Man is a tool using animal.Without tools he is nothing, with tools he is all..
Thomas Carlyle
Since childhood I had a fascination for tools esp.the ones used on scooters. One of the very first memory of a tool was of the spark plug opener wrench with a tommy, which was used in front of my eyes often,by my grandfather on his lambretta. When I grew up,I had a L.M.L scooter, with a tool set provided with it.That was my first personal tool set.I preserved it for 16 years, till I sold off the scooter. The problem with spark plug wrench was that it was made of inferior quality metal(most of them are).It got warped on applying extra torque. At that time I was sad, blamed myself for making it useless.
When I got married I had a maruti 800 deluxe (emerald green). It had it own tool set.And I was more than happy,to have 2 tool sets together.I loved it.I took care of it and washed it regularly. One day the grey coloured front grill came off and started rattling.I opened the bonnet and inspected closely. There were screws needing tightening. Also there were 10 no. bolts loose on the front trim above the grill.I was determined to do it myself without any ASS help.I searched the local small shops around my home. There were many mechanics and all ,but nobody had any clue where to buy the specific tool for it.That day after little bit of asking around I actually bought my 1st tool, and used it too.It was a small thing for others but a big feat for me then.
Later on when I started earning money was really scarce. No One will believe it ,but I had to save for quite some time to spend on tools and other DIY stuff.

I mean I had money to eat and live and take care of rent and petrol, but that was all. There were no savings and certainly no money for this tool-busines.Whenever I used to go to different service centres,I used to marvel at the good hand tools these mechanics used, and how easy these tools make their work look(which actually is not easy).I wished someday I could lay my hands on one of those torque wrenches, used by them.
Collecting and using the tools is not my hobby but my passion. Its the extension of me. Just like I love my cars,so do I love my tools.and I enjoy using them. The good thing is,unlike my cars, I am sure my son and his son too has a good chance of inheriting and using them.

this is the first tool I bought for 10 sized bolts of maruti 800

5 ton bottle jack.Very smooth in action
IMG-20180202-WA0014.jpg

along with the helper rods
IMG-20180202-WA0015.jpg

this is a 12 ton bottle hydraulic jack!!I have used both on my XUV.
IMG-20180202-WA0016.jpg

this thing is heavy duty
IMG-20180202-WA0011.jpg

both the jacks together.
IMG-20180202-WA0010.jpg

This is a trolley jack, and its very handy.this is automotive grade paint, which I have used on the jack bought for the purpose of touchups of ritz and swift. This jack has 3 ton capacity.I have used this extensively while changing and mending puncture tyres,as well as changing shockers of swift as well as ritz.
I have a unique habit of painting each and everything (esp. cars and tools and bike and activa!!)around me.Its hand painted by me.OEM Paint was green.
IMG-20180202-WA0009.jpg

this thing weighs 32kgs!!
IMG-20180202-WA0007.jpg

this is the most used jack in the house.I have installed rubber on the front (to protect the contact points of car )leftover from the old shocker of rits
IMG-20180202-WA0008.jpg

I even painted the iron tyres and make it look like a toy car.

Re: My Tool Collection and DIY adventures with them

This is simple scissor car jack supplied with maruti cars.It has very less capacity, max 1ton.No sweat because their cars anyway are mostly less than that figure.
2 years back I had an accident when the jack of the ritz gave way and it came down.I was simply startled. This should never have happened.Luckily I had not removed the wheels yet, otherwise rotors would have been damaged.I bought this same spec jack from dealer then.
IMG-20180202-WA0000.jpg

OEM jack that came with my XUV.That is sturdy.
IMG-20180202-WA0002.jpg

IMG-20180202-WA0001.jpg

3rd jack in the pic is the NEXON jack. Its sturdy too, with added advantage of a very broad base welded to the jack from the factory itself,so more safety.

my mini JCB,my favourite. This one is the easiest to maneuver below a car into a deep recess, under a proper jacking point.

Re: My Tool Collection and DIY adventures with them

This is my puncture repair kit along with COIDO brand tyre inflator, and tyre pressure gauge.I have 3 types of pressure monitoring gauges including the one inbuilt in the inflator itself. All my puncture repairs are done at home by me only. All the tyre pressure monitoring as well as increasing/ decreasing pressure according to the cold hot weather etc are done at home only.I have not been to any puncture repair crooks since 2008,when my swift had the 1st puncture. So far I have repaired mutiple pictures on swift, ritz ,xuv and last was of nexon too.So you can say I have the black belt in puncture repair.ha ha ha [:D]

These are the BIG BULL jack-stands I got online. Each of them weighs about 2 kgs. They are sturdy. In all my DIYs they support my car, after I raise them.Sometime its time consuming, and the max they have supported the whole car like swift is for upto 36 hrs!!
The white paint is again done by me,on the slightly rusted parts.I hate(and evert car loving guy should) rust. This is automotive grade paint,so it will last long.

each has a 3 TON capacity

IMG-20180203-WA0018.jpg

This jack stand is even more sturdy. It weighs 3 kgs. This one has 5 ton capacity.Take it for granted that all the white colour is done by me.Originally it was orange.
IMG-20180203-WA0017.jpg

this rubber bush I have installed to protect car underbody in case of use. This was leftover from the shock absorber of swift which was changed last year,in the home itself.
IMG-20180203-WA0015.jpg

size comparison of the three stands. As can be seen white one has 2 iron beams criss crossing at the base. That makes it capable of bearing 5 tonnes.

IMG-20180203-WA0012.jpg

oil can 250ml capacity
IMG-20180203-WA0022.jpg

this one has 500ml capacity. It has better quality too.

One of the very useful tool I have is the impact driver. It is very useful for those screws which are rusted, fixed ,stubborn or very hard to loosen up.It works both right and left,on setting.I have collected 8 bits instead of normal 4 supplied by the manufacturer.Additionally it has detachable upper cover to be used as normal wrench/driver.

Allen Keys set
IMG-20180204-WA0003.jpg

Taparia, Multitek as well as Force motors are the brands.

The hex allen key set is very useful to remove the car seats for raising seat height or for installing accessories etc.

DIY RITZ PETROL:CHANGING THE FAULTY DOOR LATCH ASSEMBLY AT HOME
My Ritz from the 2nd year of ownership, started giving problems with door locks. Sometimes the door would open automatically. Other Times it would refuse to close at all.Once the door was locking but not opening automatically from key fob button.Everytime the culprit was not the autocop,as was suspected initially, but the poor quality door latch assembly of Ritz. Over the course of ownership, gradually all the door locks malfunctioned and had to be changed one by one with a gap of 1 to 2 years in between.Ist latch was changed by ASS under warranty where I learned how to DIY,and last 3 were done by me only at my home using the tools I have. Here are the pics of the front left door of the ritz which refused to open from inside. It was opening from outside and everytime I had to lower the glass to open from outer handle .It was kind of embarrassing.I procured the door latch by ordering from the Genuine parts stockist. It cost me 1400 rs,and labour was free!!

All doors have this sticky black gum thing which is there to stick this plastic sheet to keep moisture out.It also makes all the DIY on the doors messy.

after the latch changing was done successfully the sound of the door changed completely. It was rattly before, but afterward it became khachh, just like new.

Thanks for the motivation. For once I thought nobody is interested in tools and stuff!!

Today I will share with you pics of my vise grip. Its a very effective tool, when there is need to lock the affected part, and keep it in the same position. They are also known by the name of Locking pliers,or mole grips or vise-grips .Actually they are pliers. They can be locked into position, using an over-center action. One side of the handle includes a bolt that is used to adjust the spacing of the jaws, the other side of the handle (especially in larger models) often includes a lever to push the two sides of the handles apart to unlock the pliers.
My vise grip is 8 inches long, and its of mediocre size,I must say.

Its very helpful when the rotating nut or bolt is already locked into place by this vise grip. Then you can work easily on the parts around it,without the fear of loosening of the original nut.

CHANGING THE DEAR OIL ON MY SWIFT VXI
Even after many services done on the swift no one wanted to do gear oil change, even when it was specified at 40,000 kms. They just checked with finger that the oil level is touching the fingertips so its enough!!.Now I know why. It was time consuming and messy .I did it all ,in my home only, with the tools available to me.
As can be seen in the pictures, there are 2 separate points on the gearbox itself. The upper point is for filling and the lower is for draining. The drain plug require special allen key or a square bit for opening, otherwise it will be ruined if normal wrench is used.I had purchased this bit from the market specifically for this purpose.

Okay ,so last sunday Me and my nexon met with an accident.Nothing serious, except right fender lining got shattered from the bottom.I was upset for 2 days. Well I could not see a manhole cover( while doing a U-Turn )which was already upturned on the road.I banged head on with it. Well S**t happens. It was my fault, should have been more careful. Finally today bought new fender lining from the dealer in my city, and went about replacing it in my home only.

I have worked similarly quite a lot on ritz ,swift, maruti 8oo, and xuv500.In comparison I have reached this conclusion that Nexon is very well built and is quite strong. Despite of this loud bang there was minimal damage limited only to few trims. Any maruti would have ended up badly because of poor quality parts.Nexon is really strong.
