Stellantis will be the new name of the fourth biggest car company in the world, after conglomerates FCA and PSA merge to form one giant car manufacturing group.

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is the umbrella group name for Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati. Peugeot Group (PSA) is the owner of Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel, and Vauxhall.

The US$50 billion (AU$71.5B) merger of the two groups will create the fourth largest car company in the world.

The new name Stellantis will only be used at a management level, referring to the umbrella corporation of the many car brands brought together in the FCA/PSA merger.

In a joint media release, it's said the new corporate name was developed from the Latin verb 'stello' which means 'to brighten with stars'.

Press Release:
Stellantis inaugurated today a new software center in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The new center will focus on the development of software and technological innovations crucial to the advancement of automobiles and mobility. In line with Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares' vision of marking a new era for Stellantis in India and the long-term Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, the new site is the Company's second global innovation center in the country.

The facility, spread across 50,000 square feet, will serve as the primary development center for STLA SmartCockpit – one of the three technology platforms that are key to the Company’s digital transformation strategy due to arrive in 2024 and deployed across the four STLA vehicle platforms. In addition, the Bengaluru center will play a crucial role in the development of AI and ADAS technologies for STLA AutoDrive. Additionally, the Base Software Development team in Bengaluru will support Base software platforms made with the Classic and Adaptive Autosar frameworks.

The new center was launched by Yves Bonnefont, Chief Software Officer at Stellantis, together with the Stellantis India top management team. The Bengaluru office will house state-of-the-art labs, including a next-generation acoustic lab, which is tasked with the development of specific audio signatures as well as premium audio experiences for Stellantis vehicle owners worldwide. The establishment of the new digital hub as a key contributor of change for a sustainable tomorrow is a robust demonstration of Stellantis’ unabated dedication to facilitating the global mobility sector’s digital transformation.

“Stellantis is proud to contribute to the age of software-defined vehicles,” said Yves Bonnefont, Stellantis Chief Software Officer. “As a global organization, we are committed to fostering talent across geographies. The Indian tech talent and its innovative startup ecosystem are important to accelerating Stellantis’ transformation to a sustainable mobility tech company. India plays a key role in Stellantis’ digital approach and development.”

Stellantis has accelerated the hiring process for the new center that will eventually employ some 500 people. In addition to leveraging multi-pronged hiring strategies, the Company is investing in the upskilling and reskilling of local talent to help empower them to take on global assignments.

The new innovation and development center in Bengaluru will further help nurture Indian expertise in the software and technology sector and give us the opportunity to wield such proficiency in global markets. The company is also collaborating with Indian universities to explore the development of industry-specific curricula and support ongoing expansion.

Stellantis’ software-driven strategy deploys next-generation tech platforms, building on existing connected vehicle capabilities to transform how customers interact with their vehicles and to generate €20 billion in incremental annual revenues by 2030.

In addition to the Software Hub, Stellantis in India is also represented by two iconic automotive brands – Jeep and Citroën offering a wide range of cars for domestic as well as export markets.

Faurecia, Michelin and Stellantis have announced the signing of a binding agreement for Stellantis to acquire 33.3% stake in Symbio, a leader in zero-emission hydrogen mobility.

Faurecia and Michelin will remain shareholders with 33.3% holding each. The addition of Stellantis as a shareholder will boost Symbio’s development across Europe and in the U.S.

Press Release Excerpt:
“Acquiring an equal stake in Symbio will bolster our leadership position in hydrogen-powered vehicles by supporting our fuel cell van production in France, and it also serves as a perfect complement to our growing battery electric vehicle portfolio,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO. “As we push our Dare Forward 2030 plan forward and move to become carbon net zero by 2038, we are considering every technological tool at our fingertips to fight global warming. Hydrogen fuel cells are necessary, and Symbio will become a significant player in the battle to protect future generations.”

Symbio plans to produce 50,000 fuel cells per year by 2025, leveraging its Saint-Fons state-of-the-art gigafactory, which will start production in the second half of 2023. In 2022, Symbio announced the implementation of its HyMotive project aimed at accelerating its industrialization and the development of disruptive innovations, a project that will enable the company to reach a total annual production capacity in France of 100,000 systems by 2028 with the creation of 1,000 jobs in France.

“We are delighted with this transaction which further increases Symbio’s capabilities and will give additional momentum to the joint venture. Symbio is now perfectly equipped to scale up and expand its leadership outside Europe, at a time when the automotive industry is accelerating towards zero emissions,” said Patrick Koller, Chief Executive Officer of Faurecia. “This agreement benefits all parties and allows FORVIA to confirm its status as a global leader in clean mobility.”

“The entry of Stellantis into the capital of Symbio is a tremendous development driver for our joint subsidiary,” said Florent Menegaux, CEO of Michelin. “It is also a perfect demonstration that fuel cell technology is essential for the automotive industry to succeed in the electrification of mobility, particularly for professional use. Stellantis is already a partner of choice and will be a key player with us in the future. Finally, this transaction reinforces the conviction that Michelin has held for many years: hydrogen will be one of the unavoidable solutions for decarbonization.”

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals. Closing is expected in the third quarter of 2023.

Stellantis reveals new STLA large EV platform

20240122053146_Stellantis_STLA_Large_Platform.jpg

Stellantis has revealed a new electric car platform that will accommodate batteries big enough for 800km of range and "extreme" powertrains with more grunt than a Hellcat V8.

The new STLA Large platform is related to the STLA Medium platform, which is designed for EVs measuring between 4.7 and 4.9 metres long and recently made its production debut under the new Peugeot e-3008 SUV overseas. It's likewise "BEV-native", but it can also accommodate hybrid powertrains and is compatible with front-, rear- and four-wheel-drive powertrains.

STLA large platform to be used by many Stellantis brands
This new platform is designed for the largest cars in the Stellantis portfolio (measuring between 4.76m and 5.13m long), which the company said will take the form of crossovers, SUVs and lower-slung cars in the D and E segments.

20240122051337_Jeep_Wagoneer_S.jpg

The prevailing focus is on the US market, but Stellantis has confirmed that some European factories, including the Alfa Romeo one in Cassino, Italy, will be adapted to build STLA Large EVs for local sale. It will first be used for a pair of models from Dodge and Jeep, understood to be the Charger muscle car and Wagoneer S SUV among other full-sized EVs. Jeep's Wagoneer S, which is scheduled to launch in the US in the second half of 2024, will boast of the brand's 4xe off-road tech, have about 600hp, and is said to have a claimed 0-100kph time of 3.5 seconds.

Alfa Romeo will then use STLA Large for a range-topping luxury SUV in the vein of the BMW iX and an electric Giulia sedan replacement, while Maserati is set to launch a closely related EV replacement for the Levante SUV at around the same time.

The platform will underpin eight production cars – including at least one from Chrysler, which currently sells only the Pacifica MPV – by the end of 2026, Stellantis said.

Individual brands will make statements about their plans for STLA Large from later this year. The relevant EVs from Dodge and Jeep are due on sale within a matter of months.

As an indication of its performance potential, Stellantis said the quickest STLA Large cars will crack 0-100kph in around 2.0sec, with "extreme power that will outperform any of the existing Hellcat V8s". The recently retired Dodge Charger Hellcat, for reference, packed 717hp and 881Nm of torque and so could crack the same sprint in around 3.7sec.

All EVs based on this platform will be powered by e-axles – compact units that comprise the motors, inverters and gearbox. They will be fitted with a conventional 400V electrical architecture as standard but can optionally be upgraded to an 800V system, which will allow charging at rates of up to 270kW. The largest battery available will be a 118kWh unit giving a maximum range of 800km in the most aerodynamically efficient variants, but Stellantis said it has engineered the platform to support different battery chemistries and drivetrain technologies, suggesting this figure could rise in the future.

STLA platform and the India connection
At the moment, there is no announcement from Stellantis on bringing any STLA platform based model to India. However, we do expect some of the future offerings from the brand that will be based on this platform to be sold in our market.
