Mercedes-Benz R&D India’s new Bangalore unit is Daimler’s single-largest R&D facility outside of Germany

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has inaugurated its new facility at Whitefield, Bangalore. Spread over 20,000 square metres with capacity to house 1,800 people, this is the single largest R&D facility of Daimler outside of Germany.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management, Daimler AG and Head of Group Research, Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, commented: "MBRDI is one of our most important hubs within the global research and development organisation and the new facility will be a cornerstone for leveraging the Indian talent pool for Daimler. As a global development centre, the contribution of MBRDI can be envisaged from the fact that in 2012 alone, the organisation filed over 50 patents for innovations in automotive development- a powerful testimony to MBRDI’s success". He also stated that “India is a high potential market for Mercedes-Benz and MBRDI will continue to ensure that development initiatives are in cognizance with the needs of upcoming markets.” MBRDI has been involved with some of Daimler’s cutting-edge projects. A case in point is the company’s leadership towards ‘Human Body Modeling (HBM) System’. The HBM simulation under development and testing at MBRDI, considers “almost” every possible combination of accident variables from biomechanics and the physical properties of human tissues to accident statistics and the physics of crash situations. HBM is a key pillar supporting Daimler’s vision of accident-free driving.

MBRDI has been involved in many areas of Daimler’s R&D engagements including component development of parts and modules for the new-generation cars from Mercedes-Benz. The integral seats of the newly launched A-class and the seats of the new CLA are a few examples of end-to-end projects lead by the MBRDI team.

Dr. Jens Cattarius, managing director and CEO of MBRDI, stated: "Indian talent needs no introduction- and the success story of MBRDI proves this point. Will use more local parts

German automobile company Daimler, the maker of the Mercedez-Benz luxury cars, is working towards using more components that are made in India in its cars, so as to reduce costs and drive up volumes here. The company, which competes with BMW and Audi in the premium segment, currently imports cars in the form of completely knocked-down kits and assembles them in India.

Local production of parts will enable the German automaker to avoid having to pay high import duty, up to 30% or more for importing components. "If there is local sales of at least 50,000 for a particular model, then it is viable for us to do complete local production," said Thomas Weber, member of Daimler's board of management and global head of research for the group that also makes trucks and buses.

Weber added that India will be a critical market for Daimler soon with the country representing a luxury car market of about seven million units or about 4% of the overall car market. In 2012, the company sold a little over 7,000 cars in India. In comparison, Daimler sold around 2 lakh cars in China, where it does a greater degree of local production.

Compared with other German automakers, Daimler has been more aggressive in tapping India's engineering and technical talent pool. India houses the largest research and development facility of the company outside its headquarters in Germany. The research centre in Bangalore and engineering facility in Pune together employ some 1,200 professionals, but that number is expected touch 2,000 by 2015, according to Jens Cattarius, managing director and chief executive of Mercedez Benz Research and Development India.

The India centre helps with design and development of various interior components such as seats, dashboards and front panel, some of which are supplied globally by the company's partners in Pune. Increasingly, a lot of digital prototyping and simulations to test parts and sometimes virtual crash-testing cars to design safety features for Daimler is being done out of India. This helps the German company, which plans to spend about Rs 77,400 crore over this year and next, to reduce wastage and expenses.

Mercedes Benz to launch four models; reach out to more tier 2, tier 3 cities

German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz India is banking on new models across categories and strengthening of sales network to fuel growth, said a top company official. It hopes to accelerate the sales in current year after a near stagnant sales in 2012.

"We expect to grow in double digits in 2013," Mercedes Benz India MD and CEO Eberhard Kern told media persons in Ahmedabad after inaugurating a new sales, service and spares showroom at Vadodara in Gujarat. Benchmark Group, with showrooms in Ahmedabad and Surat has opened its third sales point in the state. It is also planning expand to Rajkot in mid 2013.

Mercedes Benz India has 59 outlets in 33 cities across Gujarat, with a sales of close to 7,100 in 2012, almost same as in 2011. It plans to upgrade the outlets of its dealers and open at least six new outlets in 2013 to boost sales and to reach out the customers. "At present big cities like Mumbai and Delhi contribute 45% of our sales in India. The demand is also coming from smaller cities. So we want be close to our customers," said Kern.

At present, the company sells vehicles across categories like like B class (petrol), C, E, M, GL, R and S, ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1.1 crore. It has plans to launch a luxury hatchback the A-Class, the B-Class (Diesel) luxury sports tourer , a top luxury SUV - new model in GL-class within four months. The price of luxury hatchback would be lower than the current models and the company expects widen its appeal to the customers.

Sanjay Thakkar, chairman of Benchmark Cars, said that of late senior executives of corporates are also looking at owning a Mercedes car. "Even now Mercedes buyers are predominantly from real estate or indirectly connected to real estate. But now senior employees and owners of smaller firms are also buying our cars," he said. Benchmark has outlets in Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Kolkata and Vadodara.

The recent hike in taxation on SUV and Completely Build Units (CBU), announced in the budget for the fiscal 2013-14, will affect the sales of luxury cars in a scenario, when car sales have declined in the country, feels Kern. "We have partly absorbed the hike, but we have to pass on a part on the consumers. It can affect the sales," he said.

Mercedes to invest Rs 250 cr to double India capacity

German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz plans to infuse a fresh investment of Rs 250 crore into its Indian arm to double its production capacity to 20,000 vehicles by the end of this calendar.


"We are enhancing our production to cater to the increasing demand for luxury sedans and SUV in the domestic market," Mercedes Benz India MD & CEO Eberhard Kern said. The cumulative investment for the Indian market would be raised to Rs 850 crore, he said.

"If needed and depending on the market expansion we would add more capacity to the Pune plant to meet our future sales projections," Kern said at the launch of GL Class sports utility vehicle in New Delhi on Thursday.

Mercedes Benz plans to assemble the GL Class at its Pune plant September onwards to take the tally of locally made cars to five. Sedans like C-Class, E-Class, S-Class and the ML Class are already made at the plant.

The firm plans to add few more models later this year including the A Class hatchback, which would debut in the country later this month. Local assembling helps increase price competitiveness as such vehicles invite lower taxation than those imported.

Mercedes Benz, which once ruled the Indian luxury car market, has been struggling to keep pace with German rivals Audi and BMW in recent years. It sold 7,015 vehicles in India last fiscal year ended March while Audi sold 9,350 vehicles. BMW's Indian subsidiary has not released any sales figures for the same period.

Kern said 2013 is the 'Year of Offensive' for Mercedes Benz India. "We plan to launch more hatchbacks and SUVs to suit the taste of the growing number of offroading aficionados in India," he said.

Its latest launch — the GL Class — comes with an aggressive price of Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is powered by a 2,987 cc, V6 diesel engine and would be pitted against BMW's X6 and Audi's Q7 in the Indian market.

The company said that it has already sold out on the initial quota of 100 units of the launch edition of the GL Class.When the Pune plant starts rolling out the new SUV from September, India would be only the second international market after the the US to locally roll out the GL Class vehicle.

Luxury Car brand Mercedes Benz has reportedly(I.A.B) created a historic milestone of crossing a benchmark sales record by selling more than 10K units. This is suppose to be the second time that Mercedes Benz has done double-digit sales. With the superlative sales record in 2014, Mercedes Benz has also surpassed AUDI INDIA which was at one point the only luxury brand to do more than 10K unit sales annually.

Hyderabad: Reiterating the strategic focus on the AMG performance brand in India, Mercedes-Benz India inaugurated India’s fourth and Hyderabad’s first AMG Performance Centre at Mahavir Motors, today. With the expansion of the AMG Performance Centre (APC), Mercedes-AMG will now be offering exclusive and personalized service to the AMG customers. Mercedes-AMG is inaugurating two new Performance Centres in Hyderabad and Pune in two consecutive days, taking the total number of the high-end AMG Performance Centres to five outlets in India. AMG is synonymous with race track owing to its superlative performance and next generation research and development.
