalities, injuries or crashes.

Kia is still working on a fix, but Kia tow hitch recall letters will be mailed November 14, 2022.

Tesla to issue 1 Million over-the-air Updates for Window problems

Tesla is recalling more than 1 million vehicles because the automatic reversal systems for the windows may not perform correctly if obstructions are detected. The recall includes 2017-2022 Tesla Model 3, 2020-2022 Tesla Model Y and 2021-2022 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles.

According to Tesla, the window may exert more force on an object (like a finger) before retracting than legally allowed by safety standards. Tesla was testing the vehicles in August when technicians found problems with the window automatic reversal systems related to pinch detection.

Tesla conducted multiple additional tests using various models and determined the "pinch detection and retraction performance" in the test results exceeded the requirements regarding automatic reversal systems. A Tesla over-the-air firmware update will be sent to the Tesla vehicles that improves the calibration of the vehicle’s automatic window reversal system behavior in all loading conditions.

Tesla expects to mail recall letters November 5, 2022, but owners won't need to visit dealers because the over-the-air software updates will fix the problem.

Nissan recalls Kicks and Versa vehicles for Power Steering Loss

A Nissan power steering recall involves more than 20,000 Kicks and Versas that may need new steering columns. The power steering recall includes 2021 Nissan Kicks and 2021 Nissan Versa vehicles that may suffer electrical connection problems in the electric power steering torque sensors. The faulty electrical connection can disable the power steering assist.

A power steering failure will cause a warning light to illuminate and the steering will revert to manual mode, making the wheel more difficult to turn. Losing power steering at highway speeds may not be a big deal, but at slow speeds a driver could have trouble. However, manual steering is not lost.

Nissan opened an investigation in December 2021 after a 2021 Versa lost power steering, an incident that was similar to another report of a Nissan Kicks in Mexico that lost power steering. Nissan collected parts from dealerships and engineers found possible problems with the torque sensors.

The supplier confirmed a faulty weld at the terminal within the torque sensor and determined the weld may have disconnected.

The 2021 Nissan Versa and Nissan Kicks vehicles were built July 19, 2021, to September 27, 2021.

Nissan plans on mailing power steering recall letters November 9, 2022, and Nissan dealers will inspect the steering column torque sensor lot codes and possibly replace the steering columns.

GM Backup Camera recall involves Cadillac and GMC vehicles

A General Motors backup camera recall includes more than 95,000 Cadillac and GMC vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision features. The GM backup camera recall involves 2020-2021 Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 and GMC Acadia vehicles.

Those models are equipped with rearview camera coaxial cable connectors that may not have been crimped properly, causing the backup cameras to fail, or they may function just part of the time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Cadillac and GMC backup camera failures in July. Vehicle owners complained the rearview camera screens turned black and red triangles with circles appeared on the screens.

GM previously investigated rearview camera-related complaints involving the same vehicles in July 2020. GM closed the investigation based on evidence which indicated the rate of field complaints was low and there were no vehicle crashes.

The automaker also noted the backup camera performance was checked both at the end of the assembly line and at dealer pre-delivery inspections. Once NHTSA opened its investigation, GM opened a second investigation and engineers found the rate of complaints had increased, a lot.

GM expects to mail backup camera recall letters in November 7, 2022, and dealerships will replace the coaxial cables once they have replacement cables.

Dodge Journeys recalled for Reflex Reflector issues

A Dodge Journey recall has been announced to fix problems with the amber side reflex reflectors in the headlight assemblies. However, Chrysler isn't sure what dealers will do to repair more than 83,000 SUVs.

The recalled 2017-2018 Dodge Journey SUV reflectors may not reflect brightly enough, something that violates federal safety standards.

Fiat Chrysler opened an investigation in December 2018 following an audit of a Dodge Journey front amber side reflex reflector performed by Transport Canada.

Chrysler couldn't find any warranty claims, complaints, field reports, crashes or injuries, so the automaker filed a petition for inconsequential treatment with the government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration denied the petition and requested a formal recall.

The Dodge SUVs were built August 2, 2017, to July 6, 2018. FCA expects to mail Dodge Journey recall letters November 8, 2022.
