Some of the older registrations and their respective places are given below. Since i live in Tamilnadu i had given only the details of the registrations of Tamilnadu before 1990. This will be helpful for those who are planning to buy old Ambassadors, Premier Padmini, Old Jeeps or Gypsys etc.

Re: Nostalgic Poll: Old vehicle registrations and their respective places.

Thanks for the useful information, Shrikanth. My grandfather’s scooter used to have the registration number starting with “UGX”. Any idea what it could be?

Thanks. Yes, it’s Uttar Pradesh but I was trying to find out the particular location. Recently I have also seen an old Ambassador with registration number: DIE 1. Quite interesting.

Hi Vishwa
You are correct. Before decades Tamilnadu was known as State of Madras. Similarly Karnataka was known State of Mysore. So the vehicles having registered as MYM, MEN etc were of the 1960's and 70's. Then during 80's, they have changed the regn as CAT, CAV etc.

My relative had a 1973 model Fiat which he bought it from Bangalore. It was registered as MEE.

Till the implementation of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, we used a combination of three English alphabets followed by numerals, from 1 to 9999, to make a unique registration mark. First letter ‘K’ represents the state of Kerala, the second letter shows the series and is fixed by the Government of Kerala when the previous one was exhausted. ‘L’,’R’, ‘E’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ were the alphabets used for the second position. The alphabet in third position represents the District in which the vehicle was registered. Table below shows the alphabets used for representing each District

Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)

‘T’, ‘V’

Kollam (Quilon)

‘Q’, ‘U’

Pathanamthitta

‘B’

Alappuzha (Alleppey)

‘A’, ‘Y’

Kottayam

‘K’, ‘O’

Idukky

‘I’

Ernakulam

‘E’, ‘F’

Thrissur (Trichur)

‘H’, ‘R’

Palakkad (Palghat)

‘P’, ‘G’

Malappuram

‘M’, ‘L’

Kozhikode(Calicut)

‘Z’, ‘D’

Wayanadu

‘W’

Kannur (Cannanore)

‘C’, ‘N’

Kasargod

‘S’

State Transport Undertaking

‘X’

Thus the registration marks issued in Trivandrum District were

KLT-1 to KLT-9999, KLV-1 to KLV-9999
KRT-1 to KRT-9999, KRV-1 to KRT-9999
KET-1 to KET-9999, KEV-1 to KEV-9999
KBT-1 to KBT-9999, KBV-1 to 9999
KCT-1 to KCT-9999, KCV-1 to KCV- not completed
