New speed limits set to be implemented in India

News source:New speed limits set to be enforced in India shortly

The current speed limit regulations were originally implemented in 1989 when road conditions and automobile penetration in the country were nothing like what they are today. A quarter of a century later, the Indian government has decided to revise the speed limits based on the number of passengers the vehicles carry.

Economic Times reports that the new speed limits will be put into action shortly. The revised regulations are said to take into account the overall improvement in the road infrastructure over the course of the last two and a half decades.

Given that most of the national highways now have multiple lanes, the speed limit for passenger cars having seating capacity of 8 or less passengers is set to be fixed at 100 km/h while passenger vehicles which have more than 8 seats would be allowed to ply at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.

Speed limit for the motorcycles will be increased from 50 km/h to 80 km/h. Goods carriers are also set to be permitted to travel at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The new class of automobiles, the quadricycles, will have their speed limit at 70 km/h.

The revised speed limit law would allow state governments and local authorities to set their own speed limit regulations for vehicles traversing the state highways and city rural roads.

In a bid to improve road safety, the Indian government has previously announced that it will make ABS brakes mandatory for new commercial vehicles starting from April 2015

Good move, I would say. However, this should be paired with speed gun checks and instant and heavy fining for violators.

On another note, for quality 6 lane expresways, they can raise the speed limit to 120 for cars. Anything more than that would be seriously dangerous IMO.

Seems to be a realistic move. I remember Two wheelers being pulled over cos they assumed that 80 is the speed limit for them to as for cars on BIA road.

I wonder how many of these cost cut ABS are going to bring safety, imagine a truck meets a couple of potholes & the ABS just skips the braking. Ouch !

Glad they're moving into the correct decade. It's definitely time that speed limits are raised to a more logical level, which people might actually consider obeying.

But I can see two problems with the compulsory ABS for commercial vehicles that they should address:

1. Technical. Like Prads mentioned, these systems could be badly designed and ineffective.
2. Enforcement. The police barely even tries to enforce working tail/brake lamps and indicators on commercial vehicles, suddenly they think they can handle inspecting every truck, bus, etc. for ABS!

Are there any plans to make ABS and/or Airbags compulsory in new passenger vehicles soon or are car manufacturers still resisting?

do they(Govt. staffs) know how to check if the bus or lorry is equiped with ABS breaks, or does RTO knows on how to inspect is the vehicle is equiped with ABS or not ?

if not the lorry or bus owners find a cheeper sollution in the form of a sticker stating "this vehicle is equiped with ABS breaks"

I doubt they will be able to check. Especially since Trucks tend to have irregular and haphazard wiring it could take hours to locate ABS components on each truck, which is impractical!

I completely agree that is the most likely outcome. Similar situation in Kenya where it is necessary for Public Service Vehicles to have speed governors (at 80 Kph), but these are often found bounding down highways at 120+ Kph because the police only checks for a sticker or receipt, both of which are easier to obtain than an actual speed governor.

Now it's official. Cars can drive at a maximum speed of 100 kmph and motorcycles at 80 kmph. The road transport ministry has notified the revised speed limits.
As per the notification, vehicles used for carrying nine or more passengers such as mini bus or buses can now ply at a maximum speed of 80 kmph while vehicles used for carrying not more than eight passengers like cars are allowed to run at the maximum speed of 100 kmph. The speed limit of goods vehicles has also been increased to 80 kmph.

Road transport ministry notifies revised speed limits; cars can run at 100kmph, bikes at 80 | ET Auto

Govt. should maintain road quality and other safety for meeting desired speed limit. Similarly, they should make Airbags and ABS compulsory for vehicles manufactured herafter.
