Land Rover’s new Freelander 2 SUV is now available at an introductory price of Rs 33.88 lakh! The Freelander 2 is the smallest SUV from the Land Rover Range. The baby Land Rover first came to India as a completely built unit now though, Tata Motors who own the Land Rover brand have started assembling the vehicle locally through CKD kits imported into the country. The latest move as resulted in a price drop which has made the Freelander 2 a very attractive buy.The base price of the Freelander 2 has dropped to Rs 33.88 lakh due to the lower import duty on the CKD kits. Still, the Freelander is way cheaper than the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 which are its closest rivals
So folks now we get a Land Rover under 35 Lakh[clap]
Please share your thoughts, also share a few pics,Regards

It seems that the lower end version gets a 150 ps engine as supposed to 190 ps engine of the top variant.

Freelander 2 has two variants -

150 bhp SE - 39 lakhs on road in Mumbai
190 bhp HSE - 45 lakhs on road in Mumbai

Of course, there are some feature differences in both the variants as well.

But still the prestige of owning a Land Rover under 40 lacs is not bad IMO, but I agree with you here, with Tata now assembling Freelander in Pune via the CKD route the base model should cost around 20 lacs, that would be some VFM,what say?

That would never happen. Even if they manufacture the car here, ex showroom price would be around 29-30 lakhs with on road price being 34-35 lakhs.

If a freelander is available for 20 lakhs, then -

1) Fortuner, Santa Fe, Aria, Captiva, Endy, etc. will have to be discontinued! Even XUV & Merlin.

2) LR will lose it's "premuim" tag/image as Freelanders will be then a common sight.

Why not, in England Freelander 2 is priced at equivalent to 17 lacs,so if they manufacter everything, from drivetrain to chassis, why can't they sell Freelander at 20 lacs.[thumbsup]

Not quite , rather it will force other manufacturers like toyota, huyndai, tata etc,to correct prices of their overpriced lot like Santa Fe, Fortuner and Aria.

Now a days BMWs,Mercs, and even Audis are a common sight atleast in the 4 metros,so have they lost their premiumness,c'mon LR are here to do business and not remain "neash" as per say. With Tata in their background they should try to change the game big time by completely manufacturing( not only assembling) Freelander and Evoque and aim for the throat of BMW and Mercedise.
BMW never thought about losing their premiumness when they launched the X1,Audi too is going to launch Q3 at around 20 lacs, so why not a LR at 20 lacs??[anger]

In UAE, innova & fortuner costs 6-9 lakhs. Here it costs 14 & 25 lakhs respectively.

Taxes & duties are different in various countries.

Again that will never happen.

Hyundai is burdened as Santa Fe is a CBU & they have to bear import taxes.
Toyota is plain arrogant!
Tata is stupid!

If I am buying a LR and I am spending 40 lacs on it, I would not obviously not want every Tom, Dick & Harry to have it, to be honest.

X1 diesel costs 30 lacs on road. Audi Q3 will also cost the same.

Despite now being assembled in India, Freelander still is very costly to buy.Until Tata can bring the price for the base model down to ~25 lakhs,I don't think it will put sales chart on fire like entry level Mercs and Beamers!!

Read this news -

"They are being assembled now (in India). Unfortunately, today if we were to manufacture here, it would cost more than the assembled one," said Tata, who would hang his boots as the chief of an over USD 100-billion salt-to-software conglomerate later this month on December 28.

Asked about the difficulties in manufacturing these cars in India, Tata said, "Because we do not have scale of manufacturing here, we are selling about a 1,000 Jaguars a year and you would need to be at least four to five times that in order to justify the investment that you would make...
"...so unfortunately, the assembly here is turning out to be more costly than importing the cars because of some silly taxes that they have been imposed on companies."

Tata said that the "government should really look at doing things to incentivise people to bring more investment to India so that it becomes a base of exports, which unfortunately is not happening and China is doing that."

"We are building a plant in China which will export to different parts of the world. Even Saudi Arabia is asking us to come there and India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it," he added.

Xover why will freelander come in a price bracket of 25 lakhs ? Even the x1 and q3 is not in that price bracket.

And anyway freelander comes in segment of q5 and x3 and its priced perfectly .

Come in Mumbai you will see many freelanders more then BMW x3 and q5 .

What is rarely seen is the disco , here in this segment the q7 is selling more then the disco and BMW x5 and merc

I heard they are making a entry level SUV to compete with x1 and q3 .

Jaguar Land Rover's China unit to recall cars over safety worries

BEIJING: Jaguar Land Rover's Chinese subsidiary will recall 337 cars because of substandard fixings in their brakes and steering boxes, China's national product quality watchdog said on Tuesday.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its website that Jaguar Land Rover's China unit is recalling 190 2012 Evoque and Freelander vehicles produced on June 11 this year.

The agency's statement said the recall was prompted by concerns that substandard fixings in the vehicles' rear brake calipers may lead to brakes failing and sudden tyre deflation.

The agency said another 147 2012 Evoque and 2013 Evoque vehicles made between Oct. 20 and Sept. 18 will also be recalled due to problems in their steering boxes, which contain "security risks".

Jaguar Land Rover, the British luxury marque owned by India's Tata MotorsBSE 2.44 %, has relied on strong demand over the past year from emerging markets such as China for its luxury SUVs and sleek sedans to offset sluggish growth in developed markets.

** Thank god we are in India & get parts from UK & assembly in Pune.

The 2013 Freelander 2 is on its way to India, will be launched by March 2013.Here is its review by Autocar India:2013 Land Rover Freelander 2 review, test drive | Review | Autocar India

The Freelander is the best -selling Land Rover in India, but it isn't the class leader. This facelift and nip-and-tuck definitely go some way towards that. Expect the facelifted Freelander to cost marginally more than the current price when it gets to Indian showrooms.
