The all-new Range Rover Sport has been caught on camera during its winter testing programme, ahead of its scheduled launch in 2022. The third-generation model will be Land Rover’s answer to premium performance SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne.

Apart from a new roof rack, the design of this Range Rover Sport mule hasn’t changed over our previous sighting. It retains the same boxy proportions as the current car, although details such as its headlights and tail lights will take on a sleeker Velar-inspired look.

Land Rover’s next-generation 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, first used by the all-new Defender, will also likely feature. In the Defender, the unit features a powerful pair of processors and Blackberry operating system, which allows the system to perform both entertainment functions (such as music streaming) and over-the-air updates without any appreciable loss in performance.

All-new 2022 Range Rover spied during road testing

The heavy camouflage around this development mule’s nose and flanks makes it difficult to pick out specific styling updates. However, we expect the SUV’s headlights and tail lights will adopt a sleeker Velar-inspired look compared to the current model.

Past and current iterations of the Range Rover have offered buyers a spacious layout with luxurious accommodation for four adults – and we expect that will remain the case with this new model. Our previously spied long-wheelbase version should also give buyers the option of an executive seating pack for the second row, which adds two larger rear seats that have a far greater range of adjustability for added comfort.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Makes Global Debut

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover has made its global debut entering its fifth generation. The all-new offering sports an evolutionary design language with smoother lines and a minimalist approach while packing the latest technologies and hardware. The new Range Rover is based on the automaker's MLA-Flex platform and will be offered in both standard and long-wheelbase versions. For the first time, the automaker is offering the option of a seven-seater too, thanks to a 200 mm longer wheelbase.

New 2022 Range Rover Sport: specifications and UK launch date

Range Rover Sport render .jpg

Land Rover has only just pulled the sheets off the fifth-generation Range Rover – but the company already has another new car almost ready to go. The next-generation Range Rover Sport will follow the brand’s flagship off-roader into the showrooms at the end of 2022, featuring the same design language and technology.

Range Rover Sport spyshots 2021-2.jpg
When it eventually goes on sale, the new Range Rover Sport will rival everything from the BMW X5 to the pure-electric Audi e-tron. Land Rover will achieve this breadth of ability by moving the SUV onto its new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which can accomodate 48-volt mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

Range Rover Sport SVR spyshots .jpg

Jaguar Land Rover has previously announced it will collaborate with BMW on the electric drive units for its next-generation vehicles. The electric Range Rover will hit UK showrooms in 2024 – and we expect an electric Range Rover Sport will follow closely behind, using the same EV technology as the upcoming BMW i5 and i7 saloons.
Buyers will also be offered a performance-oriented, SVR-badged variant, as illustrated by the sporty-looking prototypes in our gallery. Despite the brand’s focus on electrification, we expect this model will take a more old-school approach to performance, featuring the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine found in the BMW X5 M Competition.

Range Rover Sport SVR spyshots -3.jpg

Land Rover has already confirmed that the same engine will be available in the full-sized Range Rover, albeit only in BMW’s detuned 523bhp guise. However, given the Sport SVR’s racy brief, we anticipate it’ll get the full 616bhp that the engine is capable of producing, putting its performance on par with the fastest version of the X5.

New 2022 Range Rover Sport: design and interior

The previous Range Rover Sport was one of Land Rover’s best-selling models, outselling the full-size Range Rover almost two-to-one. In Jaguar Land Rover’s most recent financial results, it was the group’s joint-second best-selling car, trailing only the Evoque.

Range Rover Sport SVR spyshots -6.jpg

As such, Land Rover hasn’t thrown the old Sport’s styling book out of the window. Although these prototypes are still heavily camouflaged, their styling looks to be evolutionary, blending the current model’s sleeker SUV shape with a few racy styling tweaks borrowed from the British brand’s other cars.

The overall length of the wheelbase appears to be the same, which would make it just under three metres long, but the car’s front and rear overhangs are significantly shorter. The fake panelling also conceals a more steeply raked roofline and a larger tailgate spoiler.

In detail, the Sport’s nose will be more like the Velar’s, sharing its slim grille and narrow headlights, while the rear appears to borrow its horizontal wrap-around tail lights. The pop-out door handles are another new addition for the latest Range Rover Sport. Our exclusive images show how the new car could look once the wraps are pulled off.

We’ve also been sent spy shots from Auto Express reader Peter Siu, which offer a good look at the new Range Rover Sport’s interior and infotainment screen. The setup in question looks to be JLR’s recently introduced Pivi Pro system, with an 11.4-inch touchscreen, which we expect will be used across the group’s line-up of next-generation MLA-based models.

New 2022 Range Rover Sport snapped in lighter camouflage

Range Rover Sport 2022-10.jpg

Land Rover will soon follow up the launch of the fifth-generation Range Rover with an all-new version of the Range Rover Sport. It’ll hit UK showrooms at the end of this year, featuring the similar design language and technology as its bigger sibling - and these latest spy shots of the car caught testing give us a good idea of the styling details that will appear.

Range Rover Sport 2022-6.jpg
Land Rover’s new car will compete with everything from the BMW X5 to the pure-electric Audi e-tron. The British brand is targeting this breadth of ability by moving the Range Rover Sport onto its new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which supports 48-volt mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

Range Rover Sport 2022-8.jpg

These latest spy shots offer our clearest look yet at the next Range Rover Sport’s styling. It’s an evolution over the previous model, featuring the same rough silhouette as its predecessor with a few key design details inspired by the latest Range Rover, such as the flush-fit door handles and headlight cluster that extend round and onto the front wings.

The front grille and bumper arrangement is more like the Velar’s, while the rear end also seems to borrow that car’s wrap-around tail lights. The length of the wheelbase appears similar to the old car’s, too, which would make it just under three metres long. However, the car’s front and rear overhangs are significantly shorter.

This evolutionary approach to the Sport’s design may well be less challenging than the Range Rover. The Range Rover Sport is one of the brand’s best-selling models, with the previous version of the car outselling the full-size Range Rover almost 2:1. It was also Jaguar Land Rover’s joint-second best-seller in the group’s most recent financial results, trailing only the Evoque.

Land Rover’s updates to the interior will be more extensive, though. Spy shots sent by Auto Express rear Peter Siu provide a good look at the new Range Rover Sport’s cabin and infotainment screen. The car will feature JLR’s recently introduced Pivi Pro system, with an 11.4-inch touchscreen, which we expect will be used across the group’s line-up of next-generation MLA-based models.

New 2022 Range Rover Sport: engines and drivetrains
Buyers will still have a choice of combustion engines on the next Range Rover Sport, but the big news is that the SUV is also going to be available with a pure-electric powertrain. Jaguar Land Rover has previously confirmed that it will collaborate with BMW on the electric drive units for its next-generation vehicles.

The electric Range Rover has already been scheduled for a UK launch in 2024 – and we expect a pure-electric Range Rover Sport will follow closely behind, using the same EV technology as the upcoming BMW i5 and i7 saloons.

2022 Range Rover Sport caught testing

2022 Range Rover Sport spyshots-2.jpg

Land Rover is gearing up for the launch of its new third-generation Range Rover Sport at the end of 2022 and these fresh spy shots have given us our best look yet at the new premium SUV.
2022 Range Rover Sport spyshots.jpg

The new Range Rover Sport will follow in the tyre tracks of the fifth-generation Range Rover revealed in 2021 and we can see that it’ll carry over plenty of design language from its bigger sibling with the traditional Range Rover cues very much in evidence. The evolutionary design approach is not surprising given that the Range Rover Sport is one of the brand’s best-selling cars, with the previous version outselling the full-size Range Rover almost 2:1.

Range Rover Sport 2022-4.jpg

The front upper grille and LED headlight arrangement on the Sport will be thinner than the Range Rover’s and more like that of the Velar. The lower grille, meanwhile, is more angular and aggressive than the Range Rover’s minimal design.

Range Rover Sport spyshots 2021-3.jpg

The rear lights on the new Range Rover were a major change over the previous model, being incorporated into a black panel that becomes opaque when the lights aren’t on. Although it’s unclear from these spy shots, we could see the same on the new Range Rover Sport albeit in a wrap-around layout. The rectangular twin exhausts are also a prominent feature and signify the extra sporting intent of this car compared to the Range Rover.

At the side there are flush-fitting door handles like on the rest of the Range Rover model lineup and vent covers in the front wings. The length of the wheelbase appears similar to the old car’s, too, which would make it just under three metres long. However, the car’s front and rear overhangs are significantly shorter.

Land Rover’s updates to the interior will be extensive. Spy shots previously sent to Auto Express by Peter Siu provide a good look at the new Range Rover Sport’s cabin and infotainment screen. All-new 2022 Range Rover Sport to be revealed on 10 May

Land Rover has confirmed that an all-new Range Rover Sport will be revealed on 10 May, bringing an end to a near nine-year reign for the second-generation version.
Following on from latest year’s Mk5 Range Rover launch, the smaller, but more popular Sport model will be revealed in third-generation form. Teased online by the brand, Land Rover’s social media post doesn’t reveal anything new about the sporty SUV, but it does confirm the May reveal.

The Sport is likely to carry over much of the same design language as its Range Rover sibling. It’s not surprising Land Rover are playing it safe, as the smaller car outsells the full-size model almost 2:1.

The latest spy shots suggest it’ll look similar to our exclusive main image, with the front upper grille and LED headlight arrangement on the Sport thinner than the Range Rover’s and more like that of the Velar. The lower grille, meanwhile, is more angular and aggressive than the Range Rover’s minimal design.

The rear lights on the new Range Rover were a major change over the previous model, being incorporated into a black panel that becomes opaque when the lights aren’t on. There’s still hope for petrolheads, though, as Land Rover will continue to produce the Range Rover Sport SVR, as hinted by the aggressive-looking prototypes in our gallery. What’s more, we also expect this model will take an old-school approach to performance, featuring the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine found in the BMW X5 M Competition.

First official image of new 2022 Range Rover Sport

The third-generation model has been teased by Land Rover this week, with action shots of it off-road. A vent behind the front wheel and the blacked out roof are design traits carried over from the current model. The slim headlights and aggressive side vents are also set to make a return on the new Range Rover Sport.

The rear lights on the new Range Rover were a major change over the previous model, being incorporated into a black panel that becomes opaque when the lights aren’t on. 2022 Range Rover Sport arrives with PHEV power and minimalist design

Range Rover Sport 2022-8.jpg

Like its bigger brother, the Range Rover Sport features familiar family styling cues, but with a new sense of minimalism and modernity – so it’s no surprise that Jaguar Land Rover creative director, Gerry McGovern says it follows his modernist design philosophy. “It blends Range Rover luxury and capability with sporting character,” says McGovern. “It’s a redefinition of sporting luxury.”

Range Rover Sport 2022-5.jpg
At a glance, the new car is clearly still a Range Rover Sport, both in proportion and detail. Put the outgoing car next to it, however, and the differences are far more marked.

Range Rover Sport 2022-4.jpg

The new Sport is larger, especially inside, with a 75mm increase in wheelbase, yet it hides its bulk well with a short front overhang and a slightly longer overhang at the back – all supposedly to enhance a sense of movement.

Range Rover Sport 2022-3.jpg

The design team talks about three key lines to the car: the roofline slopes downwards towards a larger rear spoiler over the back window; the waistline is more angled – they call it an architectural horizon – with no window finishers and seamless, flush-fitting glass; then there’s the lower line that sweeps upwards, with all three converging at the back.

Range Rover Sport 2022-9.jpg

Flush-fitting door handles help to clean up the sides, while at the front the slimmest LED headlights fitted to a Land Rover (which can feature 1.3 million micromirrors inside) sit astride a slim, visor-like grille.

Range Rover Sport 2022-11.jpg

As with the Range Rover, the rear of the Sport is more different than before, taking its lead from the Velar and Evoque. The numberplate has been moved lower down to give a greater expanse of sheet metal at the back, intersected by another central visor-like strip featuring bold Range Rover lettering, flanked by new, flush surface LED rear lights.

Range Rover Sport 2022-13.jpg

Dynamic models get more prominent front and rear bumpers, and body-coloured side skirts with bigger alloys – up to 23 inches (which are lighter than the old 22s), while the standard wheel size is 20 inches.

Range Rover Sport 2022-14.jpg

It all looks very premium, apart from a couple of minor details: the rear camera hanging down just above the number plate – not exactly a minimalist solution – and the traditional Sport side blades ahead of the front doors that look a little cheap.

Range Rover Sport 2022-15.jpg

The interior, according to McGovern, is “Closer than ever in terms of luxury to the Range Rover” – and it looks it. Again, minimalism is hard at work with the thick leather-clad horizontal line broken by a 13.1-inch infotainment screen that gently curves around the dashboard and flows up from a higher centre console that cocoons the driver and front passenger.

Range Rover Sport 2022-22.jpg

Thankfully, there are separate controls for the heating, ventilation and driving modes, with plenty of storage spaces hidden and some that are more obvious. Of course, there’s a 13.7-inch digital dash display, too, sitting behind a smaller-diameter steering wheel.
