Mercedes-Benz is soon to launch its GL-class to take the fight against the Audi Q7. Looking at the declining sales of the M-class, thanks to the strong appeal of the Q7, Mercedes will officially launch its gigantic SUV, the GL-class at the Auto Expo in January 2010.
The GL will be five meters long weighing two-and-a-half tones with seating option for seven. Mercedes is slating the GL against the Audi Q7 in the SUV luxury battle, where the latter is perceived as the luxury SUV standards by Indians.

With GL’s imposing size and presence, the M-class looks punny in comparison and the company is betting big on it. The price will be announced at the Expo but expect it to be in the Q7 territory. Could this be the new king of luxury SUV segment? Only time will tell.

Yup.
You see a Q7 on the Mumbai Pune E-Way quite often.
Land in Pune, and this big hoarding announces that a particular hotel will pick you up from the airport in a Q7.
The contest, though in a stratospheric atmo, should be fun!!

Good to see action in the premium SUV segment. But Audi already has its Q7 and Q5 captured the segment. Hope this new merc does well too.

Hey GL class is a great SUV from Mercedes, looks even better than M-Class to me.
Q7 is sold in very good number in india so this will be the option for those who are bored from it!

i Agree with you on this. The M class looks like a regular old merc to me. This one looks a lot muscular and comparable to the looks of Q7.

The Merc is Monstrous and well comparable to Q7.

Some stand-aside features I noticed are:-
1. Roof contains front moonroof and rear minimised sunroof seperated by a small roof.Good, the comfort of rear and middle row passengers are kept in mind.

2. The Cabin have excessive touch of wooden finish,we can see it on doors, while dash and also on steering wheel.

3. The Gearlever is shifted to the steering column on the right-hand side.Dont have any idea that it will be comfortable or not even being an automatic.

4. The side windows view is almost like a Mitsubishi Montero style.

Overally the vehicle looks very muscular and appealing SUV, hope it works better than M-Class and compete well with Q7.

Merc GL is a looker from front but rear gradually turns to be boxy, unlike M-Class. The car is launching today in Delhi, I think.

And it is here!
This week is going to be interesting with so many launches!

Mercedes Benz India has kickstarted their Auto Expo 2010 campaign with a bang by launching the S500 saloon and the GL350 CDi SUV. The S500 is the most expensive car produced in India and the GL350 is probably the biggest SUV on the market.

The S500 is equipped with a new SPLITVIEW technology for the COMAND control and display system, centrally positioned in the console. Other new features are the SD memory card slot and the Bluetooth interface.

The new leviathan GL350CDI on the other hand reaches a top speed of 210kph and races to 0-100 in 9.5sec. The unique 4MATIC permanent four-wheel drive system provides the GL with greater handling irrespective of the conditions. The two individual third-row seats can be folded at the press of a button to create a flat loading surface.
“Our cars reflect excitement and excellence, and it will be evident through the products that we will unveil in 2010”, said Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, MD and CEO, Mercedes Benz India.
The S500L is priced at Rs 95lakh and the GL350CDI will set you back by Rs. 64.9 lakhs (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi)

Command Control Screen is located on Center console as stated in article (Like BMW's i-Drive) and by split view technology, It means that screen can display multiple picture/info at once by dividing the screen. Check the image below ;

Mercedes-Benz have done the right thing by introducing the GL-Class in India. The ML-Class always looked timid in comparison to an Audi Q7, or worse, even a BMW X5 (which itself isn't a looker). I spotted a GL today, and oh my, it looks brawny and dominating! Just the way an SUV should look IMO.

In an S-Class of its own!

Here is the TD report of this car i came across! Thought will share it here!

Any takers here??[:D]

Priced at Rs 1.1 crore, the S500 L is the most expensive car to be assembled in India. It's been on sale as an expensive import for about two years, but now since it's being assembled here, the flagship ‘S' is now Rs. 15 lakh less!

It is still not inexpensive, but step into the business-class seats at the rear and you'll understand why it costs so much. There is more space per seat than the Airbus A320, the seat reclines, the thigh support extendable and it's got double-glazed glass and air-suspension too. Keeping the rest of the world at arm's length from here is really easy. But this you expect from any S-class. So what's different with the S500 L?

The answer lies in the two additional cylinders, two extra litres of swept volume and a 97bhp, 16kgm up in power and torque from the S350. Slipping this 369bhp V8 into the S-class has added an entirely new dimension to the big Merc's abilities. The S350 may have been smooth and effortless, but this one is fantastically so. With a torque curve that's flatter than an airplane at cruising altitude (51.5kgm from 2800-4400rpm), this is an engine that shrugs away the 2.1-tonne kerb weight of this long-wheelbase version like a hare runs away from a tortoise. Full-throttle starts feel a lot like an aircraft taking off (the Merc is much quicker to 100kph obviously). First there's that push into the seats by the sheer force of velocity and then there's a steady and strong build-up of speed as the engine works its way through all seven gears. It takes a mere 6.7 seconds to shoot past 100kph and you do a fly-past of 160kph in 15.7sec. The 7G-Tronic auto-box is fantastic and, thanks to the broad spread of torque, you won't feel the need to use the paddleshifts. The only fly in this ointment was the occasional reluctance to shift down for a quick overtake. The software thinks there's no need for a downshift given the torque, but you can see that bus looming. It takes a quick tug on the left paddleshift sorts this out. It geared well too —100kph in seventh gear equates to a mere 1500rpm on the rev counter, giving the car a tremendous long-legged gait.

Ride quality is exemplary and is still a class benchmark. Even the most severely broken road surface is smoothed into submission by the Airmatic air suspension but we have to admit, there is a slight hint of lumpiness at lower speeds — due to the lower profile tyres we say.

Of course, the S-class is no sportscar, but its new torque-vectoring brake system (that brakes an inside wheel if understeer is detected) helps you go harder around corners. The variable ratio steering is direct and you're always aware of the weight and size of this 5.2-metre-long uber saloon. Things improve when you push one small button marked ‘sport' on the centre console and shift the transmission into manual mode. You can feel the difference in the way the S feels less wafty and body movements are more tightly controlled but this being a Mercedes-Benz, even the sport mode won't make compromises on comfort. For sure, this ‘S' comes with some new features for the interiors, such as the three colour options for the interior ambient lighting and the Split Screen display. This allows the driver and front passenger to view different content simultaneously on one and the same screen. So the driver could be listening to traffic reports on the radio while the passenger watches a DVD.

The S500 L's brilliant blend of comfort, space, new-found pace and grace, available at Rs 1.1 crore, is the reason you should go for one. Trust us, the next step is a private jet.
