I'm pretty sure the Mini Cooper will sell with some rich enthusiasts. Especially with the power it holds under the hood and the opportunity to modify it to a great extent.

Mini is launched in India

German luxury car maker BMW has launched its iconic Mini in India, which also happens to be the 100th market for the car. The Mini will come in five variants—Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Convertible, Cooper S Countryman and Cooper S Countryman High—and will be priced upwards of Rs 25 lakh, pitting it against the Volkswagen Beetle. The car, which was unveiled at the auto expo in January, will roll out from its showroom in Mumbai next month. Unlike the XI, X3 and 3 and 5 Series, which are assembled in India, the Mini will be imported as a completely built-up unit. The company has received bookings for around 100 units and plans to focus on establishing the Mini brand in India this year. The company plans to open showrooms in Delhi, Pune, Bangalore in coming months.

Interview with Pooja Choudhary - CEO, Infinity Cars on bringing MINI to India.

As the first ever woman entrepreneur to successfully deploy a high-end automobile brand franchise on Indian soil, Infinity Cars, CEO, Pooja Choudhary gets candid with ZigWheels on her personal affiliation with British marquee and its potential to penetrate the country's premium auto space in the years to come.

Q1. What personally drew you towards brand MINI and valiantly taking custody of the country’s first MINI dealership in Mumbai?

The MINI brand is extremely iconic and it has a huge history behind it. It is a beautiful car; small and practical, and has been a very successful brand globally. So with being in the premium automobile space, it was an obvious choice to run after a brand, the likes of MINI.

Q2. How has the response been so far at the Mumbai showroom? What has the general feedback been with regards to the cars on display and the brand as a whole?

Driving a MINI is all said and done an exhilarating experience and it’s easy for anyone who gets behind the wheel of any one of these cars, it is the vehicle’s fabulous power delivery that excites them the most. So apart from the fact, that these cars are good looking stylish, the fact that you can individualize them as per your tastes gives helps give them a very unique identity on the road.

Q3. Which MINI model would you pick personally from the current line-up on sale in India?

See the Countryman, is a very interesting car. Although it has not been designed to look like a conventional MINI Cooper, its larger proportions, spacious interiors and delightful drive experience makes for a very practical all-round vehicle with tremendous potential here on Indian roads.

Q4. What according to you distinguishes a MINI from similarly placed high-end small cars like the Volkswagen Beetle and the Fiat 500?

Frankly, I don’t think the two can even be compared to the MINI Cooper. This is a car that comes from a brand that carried its very own heritage, corporate identity and an exciting assortment of models that have been well received across continents. The drive quality, customization options and ownership experience of a MINI are unparalleled and this is what sets them apart from their competitors.

Q5. Can enthusiasts look forward to any customer driven initiatives that would bring them closer to the brand?

We are planning quite a few exciting events for the near future around the MINI brand, and while details cannot be shared of any particular event at this point, what I can say from my experience of being associated with the brand is that MINI is always unconventional and full of surprise and this will reflect in an assortment of nationwide events planned for the months ahead.

MINI the retro styled cars could soon be manufactured in the Indian market. BMW launched the MINI cars in India at the 2012 Auto Expo. The company sold first 100 cars in less than two months. After the initial hype sales are luke warm which is mainly due to the high price tag.

MINI cars are sold as CBUs in India and attract more than 120% import duties. The MINI range starts at Rs. 24.9 lakhs for the Cooper while the top end model Cooper S Countryman costs Rs. 31.99 lakhs

BMW now plans to locally assemble the Mini range in India, to reduce prices substantially. The CKD operations (local assembly) attract about 30 per cent duty, far lower than CBU imports; and this will help BMW to cut prices and make the cars more affordable (we are talking about the rich class only).

Rumours suggest that BMW plans to assemble all four models – Mini Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper convertible and the Mini Countryman, in India. For these operations BMW may setup an assembly line at the Chennai facility soon, to build Minis alongside the X1, X3, 3-Series and the 5-Series.

BMW will have to start work at a faster pace as the competition has started to heat up especially after the launch of the Audi Q3 and soon to be launched Mercedes-Benz B-Class.

The MINI range is sold through three exclusive dealerships – Deutsche Motoren and Bird Automotive in New Delhi and Infinity Cars in Mumbai.

BMW Group India President Philipp von Sahr said that they expected the dealership network to increase in near future and the country to recover from a short economic slump which has been hampering the sales. “This year (2012) we make the brand known.
