Re: ARAI Claimed Mileage Figures of Indian Cars
Thanks Thenali, this has evoked interest in me as well. I wonder whose those OEMs are

ARAI’s 1,500-cc engine to be ready for sale in October
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) will finally make its 1500 cc engine, which is under development, ready for sale to automotive companies by October this year. It had been on the anvil for the past three years.
The first stage of the project will see development of an engine capable of producing 50 KW per litre power and its deployment in vehicles will help people reduce emission and fuel consumption.
A team of 15 engineers are working on the project, which will be completed by the third quarter of this calendar year. It will be offered to companies the following month. N V Marathe, Head of Powertrain Engineering department of ARAI who is leading the research on the project said that in the first stage, the engine will produce a power density of 50 KW per litre.
He added that in subsequent stages, the engine will be developed with a higher power output that can reach upto 75 KW per litre. The 3-cyllinder engine will be used in small cars and light commercial vehicles, but its variants of two and four cyllinders would be developed in later stages that could also be deployed in larger cars.
“The engine prototype is ready and performance and combustion tests on the dynamometer have commenced. The experimental optimization through engineering approach will be carried out to achieve the first of the performance targets of 50 KW per litre and Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission levels. The emission development on the prototype would be complete towards the end of third quarter of this calendar year and the design will be offered to automotive companies by October,’ said Marathe.
Senior deputy director of ARAI, D J Kulkarni, said the decision on commercial exploitation of the product will be taken only after its completion. “We can license the design of the product but the final decision will be taken only after the project is completed,” he said.
ARAI has worked on the downsized model of engine development ensuring that there was no impact on power output and generation of required torque for smooth driving.
The technological challenge is to meet the desired power and torque requirements from the downsized engine as aggressive downsizing increases load on the engine. The basic concept of downsizing is to make the engine displacement smaller for the required power output. Smaller cylinder displacement also means thermal loss which is a big technological challenge,” said Marathe.
