  • Maserati now says, "Forget the name Alfieri." Instead, it clarifies, its next and only grand touring coupe will again be named GranTurismo.
  • The voluptuous Alfieri concept car could still provide design direction for the revived GranTurismo.
  • An electrified powertrain is officially in the works, but it's unclear if the new car will be offered exclusively as an EV.
Maserati's stunning Alfieri concept car is no longer in the brand's product plan—at least, not with that name attached. But there's still good news: the Italian automaker says a new generation of the GranTurismo is coming soon to replace the current model, which was discontinued after the 2019 model year. What's more, a Maserati spokesperson confirmed to C/D that the GranCabrio name will also be revived for a convertible version of the new GranTurismo. The hardtop coupe model should begin production as soon as 2022, with the softtop following a year later. The GranTurismo will slot into the Maserati lineup alongside a new mid-engine supercar called MC20.

New 2022 Maserati GranTurismo: details and images of new GT car

Maserarti GranTurismo-5.jpg

Maserati’s long-awaited follow-up to the first-generation GranTurismo will finally be unveiled during 2022, featuring a classic two-door GT bodystyle and the option of both petrol and fully electric power.

Maserarti GranTurismo-2.jpg
Rivalling everything from M-powered versions of the BMW 8 Series to the Ferrari Roma in petrol form, and EVs such as the Porsche Taycan in electric form, the GranTurismo will also be joined by a drop-top GranCabrio, likely to arrive in 2023. Spyshots have already given us a glimpse at the new coupe’s look.

Maserarti GranTurismo.jpg

The images, released by the brand earlier this year, showed the new car in Maserati-branded camouflage wrapping. We can still see that the GranTurismo sticks to the classic two-door, four-seat proportions of the previous model, with a long bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and wide rear haunches.

Maserarti GranTurismo-3.jpg

The new model also appears to borrow inspiration from the MC20 supercar, particularly at the front-end, with a similar headlamp shape and heavily sculpted bonnet. The grille appears to be larger, however, and the overall profile of the rear-end is reminiscent of the old GranTurismo’s.

Exhaust tailpipes are just visible on the prototypes we’ve seen, and Auto Express understands that the car will launch first with combustion-engined power. Technical details are yet to be confirmed, but a likely engine candidate is Maserati’s new ‘Nettuno’ twin-turbo V6 found in the MC20. In that car it produces 621bhp and 730Nm of torque, although it remains to be seen if it’ll be detuned for the GranTurismo.

There’s also the possibility that Maserati will continue using its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, which has recently found homes in the company’s Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte Trofeo models. The unit itself is related to the engine found in Ferrari’s Portofino and Roma, but emissions regulations could make the V6 the favoured option for the GranTurismo.
More radically, and unlike all of the GranTurismo’s traditional rivals to date, it will also be offered with pure electric power. Set to be branded Folgore, the battery-powered coupe will make use of a three-motor powertrain, with one motor mounted on the front axle and two on the rear to make the car all-wheel drive.

That’ll likely also bring torque vectoring tech to the model, while Maserati also touted an 800v electrical architecture which would allow ultra-fast charging. It is also claimed that the electric GranTurismo will have “more than 50 per cent more power” than the previous V8-powered GranTurismo, meaning a power output of around 680bhp.

If that figure is correct, it would likely make the electric GranTurismo the fastest-accelerating version. Maserati has also said that the EV will be relatively lightweight, while the electric motors and battery pack will have a minimal impact on interior space and boot capacity.

A long driving range and quick charge times have also been promised, but we’re yet to see figures to back up those claims. To be considered a ‘GT’ it would need to be capable of around 300 miles on a charge.

The GranTurismo is part of the company’s product plan, announced in 2020, which will see multiple new models launched in the coming years, including the forthcoming Grecale small SUV, convertible and electric versions of the MC20, and a new Quattroporte and Levante. Electric versions of all new models are also planned.

New V6-powered Maserati GranTurismo revealed in official images

Maserati GranTurismo.jpg

The next Maserati GranTurismo has been in the making for some time and, as its 2023 launch draws closer, the firm has released a new set of images which showcase its exterior design in full.

Maserati GranTurismo-2.jpg
The GranTurismo will be powered by the Nettuno V6 engine that debuted in the MC20 supercar, although a tri-motor electric Folgore model will also be offered with around 1,200bhp. The firm details that, in V6 form, the GranTurismo will be available in either Modena or Trofeo specifications, the latter of which presumably designed for a more sporting character.

Maserati GranTurismo-4.jpg

The car in these pictures is a GranTurismo Modena, and exhibits similar styling traits to the previous Pininfarina-designed version from 2007 - albeit with shades of the MC20 flagship. Maserati’s trident logo stands front and centre in an oval shaped grille, sitting above deep vent openings in the lower bumper. These elements have been redesigned from the electric Folgore version to feed air to the twin-turbo V6 motor.

The vertical headlights evoke Maserati’s latest supercar, although the long bonnet proportions, glasshouse and triple front wing vents are similar to the previous model. There’s a set of trident-design diamond cut wheels too, with the combustion-engined GranTurismo receiving a new rear bumper to incorporate quad-exit exhaust pipes. The slender LED tail lights are similar to the MC20’s units, too.

Maserati has previously posted a video of the Folgore version online, showing an undisguised prototype taking to Californian roads. In the clip, the car is driven by head designer Klaus Busse with chief communications officer Maria Conti providing some technical details.

Given Maserati’s commitment to the Formula E race series, it also outlined that its future sporty models - including the GT - will feature technology transfer from race track to road. The GranTurismo Folgore will benefit from Formula E inverters, with a ‘bone’ battery for optimal weight distribution and to keep the car’s centre of gravity low.

Press Release:
One of the brand’s icons is back: Maserati presents the new GranTurismo, marking a new chapter in a story that began 75 years ago with the Maserati A6 1500.

The GranTurismo coupé combines the high performance typical of a sports car with comfort suitable for long distances, in both the version with a powerful internal combustion engine and with the most innovative 100% electric solutions. It represents a benchmark, embodying the concept of “The Others Just Travel”. This model is taking the House of the Trident forward into the future: it is the first car in the brand’s history to adopt a 100% electric powertrain.

From an aesthetic point of view, the GranTurismo design represents an ideal balance between beauty and functionality, without ostentation. With undeniably unique and immediately recognisable lines: a pure shape suitable to cover best-in-class mechanics, emphasising the purity of its forms and its refined design cues.

The classic proportions of the brand's cars have been maintained, with the long bonnet and the central body intersected by the four fenders. Conversely, the roof line drops dynamically to emphasise the curve of the pillar that features the iconic Trident logo.

Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the Mirafiori manufacturing hub in Turin, the GranTurismo is 100% made in Italy and epitomises “Italian luxury performance”, a concept typical of all Maserati models.

The new coupé is equipped with the revolutionary V6 Nettuno engine, available in two versions: the Modena, with the 490-hp 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno Twin Turbo; the high-performance Trofeo version is based on the same engine, upgraded to a maximum power of 550 hp.

Alternatively, the GranTurismo Folgore adopts a 100% electric battery-based powertrain. The Folgore system is based on 800-volt technology and has been developed with cutting-edge technical solutions derived from Formula E. It offers superb performance, made possible by the three powerful 300-kW permanent magnet motors.

The battery has a nominal capacity of 92.5 kWh and a discharge capacity of 560 kW, to continuously transmit around 760 hp to the wheels. The specific set-up and innovative layout of the battery result in the containment of vehicle height to 1353 mm, without compromising its sporty nature. The shape of the battery pack, known as ‘T-bone’, forms part of Maserati’s “zero compromise” approach and avoids placing the battery modules under the seats, mainly moving them around the central tunnel and therefore considerably lowering the car’s H-point.

In terms of technical architecture, the new model is the result of an innovative project that makes extensive use of lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium, together with high-performance steel. Such a multi-material approach required new manufacturing processes to be created, resulting in best-in-class weight levels.

This approach is paired with new Atlantis High electrical/electronic architecture, based on canFD messages sent at speeds of up to 2 ms. The system also comes with advanced level 5 cyber-security and flash-over-the-air features. The fulcrum is the Vehicle Domain Control Module (VDCM) master controller, a 100% Maserati project consisting of the software that provides 360° control of all the most important car systems, for the best driving experience in all conditions.

In the interior, the Maserati GranTurismo’s modern cabin is equipped with Innovative systems, including the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia system, the latest infotainment, a comfort display that brings together the main functions in an integrated touchscreen interface, a digital clock and the Heads-up Display (available as an option).

The GranTurismo also offers an “all-round sound experience”, guaranteed by the iconic signature sound of the Maserati engine, even in the electric version thanks to innovative work by engineers at the Maserati Innovation Lab. The sound experience is completed by the immersive Sonus faber 3D sound system. Designed and made by Italian craftsmen in sound, the audio system offers two levels of customisation, giving it up to 19 speakers and 3D sound with an output of up to 1,195 W, for depth of field and truly unique roundness of sound.*

At launch, the GranTurismo is also available in the PrimaSerie 75th Anniversary Launch Edition, a limited series featuring exclusive content and dedicated to its recent 75th anniversary.

Sportiness, luxury and comfort: by focusing on customer requests from the earliest stages of development onwards, the new GranTurismo is enabling Maserati to solve the impossible equation of combining sports performance with comfort suitable for long distances, both with powerful internal combustion engines and with the most innovative 100% electric solutions. It represents a benchmark in the segment.
