Ford recalls Super Duty Trucks over Steering Wheel Clock Springs
Ford is recalling more than 310,000 model year 2016 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks to replace the steering wheel clock springs. According to Ford, the driver-side airbag may fail if dust builds up in the steering wheel clock springs and disconnects the electrical connections.

Ford learned of a problem in October 2021 when a Super Duty steering wheel clock spring warranty claim was reviewed after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted Ford.

NHTSA had received reports related to either the clock springs or the steering column control modules. Engineers determined simple dust particles could cause the electrical problems that cause airbag failures. Engineers also discovered the symptoms are progressive and begin with popping and clicking noise.

If dust contaminates the clock spring, it could cause increased friction of the internal ribbon cable that rotates with the steering wheel, causing a disconnection of some or all the ribbon circuits. A disconnected ribbon can break the electrical connection to the front driver's airbag and activate the airbag warning light. The airbag will fail to deploy in a crash.

A Ford driver may notice a popping or clicking sound inside the steering wheel, loss of illumination and function of switches on the steering wheel and the horn may fail to operate.

Ford says the F-Series steering wheel clock springs were introduced into production in December 2014 for model year 2016 trucks. The steering wheel clock spring recall affects 153,307 Ford F-250s, 98,765 Ford F-350s, 21,113 Ford F-450s and 37,018 Ford F-550 trucks in the U.S.

Ford says it is unaware of any crash or injury reports. Ford Super Duty truck recall notices are expected to be mailed July 5, 2022.

Dealers will replace the steering wheel clock springs in the 2016 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks.

Mitsubishi Outlander recall issued for Seat Belt problems
A 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander seat belt recall affects nearly 3,000 SUVs with automatic locking retractors in the right front, second-row right and second-row left seat belt assemblies that may deactivate before the seat belts are fully retracted. This will be a problem when using a child restraint system that won't be secured due to the retractor problems.

Mitsubishi blames the problem on a bearing plate located inside the seat belt automatic locking retractor that may not meet specifications. This can cause the retractor to deactivate before the seat belt webbing is completely retracted. In addition to causing a problem with securing a child safety seat, the defect also violates federal safety standards.

In February 2022, Mitsubishi discovered automatic locking retractor malfunctions with seat belts on two Outlander SUVs at an assembly plant in Japan. In March the automaker found the same seat belt problems on two more Outlanders at the same assembly plant.

The supplier, Autoliv, provided Mitsubishi with results of an investigation which indicated the bearing plates in the Outlander seat belts were manufactured out of specification. The root problem was traced to inappropriate maintenance of an injection mould die at the subcomponent supplier.

According to Mitsubishi, there have been no warranty claims or field reports related to the Outlander seat belt automatic locking retractors. Mitsubishi will mail Outlander recall letters June 23, 2022.

Mitsubishi dealers will inspect the right front, second-row right and second-row left seat belt assemblies and check for certain lot numbers related to the bearing plates. Dealers will replace seat belt assemblies if necessary.

Hyundai Pretensioner recall affects Accent and Elantra
A Hyundai seat belt pretensioner recall includes about 281,000 Accent, Elantra and Elantra Hybrid cars with pretensioners at risk of exploding when they deploy. The recall affects both front seat pretensioners, and any Hyundai Accent, Elantra and Elantra Hybrid vehicles that have already been recalled for the same problem will need to be repaired again. Seat belt pretensioners deploy in a crash and work in conjunction with airbags to better secure occupants.

The Hyundai pretensioner recall involves 2019-2022 Accent, 2021-2023 Elantra and 2021-2022 Elantra Hybrid vehicles equipped with front driver and passenger pyrotechnic-type seat belt pretensioners that could explode and send metal fragments throughout the cars, and the occupants. Hyundai is aware of three crashes that deployed the pretensioners and caused injuries.

Even though this Hyundai pretensioner recall follows previous recalls for the same problem, the automaker says a "specific root cause has not yet been determined."

In September 2021, Hyundai learned about a crash involving a 2021 Hyundai Elantra where the driver-side seat belt pretensioner allegedly deployed abnormally and caused metal fragments to enter the rear cabin and injure an occupant’s leg. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was notified of the incident by a law firm representing the driver of the Elantra.

Hyundai decided to order a seat belt pretensioner recall in October 2021 even though engineers hadn't determined the cause of the explosion. Then Hyundai learned of another pretensioner explosion on a 2020 Accent in December 2021, and Hyundai determined the pretensioner was produced 13 months prior to the production lot involved in the recall.
This caused an expansion of the Hyundai pretensioner recall that was originally announced in 2021.

But in February 2022, Hyundai learned of a Singapore crash that caused the pretensioner to explode and injure an occupant in a 2022 Elantra. However, engineers discovered the pretensioner was from completely separate production lots involved in the two recalls. Hyundai hired a third-party engineering company to help with the investigation and testing indicates that applying a cap should prevent the pretensioner from exploding.

The U.S. Hyundai pretensioner recall includes about 239,000 vehicles, and a recall in Canada involves about 42,000 cars. Hyundai pretensioner recall notices are expected to be mailed July 15, 2022, and dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with caps at the micro gas generators and delivery pipes.

According to Hyundai, the caps will secure the pretensioner micro gas generators to assure proper gas deployment.

Mercedes eCall recall issued over SIM card failures

A Mercedes eCall recall includes more than 254,000 vehicles equipped with emergency call systems that may fail due to errors in the SIM card software of the communication modules. The problem can cause the mobile network connections to fail, leaving Mercedes occupants unable to use the systems in emergencies.
The Mercedes eCall recall affects numerous models.

  • 2019-2021 Freightliner Sprinter
  • 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class
  • 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class
According to Mercedes, if the error occurs the communication module would not be able to establish a connection with a mobile phone network which will delay any required emergency response.

In February 2020, Mercedes received the first report outside the U.S. regarding a disabled SIM card that disabled the eCall system. An investigation was opened with the supplier after more eCall failure complaints were received.

Seven months later the sub-supplier of the SIM card was able to confirm a triggered security mechanism was the root cause of the disabled SIM cards, but engineers still needed to determine what triggered the security mechanism. The sub-supplier confirmed what was occurring with the SIM cards and Mercedes decided to issue the recall. Drivers will have no clue of eCall problems until the systems are needed.

Mercedes-Benz eCall recall letters are expected to be mailed June 20, 2022, for the Freightliner Sprinter and Mercedes-Benz Metris and Sprinter vans, and eCall recall notices for the remaining vehicles will be mailed July 19, 2022.

The Mercedes eCall communication module software will be updated through over-the-air (OTA) updates or by dealers.

Mercedes recalls ML, GL and R-Class due to braking issue
Mercedes has issued a global recall affecting almost one million of the cars it has sold globally since 2004, citing a potential issue with the brakes.

Owners of M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class models have been advised by Mercedes not to drive their cars until they’ve been inspected.

Mercedes has issued a statement saying it has contacted owners of potentially affected vehicles, starting the recall process immediately.

The German firm also said the issue was specifically due to the brakes, stating “the function of the brake booster might be affected by advanced corrosion in the joint area of the housing.”

Mercedes also said the recall “will involve inspecting potentially affected vehicles and, depending on the results of the inspection, replacing the parts where necessary. Until the inspection takes place, we ask our customers not to drive their vehicles.”

The cars included in the recall were built between 2004 and 2015. Although it is not known how many vehicles in the UK could suffer the fault, 993,407 cars could be affected worldwide.

The M-Class badge was used on the predecessor to the model now known as the GLE, while the GL-Class name was used on the marque’s flagship until its rebranding as GLS in 2016.

Ford Mustangs recalled for Backup Light and Camera failures
A Ford Mustang recall has been announced for nearly 29,000 cars equipped with 5.0L engines and manual transmissions.

The powertrain control modules may send out fault signals by mistake and cause failures of the backup cameras, backup lights and the driver-assist features.

According to Ford, 2019-2020 Mustangs need updates to the powertrain control module software to keep the backup cameras and lights working, in addition to preventing the loss of traction control, forward collision warning, blind spot warning and cross traffic indicator systems. A Mustang driver may see a warning light activate and a message about which features have failed.

In July 2020, Ford engineers notices increased warranty claims related to 5-liter manual gear position sensors that caused the backup lights and rearview cameras to fail. Engineers opened an investigation but closed it when Ford said the incident rate was low. So the automaker decided to monitor the field for any increase in warranty claims which caused Ford to reopen the investigation in April 2022.

As of March 25, more than 100 Mustang warranty claims have been filed regarding failures of backup cameras and reverse lights. Another 94 warranty claims were filed related to traction control, forward collision warning, blind spot warning and cross traffic indicator failures.

Ford didn't announce how many claims have been received to date, but the automaker says it is unaware of any crash or injury reports. About 3,500 of the recalled Ford Mustangs are in Canada.

Ford expects to mail Mustang recall notices June 13, 2022.

Ford Label problems cause Truck and Van recall

Ford is recalling nearly 6,000 vehicles equipped with safety certification labels that are missing the tire size, rim type and tire pressure values for both the front and rear axles.
The recalled Ford vehicles include these models in the U.S. and Canada.

  • 2022 Ford F-250
  • 2022 Ford F-350
  • 2022 Ford F-450
  • 2022 Ford F-550
  • 2022 Ford F-600
  • 2023 Ford E-Series
  • 2016 Ford E-Series
  • 2017 and 2019 Ford F-450
  • 2021 Ford F-350
  • 2021 Ford Transit
In addition to the danger of not knowing the correct tire pressure, rim size, etc., the labels violate federal safety standards.

Ford first got notice of the label problem from an upfitter, and Ford learned the problem affects vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of over and under 10,000 pounds. But federal safety standards require the tire size and rim information to be displayed on the labels for non-passenger cars of less than 10,000 pounds.

Those standards also require the tire size, recommended cold inflation pressure and rim size to be displayed on either the safety certification label or TREAD label for a vehicle greater than 10,000 pounds. The automaker blames the problem on a software change at the label supplier’s printing facility.

Ford says it isn't aware of any crash or injury reports.

Ford recall letters are expected to be mailed June 27, 2022, and dealerships will replace the labels.

Ford Gear Shifter Bushing recall affects 3.3 million vehicles

A Ford gear shifter cable bushing recall involves more than 3.3 million of these vehicles at risk of rolling away even when shifted into PARK.
  • 2013-2019 Ford Escape
  • 2013-2018 Ford C-Max
  • 2013-2016 Ford Fusion
  • 2013-2021 Ford Transit Connect
  • 2015-2018 Ford Edge
In addition to the rollaway danger, Ford says a damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear. The problematic parts are Hilex Hytrel 4556 shifter cable bushings that have caused Ford issues in the past.

According to Ford, vehicles not included in previous recalls were suffering problems with the bushings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also notified Ford about shifter problems, although Ford says the failure claim rates remained low. Ford also says the projected failure rate was low, but a recall was issued to include all vehicles equipped with Hilex Hytrel 4556 shifter cable bushings.

Even though several recalls have been issued, Ford says it doesn't know the root cause of the defect. But engineers believe the bushing may fail due to damage from heat and humidity.

If the Ford ignition is on, the instrument panel will show the correct transmission gear state but it may not match the gear shift lever position. The driver may also notice the problem if they attempt to shift to the intended gear and the vehicle responds differently than intended. And once the vehicle is shut off with the gear shift lever in PARK, the transmission may not be in PARK which will prevent the engine from starting.

Ford expects to mail shifter cable bushing recall letters June 27, 2022. Ford dealers will replace the shifter bushings and add protective caps over the shift cable bushings.

According to Ford, the replacement bushings are made from a different grade material that uses a heat stabilizer. And the cap added to the bushing will allegedly help to protect against contaminates.

Chrysler CP4 Fuel Pump recall includes Jeeps and Rams
A Fiat Chrysler (FCA) CP4 fuel pump recall has been announced for nearly 195,000 model year 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines.

The recall, which includes Jeeps and Rams in the U.S. and Canada, was issued because the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pumps may fail and send debris into the fuel systems. This can shut down the vehicles due to fuel starvation.

Chrysler opened an investigation in February after reports of stalled vehicles. The investigation included 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3-liter diesel engines that were stalling from Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump failures.

Jeep and Ram drivers may see warning lights, smell or see fuel leaks or possibly hear noise coming from the Bosch CP4.2 fuel pumps.

FCA isn't aware of any crash or injury reports, but the automaker has received more than 1,000 warranty claims and 215 customer assistance records. The FCA fuel pump recall includes nearly 56,000 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles in Canada.

Chrysler expects to mail CP4.2 fuel pump recall letters July 29, 2022, and dealers will replace the Bosch fuel pumps and possibly replace other fuel system components.

Ford Bronco recall issued for Child Safety locks
Ford has recalled more than 53,000 model year 2021-2022 four-door Bronco SUVs because the passenger-side rear doors may be opened from the inside when the child safety locks are engaged. This makes the rear passenger child safety lock useless for its intended purpose even though the lock says, "ON."

According to Ford, an investigation was opened in March following reports of 2021-2022 Bronco child safety locks that weren't working. Engineers found instances where the Ford Bronco passenger-side rear doors could be opened with the child safety locks engaged. Ford quarantined the Broncos and found 1.5% exhibiting the condition on rear right-hand latches and no reports on rear left-hand latches.

The rear door latch module supplier also inspected the components because the rear door latch module includes the child safety lock mechanism. The supplier inspection found the child safety locks worked as intended prior to installation in the sheet metal doors.

Ford engineers also found the left-hand rear door sheet metal attachment hole locations were out of design specification, but at a level that did not affect child safety lock performance on the left-hand rear doors. Ford is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to the Bronco child safety locks.

Ford Bronco recall letters are expected to be mailed July 25, 2022. Ford dealerships will inspect the rear passenger-side child safety locks and latches and replace them if needed.

Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs recalled for losing Drive Power

Ford has recalled 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles because the high-voltage battery main contacts may overheat and leave drivers with no drive power. Ford says it can repair the problem by performing software updates on about 49,000 Mustang Mach-E SUVs.

According to Ford, direct current (DC) fast charging and repeated wide open accelerator pedal events can cause the high-voltage battery main contactors to overheat. This can cause electrical arcing and deformed contact surfaces which lead to the electric relay switch remaining open or a relay switch that welds closed from heat. This will cause a complete and sudden loss of Mustang Mach-E motive power.

Ford says the problem is the high-voltage battery main contact that isn't strong enough to handle the heat during DC fast charging or when a driver uses the accelerator pedal wide open. Ford first learned of the problem in April and eventually found at least 286 warranty claims in the U.S. related to open or welded battery contacts.

A Ford Mustang Mach-E driver may see an illuminated powertrain warning light and a “Stop Safely Now" message when the SUV loses power. It's also possible the SUV won't be capable of starting.

Honda Ridgeline Frame rust recall: Buybacks possible
A Honda Ridgeline frame rust recall includes more than 144,000 model year 2006-2014 Ridgeline trucks originally sold in these states where road salt is applied in cold weather.

Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin.

A Honda Ridgeline frame recall includes nearly 32,000 trucks. Road salt, deicing agents and mud and dirt can build up on the Ridgeline rear frame where the fuel tank is mounted to the truck. Corrosion can damage the frame mounting surface where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached. This can cause the mounting bands to detach.

Honda Ridgeline fuel tanks can become damaged if the tanks are loose, possibly causing fuel to leak from the tanks and increasing the risk of fires.

According to Honda, it is unaware of any Ridgeline fuel leaks, fires, crashes or injuries. Honda continues to investigate the Ridgeline frame rust problems and says the recall may need to be expanded based on a search of historical registration data.

Honda plans on mailing Honda Ridgeline recall letters August 1, 2022. Honda dealers will inspect the frame rust and choose from various repairs. Some Honda Ridgeline trucks may only need certain components reinforced.

Toyota recalls Tundras with Axle problems

A 2022 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid recall involves about 46,000 trucks because of axle problems.

The Tundra trucks have rear axle nuts that can loosen and fall off, causing the axle shaft sub-assembly to detach from the axle. A Tundra driver will have stability and braking problems if separation occurs.

The 2022 Tundras need their axle flange nuts tightened and it's possible other components will be replaced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not released information about the Toyota Tundra recall.
