Peugeot 208 hatchback spied in India

PSA Group has confirmed the brand’s entry in the Indian car market by 2020.

An Overdrive reader has spotted the new Peugeot 208 with red TR-C plates in Mumbai. If you’ve been following recent developments involving Peugeot and the Indian market, you’ll know that its spotting may not be a coincidence.

The PSA Group (owner of Peugeot) has confirmed the brand’s entry in the Indian car market by 2020, and have tied up with CK Birla Group for production in Tamil Nadu with the factory capacity at 100,000 units per annum. However, it’s unlikely that the 208 spotted is the India-spec model on test, given that PSA Group hasn’t yet established complete operations or have decided the product lineup for the Indian market.

The company plans to start selling products by the end of the decade, so it seems a bit too early to start testing prototypes. Also, the current gen 208 is nearing the end of its product cycle, making way for the next-generation model which is based on the CMP platform and due next year.

It’s likely that the model could’ve been imported for data collection and validation, given that the driving conditions, fuel quality and road dust in India are different to markets where Peugeot has a strong presence. Or it could be a benchmark vehicle sourced by another manufacturer or OEM supplier to test components. There have been instances in the past where models not sold in India have been spied testing as benchmark vehicles.

It could also be a car in transit to a neighbour. Peugeot does have a presence in Nepal and Bangladesh, so there’s a possibility that it was being driven to one of the neighbouring markets.

Peugeot 208 hatchback spotted in India

The French automaker is testing the Peugeot 208 without camouflage in India, indicating that the testing is not related to the market launch of the car. Introduced in 2011, the current Peugeot 208 received a facelift in 2015 and is now towards the end of its life. PSA is working on the second generation 208 and the progress made, gauging by spy photos, puts its launch in late 2018.

As reported in February, the PSA Group plans to launch a B-segment hatchback, a compact sedan and a compact SUV in India. It is said that these are made-for-India models. If PSA intends to bring down its European range the second-gen Peugeot 208 due next year could be the hatchback, the sedan, the second-gen Peugeot 301 and the SUV, the second-gen Peugeot 2008.

The PSA Group has formed a joint venture with the CK Birla Group for manufacturing and selling vehicles and components in India. Production will take place in Tamil Nadu with an initial annual capacity of about 1,00,000 vehicles.

Peugeot 208 spotted in India

Peugeot 208 spotted in India again – benchmarking with Elite i20

Peugeot-208-spy.jpg

The newly launched Peugeot 208 had landed in India a couple of years back, when we were the first to bring this news you. The company has commenced testing of its new hatchback. Peugeot had plans to enter India a few years ago when they had tested the 208 and the 508 sedan as well. The company had pulled out of the country, as Europe’s economy was affected back then. This time PSA group (Peugeot) has partnered with CK Birla group and will manufacture cars in their Chennai facility. Let’s have a look at the Peugeot 208 hatchback, which is expected to be PSA’s introductory model in India.

This time the Peugeot 208 has been spotted with 2 Hyundai Elite i20s on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by our YouTube subscriber Nikhil Dawande. How did we know that the 2 Elite i20 are being used for benchmarking? The number of the Elite i20s are similar and seem to have been registered in somewhat similar time. The same goes with the registration number of Peugeot test cars as well. We reckon one will be the petrol one and second diesel. Hyundai Elite i20 is a direct competition to the Peugeot 208 and there is no hiding.

This same hatchback has been spotted on several occasions on test in Tamil Nadu. The PSA Group is looking at setting up its plant in Tamil Nadu itself. Initially, there were rumours that Peugeot could be looking at Gujarat and that was the initial plan as the Peugeot test mules came to India through the Navi Mumbai port itself. At the moment, the company seems to be evaluating, which should be the ideal products for the Indian car market. The company is coming in JV with Hindustan Motors, a brand that is one of the oldest car brands in India. The only unfortunate bit of HM is its history, which doesn’t say much about its strong points apart from the Ambassador, which was sold for many years without any major changes.

The Peugeot 208 is expected to be priced between INR 7 lakhs to INR 10 Lakhs, on-road. This premium hatchback will want to establish itself as a worthy competitor to the Hyundai i20 and Maruti Baleno. Peugeot will need to be careful about the pricing, in order to attract new buyers. It might be a bit early to state if this is a good price, but the company is looking at having a highly localised product. This will help them to reduce the initial cost and even the servicing shall be affordable too.

shx?n=http%3a%2f%2fcdni.autocarindia.com%2fExtraImages%2f20190315062538_Citroen-C5-Aircross-2018.jpg

Since the beginning of 2019, Citroen has been in the news in India. It started with the sighting of the C5 Aircross, and at the end of last month, Groupe PSA confirmed it had indeed chosen Citroen as the brand that would lead its India re-entry. Now, Groupe PSA has announced Citroen will be hosting its first-ever press conference in India on April 3, 2019, and more importantly, will reveal the first Citroen model for India.

The Citroen SUV range: A close look

.ashx?n=http%3a%2f%2fcdni.autocarindia.com%2fExtraImages%2f20190319121211_Citroen-SUVs-collage-1.jpg

With the manufacturing backbone in place, the French conglomerate announced last month that it has chosen the Citroën brand to crack the Indian market this time around. And finally, Groupe PSA has now revealed that it will put in the last piece to the puzzle on April 3, 2019 and divulge the car that will go on sale in our market before end 2021.

While most of this is widely known, the range of products that Citroën has in its stable isn't. In brief, the range comprises hatchbacks, MPVs, sedans and SUVs. There's no confirmation about the models for India but, in our opinion, an SUV would be a clever start. Here's an overview of Citroën's global SUV range.

Citroen C4 Cactus

India’s First Peugeot Citroen showroom in Ahmedabad – C5 Aircross launch by July 2020

citroen-dealer-india-first-ahmedabad-2.jpg

Citroen is all set to set foot in India with the launch of C5 Aircross premium crossover later this year. The French automotive brand, part of PSA Group, has a comprehensive long term plan for our market including products that are specifically developed to suit the local tastes.

Ahead of its official launch later this year Citroen has started opening its outlets in the country to generate brand awareness and get people acquainted with its heritage and premium appeal. One of the first outlets have come up at Ahmadabad. Thanks to automotive enthusiast Ishit Purani, here are the first images of the new showroom. We expect to see more such outlets crop up across the country in the coming weeks.

citroen-dealer-india-first-ahmedabad-3.jpg

Unlike MG Motors which relies on massive and opulent outlets to propagate a premium feel, Citroen believes in keeping things small and simple. The brand has been experimenting with compact showrooms in France under the La Maison (French for home) banner. The Citroen La Maison outlets are smaller than a standard premium car outlet and are appointed with earthly tones including extensive use of wooden trims.

· The group remains committed to India and is working closely with all stakeholders to implement business continuity plans

Chennai, 7 April 2020

Groupe PSA in India, today, announced measures it has taken to tackle and contain the spread of the Covid-19 across all its offices and plants to ensure safety and well-being of all employees. All the offices (Chennai) and plants (Thiruvallur and Hosur) in Tamil Nadu, are closed until further notice and in line with Government’s lockdown directive.

The re-timing is aimed to move the commercial launch to a potentially more positive economic activity period where consumer sentiments are upbeat.

At the same time, Groupe PSA has decided to maintain the project timeline & investment for the C-Cubed program, under which the first vehicle designed, developed and made in India would be launched in 2021 as announced in 2019 by Carlos Tavares, Chairman of the Managing Board, Groupe PSA. Groupe PSA in India has reinforced to all employees and stakeholders the need to stay agile for business continuity post lifting of the government mandated lockdown.
