Electric SUVs are in vogue at the moment, and at Volvo offshoot Polestar, a rival for the likes of the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace is firmly in the Swedish marque’s sights.

The third model in the line-up will follow company convention and be called the Polestar 3. It will be a zero-emissions SUV tasked with carving out a unique identity for the company when it arrives in 2022.

To that end, it’ll be among the first cars from Polestar and Volvo to use the new SPA2 platform for large cars. But more importantly, the Polestar 3 will continue the brand’s move away from Volvo design cues and be the first to establish Polestar’s design identity, Auto Express can reveal.

Design Director Max Missoni explained to us that the company’s recently revealed Precept Concept is a strong indication of what’s to come, and that the Polestar 3 SUV will be heavily inspired by it. “The next car that Polestar will launch is the Polestar 3,” said Missoni. “It will be a high-performance SUV that is a different car in its bodystyle, but I would say the Precept serves as a precursor to the design language that you will see in that car.”

Missoni explained how Polestar has gradually separated from Volvo from a styling perspective. According to the design chief, while the Polestar 1 was based heavily on the Volvo Concept Coupé from 2013, the Polestar 2 represented a parting of the ways. The Polestar 3 will be “the next bigger step” and our exclusive images preview how it could look two years from now. It’s expected to use some, but not all, of the Precept’s design cues, and repackage them as a coupé-like SUV, not unlike the Jaguar I-Pace.

The swooping shape is an important factor. The Polestar 3 will arrive at around the same time as the all-electric version of the next-generation Volvo XC90, which is also due in 2022 based on the same architecture. The two cars will share the same chassis and battery technology, while a range of 310 miles has been rumoured for the Polestar 3 in the past.

New 2022 Polestar 3: electric SUV shown in new image

Polestar 3 teaser image.jpg

Polestar has put out a revealing teaser image of its third production model, the Polestar 3 electric SUV, ahead of its global launch next year. The company has also confirmed plans for 10-fold growth by 2025 with three new models.

Volvo Polestar 3.jpg

The new image, which shows the Polestar 3 with only a light camouflage wrap over its production body, reveals that the new Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X rival adopts design cues from the firm’s Precept luxury saloon concept translated onto a taller SUV body. That’s clear in particular in the front end design, which uses a similar T-shaped headlight profile and sloping bonnet.
The car’s design is intended to create a larger degree of visual separation between Polestar and sister brand, Volvo. Although it will share its SPA2 platform with the next-generation Volvo XC90, it will be very different in terms of design and is unlikely to offer three rows of seats, being more of a style-focused electric SUV in the vein of the Audi e-tron Sportback.

The Polestar 3 will also share its production facility with the next XC90 at Volvo’s South Carolina plant. “Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. It’ll be the most important market for the model, but it will be globally released and also built in China for export into the European market.

Hitting back at the growing number of young electric car startups Polestar is competing with, Ingenlath said “We are not a virtual company waiting to build factories and sell cars; we are an actual company already building and selling cars around the world. Our two award-winning cars [Polestar 1 and 2] are on the road in 14 markets globally and we expect our global sales volume to reach around 29,000 vehicles this year.

Polestar plans to enter three new markets and three new cars, plus advance further in existing markets. The company’s ambitious growth target is to turn 29,000 vehicles into 290,000 vehicles by 2025. Polestar will also list on the Nasdaq stock exchange, as first announced in September.

Polestar 3: design director explains SUV’s look

In 2020, Polestar’s Design Director Max Missoni explained how the Precept would be a strong indication of what’s to come for the brand, with the 3 SUV the first in a number of models to be inspired by it.

“The next car that Polestar will launch is the Polestar 3,” said Missoni. “It will be a high-performance SUV that is a different car in its bodystyle, but I would say the Precept serves as a precursor to the design language that you will see in that car.”

Missoni also confirmed that the Precept’s interior and infotainment system preview what comes next inside Polestar models. “This is quite a realistic statement of our future,” he stressed.

Missoni explained how Polestar has gradually separated from Volvo from a styling perspective. According to the design chief, while the Polestar 1 was based heavily on the Volvo Concept Coupé from 2013, the Polestar 2 represented a parting of the ways.

The Polestar 3 will be “the next bigger step” and our exclusive images preview how it could look when Polestar reveals it in 2022. It’s expected to use some, but not all, of the Precept’s design cues, and repackage them as a coupé-like SUV, not unlike the Jaguar I-Pace.

Polestar has announced that its new 3 model will launch in October this year, with customers being able to order the all-electric SUV from the day of its premiere.

It’ll provide fresh competition in the rapidly growing large electric SUV segment, rivalling the likes of the Audi e-tron and BMW iX.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, also revealed the brand will be forming a global partnership with the car rental company Hertz to supply 65,000 cars over the next five years - despite Polestar conceding the amount of vehicles being delivered this year is down to 50,000 from 65,000.

Ingenlath also said, “Any short- to medium-term economic effects have not dented our goal of selling 290,000 cars in 2025 – 10 times more than we sold in 2021”. The Polestar 3 is expected to form a large chunk of those sales.

A teaser image of the new Polestar 3 has already been revealed, with only a light camouflage wrap over its production body. This picture highlighted design cues from the firm’s Precept luxury saloon concept had been translated onto a taller SUV body. This is most obvious in the front end design, which uses a similar T-shaped headlight profile, thin blanked-off grille and sloping bonnet. The 3 also appears to have flush-fitting door handles to help lower its drag coefficient.

New 2022 Polestar 3 revealed in teaser image

Polestar range teaser.jpg

A new teaser image has revealed the rear of the Polestar 3 SUV, set to debut later this year. Pitched as a sporty SUV-coupe, the Polestar 3 will sit above the Polestar 2 and the upcoming Polestar 4 in terms of size.
The latest undisguised images show the rear, alongside the new Polestar 5. There’s a full-width rear light bar and a similar rear bumper design to the Polestar 2. A panoramic glass roof panel that curves down towards the rear roof spoiler gives the Polestar 3 a sportier profile. That rear spoiler isn’t the only aerodynamic feature on show. In a recent image posted by Polestar we could see air vents at the front of the bonnet, flush-fitting door handles and vents behind the rear wheels.

Wide rear haunches lead into a C-pillar not too dissimilar from the Volvo C40's and the front has a pinched leading edge which all helps to give the Polestar 3 a sportier look. That’s just as well, as it’ll be pitched against the likes of the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback and Tesla Model Y.

The Polestar 3 is scheduled to debut in October and customers will be able to order the all-electric SUV from the day of its reveal.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, recently revealed the brand will be forming a global partnership with the car rental company Hertz to supply 65,000 cars over the next five years - despite Polestar conceding the amount of vehicles being delivered this year is down to 50,000 from 65,000.

Ingenlath also said, “Any short- to medium-term economic effects have not dented our goal of selling 290,000 cars in 2025 – 10 times more than we sold in 2021”. The Polestar 3 is expected to form a large chunk of those sales.

The Polestar 3 will also share its production facility with the next XC90 at Volvo’s South Carolina plant and should start in early 2023. “Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. It’ll be the most important market for the model, but it will be globally released and also built in China for export into the European market.

The Polestar 3’s overall design shares plenty with the firm’s Precept luxury saloon concept, translated onto a taller SUV body. This is most obvious in the front end design, which uses a similar T-shaped headlight profile, thin blanked-off grille and sloping bonnet.

“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots.”

In 2020, Polestar’s Design Director Max Missoni explained how the Precept would be a strong indication of what’s to come for the brand, with the 3 SUV the first in a number of models to be inspired by it.
