Laptop ?! Its depends up on your usage.

Select the OS first:

  1. If you are going to use this for any windows based programing activities and related experiments: Go for the Windows based one.
  2. If you are not going to do any windows based programming, then go for a Linux based one. In that case, I would strongly suggest an Apple Mac Book (Leopard).
in windows based system, make sure that you are going for Windows 7. Don't take Vista. I my self have a Vista based one. But after installing some recent high priority updates, the hell it is showing troubles [confused]

I prefer HP dv series as HP's ASS is excellent. DELL, as far as I've seen will start giving trouble after 2 years (no arguments please, may be its just that it happened to all of my friends who had one [:)])

SONY and IBM are good choice too. As of now I will give the rating as below:

  1. HP / Compaq
  2. IBM
  3. SONY
  4. DELL
  5. ACER

If you are focusing on portability, go for the 12" one. It is very handy. Regarding the DVD drive, I would suggest you to go for one with LightScribe technology. I am not sure whether you will get BlueRay in this price range. Always go for higher RAM.

Thanks for the feedback
HP and Sony is out of my budget
My cousin has a HP,its touch pad got screwed and HP were not able to do anything.he now uses an external mouse.
I have Windows 7 so OS is not an issue.
I'm looking for something that is VFM
Aunt has a Dell and its too good though the touch pad is a bit moody but definately more grunt for the buck :D
I'll have a look at acer and compaq
but what about dell nothing about it?

Regarding DELL, don't buy any model which comes with NVidia G84- and G86-GPU's. DELL claims that for the machines with these chips, they are using A12 BIOS. However, I am not sure about how the user experience is. Please do study on that. The problem with the Nvidia mentioned GPU's was that Nvidia used a chip material that couldn't stand high temperatures. Hence, all those DELL machines with these series of chips had serious issues. DELL claims that the new A12 BIOS improves thermal control, nullifying the issues!

I will talk to my friends with DELL laps, and will keep you informed.

If you already have Windows 7 , then check this http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/sm/WF05a/321957-321957-64295-3955548-3955548-3764997.html

Checked the HP it costs 36000 for a Core 2 duo T5670 processor with 1.8 ghz processor with 1 gb ram whereas a Dell 15 has core 2 duo T6500 processor with 2 GB ram for 33800 bucks.
Anything that i am missing??

I checked DELL 15 series. Its look attractive and I think its value for money [thumbswink]

But couple of things, always check the L2 cache. Go for a DVD drive with LightScribe.

He is right, TOSHIBA is a good brand too. Another nice stuff is FUJITSU-SIEMENS. My official laptop is FUJITSU-SIEMENS and it has a nice performance.

What is lightscribe??

I checked the Dell Inspiron at Dell factory outlet today,
The video playback is awesome and so is the sound.
But it will take about 7-10 day to Reach me (they say it'll reach by 2-3 days )
I have no clue about Dell's service centers, but my aunt has no problems with her Dell so far.
Also checked the Acer Aspire 5738G and was pretty impressed, but no reviews of the product.
HP is way out of my budget and is not VFM.

I've not come across Toshiba till now(its not that famous).
Nor i've come across Fujitsu-Siemens.
Will check out Chroma tommorow.
Please keep updating guys.[thumbswink]

Light Scribe is a new Technology!

It is just used for labeling the CDs & DVDs.

In India most people go with the following order

HP Pavillion - This is really worth the buy, even if it is costly

Compaq - This is the low cost Laptops from HP

Dell - This mostly used by Corporates & Support is good only in B'lore

Lenevo - A new Brand in India. More to explore. Better avoid!

Acer - Decent Brand, but low cost products & not too High Fi

Try to strech your budget for HP or stick with Compaq!

Renegrade - Do check the Lenovo range too. I have been using Lenovo Y410 for almost 3 years and touch wood it has never seen a service center!

Check the Y450 here.

A bit outside your budget but has loads of features.

- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T6600 ( 2.20GHz 800MHz 2MB )
- 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
- 14.0 " HD Wide LED 1366x768
- 320GB 5400 HDD
- DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)
- One year parts and labour (system battery: one year)

Finally, whatever laptop you get don't forget to bargain/buy extra warranty

@Arun - Fingerprint verifications are history! Its the face recognition now. Mine works perfectly fine!
