The first fully road legal prototype of Porsche’s upcoming 202mph petrol-electric hybrid powered 918 Spyder has been spied undergoing shakedown tests near Porsche’s Weissach R&D test facility. Sporting a look highly reminiscent of the concept first displayed at the 2010 Geneva motor show, the new two seater is set to crown the Porsche line-up when it is launched next year at a price already confirmed at £621,600 at current exchange rates.

But while it appears similar to the concept, close inspection reveals a number of changes have taken place in the production process. Among them is a smoother looking front end with smaller air ducts out on the front corners and a bonnet that does without the air vent of show car.
The windscreen also sits at a more upright angle and the cabin has been extended slightly in length – as evidenced by the prototype’s longer doors.
At the rear, there are more prominent hunches over the rear wheels and a longer rear overhang – presumably a requirement to see the new car house its advanced petrol-electric driveline, which is concentrated wholly within the lower half in a move Porsche says is aimed at providing the lowest possible centre of gravity.

While appearing like a coupe, the 918 Spyder will, as its name suggest, be an open top. The carbon fibre roof panel, divided in two parts, detaches.
Also clearly visible on the prototype pictured here is the 918 Spyder’s so-called top pipes – exhausts that exit out of the top of the engine bay just behind the monocoque’s integral carbonfibre roll over hoops. The towing rear wing worn by the car shown has been created to replicate the downforce provided by the production car’s more complex multi-stage retractable device.

Power comes from a 4.6-litre V8 mated to a pair of electric motors: one mounted on the front axle to drive the front wheels and another in the gearbox housing to drive the rear wheels. Total power is 762bhp, with Porsche claiming 0-62mph performance of just 2.8sec. Despite the performance, combined economy is a claimed 94.2mpg, and CO2 emissions just 70g/km. Production will be limited to 918 cars with the first example set to be revealed on 18 September - 9/18 as it is known in some parts of the world. Assembly will take place on a dedicated line at Porsche’s traditional Zuffenhausen headquarters in Stuttgart.

2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Enters the Next Phase of Development

"What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance," said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.

Hatz certainly seems to be on to something as Porsche's latest photos of the 918 Spyder further enhance our sense of excitement for the German company's latest halo car. Spotted in its country of origin testing, the 918 Spyder is the spiritual successor to the Carrera GT and features, like its predecessor, a removable top.

Porsche's latest supercar is a plug-in hybrid and utilizes a 570hp 4.6-liter V8 coupled with two electric motors, one complementing the rear and rated at 120hp and one for the front rated at 110hp for a grand total output of around 800hp

The 918 Spyder prototypes seen here in the photos are sporting camouflage reminiscent of the Porsche 917 racing cars, which is supposed to signal the near completion of the latest Porsche model. They make use of a new full carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting "top pipes" exhaust system.

Porsche plans on beginning production of the 2014 918 Spyder in September of 2013 with 918 units planned. It could carry a price tag of around $850,000 and should begin deliveries in either late 2013 or early 2014.

It seems that Porsche realized spy shots were being taken while they were out testing. Their answer was to simply release their own images.

Porsche 918 Spyder revealed at Goodwood

Porsche has taken the wraps off the 918 Spyder during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a supercar with a whopping price of 645,000 euros, without VAT.

According to the German based automaker, the Porsche 918 Spyder will be available only in left-hand drive and despite its appealing design which is breaking the classic pattern of the company, the supercar has an impressive price which has been set at 645,000 without VAT on the Old Continent. Porsche says that the hybrid supercar is coming with a high-revving 4.6 liter V8 engine, assisted by two electric motors, one of them on the front axle and the other on the rear axle, which are providing a combined output of 759 horsepower.

The Porsche 918 Spyder, with its variable all-wheel drive, is returning an impressive 94 mpg UK and it’s emitting just 70 g/km of CO2. The 0 to 62 mph acceleration in the new German supercar is over in only 3.2 seconds and the model can go up to a top speed of 199 mph. The Porsche 918 Spyder can run on electric power alone too but only at a maximum speed of 94 mph. The 918 Spyder has been scheduled to go on sale in November, next year.

Porsche recalls 918 Spyder

In a new development, Porsche recalls some 46 examples of the 918 Spyder in the United States- looks like the recall bug is tormenting even the exclusive of cars. The low production, hybrid hyper-car was recalled over faulty “rear axle components.” Porsche clarified exactly what that meant in this official statement to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the governing body who issued the recall-

Internal tests have shown that the rear-axle longitudinal and transverse control arms from a certain production batch do not meet the required specifications and may have been installed on some vehicles.

This can result in a change in the material properties and reduced durability. In severe service or after an extended period of time, it is possible that the connecting links of a control arm could break, making it more difficult to control the vehicle.
