Ford recalls F-Series Trucks over backup camera problems

A Ford backup camera recall involves about 22,000 of these F-Series trucks due to faulty electrical connections inside the rearview cameras.

  • 2019 Ford F-150
  • 2019 Ford F-250
  • 2019 Ford F-350
  • 2019 Ford F-450
  • 2019 Ford F-550
According to Ford, the truck backup camera, manufactured by Magna Electronics, may cause the display screen to show a blank or distorted image due to electrical problems in the printed circuit board (PCB) within the rearview camera.

"The analog camera female terminals within the PCB header inside the rearview camera move beyond their yield strength and deform when the male pins were inserted." — Ford
Ford dealers will replace the rearview cameras once recall notices are mailed in May 2022.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a Ford backup camera investigation in August 2021 after Ford rearview camera problems caused a backup camera recall of 620,000 Ford vehicles in 2020.

Although F-Series trucks were included in the September 2020 backup camera recall, only 2020 model year vehicles were recalled.

Ford didn't announce if this most recent backup camera recall of 2019 trucks is connected to the federal investigation, but the affected cameras in all cases were manufactured by Magna Electronics.

Ford recalls 2022 F-150 trucks for Steering Column problems

Ford has trouble with more than 19,000 model year 2022 F-150 trucks equipped with power-adjustable telescoping steering columns.

Ford says the F-150 steering column connector wiring may be too short and could be damaged if the steering column is fully extended. This could prevent the telescoping steering column from moving as intended in a crash. Specifically, the steering column may not collapse as intended in a crash.

Ford learned of an issue in February regarding damaged steering column squib connector wires. A search of field data found reports about 2022 Ford F-150s that had their airbag warning lights illuminate.

Engineers found this can be a symptom of damaged steering column wiring. Ford technicians had also filed repair reports indicating dealerships fixed the problem by installing new steering column pigtail harnesses and connectors.

Ford also noticed an increase in warranty claims that by April 5 had reached 69 warranty reports. According to Ford, it isn't aware of any crash or injury reports related to the steering column wiring.

Ford F-150 steering column recall letters are expected to be mailed May 9, 2022. Dealers will inspect and repair the telescoping steering column wiring harnesses.

Ford recalls F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty Trucks

2020-ford-super-duty-transmission-recall-250.png
A Ford Super Duty truck recall involves more than 23,000 vehicles at risk of transmission problems that could cause the trucks to roll away. Recalled are 2020 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks equipped with 6.7L diesel engines.

According to Ford, the pinion thrust washer within the 10R140 transmission planetary four carrier assembly can disintegrate and cause metallic debris to contaminate the gearset and damage the gear teeth. The metallic debris can also get lodged in the transmission’s mechanical park pawl mechanism and prevent the Ford truck from holding PARK.

Ford began receiving reports in January about 2020 Super Duty trucks equipped with 6.7L diesel engines. Ford and the supplier investigated the problem and determined the first known report of a broken P4 thrust washer which caused gearset damage and a roll-in-PARK condition was received on December 8, 2020.

Ford also says as of March 15, at least 66 reports had been filed about broken thrust washers.

A driver may notice "harsh shifting, a grinding, groaning, or popping noise. Additionally, a malfunction indicator light may illuminate, and customers may experience a possible loss of motive power depending upon the extent of damage to the P4 gear teeth."

The 2020 Super Duty trucks were built in Kentucky between October 1, 2019, and September 21, 2020, and in Ohio from October 30, 2019, through July 23, 2020.

Ford Super Duty truck recall notices are expected to be mailed May 30, 2022, and Ford dealers will replace a gearset inside the transmission.

According to BMW, the sunroof function control unit may be programmed incorrectly and allow the sunroof to close without the key fob present inside the vehicle. The recalled BMW vehicles are equipped with an auto-reversal / anti-trap system, but someone could be injured if the sunroof is closed without the key fob present in the vehicle.

The automaker learned of the problem in March during internal testing. Engineers determined the sunroof software was incorrect for vehicles manufactured for U.S. customers. BMW says it has not received any crash or injury reports related to the sunroof issue.

BMW dealerships will reprogram the sunroof function control units once recall notices are mailed in June 2022.

Ford Explorers recalled over Driveshaft failures
A Ford Explorer recall includes more than 252,000 vehicles because the driveshafts may disconnect and allow the Explorers to roll away.

Recalled are these vehicles with rear axle horizontal mounting bolts that may break and cause the driveshafts to disconnect.

  • 2020-2021 Ford Explorer Police Hybrid Electric
  • 2020-2021 Ford Explorer Police 3.3L
  • 2020-2022 Ford Explorer 2.3L RWD
  • 2020-2022 Ford Explorer Plug-in Hybrid Electric 3.0L
  • 2020-2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid Electric 3.0L
  • 2020-2022 Ford Explorer ST3 3L
Ford engineers saw a problem with 2020-2021 Explorers in August 2021 when rear axle mounting bolts were breaking. Engineers had to investigate the differences between power packs and the effects on the Explorers, finding the vehicles could lose their ability to stay in PARK.

Ford engineering confirmed a police Explorer is built with a cable and would require a hardware change to avoid the loss of PARK, unlike a consumer Explorer which is built with electronic park brake software that requires a software update to avoid a loss of PARK.

"Powertrain torque through the driveline causes axle rotation of the pinion angled towards the subframe, which exerts a bending force on the rear axle bolt. Peak torque is normally experienced during a launch event. After numerous peak torque events are experienced, the bolt may suffer a fatigue failure, which will lead to the axle housing moving out of position, resulting in a condition described by customers and dealer technicians variably as loud, grinding, binding, or clunking noises." — Ford
Dakkota, the rear module supplier, made corrections during production and implemented new torque tools.

Ford is not aware of any crash or injury reports, but as of April 5 there have been 235 warranty claims involving the rear axle bolts.

Depending on the Explorer model, dealers will either replace the bushing and axle covers or update the electronic parking brake software.

Ford Explorer recall letters are expected to be mailed June 6, 2022.

Tesla Model 3 Performance cars recalled

Tesla is recalling more than 48,000 Model 3 Performance cars because the speedometers may fail while in Track Mode.

The 2018-2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance cars are designed to increase performance on a closed track, and the user interface may correctly display the speed but not a unit of speed, such as mph or km/h.

Federal safety standard 101 S5.2 requires a correct unit of speed to be displayed, and Tesla is in violation of the standard because Track Mode can be used outside of a closed course.

Tesla began deploying over-the-air firmware release 2021.44.25 on December 23, 2021, but it unintentionally removed the speed unit when using Track Mode.

Tesla discovered the problem in March 2022 and began working on a fix, and in April the automaker determined the speedometer problem violated safety standards.
Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the speedometer issue.

The Model 3 Performance cars will be repaired by over-the-air software updates. Tesla owners should watch for recall notices in June 2022.

Porsche Taycans recalled for Front Seat Wire harnesses

A Porsche Taycan recall involves more than 9,500 model year 2020-2021 Taycans with front driver and passenger seat wire harnesses may be damaged from using the horizontal seat adjustments.

A damaged front seat wire harness can deactivate the Taycan airbags. Porsche learned about several Taycan seat adjustment complaints that were caused by the fabric sheath getting caught in the seat adjustment mechanism.

Porsche began monitoring Taycan complaints but didn't find any complaints about damaged wire harnesses. But between January and April 2022, Porsche learned of three complaints about damaged wire harnesses and illuminated airbag warning lights in Taycans outside the U.S., convincing the automaker to issue the recall.

Taycan occupants may notice problems with the front seat adjustments or hear strange noise when adjusting the seats. A driver will know the airbags are affected if they see an illuminated red airbag warning light.

Porsche dealers will inspect the the seat wire harnesses for damage and textile fabric tape will be added to further secure the harnesses under the seats and help prevent damage to the harnesses when adjusting the seats.

Porsche Taycan recall notices are expected to be mailed June 24, 2022

Toyota Tundra recall issued for Rearview Camera Image failures
A 2022 Toyota Tundra recall of more than 18,000 trucks has been announced for Tundras equipped with Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) systems. The 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks have parking assist electronic control unit (ECU) software which may prevent transmission of the rearview camera signal during cold weather.

This will prevent the rearview images from displaying on the screens. The Panoramic View Monitor system uses multiple individual cameras located around the vehicle and a parking assist ECU. The PVM system uses the parking assist ECU to activate the signals for each of these cameras to display an image.

But due to incorrect programming of the parking assist ECU software, one or more of the camera signals may exceed the voltage threshold when the Tundra is started in cold weather. Toyota learned about three Tundra rearview camera image failures in January that all occurred during cold weather. The supplier and Toyota investigated the effects of cold weather on the camera systems.

Engineers saw the camera signal voltage was exceeding the allowable threshold resulting in the parking assist ECU recognizing the camera as being in abnormal status which created a loss of signal transmission. It was further found that any of the PVM cameras, including the rearview camera, could be subject to the condition.

In addition to leaving a Tundra driver without the ability to see behind the truck when backing up, the camera image failures also violate federal safety standards.

Toyota Tundra owners should watch for recall notices that will be mailed May 30, 2022. Toyota dealers will reprogram the parking assist ECU software.

Tesla Infotainment Screen failures cause recall
Tesla infotainment system problems have caused a recall of nearly 130,000 model year 2021-2022 Model S, Model X and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles operating certain firmware releases.

Tesla says the central processing unit (CPU) for the infotainment system may not cool down to prevent higher than expected temperatures during fast charging or preparation for fast charging.

This can cause the CPU to restart which can cause the center screen to lag or go blank.

Tesla discovered the problem during routine temperature endurance testing on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in December 2021. An investigation was opened and a 2021 Model S in the field had a center screen that kept rebooting during supercharging.

More vehicles suffered the same problem and all the CPUs were shipped to Tesla engineers for testing.

The automaker confirmed the root cause of the problem in April 2022 and which models were affected. Tesla also confirmed 59 warranty claims and 59 field reports (received between January 5, 2022, and May 2, 2022) for U.S. vehicles.

However, Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the infotainment screen problems.

Tesla will mail recall notices July 1, 2022, and perform an over-the-air software update that will improve CPU temperature management.

Hyundai Sonata Fuel Hose recall issued
A Hyundai Sonata fuel hose recall includes more than 215,000 cars that could experience fuel leaks and fires.

The 2013-2014 Sonatas have low-pressure fuel hoses that connect the low-pressure fuel pumps to the direct injection fuel pumps. But the fuel hoses on the older cars may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartments.

In February 2020, Kia recalled Optimas and Hyundai recalled Sonatas due to fuel hose leaks, then in February 2022 Kia again recalled the 2013-2014 Kia Optimas because the low-pressure fuel hoses were damaged or missing heat protection tape. The tape was part of the 2020 Optima recall remedy.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata fuel hose recall remedy included inspection of the fuel feed line connecting the low-pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump for damage or fuel leaks. The fuel hose was replaced if leaks were detected, but heat-resistant tape was applied at the fuel hose and fuel pump if no leaks were found.

Hyundai reviewed 2013-2014 Sonata warranty claims that had received the tape remedy in 2020 and found the tape and zip-ties were applied in 2020 but leaks continued. Engineers also discovered fuel hoses with remedy parts missing.

Hyundai also found 138 Sonata fuel hose leak reports received from July 30, 2020, to April 18, 2022, in the U.S.market. However, there have been reports of crashes, fires or injuries in the U.S.

Hyundai Sonata owners should be aware of fuel odors. Hyundai Sonata fuel hose recall notices are expected to be mailed July 5, 2022. The Sonata fuel hoses will be replaced by dealerships, and Sonatas that did not have the hoses replaced in 2020 will need to be repaired again.

Mercedes recalls 292,287 models for possible Brake failure
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Mercedes-Benz are advising owners of the 2006-2012 model years of the ML-, GL-, and R-Class (gallery below) not to drive the models until a recall repair is complete. This campaign affects 292,287 vehicles in the United States. Mercedes knows of no crashes, injuries, or deaths from this problem.

"We are advising affected customers to stop driving their vehicles. MBUSA will also offer complimentary towing to owners of affected vehicles to attend the workshop,"

These vehicles may have corroded brake boosters that could severely affect their braking ability. It's also possible for the booster to leak, resulting in more force being necessary on the pedal to slow the affected vehicles. In particularly severe cases, hard stopping could damage the booster and cause the brake pedal to stop working entirely.

NHTSA's statement indicates that signs of a vehicle with a corroded brake booster include the brake pedal might have a different feeling than normal. Another indicator is a hissing or airflow noise when applying the brakes. To solve the issue, Mercedes will inspect the affected vehicles. According to its filing with NHTSA:

"Vehicles that show advanced corrosion will have an additional test performed to ensure the functionality of the brake booster. Vehicles that pass the additional test may be driven for up to two years but must return for an additional repair."

If a model doesn't pass the additional test, Mercedes will replace the brake booster. If the parts aren't immediately available, the dealer will arrange for alternate transportation for the customer.

Hyundai recalls Ioniq 5 SUVs after Rollaway incidents
Hyundai has recalled its 2022 Ioniq 5 SUVs to fix software errors that can cause the vehicles to roll away. Nearly 11,000 owners of 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles are warned to use the electronic parking brakes until dealers repair the Ioniq 5 SUVs.

The problem is a software error in the shifter control unit that may disengage the parking mechanism. The SUVs are equipped with shift-by-wire systems which contain shifter control units and electronic parking pawl actuators.

According to Hyundai, a voltage fluctuation may occur when the Ioniq 5 is shut off and in PARK. Hyundai says the parking pawl can suffer a "momentary disengagement" of the parking pawl. This is what can cause the Ioniq 5 to suddenly roll away.

Hyundai opened an investigation in May following four warranty claims related to 2022 Ioniq 5 vehicles in South Korea. Owners reported the vehicles rolled away after parking on inclines and turning off the ignitions.

Engineers found changes in the voltage could disengage the parking pawl, and Hyundai also determined 2023 Genesis GV60 and G80 electric vehicles used the same electronic parking pawl actuators. However, these vehicles have not yet been released for sale to U.S. dealers.

Hyundai says it is unaware of any crashes, injuries or rollaway incidents in the U.S. Hyundai expects to mail Ioniq 5 recall notices July 10, 2022, and dealerships will update the shifter control unit software.
