Dear folks,

there is a lot discussion on which hatchback to buy and the question -answer round go on and on and on.

so thought to start a new discussion on Best hatch in India.

basic points of discussion:

1> build quality
2> engine :petrol/diesel (but more point when the manufac. has its own engine tech used)
3> long term maintain cost
4> mileage
5> drive / ride quality
6> comfort
7>boot space
8>ASS
9> spare part cost
10> looks

Lets start a healthy positive discussion. No personal bonding to any brand plz..

I have attached some comparison.

Hope these will hale many others!

I dislike hatches (including beetle, mini etc) and feel hatches are best for ladies to drive around in city. My take is -

Honda Jazz in petrol,
Hyundai i20 in diesel.
VW Polo is also good but didn't like its diesel as much as i20.

Basis bhai, nice thead but I'm not sure whether it belong to Indian Auto news section. Anyway, let Mod take it own course :).

On the basis of 9 month experience, following is my observations about Honda Jazz as per your set points:

1> build quality : 8/10

2> engine :8/10. Disappointing low end is a minus factor.

3> long term maintain cost : In my first paid service I shell out 3.5k.

4> mileage : 8/10.

Even during spirited run with full A/c, Jazz gives more than 14kmpl.

5> drive / ride quality: 7/10.

Handling at the corner is susceptible (body roll creeps in) and ride quality at low speed is harsh.

6> comfort :10/10

7>boot space: 10/10

8>ASS: 9/10

9> spare part cost: 8/10

10> looks: highly subjective 7.5/10

So do I consider it the overall best petrol hatch? Yes. Since new Swift has minuscule boot space and weak brakes (except for top model), so I still consider Jazz to the best petrol hatch.

For diesel, new Punto 90 HP is probably the best overall hatch.

i20 has a gem of engine but whats the use of power if you can not use it (due to boatlike handling).

My take..

1> build quality - VW Polo
2> engine :petrol/diesel (but more point when the manufac. has its own engine tech used) - Hyundai i20(Diesel), Maruti Swift = Honda Jazz(Petrol)
3> long term maintain cost - Maruti Swift
4> mileage - Maruti Swift
5> drive / ride quality - FIAT Punto
6> comfort - Fornt Seats - Maruti Swift followed by Jazz, Rear - TATA Indica Vista
7>boot space - Honda Jazz
8>ASS - Maruti Swift
9> spare part cost - Maruti Swift
10> looks - On my perception VW Polo followed by FIAT - Punto

On an overall as per me it should be Maruti Swift followed by Honda Jazz

Best hatchback (Ride quality, comfort, styling)

Which is the best hatchback on the Indian roads considering these parameters?
* The one which offers good ride quality (handling, suspension etc)
* Comfort (space, AC, NVH etc)
* Appearance

Which is the best hatchback that offers a perfect balance considering the above factors? This poll would be helpful to all the TAI members to select their ride of their choice and could be used as reference.

Re: Best hatchback (Ride quality, comfort, styling)

Ride quality over bad roads -

1. Punto/Fabia
2. Vista/Polo/Figo/Sail
3. Swift V2/Liva/Micra/Jazz/Brio
4. i10/i20/Ritz

Comfort (Spacious) -

1. Vista/Liva/Sail/Jazz
2. Swift V2/Figo/Micra/i20
3. Brio/Polo/Punto/Fabia/Ritz/i10

Styling is subjective, my ratings -

1. Polo/Jazz/Nano/Punto
2. i20/Swift V2/Brio
3. Vista/Ritz/Fabia/Figo/Sail
4. Liva/Micra/i10

Booked a Nissan Micra XV diesel today.
Spacious, stylish, nice build, good pick-up, great mileage and feature rich including driver airbag and intelligent keyless entry and ignition

I think Vista is the best family hatchback currently available in our country. Its space(width+leg space+head space),soft ride quality, nice diesel engine, and cheap spares make it a perfect hatchback for a middle class/upper middle class family.

However, when we talk about overall best hatchback, which means to include all virtues of a car like ride, handling, looks, performance etc.,I think Fiat Punbto is the best overall hatch-back currently available in our country;after sales service not with-standing.[:)]

Sorry for choosing different cars. But I havent found all these qualities in a single car:

1> build quality : Punto followed by Hyundai i20 and VW Polo
2> engine :petrol/diesel (but more point when the manufac. has its own engine tech used): For Diesel its Hyundai i20 , MJD doesnt come close to this bigger engine and for petrol its suzuki K12 and kappa2 dual vtvt both stand at same place!
3> long term maintain cost : maruti and hyundai cars
4> mileage : Tata nano followed by hyundai Eon / i10
5> drive / ride quality : Punto followed by hyundai i20
6> comfort: hyundai i20
7>boot space: hyundai i20 followed by polo and Figo
8>ASS : maruti followed by hyundai
9> spare part cost : maruti . However even swift spares cost as much or even more than competitors.
10> looks : i20/swift / punto

Handling= could be added to these parameters: Punto followed by Swift and figo.
