Surprise Surprise, ISUZU launches MU-7 & D-MAX pick ups

Isuzu has discretely launched the two vehicles that were caught on test many times around the Pune area in the last few months – MU-7 and D-Max – in India.

A small dealership has been inaugurated in Hyderabad where the first set of products will be sold on a test basis.

The MU-7 is a pickup-based SUV, whereas the D-Max pickup (which underpins the MU-7) comes in two avatars – single cab and crew cab. These products are launched in India through the CBU route using the Thailand manufacturing plant (plans to sanction a manufacturing facility in India in the next few years are reportedly under discussion) and are to test the waters in the competitive Indian utility vehicle market, that is mostly constituted by products wearing either the Mahindra or the Tata badge.

The MU-7 has been priced at 23.75 lakh rupees, while the single cab and crew cab editions of the D-Max are priced at 6.87 lakh rupees and 8.09 lakh rupees (all prices are ex-showroom Hyderabad).

The Hindu Business Line reports that Isuzu’s second dealership will be inaugurated in Coimbatore shortly.

Even if it is only on a trial basis, we think Isuzu must hold a national press conference to announce its foray into India, conduct a press drive, and showcase these vehicles with its designers or engineers demonstrating some of the features, and the marketing team explaining the brand positioning in what is an ocean of automotive market. India is a very busy marketplace for automobiles, and a new launch, say even from a reputed brand, is forgotten in a matter of days.

At 24 lakhs no one would bother to buy this SUV,IMO.Why didn't they first localise it and then launch? CKD operations should have given them massive price advantage,IMO.Also why such soft launch? Are they really serious about India?

Isuzu MU-7, D-Max bookings begin

Isuzu’s big MU-7 SUV is a natural competitor to the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in markets like Thailand, and the carmaker is looking to replicate this in India as well. Isuzu dealerships in Delhi and Hyderabad are currently in the process of being set-up. However, Isuzu is now taking bookings for this burly SUV and its versatile pick-up sibling. The MU-7 is priced at Rs 24.16 lakh (ex-showroom, Hyderabad), while the D-Max is priced at Rs 6.87 lakh for the single cab version and Rs 8.09 lakh for the double cab version.

The MU-7 is a huge SUV, as you can tell from its appearance, there’s nothing subtle or half-hearted about its styling. The nose has a prominent ‘V’ shape to it, and the blocky headlights and grille give it the appearance of a battering ram. The Isuzu badge sits inside a simple chrome grille and there’s a large, and no doubt functional, intake on the bonnet as well. The styling of the MU-7 has recently been upgraded, with the biggest change having taken place in the fog-light region, where the bumper now protrudes outward and the fog lights are sunken in. Isuzu, in an effort to add some flash, has also added an underlining of chrome. Prominent wheel arches, a foot plate and roof rails add to its otherwise non-descript styling.

Doesn't this SUV share its body with the Force ONE? Who will pay 10 lakhs extra over Force one I may ask and for what? Even Force 1 has got 140 bhp MB sourced engine!

+1, even the pricing is confusing, pick up range at 6-8 lacs whereas the SUV for around 23 lacs! can anybody justify why this drastic variation between the two?. A 15-18 lacs could have been fine, but who will pay 23 lacs for a brand which got no service facilities all around when u can get more reputed mercs, BMWs or Audi's by paying 4-5 lacs more.

Re: Isuzu MU7 SUV Caught on Test in India EDIT: Now Gets Launched

The excise tax for CBU import of Commercial vehicles is only 10%,while for the private vehicles it's whopping 100%.Hence the disparity in pricing.BTW,I really like the pricing of the pick-ups.At eight and half lakhs, you get a'bags+ ABS,what more can one ask for?

Japan's Isuzu to finalise Indian manufacturing unit plans soon

Japanese auto maker Isuzu today said it will soon finalise plans to set up a manufacturing plant in India as it gears up to enter the country with light commercial vehicles and sports utility vehicles.

The company is focusing on South India for the plant, which could have a minimum capacity of one lakh units per annum. It is launching sports utility vehicle SUV MU7, priced at Rs 23.75 lakh and two pick-up trucks from the D-Max range priced at Rs 6.87 lakh and Rs 8.09 lakh.

"We are in final stages of evaluation and will soon take a decision on setting up of a plant in India. We are looking to set up a factory in South India," Isuzu Motors India Pvt Ltd Deputy Managing Director Shigeru Wakabayashi told PTI.

While he declined to share details, Wakabayashi said the plant will have a minimum annual capacity of one lakh units.

"It will take about three to five years for the plant to come up and the investment is yet to be finalised," he said.

Till the time the company is ready with its plant, it will import products from Thailand, where it has a larger presence in the pick-up segment, he said.

"We will be launching our SUV MU7 and two pick-up trucks from the D-Max range in the South Indian market first. We are using the opportunity to study customer response and preference for our products," Wakabayashi said.

The company is opening dealerships in Hyderabad first, followed by another at Coimbatore.

In due course of time, he said the company will explore introducing products that are suited for the Indian market.

"Our understanding is that over 50 per cent of the Indian population are related to agricultural activities. They would prefer to buy vehicles which helps in creating assets. In the rural areas, tier II and III cities, there is a lot of potential for pick-ups and we will target those customers," he said.

He also said while the initial focus will be to address the demand of the Indian market, in future the company will also look at exporting from the country to serve neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.
