Re: Tata Kestrel Q501 SUV (1.5 MJD) To Rival Renault Duster

Land Rover Discovery Sport-based Tata Q501/Q502 launching in 2018 – Report

The Fiat 2L MultiJet diesel engine will be used.

Reports are rife that Tata Motors is working on a flagship product, using for the first time a Land Rover platform. The SUV in question is codenamed Tata Q501/Q502, and according to a new report on Autocar India, will launch in 2018.

The Tata Q501/Q502 will share its floor pan and structural components with the Land Rover Discovery Sport, which is assembled in India at the car maker’s Pune plant. However, the Tata offering will have its own design and identity, the report states.

It will be powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel engine paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Naturally, 2WD and 4WD variants will be offered. The 170 bhp engine is also expected to power the Jeep C-Segment SUV (codename Jeep 551), which will be made in India next year. Hence, the two companies could explore the possibility of locally assembling this engine and benefit from volumes of scale.

I don't understand one thing. Why plonk the foreign FIAT engine when Tata themselves have their own 2.2L VariCOR which is fit to produce 460NM torque?
If they feel that engine is not enough, then they could have got the LandRover's 2.0L unit.
Why borrow again from FIAT when they are just starting to stand on their own feet?

I don't know how many know this but the Manza was(and it still is made there albeit in very small numbers for export)produced at ranjangaon since Fiat operations at ranjangaon are owned 50% percent by TATA's they are going ahead sharing the 2litre engine which will be used in C SUV by Fiat. That will be built with mostly export market in mind and for that project costing 1750cr both Fiat and Tata have contributed equally. With upcoming stricter emission norms that engine is already euro 6 compliant and has superb power of 170bhp. So Tata have a good choice for premium SUV where they will be competing in the 20laks plus segment. There will not be any royalty payments to Fiat unlike Maruti.

TATA want to enter into premium SUV segment with best in class fuel efficient engines thats the reason they decided to use FIAT Multijet engines because every aware about FIAT Diesel engines they are efficient and powerfull.

well tata are on thier feet this will be co developed engine. But it would be wise of tata saying that it would be fiat engine then indians would go for premium car. Else they may shun indian premium car.

So let tata advertise some thing which is foreign for desi junta.

If the Q501/502 project is planned for launch in 2018, then some concept drawing atleast should be out in 2016 atleast. Last I checked, they were finalizing suppliers for the project around 6 months ago.

PS : For the first time in a locally designed vehicle, they are going to use a hollow welded tube type front driveshaft.

Can you throw more light on this? will the driveshaft being hollow not be succeptable for faster tear down?
There are several advantages of using a hollow welded tube type front driveshaft. The mass is lower, saving weight as well as having lower moment of inertia resulting in lower drivetrain losses. Overall, leads to reduced fuel consumption. Also balancing is better.

Will it be a proper off roader like land rover? Q502 is supposed to be a 7 seater so can we assume discovery sport proportions for this? If with a a 170bhp engine and same platform as discovery sport it will drive and handle similarly but half the price. The export potential would be immense for this and help build the brand.

It will not be a proper off reader in the classical sense of being equipped with a low ratio transfer case. But it will have offroading capabilities as good as they get (except for the extreme).

Now to answer why TATA is not using its own engine. The whole power train, including the AWD system is going to be common between the Q501/502 and the Jeep Renegade that will be launched here. The cost economics of such commonality simply beats the viability of re-engineering the Varicor unit into a transverse layout, developing a new FWD gearbox and independently validating a new AWD system, for what would essentially be a relatively low volume product.

That said, the tuning of the engine and the whole driveline would be different though, you suit the different chassis. Like the Hexa we could expect a terrain response system, maybe a more advanced one.

I am desperate to know this will the Hexa auto come in 4wd? Can we expect pricing similar to the Aria or will it be more?

Tata Q501 SUV spied testing yet again

As Tata Motors continues testing the Tata Q501 in India, another batch of spy shots has surfaced online, courtesy Team-BHP. As before, the test mules were disguised as a Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Tata Q501 is underpinned by the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s platform. Not just the platform, this model will share some suspension components and many of the structural elements too with the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Land Rover offering is available in 5- and 7-seat seating layouts, and similarly, Tata Motors will offer its model based on it in 5- and 7-seat versions.

Tata Motors is rigorously testing the Tata Q501 in the Land Rover Discovery Sport body. According to the car spotter, one of the test mules, both of which had disc brakes on all four wheels, had around 1,77,000 km reading on the odometer. It had a MID similar to of the Tata Nexon. The Tata Q501 will likely the locally produced 2.0-litre diesel engine powers the Jeep Compass currently. Tata Motors will source 70,000 units of this engine from FCA India.

The Tata Q501 will arrive towards the end of 2018, likely with a starting price falling in the INR 15-20 lakh (ex-showroom) bracket. It will compete with the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V VW Tiguan.

If this is a Tata product in disguise then its simply Amazing.
Superb looks and dimensions. But such an amazing product can hurt the sales of Hexa, IMHO.

Re: Tata Kestrel Q501 / Q502 SUV (1.5 MJD) Spotted Testing

So these would be the 2nd and the 3rd FWD SUVs from Tata Motors , first was obviously in the form of Nexon !

Only thing I would miss in this vehicle would be the 6speed AT from Hexa :( , wonder what would be the ATs and the gas engines to be used in these hulks ! Will be shared again with the Jeep ?
