Re: Scoop: Tata Motors Considering Compact SUV Based on X1 Platform

ICB reports a similar story:

Tata Motors is indeed working on a Mini SUV that will take on the like of the Mahindra Quanto, the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster. Although Tata Motors was the first Indian car maker to come up with a luxury SUV in the form of the Safari, the Mini SUV space is a brand new area for the car maker. That Tata Motors is working on a Mini SUV has been confirmed by the car maker’s new R&D chief, Tim Leverton. While Tata Motors is keeping other details about the Mini SUV under wraps, word has emerged that this SUV will be based on the X1 platform.
Now, the X1 platform that Tata Motors uses underpins cars like the Indigo Manza sedan and the Indica Vista hatchback. This information was made public by AutocarIndia Editor Hormazd Sorabjee, in the scoop section of the Autocar Show’s latest TV edition. This bit of buzz also means that the earlier speculation of Tata Motors building a compact SUV based on the Aria crossover, goes out of the window. With that, expect the new Mini SUV from Tata Motors to feature a monocoque design, that could give it much better road manners than what would have been the case with a body-on-ladder design.

Sad to notice, Tata is trying to keep up with Mahindra (Quanto).

couple of years back Tata used to launch a new segment and Mahindra used to follow.

Re: Scoop: Tata Motors Considering Compact SUV Based on X1 Platform

TATA need to compete with Mahindra in SUV's. Atleast now they are coming up with new ideas.
If they only work around Tata Safari and introducing versions like Storm,Lightning,Thunder,Rain.... then its very hard to compete.

HM (Hindustan Motors) did the same and made Ambassador to drop from first place to Last place.

They need to comeup with a Fantastic Interiors and Exterior designs.

All the Best TATA.

Re: Scoop: Tata Motors Considering Compact SUV Based on X1 Platform

Reuters reports that Tata Motors has started working on a compact SUV based on the Indica Vista’s X1 platform to rival the likes of Mahindra Quanto, Premier Rio and Ford EcoSport. This will be the Indian automaker’s biggest product development program after the ultra low cost Nano. The automaker has summoned huge resources to ramp up the R&D work on the new compact SUV.
We have heard rumors about Tata Motors developing a ‘CS version’ of the Tata Sumo in recent weeks. The idea is to launch a smaller Sumo variant that will be shorter than four meters and thus will enjoy considerable tax benefits.
However, this new development suggest that Tata Motors has also decided to build a new compact SUV from scratch, that will carry a different branding.
There were also talks about Tata Motors developing a mini Aria to rival the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. If those rumors are also true, then we could see three new contenders from Tata Motors in the mini UV segment making it a complete portfolio.
Tata Motors plans to raise 75 billion rupees to get its passenger vehicle business back on track over the next five years. Very little has been allocated to updating old products. A massive part of the investment is going to be dedicated to developing new names.
The investment is very ambitious because Tata Motors sales have been dwindling over the last two years. According to SIAM, Tata’s market share fell to 10.9 percent in the April-November from 12.8 percent in the last fiscal year. The automaker is on an austerity drive to cut losses and reduce the sunk costs of its past.
Tata Motors’ product development head Dr. Tim Leverton, a former research head of BMW, was quoted saying “You’ll see, over the next 12-18 months onwards, a fireworks of output.”

I am ROFL[lol]maybe a billion dollar would be spent to change name from Indica Vista to VISTA.

Most of the offerings from Tata were fresh:Sierra,Safari,Sumo,Indica diesal,Nano,Ace,iris.

But they couldn't accommodate with our requirements competently along with other manufacturer, they have to address this before any thing else.

Sumo was a success.
It became the fastest to reach 1 lac sales numbers in India at that time.

Indica was a success.
Their failure was not updating it in time and as per market requirement.

Ace is the market leader with a huge margin.

Iris is gaining market share.

They are capable and as Manoj mentioned, this news and new faces in key posts are in the right direction.

In mid 90's Tata Motors was the first Indian company to cross Rs 10000 Cr mark in turn over (in pvt sector)

After that, in first half of last decade, experts have written them off and predicted the fall of this company. But a few years later, they are still there with a turn over of Rs 180000 Cr and a proft of Rs 15500 Cr.

So in the end, we will have Vista on X1 platform & so will the CUV.
It will be interesting to see 2013, Quanto Vs Duster Vs Ecosport Vs Tata X1 CUV & maybe Maruti's UV too.

Don't think Vista based compact UV will be out in 2013.I think auto expo 2014 is the time when Tata will demonstrate it to the world and later in the same year at festival season will officially launch it like typical Tata fashion.

Re: Scoop: Tata Motors Considering Compact SUV Based on X1 Platform

Rather than such CUVs or rear kicked UVs as I call them [lol], I would prefer to see nice sedan from Tata competing against Laura, Cruze & Elantra. With Jaguar in hand, they can come up with nice car. Hope Prima sedan is revived.

BTW, why are all running behind compact UVs ? Seems they are new babes of Motown. [;)]

Every one wants to own a big car (bada hey to behtar hey). BUT none are ready to live with the hassles of owning one. Hence the dawn of the wanna be biggies.

We can buy Aria/XUV/Storme/Innova/Scorpio/Sumo Grande/Gold/Xylo/Bolero for similar money if space and comfort are the criterion. BUT when you travel on a longish holiday, you cant have more than 5 persons aboard. So why pay extra in tax for those 2 (useless) seats at the back.

Re: Tata Safari Storme Road Test Review

During the launch event of STORME in kolkata, Mr Dhar gave some good news have a look.

Compact SUVs on Tata menu

Tata Motors is planning to enter the compact SUV segment and will offer them in monocoque designs on the Indica and Manza platforms.

“We are looking at the compact SUV segment and are going to have products in that segment pretty soon,” said Ashesh Dhar, head of utitily vehicles, Tata Motors, who was in the city today to launch the upgraded Tata Safari Storme.

Tata Motors’ sales in the utility vehicle segment last year grew 22 per cent to 55,000 units, on the back of the Safari Dicor, Sumo Gold and Aria. It is now looking at the compact SUV segment to keep its leadership in the utility vehicle market.

“Our Tata Sumo Gold, for example, is doing extremely well and is a segment leader. We have sold 27,000 units of the new Sumo since its launch, up from 20,000 units, posting a growth of 80 per cent,” Dhar said.

Re: Scoop: Tata Motors Considering Compact SUV Based on X1 Platform

Tata readying Compact and Big SUVs:Tata Motors readying small, big UVs... - Money - DNA

“I can’t disclose anything for future, but you can be sure that we are working on all sorts of UVs in all segments and compact SUV (sports utility vehicle) is playing a vital role,” a top company official told DNA Money.

“We have been working on a new range of products for at least a year, since I have joined here. We are intensifying the process,” said Karl-Heinz Servos, project director – joint projects, engineering research centre, Tata Motors.
“We are looking to have a car or product where people can get into from two wheels (two-wheeler or a small car) right into a UV. When you have a two-wheeler or a small car, you aspire for better. What we have to work on are affordable UVs. Whether they will be small is a question, but more small is more affordable,” said Servos.
Tata Motors is also considering a compact SUV, which most automakers are looking at today. M&M’s compact Quanto has already received 5,000 bookings in three weeks, while other manufacturers like Ford India and Maruti Suzuki are also planning to introduce sub-4 metre SUVs in the next few years.
“India needs compact cars. Compact cars give you better fuel economy; give you less space but are more affordable. So we will have to move into this segment,” said Servos.

The company is looking to catch up with competition quickly. “Competition will intensify. Time to market is important and we as a company understand that. We need to think of the idea and work on it because you need to be in the market when the trend starts,” said Servos.
