Ford recalls nearly 10,000 Bronco four-door SUVs over malfunctioning Child Safety Lock

Ford Bronco child safety lock problems have caused a recall of more than 10,000 model year 2023-2024 Ford Bronco 4-door vehicles. According to Ford, the left-side rear door may be opened from the inside when the child safety lock is in the "ON" position, the opposite of how the lock should function.

Ford says it tried to make the door more flush during production but mistakenly caused the location of the left-hand rear door latch reinforcement bracket to shift.

Ford opened an investigation in December 2023 following assembly plant reports of child safety locks that failed on 2023 Bronco four-door vehicles. Employees could open the rear left doors from the inside even when the child safety locks were in the ON positions. All Broncos were checked at the plant and nearly 2% had faulty rear left-hand child safety locks.

Engineers determined a sheet metal fixture improvement was completed on September 13, 2023, at the door sheet metal stamping plant to improve door flushness. But this caused the location of the latch reinforcement to shift, but not on the rear right-side Bronco doors.

The condition can be dangerous to second-row passengers, but Ford is unaware of any crash or injury reports. There have also been no warranty claims or field reports. Ford dealers will inspect the Bronco child safety locks and replace the rear door latches if needed. Ford expects to mail Bronco recall letters April 16, 2024.

Ram ProMaster vans recalled over warning lights and chimes

A 2022-2023 Ram ProMaster recall involves 30,000 vans because the driver's side seat belt warning light and audible chime may not activate as intended. Fiat Chrysler says the malfunctions violate federal safety standards.

Federal standards require a visible and audible warning when the ignition is moved to the on or start position and the driver's lap belt is not in use, or a visible warning when the ignition is moved to the on or start position.

This will be joined by a mandated continuous or intermittent audible signal when the driver's side seat belt is not latched. FCA also says the ProMaster van may incorrectly activate the warning system indicating the seat belt is unlatched when it is latched.

Chrysler learned of the problem in June 2022 when 2022-2023 Ram ProMaster van seat belt buckles were not indicating if they were latched. Engineers eventually traced the problem to "potentially faulty driver seat belt buckle switch sense magnets."

More than 2,000 of the ProMaster vans are recalled in Canada. Chrysler dealers will inspect and replace the driver seat belt buckle if necessary.

Ram ProMaster recall letters are expected to be mailed April 12, 2024.

Mercedes-Benz recalls SUVs for electrical problem that could lead to Fire

Mercedes-Benz is ordering a recall of 116,020 SUVs from several models, among which are vehicles produced by Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall is to fix an issue relating to a 48-volt ground system located under the front passenger seat.

Vehicles covered by the recall include the 2021–2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 and GLE63, 2021–2023 GLS63, 2023–2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE350, 2020–2024 GLE450, 2020–2023 GLE580, 2019–2023 GLS450, 2020–2023 GLS580, and the 2021–2023 Mercedes-Maybach GLS600.

The NHTSA documents explain that the ground on affected models may become loose under the passenger seat during production, which could lead to the ground connection overheating. In turn, the overheating connection may result in a fire. Of the vehicles involved in the recall, Mercedes estimates that 100 percent are potentially affected by the loose connection. The recall documents also state that due to the nature of the issue, drivers will not be warned by their vehicle unless the connection has already come loose; in which case, the vehicle may display a warning message in the instrument cluster relating to the 48-volt power supply.

Documents show that dealers will inspect and tighten the ground connection as necessary, free of charge, and that vehicles from the same model year but outside of the recall population are already bolted to production specifications. Dealers will be notified of the recall on March 22, while owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by May 14. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected.

Stellantis recalls nearly 318,000 cars to replace side air bags that can explode and hurl shrapnel

Stellantis is recalling nearly 318,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans worldwide because the side air bag inflators can explode with too much force and hurl metal fragments at drivers and passengers.
The recall covers air bag inflators on both sides of certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 large cars from the 2018 through 2021 model years.

The automaker says in documents posted Friday by US safety regulators that moisture may get into the inflators due to a manufacturing defect and cause corrosion and cracks. The air bags can inflate even without a crash due to high temperatures in the cabin, the company said. Stellantis has seven warranty claims and customer assistance reports but no reports of injuries, the documents said. Most of the recalled vehicles are in North America.

Dealers will replace both side air bag modules. Owners will be notified starting May 3. Stellantis said in a statement Friday that owners who are concerned about driving their cars should contact the company. It would not say if loaner vehicles would be offered.

The inflators are made by Joyson Safety Systems, a company that ended up acquiring Japanese air bag maker Takata after its bankruptcy. Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate front air bags in a crash. The chemical propellant can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel.

Stellantis said the recalled side air bags don’t use the same propellant or inflator design as previously recalled Takata air bags. In five cases investigated by the company, the air bags inflated while the vehicles were parked when the cabin temperature was above 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius).

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis recall over 147K EVs for Potential Power Loss

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have issued a recall for 147,110 electric vehicles, according to documents filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall centers around a damaged charging unit; the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) might stop charging the 12-volt battery, possibly leading to a loss of power to the wheels. A variety of EVs are affected.

Hyundai will recall 98,878 models, which include EVs from the company's Genesis luxury brand. The affected vehicles include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 from the 2022 through 2024 model years and the Ioniq 6 from the 2023 and 2024 model years. The Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80 from the 2023 and 2024 model years are also affected. Kia is also recalling 48,232 copies of its electric EV6 from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 model years

For all brands, dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse, if needed, along with performing a software update for the ICCU. This will all be done free of charge. Hyundai and Genesis owners are expected to be notified on May 14; Kia owners will receive their notification letter on April 29.

Kia recalling 430,000 Tellurides over Rollaway risk

Kia is recalling 427,407 Telluride SUVs due to an issue with the driveshaft system that may allow parked vehicles to roll away. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall is necessary to fix an improperly assembled intermediate shaft and front right driveshaft that could engage only partially. This, when repeated frequently, can cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines, potentially allowing unintended movement while the vehicle is in park. Kia said there have been 16 reports of this problem, including 10 warranty claims, and in six of the cases, the vehicles have been confirmed by the automaker to have spline damage or wear consistent with the recall issue.

The recall covers a wide spread of Tellurides, including all 2020 through 2023 and select 2024 model Telluride vehicles manufactured from January 9, 2019, through October 19, 2023. Documents filed with NHTSA cite Kia's estimate that only 1 percent of vehicles covered under the recall will turn out to be affected. The NHTSA safety report states that both a grinding noise and loss of power can help identify the issue to owners.

The NHTSA documents state that 2024 Tellurides built starting October 20, 2023, are not included in the recall because they have a driveshaft assembly that the supplier inspected with "an additional computer vision process" to make sure it is fully engaged.

Notification letters will be sent to owners with instructions to bring their vehicle to a Kia dealer. Dealers will inspect the intermediate shaft and replace it if necessary. They will also install an update to the electronic parking brake system to prevent unintended movement while the vehicle is in Park, or any time the vehicle is stopped and the driver's door is opened.

Hyundai Santa Fe Backup Camera recall affects 2024 model year

A 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe backup camera recall affects more than 20,000 vehicles because the rearview camera images may be blocked by trailer parking assist messages.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs will need to be brought to dealerships for updates to the backup camera system software. A blocked rearview camera image violates federal safety standards because a Santa Fe driver will experience reduced rearward visibility.

Hyundai discovered the problem in February during routine 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe backup camera shipping quality confirmation. It didn't take long for engineers to conclude faulty software logic was the cause of the trailer parking assist messages blocking the rearview camera images.

When Hyundai filed recall documents with the government, the automaker knew of two incidents related to the camera images. However, there have been no crashes or injuries caused by the blocked rearview camera images.

Nearly 2,000 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles are recalled in Canada. Hyundai Santa Fe backup camera image recall letters will be mailed around June 1, 2024.

Toyota Prius under recall because Rear doors can fly open

Toyota will recall about 211,000 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles worldwide, including some 55,000 in the United States, over a problem that could cause the rear doors to come open while the vehicle is in motion. According to the automaker, water can get into the electronic rear door latches, potentially causing a short circuit. If the doors aren't locked, they could then come open unexpectedly, either while the vehicle is in motion or in a crash.

While Toyota doesn't have a fix for the issue yet, it says owners should keep the automatic locking feature, which locks doors when the vehicle is moved out of park, turned on at all times until the recall can be scheduled. Customers will receive notifications about the recall in early June, and their vehicles will get both rear door opener switches replaced at no charge.

A recall report is not yet available via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalls website, but Toyota says owners can check the automaker's own recalls site to see if their vehicle is included in the recall.

Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager minivans recalled

A 2024 Chrysler Pacifica and 2024 Chrysler Voyager recall has been announced for more than 26,000 minivans that can lose the traction control systems when the cruise control features are activated.

The problem can allow wheel slip in certain low traction conditions, increasing the risk of a crash without warning.

Chrysler opened a throttle calibration investigation in February into 2024 Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager minivans. FCA decided to recall the minivans after engineers studied the history of software changes and vehicle behaviors.

Chrysler says it is not aware of any customer assistance records, warranty claims, field reports, crashes or injuries relating to the traction control problems.

A Canadian recall involves more than 1,000 minivans, but the recalled models involve 2024 Chrysler Pacificas and 2024 Chrysler Grand Caravans. Chrysler dealers will update the traction control system software after recall letters are mailed May 17, 2024.

2024 Tesla Cybertruck recalled over Accelerator Pedal that can get stuck

Tesla issued a recall for the 2024 Cybertruck following reports of an issue with the vehicle's accelerator pedal becoming trapped, potentially leading to unintended acceleration. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers 3878 vehicles. An estimated 100 percent of the recall population is said to be affected by the issue, and since production of the trucks started last fall, the fact that the recall includes "all 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024," it appears to be all or nearly all of the Cybertrucks built to date.

According to NHTSA documents, when high force is applied to the pad covering the accelerator pedal, the pad can unlatch and may become stuck in the interior trim of the driver's footwell. If the pad becomes stuck, the accelerator pedal will remain depressed and the vehicle will continue accelerating. It is important to note that, in the event the accelerator pedal gets stuck, depressing the brake pedal immediately cuts drive torque to the wheels, including when both pedals are pressed. According to NHTSA, with both pedals pressed, the vehicle will slow down as quickly as it normally would if only the brake were applied.

Tesla was first notified of the issue through a customer complaint on March 31, 2024. On April 2, the automaker confirmed that the vehicle's brake system worked correctly during the incident and that with both pedals pressed, the vehicle was brought to a stop. NHTSA documents state that following internal testing, Tesla issued a voluntary recall of the Cybertruck on April 12. As of April 15, the manufacturer said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

To remedy the issue, Tesla will replace or rework the accelerator pedal assembly and cover to prevent the pad from becoming dislodged in the future. According to documents filed with NHTSA, a change was made to the Cybertruck's production by April 17 to equip a new accelerator pedal.

NHTSA documents also show that vehicles at delivery centers and in transit to customers will receive the fix before being delivered to customers. That information lines up with a recent report from the Wall Street Journal that Tesla temporarily halted deliveries for the Cybertruck. It is unclear exactly how long deliveries have been delayed. Car and Driver reached out to Tesla for comment on both the issue surrounding the recall and the halt in deliveries, but we have not heard back at the time of publishing.

Ford recalls over 456,000 Bronco Sport and Maverick cars due to loss of drive power risk

Ford is recalling more than 456,000 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles due to a battery detection issue that can result in loss of drive power, increasing crash risks.

According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the body and power train control modules for these cars may fail to detect changes in battery charge. And when undetected, a low battery charge can cause an unexpected loss of drive power — including sudden stalling or inability to restart — and the use of other electric capabilities like hazard lights.

The recall covers about 403,000 model year 2021-2024 Bronco Sports produced between February 2020 and March 2024, as well as more than 53,000 model year 2022-2023 Mavericks manufactured from February 2021 to October 2022, a recall report dated Friday notes.

To remedy this issue, dealers will recalibrate the impacted vehicles' body and power train control modules at no cost. Owner notification letters are set to be mailed out on May 13, a Tuesday NHSTA recall acknowledgment letter notes.

The software update is not available yet, a Ford spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press Wednesday, but should arrive by later in the second quarter. In a statement, the spokesperson added that “safety is a top priority, and we are taking proactive measures to address this issue promptly and effectively.”

As of Feb. 8, the NHSTA recall report notes, Ford was not aware of any injuries tied to the issue — but the Dearborn, Michigan-based the company noted 917 related warranty reports, 11 field reports and 54 customer complaints. There were also two property damage claims and three unverified fire reports.

Kia EV6 vehicles recalled via Integrated Charging Control Units (ICCUs)

Kia EV6 vehicles are recalled because the integrated charging control units (ICCUs) may stop charging the 12-volt batteries and lead to stalled vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation in July 2023 after 2022 Kia EV6 owners complained their vehicles lost power while driving.

NHTSA found the ICCU could become damaged over time from short bursts of high voltage. The damaged ICCU can prevent charging of the 12V battery which will then gradually discharge while driving.

In July 2013, Kia issued a service campaign to inspect EV6 integrated charging control units and install over-current detection software in 2022-2023 EV6 vehicles. But now, more than 48,000 model year 2022-2024 Kia EV6 vehicles are under an official recall for Kia dealers to update the ICCU software and possibly replace the ICCU components and fuses.

Kia says the ICCU software reduces the risk of over-current and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV6 battery charging. The recall also includes a software update that revises the electric water pump operational limit to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving.

Federal safety regulators have closed the Kia EV6 ICCU investigation due to the recall of 48,000 vehicles. Kia EV6 ICCU recall letters are expected to be mailed April 29, 2024.
