Peugeot is considering refocusing its flagship SUV, the 5008, into a more practicality-focused model when its next generation arrives in 2022,

Like its smaller sibling the 3008, the Peugeot 5008 was revamped completely in 2017, switching from a pseudo-MPV into a more conventional SUVs. The earlier model’s poor fortunes have been reversed as a result, helping to swell Peugeot’s balance sheet.

A facelifted 5008 should arrive by the end of this year. But looking further into the future, customer analysis has led some inside Peugeot to push for the next new generation of the car to be moved in a more extreme direction - forgoing a little SUV style in favour of practicality that its owner base seems to appreciate.

As with the next 3008, the next 5008 should be based on an evolution of the current car’s EMP2 platform, called EMP2 V4. This will allow the car to be powered by petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure-electric powertrains.

New Peugeot 5008 facelift arrives with fresh look

This is the updated Peugeot 5008. The revised family SUV features a number of technological refinements and refreshed design, and will go on sale in the UK at the end of this year.

Peugeot’s most noticeable changes have been made to the 5008’s exterior styling; the SUV now shares the same family face as the 208 hatchback and 508 saloon, with a large, frameless radiator grille, similarly shaped headlamp units and a pair of extended, hook-shaped LED daytime running lights.

Inside, Peugeot has revised the 5008’s infotainment setup with an updated version of the car’s 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an all-new 10-inch infotainment screen which controls all the car’s interior functions. The latter features a series of seven piano keys, which provide convenient access to functions such as navigation, climate control and media.

Technology upgrades include a tweaked lane-keeping assist system, updated autonomous emergency braking and new adaptive cruise control, which can automatically stop and restart the vehicle in heavy traffic. Peugeot has also updated its traffic sign recognition system, to include warnings for one-way systems and no overtaking zones.

Peugeot’s Night Vision system is also now available. The technology uses an infrared sensor to detect pedestrians and animals up to 250 metres ahead of the vehicle in low light levels, with the images displayed on the car’s digital instrument binnacle.

Facelifted Peugeot 5008: trim and equipment

Peugeot has also restructured the 5008’s trim-levels into a three-tier system. The SUV’s line-up is now separated into the brand’s Active, Allure and GT models – the specifications of which can each be bolstered with the addition of an options pack that adds a specific range of cosmetic and technology tweaks, depending on the trim-level.
Active models come as standard with 17-inch alloys, two-zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors and a DAB radio. The Active Pack variant adds electrically folding door mirrors, front parking sensors and a 180-degree rear view camera.

Peugeot’s mid-range Allure model builds on the specification of the Active Pack model with 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, privacy glass and the improved 10-inch infotainment system. The Allure Pack variant adds keyless entry and start, unique fabric upholstery, a reclining passenger seat and an ambient interior lighting system.

The range-topping 5008 GT comes with a set of dedicated 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a contrasting black roof and a frameless rear-view mirror. Red Nappa leather upholstery and dark lime wood door trims are also newly available as part of the facelift.

Peugeot’s GT Pack model adds to this specification with a set of newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free tailgate, a 515W Focal premium audio system and a pair of electrically adjustable and massaging front seats.

Finally, Peugeot now offers a Black Pack for the 5008, which swaps the car’s standard grille, exterior trim and roof rails for gloss black replacements. The option pack also adds a set of black 19-inch alloy wheels and some new satin black badging.

Engines and drivetrains
Like the outgoing model, the facelifted 5008’s engine-range comprises four units: two petrols and two diesels. Petrol buyers have their choice of either a 128bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit or a 178bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit. Both engines can be had with an eight-speed automatic, although the former engine can be fitted with a six-speed manual.

New Peugeot 508 facelift spied ahead of 2023 launch

Peugeot looks poised to introduce a mid-life facelift for the 508 saloon next year, based on these new spy shots. The firm’s Volkswagen Arteon rival received a minor refresh for 2022, but a more comprehensive overhaul is in the works to see out the 508’s term.

This prototype car’s bodywork is heavily camouflaged, but it’s possible to pick out its new set of headlights and sharper fang-like LED running lights extending into the bumper. A redesigned front grille could also be in the pipeline, bringing the styling into line with the 308 hatchback.

The 508’s radar sensing hardware appears to remain unchanged in this facelifted model, suggesting that any improvements to its driver assist systems will be software-derived. The wheels fitted to this prototype are the same diamond-cut items currently available, although new designs are expected to arrive as part of the updates.

At the rear, the general architecture will remain the same as the outgoing model, but a new LED running light signature is visible through the camouflage, and Peugeot’s new crest logo will feature throughout.

Inside, the 508 will retain its two-tier dashboard design built around Peugeot’s i-Cockpit layout, which uses a small-diameter steering wheel set below a digital instrument panel. A range of new trim and upholstery options are likely to be offered with the revised model, along with an upgraded infotainment system inspired by the 308.

The saloon’s 10-inch touchscreen is likely to remain, but it’ll run Peugeot’s latest user interface and graphics. The brand could also install a lower digital touch panel to access media and navigation functions, as found in the 308.

The outgoing 508 is offered with a choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, and we expect the same of the new model - albeit potentially with minor efficiency and performance improvements. For reference, the current line-up consists of a 128bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel with 128bhp and a plug-in hybrid model, each equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The latter uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor to provide 222bhp. It’s a similar setup to that of the Citroen C5 X and C5 Aircross PHEVs, each of which have recently been updated with improved battery technology for extra pure electric range. The 508 can travel 34 miles from a full charge, and could receive a similar upgrade to push towards a 40-mile figure, dropping the PHEV into the 8 per cent BiK tax bracket.
