Volkswagen has given us our first look at the next-generation Amarok pick-up, which will launch in 2022. It will also be one of the first vehicles to be born of a new technical collaboration created between Volkswagen and Ford.

“Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has taken a major strategic step by establishing its cooperation with Ford. The successor to the Amarok will be one of the first fruits of this collaboration,” said Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess during the Volkswagen Group’s 2020 annual media conference.

A teaser image for the new pick-up has been revealed in the form of a design sketch. It hints that the next Amarok will get an extensive makeover, with a new, more aggressive face with a full-width grille not too dissimilar to the Touareg. Down the sides of the vehicle, it will take inspiration from the Atlas SUV sold in China, with boxy wheel arches, and the use of straight-line styling cues.

2020 Volkswagen Amarok XL and XXL pricing and specs

go5avvkhybe8jhjg73b5.jpg

Volkswagen has released Australian pricing and specifications of its factory-endorsed, long-wheelbase Amarok XL and XXL conversions, with prices starting from $10,595 RRP for an XL cab-chassis upgrade.

This comes on top of the initial purchase price of an Amarok, with prices starting from $44,590 (before on-road costs) for a dual-cab TDI400 with a six-speed manual gearbox. The cheapest V6 Amarok, also with a six-speed manual gearbox, is $49,590 before on-road costs.

The work is done by South Australian-based Adaptive Manufacturing, using a conversion engineered originally by Veth Automotive in the Netherlands. Along with new Amarok purchases, the conversion is also available to existing Amarok owners.

ddsjxwawfti6gydgxvol.jpg

And, as a factory-endorsed project, the conversion retains Volkswagen's full five-year warranty.

The conversion is available as either a cab-chassis or with a styleside tub. Opting for the latter adds in a significant increase in cost, because the original tub is modified to suit the exisiting length.

Because the Amarok only comes in dual-cab format, longer extra-cab and single-cab tubs from the range can't be used.

New Volkswagen Amarok due 2022, will have unique look but Ford engines

agb3xx58cwilsmoy3dsq.jpg

The new Volkswagen Amarok – and the first be based on the Ford Ranger – will be in showrooms in 2022, the German car maker has confirmed overnight as both brands provided updates on their joint venture on commercial vehicles.

And while the Ford Ranger sold in Australia is likely to continue to be sourced from Thailand, the Volkswagen Amarok will be sourced from a Ford factory in South Africa.

The current generation Volkswagen Amarok – a standalone model made wholly and solely by VW – is made in Argentina.

A media statement issued by Volkswagen overnight said: “As lead partner, Ford will in future produce the new version of the Amarok for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles based on the Ranger. The Amarok successor will then be made as of 2022 at Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa.”

Ford did not disclose timing for the next generation Ranger, however CarAdvice understands it will precede the next generation VW Amarok and is due some time late in 2021 or in the first half of 2022.

New 2022 Volkswagen Amarok teased again ahead of debut

VW Amarok May teaser.jpg

The Volkswagen Amarok is getting ready for its full reveal this later year, and in anticipation of that moment VW has released another small teaser, this time showing the truck’s new ‘IQ Light’ headlight set-up.

VW-Amarok-2022-(2)_ecjhqa.jpg
The short video first shows the IQ Light, an optional extra for the new Amarok, integrating active full beam dipping and cornering lights. The video then pans out to reveal a full (albeit shadowy) outline of the upcoming 2022 Amarok. It looks like the new Amarok won’t deviate too much from the original when it comes to the styling; the grille will incorporate the VW logo, albeit in a slightly slimmer form. We can also see a grab handle in the truck’s load bay.

VW-Amarok-2022-(7)_or1jmj.jpg

Previous spy images have also revealed it’ll feature a set of side steps, along with a distinctive two-tone rear bumper and ‘Amarok’ script pressed into the tailgate.

VW’s new workhorse will share its underpinnings with the next-generation Ford Ranger. The Amarok is one of a number of new, jointly developed commercial vehicles as part of a tie-up between the two brands that will see pick-ups, vans and some van-based passenger cars revealed over the coming years. The overall silhouette of the Amarok is a clear indication of the two pick-up trucks sharing the same platform.

VW-Amarok-2022-(11)_vzwxgp.jpg

The Amarok will be larger than its predecessor, 100mm longer with a total body length of 5,350mm. However, the wheelbase grows even more, by 175mm to 3,270mm. VW says that this results in substantially more room in the cabin for passengers, while the shorter overhangs mean it is more capable off-road than before. Total payload increases to 1.2 tonnes, while more engine and gearbox variants will be capable of achieving a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.

VW-Amarok-2022-(14)_mgmdc8.jpg

An interior sketch gives us a glimpse at the pick-up’s interior, revealing a completely new dashboard design that features Volkswagen’s latest steering wheel and its newest “Virtual Cockpit” digital instruments. A new central infotainment system also features, and it appears the brand will retain some physical switchgear, unlike in some of its latest passenger models.

Volkswagen describes its Ford Ranger rival as having “a completely new appearance inside and out” and “even more extensive equipment on board”, including “significantly more driver-assistance systems” and new connectivity features. The company also claims it will feature “innovations that have not been seen before in this segment.”

Technical details for the Amarok are still thin on the ground, but VW has confirmed that the pick-up will be powered by a turbocharged V6 diesel engine. Its chassis sibling, the Ford Ranger, features a 3.0-litre unit, and it’s all but certain that the same powertrain will be used in the Amarok.

Like the Ford, the engine should be linked to a 10-speed automatic gearbox and a new permanent four-wheel-drive system, which promises to make the new Amarok faster and much more capable than the previous-generation model.

Entry-level versions of the Amarok will likely be powered by one of Ford’s turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel units. The new Ranger is already offered with updated versions of the previous model’s four-cylinder units – and there’s little chance that Volkswagen would re-engineer the platform to suit its own four-cylinder diesels, because the cost would be prohibitive.

There are plans for further expansion, so it’s likely that Volkswagen will follow in Ford’s footsteps and launch a pure-electric flagship version of the Amarok. Lars Menge, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles product marketing boss, said: “In terms of drive system we are continuing to use highly efficient TDI diesel engines for the new Amarok.

2022 Volkswagen Amarok interior revealed

VW Amarok interior reveal.jpg
Inside, the Amarok uses a leather steering wheel lifted from the Passat adorned with plenty of buttons. The central touchscreen has grown from 6.3 inches to 12 inches, there’s a 10-inch option as well.

The infotainment on the screen can be configured to show a variety of driver assistance systems (over 30 on the new Amarok), including lane-keeping, lane-change, speed assist and road sign recognition. Other functions such as the satellite navigation, air-conditioning and the sound system also feature as main menus. Underneath the display, we see a row of physical switches that provide direct access to some of the Amarok’s functions.

Volkswagen says the Amarok will use the brand’s newest ‘Virtual Cockpit’, so behind the steering wheel, and expect to see TFT dials, a range of trip displays and the ability to display the navigation screen between the dials.

The German car giant has also teased what the outside of the Amarok will look like, most recently showing the new pick-up truck’s tailgate.

New 2022 Volkswagen Amarok to be revealed on 7 July

So it’s not surprising Volkswagen has announced a second iteration of the Amarok will be revealed on 7 July. As part of a deal between VW and Ford for commercial vehicles, the new Amarok will share plenty of components with the American brand’s new Ranger model after the two firms agreed on a strategic alliance back in 2018

We already have a good idea how the new Amarok will look, inside and out; Volkswagen recently gave us our first view of the interior, and it looks like the Amarok will maintain its position at the premium end of the pick-up market with a plush cabin.

Lots of technology and features will be taken from VW’s car range - including a leather steering wheel adorned with plenty of buttons. The central touchscreen has grown from 6.3 inches to a maximum size of 12 inches, although there’s a 10-inch system as well.

The infotainment on the screen can be configured to show a variety of driver assistance systems (over 30 on the new Amarok), including lane-keeping, lane-change, speed assist and road sign recognition. The German car giant has also teased what the outside of the Amarok will look like, most recently showing the new pick-up truck’s tailgate.

Volkswagen has previously announced the second-generation Amarok will still be available with a diesel V6 engine option alongside a choice of four-cylinder 2.0-litre TDI powertrains. Our first undisguised look at the rear of the Amarok confirms the design previous spy shots have hinted at.

In a short video posted on the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle Twitter page, the Amarok’s rear lights appear different to those in the initial design sketches Volkswagen posted back in 2020, with the clusters integrating a narrow vertical light signature.

Unsurprisingly, the tailgate is similar to the current Amarok, although the ‘Amarok’ script is pressed into the panel. Previous spy images have also revealed it’ll feature a set of side steps, along with a rear grab handle in the bed.

New images of 2022 Volkswagen Amarok before 7 July reveal

Volkswagen has issued some final teasers for the next-generation Amarok pick-up truck, ahead of the newcomer’s reveal on 7 July. The images show a chunky all-terrain tyre wrapped over a new design of diamond-cut alloy wheel. Above that we can see an aggressive, squared-off wheel arch and part of the new ‘IQ Light’ headlight cluster.

New 2022 Volkswagen Amarok pick-up arrives with V6 power

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -7.jpg

It's been away for two years, but the Volkswagen Amarok has finally returned as an all-new model. As with its predecessor, the Amarok will focus more on the premium end of the pick-up market, filling a void that was left by the short-lived Mercedes X-Class, as well as top-spec versions of the Amarok's main rivals, the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -14.jpg

The new Amarok has been co-developed with the Ford Ranger, but the two trucks are distinctly different in terms of style. The only parts that are shared are the centre section of the bodyshell, from the base of the windscreen to the back of the passenger cab, and the roof rails, where fitted, everything else is unique to the specific model, even the door skins.
Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -2.jpg

Up front, the Amarok has a high-set, grille design that stretches across the front of the truck and has plenty in common with VW's SUV range. There are squared-off wheelarch blisters, while the rear end has C-shaped tail-lights and the Amarok name stamped into the tailgate.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -3.jpg

Inside, the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster and large portrait-style touchscreen are shared with the Ranger - as are the column stalks and window switches - but the rest of the cabin is of VW's own design, and has been given a premium edge. The steering wheel is similar to that found in VW's passenger cars, while the Amarok will use VW's own operating system, which includes climate controls within the large touchscreen.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -5.jpg

For the global launch, Volkswagen has confirmed two body styles, five engine options and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes, although which versions come to the UK will be confirmed closer to launch in early 2023.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -9.jpg

The Amarok measures 5,350mm long, 1,910mm wide and has a 3,270mm wheelbase, all figures that are larger than the old model's, so there's more room in the cab and in the bed, too. Here the new Amarok will be able to take payloads of up to 1.16 tonnes, while heavy-duty lashing eyes that can cope with loads of up to 500kg are fitted. VW is also offering an electrically-operated roll-top load cover to keep items in the bed hidden from sight. A 3.5-tonne towing weight is also on offer.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -10.jpg

As well as a five-seat double-cab pick-up, VW has taken advantage of the tie-up with Ford to offer a single cab model with a longer load bed, too. This can take two Europallets compared with the single Europallet that can be fitted in the bed of the double cab model. As well as two body options, VW will offer a range of accessories, including load covers, towing equipment, cycle racks and even a four-berth roof tent – the roof is rated to carry up to 350kg.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -12.jpg

The engine range kicks off with a 148bhp 2.0 TDI four-cylinder diesel, then there's a 168bhp version of that unit and a BiTDI twin-turbodiesel with either 201bhp or 206bhp, depending on market. At the top of the range, the 3.0-litre V6 TDI has either 238bhp or 247bhp, again depending on market. VW will also offer a 298bhp 2.3 TSI four-cylinder petrol for certain markets, which is a rebranded version of Ford's EcoBoost four-cylinder engine previously seen in the Ford Mustang and Focus ST/RS. We'll have more information on which of these engines will be sold in the UK closer to the truck’s launch here.

Volkswagen Amarok 2022 -13.jpg

All engines over 206bhp will come with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, while lower-spec cars have a choice of six-speed manual and auto transmissions. As before, 4MOTION four-wheel drive is on offer, with European-spec trucks featuring permanent 4WD as standard.
