SsangYong is a South Korean manufacturer of off-road vehicles that is best known in Asia and Europe. It is currently not in its best financial shape, though there’s a new product that could bring fresh new customers to the brand in hope of a brighter future. The Torres is an all-new SUV that is positioned slightly above the Korando, SsangYong’s most recognizable product around the globe.

The automaker shares a few images with the new model and they reveal a rugged-looking SUV with a bold front fascia featuring six vertical slats between the headlights. There’s a massive bumper underneath with what seems to be fog lamps integrated into individual housings. The side profile sends strong Jeep vibes with its large and angular wheel arches. At the back, the Torres looks like a facelifted and slightly larger Korando.

There are zero similarities between the two SUVs when it comes to the interior, however. The Torres has a modern cabin with three screens on the dashboard – one for the fully digital instrument cluster, one for the infotainment system, and one controlling the HVAC system. The overall design language in the interior is angular, again, with lots of aluminum inserts and leather-rich panels. It's worth noting that the photos depict the range-topping T7 trim level.

What SsangYong is not ready to reveal is the mechanical specifications of the Torres, though the South Korean outlet Autopost obtained government certification documents providing more information. As far as we understand it, at least initially, the Torres uses the Korando’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo gas powertrain with a peak output of 168 horsepower (125 kilowatts) and 206 pound-feet (280 Newton-meters) of torque. A six-speed automatic gearbox sends the power to the front wheels or, optionally, to both axles.

The Torres is slightly larger than the Korando and offers 703 liters of cargo space, which can expand to 839 liters if you remove the luggage board. Up to 1,662 liters are available if you fold down the second row of seats. On its home market, even the base Torres comes nicely equipped with artificial leather, heated front seats, LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, and others.

New SsangYong Torres was announced on social media

Here’s the first full look at the new Torres SUV from the Korean manufacturer SsangYong and it is set to launch in fully electric form in the UK next year. In SsangYong’s SUV the lineup it’s in the middle Korando and Rexton in terms of size, so we expect prices to start around £30,000.

Torres takes its name from the Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. This new front-facing shot shows it in a rugged look SUV that’s a huge visual difference from anything in the current SsangYong lineup.

At the front we see the vertical grille slats, what looks like a red cap for the drag eye and the silver lower part of the bumper formed into a slide. There’s chunky wheel arch trim on the side, side steps, and an existing high-mounted storage box. Land Rover DefenderOptional side-mounted ‘gear box’.

Inside, we see a cabin that looks much more modern and upscale than what we’ve been used to from the SsangYong, with a larger central touchscreen that separates from the dashboard. There’s also a smaller screen below it, divided by several air vents. A third screen is located on the center console and the driver also has their own display. On the steering wheel we see the Korean version of the SsangYong badge.

SsangYong will begin production of the “tough and rugged” Torres firstly for the South Korean market. Auto Express understands the European version will be an electric-only Torres and it won’t arrive until 2023. Once here, the EV derivative will take on the likes of the Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.4 but with a lower price tag.

No technical specifications for the car have been announced, although the confirmation of both electric and combustion powertrains in other markets suggests it could use an adapted combustion-engined platform, much like the new Korando e-Motion. The manufacturer has also previously said that it is developing an all-electric pick-up truck, which could end up being a derivative of the Torres.
